Predictors of Influenza Vaccination Compliance Among Union and Nonunion Workers in a Pennsylvania Health Care System

Kalp, Ericka Lynne 01 January 2016 (has links)
To improve U.S. residents' health, advocates are focusing their efforts on workplace health. Researchers have found that unionization is a positive influence on workers' participation in health promotion programs relating to smoking and obesity prevention. However, the effect of union membership on other health promotion initiatives, such as influenza vaccination compliance among health care workers, has not been examined. The purpose of this quantitative study was to address this knowledge gap between a union and a nonunion health care facility in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The health belief model was used to determine if different domains of influenza vaccination perception predicted vaccination behaviors among union and nonunion health care workers. A secondary analysis was performed on the 2013-2014 Influenza Vaccination Survey, which was completed by 2,480 health care workers. While a chi-square analysis showed that vaccination compliance was not statistically different between facilities, a binary logistic regression revealed a significant difference in predicted vaccination behaviors for each domain of influenza vaccination perceptions. Among union health care workers, perceived barriers yielded the highest positive predictability of vaccination compliance, whereas perceived benefits were positively associated with vaccination compliance among nonunion workers. These study findings affect social change by identifying vaccine compliance predictors among union and nonunion health care workers. By focusing on these predictors, health care facilities may be able to improve levels of vaccination compliance and achieve the Joint Commissions' vaccination goal of 90% compliance amongst all healthcare workers.

How do the care workers meet the elderyś right to self-determination in retirement home?

Nilsson Östlund, Cassandra, Zogu, Arta January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of the essay was to investigate how older people's self-determination inretirement home is met, this through the care staff's perspective. To get an answer on thepurpose we used a qualitative method where we interviewed six care staff. Five of these weretrained assistant nurses and one of them worked as a care assistant, all interviewed haddifferent years of experience from the profession. Qualitative content analysis was used toanalyze the data collected through the interviews. Through the qualitative content analysis, several steps have been performed to analyze data, the work consisted of among other things, finding units of meaning, codes and then formulating themes. The results showed that theolder person, living in retirement home, may decide for himself at certain points in everydaylife. At the same time, the older person is not allowed to decide for himself to a greater extent. This dependes on both lack of time and care staff, additional factors that are affected by olderpeople's right to self - determination were physical and / or cognitive impairment. The resultwill also be that the care staff have an established value base of workers with and which isimplemented in their daily work. An analysis was made using the theoretical concept, motivation. The analysis showed, among other things, that external motivation, pressure fromthe chief in the form of lack of time and care staff lead to the elderly person not being met withself-determination to a greater extent. It also emerged from the analysis that internalmotivation in the form of dialogue and feedback from the chief at workplace meetingsregarding values base could contribute to increasing self-determination for the elderly inretirement home.

Child and youth care workers' knowledge and perception of and challenges related to attachment difficalties related by children residing in child and youth care centres : suggestions for social work support

Mhizha, Ropafadzai 01 1900 (has links)
Child and youth care workers (CYCWs) provide intervention and support to children and youth in child and youth care centres (CYCCs) The purpose of this study was to investigate CYCWs’ knowledge and perceptions of attachment difficulties of children residing in CYCCs and to provide suggestions for social work support. The study adopted the Attachment Theory and Circle of Courage Theory. Drawing on qualitative methodology, 16 participants employed in CYCCs in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan region, South Africa were purposively selected for in-depth, qualitative interviews. The eight-step data analysis method by Tesch (in Creswell, 2014:198) was used. To ensure trustworthiness of the findings, the researcher mainly used Guba’s model cited in Krefting (1990:214–222).The researcher adhered to prescribed ethical considerations. The study recommended that child and youth care as a profession should be recognised and supported to ensure quality services to children with attachment difficulties living in CYCCs. / Social Work

Abed Mohamed, Mirjam January 2023 (has links)
This research explores how women who wear the veil face discrimination and everyday racism in society. The purpose of the study is to investigate how veiled health care workers experience discrimination and everyday racism in health care from colleagues and patients. By studying women's vulnerability, it is possible to gain a better understanding of what veiled women go through. The veiled women meet new patients and colleagues every day. Every day is a new challenge for them. These women have to endure racist and discriminatory comments from patients and colleagues on a daily basis, which results in them being affected in their work. I interviewed four veiled healthcare professionals who were willing to share their personal experiences with discrimination and everyday racism. The results showed that the women used humor to deal with racism and all respondents suffered from anxiety and pressure when dealing with patients and colleagues. The respondents felt subordinated and excluded. They experienced ethnic discrimination and religious discrimination. The patients and colleagues could express hostility towards the veil and assume that the women were oppressed because they wore the veil.

