The value of the victim's statement in the investigation of rape

Van der Merwe, Elmarie 02 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to evaluate the existing procedures that investigators in South Africa follow in utilising the information contained in the victim statement in the investigation of rape, with the intention of determining the strengths and weaknesses of the procedures and of considering how these procedures can be improved. The researcher explored how investigators internationally use information contained in the victim statement in the successful investigation of rape and read extensively on the topic in international literature sources. The researcher also evaluated the current methods that investigators within the South African Police Service (SAPS) use. The researcher made use of an empirical research design because of the limited information available on the topic of the research, and a qualitative research approach, which enabled real-life observations. Simple random sampling was used to select 20 uniform members as well as 20 investigators of rape incidents for interviewing. Purposive sampling was used to select two public prosecutors attached to the Sexual Offences Court. Data were obtained from their real-life experiences through interviewing them and data were further collected through case studies of case dockets. / Police Practice / M. Tech. Codex Zouche-Nuttall pages 1-41 : narrative structure, contents, and chronologies

Williams, Robert Lloyd 23 October 2009 (has links)
This dissertation is a concise examination of the complete obverse manuscript (document 1) of the pre-Hispanic pictogram screen-fold painted by the Mixtec Indians of Oaxaca. The study begins with the historiography of Native American Mexican screen-fold books as related by the first historian of the New World, Peter Martyr d’Anghera, in his De orbe novo and proceeds through major authors from the early twentieth century to present day. The nature of “native” history is explored as is the nature of pictogram narrative history. The superficial narrative structure of Codex Zouche-Nuttall, document 1 is then defined and interpretative reading techniques employed in this dissertation are applied to it. The codex document 1 contents (pages 1-41) are then listed in detail by section, structure, personnel, events, and native dates corresponded with the European calendar, this latter in so far as is possible. This definition explicates each of three bifurcated sections of the document, each section consisting of a story plus genealogy or genealogies. Additionally, essays on codex contents are provided to further elaborate these divisions of study within Codex Zouche-Nuttall document 1. These essays explore certain mysterious parts of the stories, as in the case of the Ladies Three Flint and the Four Lords from Apoala. Inferences are made from codex text regarding Postclassic Period Mixtec social organization via both political structure and religion. The end result is a concise elaboration and explanation of the entire document. / text

Etude cinétique et optimisation multicritères du couplage déshydratation imprégnation par immersion : séchage convectif de la poire, la pomme et l'abricot / Kinetic investigation and multicriteria optimization of dehydration impregnation : by soaking combined to convective drying of pear, apple and apricot

Djendoubi Mrad, Nadia 20 December 2012 (has links)
The aim of this work was the study of the impact of both drying processes: dehydration-impregnation by soaking (DIS) and convective drying performed separately or in combination on mass transfers of water and sucrose and on the main quality characteristics of the fruit (total difference of colour, total phenols (TP) and ascorbic acid (AA) contents, shrinking, water activity) by taking the pear Conference as a model. The processes effect on the pieces of pear was apprehended according two approaches: (i) a global study of the impact of the variables of commands on the quality of finished product and (ii) a kinetic study of nutritional compounds and the quality (colour, shrinkage, and water activity). Central Composite Design with four factors (sucrose concentration: 25-65 %, temperature: 20-60 °C, immersion time: 0.5-6.5 hr and drying temperature: 30-70 °C) at five levels each was used for pears processing. During DIS, the variables: immersion time, temperature and concentration of sucrose solution had a significant effect (p<0.01) in the loss of water, the solid gain and the quality attributes of pears. The losses in AA are higher than those in TP and are essentially due to the oxidation and the leaching with water. During the convective drying, the losses in TP and in AA depend more on the time of the process rather than the temperature of exposition. They reach respectively 80% and 34% after 10 h of drying at 30 °C. The color change of pear depends on the time and temperature of treatment and is more pronounced at the end of drying. Predictive and quadratic models were suggested to link the responses variables (aw, total colour difference, TP loss and total time treatment) to operational parameters of both studied processes. The losses in AA decrease linearly with the duration of DIS. A multicriteria optimization using response surface methodology (RSM) was proposed (minimal losses in TP and in AA, reduced total processing time and total difference in colour and an aw inferior to 0.6) for the combination DIS/convective drying. The optimal conditions are: osmotic solution at 28°C and 25°Brix, a DIS lasting 30 min and a convective drying at 60 °C. Otherwise, the temperature effects (30, 45 and 60 °C) and the sucrose impregnation by DIS (10 and 65 min, 70°Brix, 30 °C) upon the desorption isotherms and the transition temperature (Tg) of pears, apples and apricots were determined. The sucrose impregnation diminishes the influence of temperature on its sorption ability. It generates a depressing effect on water activity and a rise of pear hygroscopicity, apple and apricot at a high temperature. The desorption isotherms of fresh and sucrose impregnated apricot present a crossing of curves which mark the inverse of the effect of temperature on isotherms. The Tg depends on the temperature, the sucrose content and the fruit water content (X). For constant water content, the rise of temperature and of the duration de DIS result in the increase of Tg. The phase diagrams (Tg=f(X) et Tg=f(aw)) of fruits were established at 30, 45 and 60°C and the critical water content as well as the critical water activities were determined. Water content at the end of drying inferior or equal to 0.02 g/g d.b. is recommended to obtain stable fruit pieces at microbiological, physiochemical and rheological levels.

