O mercado como dispositivo de gestão da ordem em uma favela paulistana ou quando a pobreza se tornou solução / The market as management device of the order in a São Paulo slum quarter or when poverty becomes the solution

Ramachiotti, Bruna Augusta Mattos 24 February 2014 (has links)
The objective of this research is to examine ways of managing poverty, as these seem to be shaping up in the Paraisópolis slum quarter. This is a diagram of power relations, as well as forms of social and urban intervention that articulate \'traditional\' devices such as philanthropy, modern mechanisms guided by market criteria and local regulatory mechanisms. In this scenario, the so-called entrepreneurship and the celebration of poverty, in their entrepreneurial power, combine with a host of other devices order management, seemingly disparate, and impact the production of space. The marketplace devices emerge, in this way, as forms management order under the logic of governmentality (Foucault) - managing populations under the rule of \"conduct of conduct\".

O apóstolo pregresso e as alegorias da fundação -  Anchieta, um mito fundador no IV centenário da cidade de São Paulo / The pregressive apostle and the allegories of the foundation: Anchieta, a founding myth in IV Centenary in São Paulo city

Ednilson Aparecido Quarenta 25 September 2009 (has links)
This paper analysis the debates about the choice of the founder of the City of São Paulo, between 1953 and 1954, when it was celebrated its IV Century Foundation Anniversary. There were many discussions in the media of that time newspapers and magazines that were published with relative frequency in the city - about the myth of the founder of the City of São Paulo and the attributes that gave sense and meaning to the paulistanidade. These manifestations highlighted the countless symbols nominated as the icons of the paulistana social memory and its identity. Through the analysis of large media material, we get to the core hypothesis of this paper: the configuration, in this moment, of José de Anchieta as the myth of the founder of the City of São Paulo.

No labirinto da memória: fabricação e uso político do passado de Mossoró pelas famílias Escóssia e Rosado (1902-2002) / In the labyrinth of memory: fabrication and political use of the past of Mossoró by the Escóssia and Rosado families (1902-2002)

Marcilio Lima Falcão 20 February 2018 (has links)
This study brings an analysis of the fabrication and use of the past as one of the strategies of domain of the Escóssia and Rosado families in Mossoró from 1902 to 2002. The investigation was conducted by innumerable sources, among which the press, especially the O Mossoroense newspaper, stood out, because it was in its pages that the city\'s past was being built from the selection of two events: September 30th of 1883 (date when the city abolished local slavery) and June 13th, 1927 (when the city resisted the attack of the gang of cangaceiros led by Lampião). The objective was to comprehend the incorporation of these events into the municipal civic calendar and its transformation into public celebrations, which took as reference the narratives presented in the newspapers, cordéis (folk literature), photographs and works of the scholars of the city that were connected to the publisher Coleção Mossoroense. Through this documentation, it was tried to understand how the narratives on the past of people from Mossoró, present in the celebrations, correspond to a framework of essential memory, especially, to the agency and placement of the political image of the Escóssia and Rosado families as builders of the past of the city.

The Vigulino Century: cangaÃo in the (con)fusions of the memory in between celebrations of LampiÃo in the present time.

This paper aims at contributing to the discussion on the culture of the contemporary memory of cangaÃo. The cangaÃo, a banditry phenomenon experienced between the second half of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century in the Brazilian Northeast, ended decades ago, but its memory survived in several cultural backgrounds. The expansion of this controversy memoryâs reframing movement, understood as a regional result of an ever-present past, due to carrying in its heart the dilemma of remembering or forgetting, raises intense questioning, especially regarding the different validations that make it a claimed, dissonant and contested cultural heritage. The research goes over its agreements and conflicts between the 1980s and 2010, whose inflection point are the celebrations of LampiÃoâs birth centenary in the late 1990s, in a fragment marked particularly by the celebrations to this cangaceiroâs death â its fiftieth anniversary ( 1988), sixtieth (1998) and seventieth (2008). The main objective is to question this memories analyzing its (con)fusions in a strengthening period in the public scenario; their battles on centenary celebrations; and its celebrative cults in the festivalâs calendar created after the event. The study of these CangaÃoâs Memory, in close relationship with the northeastern time, discusses temporal pieces that claim ruptures, continuities and other branches in the imaginary land of the said regional identities. Starting especially with the assumption of the History of Memory, we examine institutionsâ performances, groups and individuals, such as former bandits (cangaceiros), family, popular artists, filmmakers, chroniclers, victims, intellectuals and journalists, through some historical sources - focused in the press, but also articulating with official projects, books, twine, brochures, photographs, movies and interviews â which allow us to think about the problems raised. This paper is developed in the Research Group on Heritage and Memory (GEPPM-UFC/CNPq).