Perceptions of Swedish older adults on the use of smart vacuum cleaners to support ageing in place

Singh, Satya Jeet, Poursadeghi Khiavi, Sahand January 2023 (has links)
This sequential study explores the perceptions of older adults and careworkers in Sweden regarding the benefits and challenges of smart vacuumcleaners. With a rapidly ageing population, understanding attitudes towardsthe use of such technology becomes essential. A mixed-methods approach, including questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, was used to gatherdata and provide a detailed understanding of the perceived benefits andchallenges associated with these devices. Findings suggest that older adultsperceive smart vacuum cleaners as beneficial in reducing cleaning assistancedependence and enhancing life quality. Concerns centred around affordabilityand fear for social isolation. Care workers saw potential for time-saving,leading to improved care. Despite some reservations, both groups recognizedthe potential benefits of smart vacuum cleaners. The study suggests the needfor larger, longitudinal studies to further explore these perspectives anddetermine the potential of smart vacuum cleaners in supporting ageing inplace.

It's the most important work we got, to take care of our elders" : A qualitative study concering home care workers´ intentions to remain in their profession from the perspektive of first-line managers.

Nordin, Maja, Pacheco Schymberg, Camilla January 2022 (has links)
The study aimed to examine home care workers’ intentions to remain within their profession and working conditions. Data collection was conducted through qualitative interviews with four first-line managers within private and municipal home care. The first-line managers described experiences of inadequacy, lack of influence and development opportunities, and the working hours as reasons for the care workers’ turnover intentions. Factors regarding remaining in the profession were noted as the importance of relational work, collegiate exchange, development opportunities, and support. The results indicated lack of resources as the main reason for home care workers leaving their profession, and the importance of remaining has been discussed based on the quality of elderly care. Elderly care has obligations to be conducted in a manner that meets the needs of the targeted group, which is why the home care workers’ competence and experience are of significant importance.

Van Niekerk, Karen 19 September 2011 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / Die huisouermodel word tans internasionaal in kinderhuise gevolg. / Internationally, children’s homes follow the houseparent model. A houseparent or houseparent couple act as surrogate parent(s) and live with children in a home, away from the main campus of the children’s home. Direct observation of the functioning of houseparents within the houseparent model brought awareness with regards to the complexity of houseparents’ tasks. The goal of this research was to conduct an exploratory study to determine what contribution key role players can make to support houseparents within the houseparent model with the fulfilment of their tasks. To achieve this goal, data was gathered through the application of a qualitative research study, utilising semi-structured interviews that were conducted with houseparents and key role players within three satellite homes. The qualitative data was analysed and the contribution that key role players can make to support houseparents in the fulfilment of their duties was described. / Social Work / M. Diac. Factors influencing community integrated management to childhood illness in rural areas

Van Zyl, Marjorie Alice 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MCurr)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Child mortality is a worldwide problem and, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), 8,1 million children under the age of five years die each year. The Millennium Development Goals focus on the worldwide reduction in child mortality by two-thirds between 2000 and 2015. Several studies show that worldwide Community Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (CIMCI) interventions by community care workers (CCWs) have a positive effect on child health. The goal of this study was to determine the factors influencing CIMCI in the rural areas of the West Coast District in the Western Cape of South Africa. The objectives for this study were to determine the factors influencing CIMCI carried out in rural areas by the CCWs, which were identified as: • having working hours that are adequate for such a comprehensive service package; • being adequately trained; • having adequate knowledge of the “16 Key Family Practices” of CIMCI; • having equipment that is adequate for the execution of their daily duties; • being able to cope with the challenges of working in rural and remote areas; and • receiving adequate supervision and support related to CIMCI. A descriptive, non-experimental exploratory research design with a quantitative approach was applied. The target population (N = 270) consisted of CCWs who are funded by the Provincial Government of the Western Cape (PGWC) in the West Coast District. For this study a response rate of 257 (95,18%) was obtained. Data was collected personally by the researcher with a self-administered questionnaire. The data was analysed with the assistance of a statistician and are presented in histograms and frequency tables. The participants were tested on their knowledge of CIMCI, and more than half of them achieved an average score that was not satisfactory. Statistically significant correlations were found between the participants’ total score achieved and highest school grade passed (p < 0. 01); their level of Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) training (p < 0.01); their attendance of the CIMCI five-day course (p < 0.00); and if they had done a refresher course on CIMCI (p < 0.00). The total score was also shown by the Mann-Whitney U test (p < 0.01) to have a direct relationship with whether they had received any health-related training after school. The conclusion that can be drawn is that the higher the level of education of the CCWs, the better their knowledge of CIMCI. This could also improve their work performance. The recommendations arising from this study include that CIMCI training should be standardised to ensure that the CCWs have adequate knowledge. The current policy on community-based services (CBS) of the Provincial Government Western Cape Department of Health should also be standardised to ensure adequate working hours, training, equipment and supervision, and to take into consideration the challenges of working in rural areas. In conclusion, should these recommendations be implemented, CIMCI will have a huge, positive impact on child morbidity and mortality. CCWs will be ensured adequate working hours in relation to their workload, and will receive adequate training, equipment and supervision. This will reduce the challenges CCWs face and strengthen their services in rural areas.