Desempenho agronômico e nutricional da nectarineira Sunraycer autoenraizada e enxertada sobre porta-enxertos clonais / Agronomic and nutritional performance of Sunraycer nectarine tree on their own roots and grafted on clonal rootstocks

Jimenes, Isabela Maria 26 October 2017 (has links)
Peach and nectarine producers employ scions grafted in seedling rootstocks, resulting in unevenness between plants and disregarding advantages brought by clonal rootstocks, with known genetic aspects. The present study aimed to evaluate the initial performance of 1-2-year-old Sunraycer nectarine trees on their own roots and grafted on thirteen clonal rootstocks in the edaphoclimatic conditions of Piracicaba city, São Paulo State, Brazil, in the years of 2015 and 2016. Results related to the occurrence of flowering, budding and harvest phases, the canopy volume, pruning fresh weight, fruit mass, number of fruits and production per plant, productive efficiency, yield and fruit transverse diameter are presented in the first chapter of this dissertation. The interval between the end of flowering and the end of the harvest period was 78 days to \'Sunraycer\' grafted onto \'G x N.9\' and \'Santa Rosa\' rootstocks and 64 days to this scion onto \'Ishtara\', shorter periods than those related to other rootstocks. \'Flordaguard\' and \'Ishtara\' induced higher and lower vigor to \'Sunraycer\', respectively, whereas \'Flordaguard\' enabled greater production to \'Sunraycer\'. The \'Sunraycer\' scion is negatively influenced by \'Cadaman\' rootstock in terms of production variables. Heavier fruits are provided by self-rooted plants. The traditional \'Okinawa\' does not stand out as a rootstock for \'Sunraycer\'. It is possible to harvest \'Sunraycer\' nectarines between 03/10 and 18/10 in Piracicaba, SP, which is a period of low supply. In the second chapter, the objective was to determine the foliar levels of macro and micronutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn and B) in Sunraycer nectarine trees, thirteen weeks after flowering to evaluate, interpret and determine their nutritional status, identifying some possible more efficient genetic materials in absorbing / translocating such elements. It was verified that clonal rootstocks and self-rooted plants provide a distinct nutritional composition to \'Sunraycer\' leaves. \'Ishtara\', \'Tsukuba-3\', \'Barrier\' and \'Flordaguard\' are efficient rootstocks to the absorption of most of the nutrients under Sunraycer nectarine trees. \'Santa Rosa\' allows more nutritional deficiencies to \'Sunraycer\' plants, as of nitrogen, potassium, calcium, sulfur, iron and zinc.

Verificação do conteúdo de disciplinas de bioquímica por análise e classificação de questões de provas / Verification of biochemistry contents on introductory courses through analysis and classification of exams questions

Miskalo, André Kisil 22 October 2010 (has links)
Espera-se com os resultados deste estudo mapear os conteúdos considerados importantes e a forma como são abordados para subsidiar a discussão sobre o estabelecimento de um currículo mínimo comum às disciplinas de Bioquímica / Educators in the most diverse fields face a common problem of managing the increasing amount of information with the same or even lower level of class hours in their courses. As a consequence, educators have to cover selected topics, which selection is entirely up to the teacher in most education institutions. In order to establish new teaching methodology while maintaining teaching quality, educators need first to select the most essential topics. Assuming that questions from biochemistry program tests reflect the topics considered most relevant by the faculty, questions from different courses offered by the Biochemistry Department of Universidade de São Paulo (USP) were analyzed with the purpose of determining (1) the extent and depth of the common topics of the basics biochemistry programs and (2) the existence of specific recurring topics for different careers. The adopted methodology seeked to identify the most recurring topics in tests questions and to classify the demanded cognitive level according to Blooms Taxonomy. The research identified Protein Structure and Metabolism Regulation as the most recurring topic, and indicates a strong predominance of low cognitive levels (Knowledge and Comprehension), with little presence of high cognitive levels (from Application to Evaluation). This study intended to outline the topics considered relevant by the faculty providing results that are required to focus the academic discussion for creating core curricula for biochemistry courses