Creating History Towards Utopia: The 2016 Taiwanese LDS Celebration

Chang, Ting-Chun 01 June 2017 (has links)
This thesis argues that emotions and memories in a community are essential to shaping a common future. Furthermore, when performed on stage, these memories and emotions create a utopian experience that moves performers and audience members towards a brighter future. The foundation for this thesis is built upon the ideas of utopian performative theories combined with the Asian Ganzhi belief that every sixty years a new cycle of hope begins. This thesis also includes a practical work. I was invited to write and direct a cultural production for the 60th year anniversary celebration of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Taiwan. The practical experience of creating this production and the utopian theories and Ganzhi beliefs interacted throughout the process of creating the production and writing this thesis. These utopian and Ganzhi ideas influenced the production and the production tested the theories. Historical memories of one generation performed by and to the next generation is a way for a community to shape a brighter future together. The performance of the 60th year anniversary celebration was based on the re-creation, restoration and emotional connection of the members of the performing group to the personal historical memories of the previous generation. When the Taiwanese LDS members prepared, rehearsed and performed their cultural celebration in October of 2016, the production shaped a common, brighter future.

PARENT PARTNERS' PERCEPTIONS OF REUNIFICATION CELEBRATION AND THE IMPACT ON REUNIFIED PARENTS

Walker, Marley Leila, Anderson, Tre'Nise JeMel 01 June 2019 (has links)
In the study, the researchers explored parent partners’ perceptions on reunification celebration events and the impact the event has on fostering reunified parents’ use of positive parenting skills. A qualitative design was completed using convenience sampling. The researchers studied previous research that focused on the reunification process and the general importance of celebrations in child welfare as a precursor to their study. The researchers conducted face-to-face interviews with nine parent partners from one child welfare agency in Southern California. Our findings revealed four major themes of the study. First, we learned of the importance of recognizing reunified parents’ for their successful family reunification efforts. Second, we learned of the participants’ perceptions of reunified parents being nominated and or honored. Third, we found the participants selection criteria for nominating reunified parents’ for the event and their perceptions of the reunified parents’ parental growth. Finally, we learned of the participants suggestions for future reunification celebration events. The researchers discussed limitations found in this study such as a small sample size of nine participants. Another limitation included the study’s focus on the parent partners’ perception of the event; and lacked the perspective of reunified parents’ who were honored at the reunification celebration. Lastly, the researchers provided recommendations for social work practice and research including increased social worker involvement in the reunification celebration and adoption of this event in other child welfare agencies. The researchers recommend that further research be conducted to obtain insight from the perspective of reunified parents’ who were honored at this event.

New Alignments in Ritual, Ceremony and Celebration

Cameron, Roger Neil, n/a January 2004 (has links)
Increasingly, cultural workers and artists from many disciplines are finding themselves involved in the creation of public and private rituals, ceremonies and celebrations. Focusing on ritual and celebration in Australian contexts, this thesis posits a new categorisation of the types of event that might be encountered, grouping and examining them according to their action upon participants with the aim of enabling a more practical methodology of design in contemporary societal conditions. Existing categories, which have defined these age-old activities in terms of anthropological observation or social intention, must now be regarded as obsolete because they take no account of rapid and widespread changes in degrees of adherence to traditional belief systems, in social orientation and in Western cultural practices. There is a need to reappraise why individuals and communities might continue to hold rituals and celebrations, and how these can be designed, managed and operated most effectively. The thesis identifies four major categories of ritual: Transformation, Reinforcement, Transcendence and Catharsis. It argues that, by recognising the differences between how each category operates for participants and also certain commonalities across categories, effectiveness of design is facilitated. In developing parameters for each category and giving examples of contemporary praxis, the writer stresses the importance of understanding traditional ceremonies so that elements of a rich repertoire of techniques developed over long periods can be planned into new rituals for contemporary application, despite the dissipation of shared, coherent belief systems in a highly secularised culture. This impels consideration of questions of cultural sensitivity, raises the need for close community involvement in design, and requires exploration of managing the challenges of multiple signification. Contemporary cultural contexts for ritual and celebratory events are marked by plurality, multi-vocalism and multicultural experience. Designers thus need to achieve, out of difference, an event that produces coherence, deep effects for each participant and a sense of shared experience. The thesis demonstrates means to this end through informed praxis, that is, by practitioners ensuring that theory and practice are working together in these complex contexts that involve the well being of individuals and communities. The categories have been identified through investigations into the literature of myth, ritual and celebration, helpful frameworks developed in cognitive science, and extensive research provided by thirty years of practice in the field. As a designer and director of rituals and celebrations, the writer seeks both to confirm the importance of the artist within the process and to demonstrate a new, practical, ethically located and effective approach for the education of intending practitioners. No claim is made that the four categories are definitive or mutually exclusive of one another. It is accepted that in many situations the categories might coalesce, be added to and/or fragment. However, the categorisation provides a fresh vantage point from which to view the potentially powerful effects of ritual experience, an effective tool of construction for the use of artists and cultural activists working in this field, and an informed basis for praxis. In developing this new categorisation the writer argues an ongoing need for rituals and celebrations to clarify and enrich the lives of individuals and the community while stressing the importance of careful and appropriate design of such events.