Morad, Olivia 17 September 2014 (has links)
The thesis context is concerned with the control of theOn-demand contents distribution networks. The performance of suchinteractive distributed systems basically depends on the prediction ofthe user behavior and the bandwidth as a critical network resource.Prefetching is a well-known predictive approach in the World Wide Webwhich avoids the response delays by exploiting some downtime thatpermits to anticipate the user future requests and takes advantage ofthe available network resources. Prefetching control is a vitaloperation for the On-demand interactive systems where the instantaneousresponse is the crucial factor for the system success. The controller insuch type of interactive system operates in an uncertain environment andmakes sequences of decisions with long and short term stochasticeffects. The difficulty, then, is to determine at every system statewhich contents to prefetch into the cache. The prefetching plan duringan interactive streaming session can be modeled as a sequential decisionmaking problem by a Markov Decision Process (MDP). We focus on theprefetching control problem in which the controller seeks to reach aZero-Cost system state as quickly as possible. We model this controlproblem as a Negative Stochastic Dynamic Programming problem in which weminimize the undiscounted total expected cost. Within this context, weaddressed the following research questions: 1) How to provide anoptimal/approximate-optimal prefetching policy that, maximizes thebandwidth utilization while minimizes the user's blocking and latencycosts incurred along the way? 2) How to exploit structure in theprefetching control model to help efficiently compute such prefetchingcontrol policy with both computational efforts and storage memoryreduction? 3) How to conduct a performance evaluation study to evaluatedifferent prefetching heuristic algorithms based on the context of thecontrol optimization rather than the context of theempirical/simulation. For studying our research problem, we developedour MDP prefetching control model, PREF-CT, we established itstheoretical properties and we solved it by the Value Iteration algorithmas MDP algorithm for computing the optimal prefetching policy. Forcomputing the optimal prefetching policy efficiently, we detected aspecial structure that achieves more compact control model. This specialstructure permits to develop two strategically different algorithmswhich improve the complexities of computing the optimal prefetchingpolicy: - the first one is the ONE-PASS which is based mainly on solvinga system of linear equations simultaneously in only one iteration, whereas the second is the TREE-DEC which is based on Markov decisiontree decomposition in which sequential sets of systems of equations aresolved. For overcoming the problem of the curse of dimensionalityresulting from the computation of the optimal prefetching policy, weproposed the prefetching heuristic algorithm: the Relevant BlocksPrefetching algorithm (RBP). For evaluating and comparing prefetchingpolicies computed by different prefetching heuristic algorithms, wepresented a framework based on different performance measures. Weapplied the suggested framework under different costs configurations anddifferent user behaviors to evaluate the prefetching policies computedby our proposed prefetching heuristic algorithm; the RBP. Compared tothe optimal prefetching policies, the experimental analysis provedsignificant performance of the prefetching policies of the RBP heuristicalgorithm. In addition, the RBP prefetching heuristic algorithm isdistinguished by a clustering property which is of importance to reducesignificantly the memory necessary to store the prefetching policy tothe controller.

As sub-parcelas foram constituídas pelas cultivares IAC-Tatu ST (ereta) e IAC-Caiapó (rasteira)...(Resumo completo, clicar no acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: In Sao Paulo State, Brazil, peanut has been cultivated in rotation with sugarcane and pasture in two regions with different soil type and climate conditions. Nowadays, due to the increase of sugarcane area harvested without burning and the crop-livestock integration systems, the peanut growers have a great opportunity to plant in the conservation tillage, mainly in no-tillage system. Considering the specific morphological and physiological characteristic of peanut plant, the aims of this research were to study the agronomic characteristics and nutrient contents of two different peanut cultivars in three tillage systems in rotation with sugarcane and pasture, as well as their effects in some chemical, physical and microbiological soil attributes. Twelve field experiments were conducted from 1999/2000 to 2004/2005, at the followings places: Ribeirão Preto (Oxisoil), Pindorama (Ultisoil) and Mirassol (Ultisoil). Seven trials were installed on sugarcane straw and five in rotation with pasture, which were situated at APTA experimental station. Tillage treatments were arranged in split-plot randomized complete block design with four replications. The main plots were the tillage treatments (conventional, reduced and no-tillage) while the subplots were peanut cultivars (IACTatu ST and IAC-Caiapó). In the conventional tillage, soil was turned with a moldboard plow and disked. Reduced tillage was made with subsoiler shank (ASTMATIC 450 , Tatu Marchesan) after the herbicide application. In no-tillage systems, the sugarcane plant and pasture were killed with glyphosate (2.4 kg a.i.ha-1). Some agronomic characteristics (pod and kernels yield, percentage of sound mature kernels, plant density and dry matter of root in different layers), nodulation (number and dry matter) and nutrient contents (N,P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Cu, Mn, Zn) in plants were evaluated...(Complete abstract, acess undermentioned eletronic adress) / Doutor

This thesis research questions the material dimension of practices, especially that concerning the teaching and learning tools that are posters. The topic of my research is built into the analysis of the speech of teachers and the pupils. I try to identify their representations and views of the poster, as they say the practice, as they invest themselves according to the teaching methods they implement. The characterization of the poster practices according to the practical school subjects contribute to modeling in teaching and institutional spaces, in one of textbooks, teaching practices and pupils practices.
