Caesar, Konstantin, Karl und FriedrichKloskowski, Irina 02 February 2011 (has links)
With regard to the construction of sense in the Chronicle of Emperors, an inherent didactic concept can be detected. New presentation techniques of the literary medium of the 12th century like a hero`s two-fold adventure pathway to maturity allow for more complex views of the well-known Caesar tales. On the other hand, dialogue is still dominant as a rhetorical means as structure and narration of the Charlemagne and the Constantine tales disclose. As a final aspect, the Continuatio, the first Bavarian continuation of the Chronicle of Emperors, is under scrutiny. The progressive concept of intertextuality concentrates on the new text, not entirely ignoring the original text, but rather embedding old context in new surroundings.

Léon Frederic (1856-1940), « gothique moderne » : carrière d’un artiste belge dans l’Europe de la fin du XIXe siècle / Léon Frederic (1856-1940), “gothique moderne” : career of a Belgian artist in Europe at the end of the 19th centuryFoudral, Benjamin 03 July 2019 (has links)
The Belgian painter Léon Frederic (1856-1940), nicknamed the “gothique moderne”, played a key role at the turn of the 20th century as one of the main actors of Belgian modern art, both on the national and international artistic scene. Based on a rigorous examination of a studio collection of several thousand pieces, archives and unpublished correspondence, as well as on the realization of the catalogue raisonné of the work, this study aims to reconstruct the trajectory of an omnipresent painter, forgotten faced with the "mythology of rupture" of the avant-garde. If the history of art has retained the image of a mystical painter recluse in the countryside, the comprehension of his career enabled to reconstruct the portrait of a “faux-naïf” aware of the promotional stakes. Frederic belongs to a new Belgian elite who was at the origin of the intense cultural life in Brussels. Throughout his career, he has developed a new image of the "people", worker and peasant, both as a point of convergence of the necessary and moral image, wanted by the supporters of the social art, and as a projection of a cultural imagination, specific to an elite in search of a better future for the underprivileged classes. Stylistically, his art, approaching the "archaïsme moderne" theorized by Emile Verhaeren, imposes it in the new international and modernist field of the Secessions as the ideal and sought-after ethnotype of the "Flemish" artist. A bourgeois and marginal painter, elite and social, national and cosmopolitan, Frederic appeared as one of the heralds of the modernity and invites us to question the binarity of the conception of art at the end of the 19th century.

The path of the arts by the writings of Vivant Denon: a noble patron for a new France (1778-1815)Morales, Maria Angélica Beghini 24 August 2015 (has links)
The object of this research is to study the contradictory elements - both aristocratic features as the modernizing ones - in the transition period from the eighteenth century to the nineteenth, present in the writings of Dominique-Vivant Denon (1747-1825), Directeur Général des Musées during the Consulate and the Empire. We seek to understand how a figure derived from the French provincial nobility managed to balance the game of political forces that unfolded in France with the Revolution and how he became a fundamental character in the consolidation of a major cultural and political projects of the period: the reformulation of Louvre Museum. In a broader perspective, the present study seeks to understand and investigate, through the writings of Vivant Denon, the phenomenon of reinterpretation of a cultural tradition associated with the Old Regime in the construction of the Napoleonic Empire.

This PhD thesis makes a revision and a reiterpretation of epic texts and their hybrid variants in Brazil, from the neoclassical tendencies of the 18th century to the romantic tendencies of the 19th century, which correspond to the “decisive moments” of Brazilian literature’s formation according to Antonio Candido. At the same time, we do a reinterpretation of the Brazilian literary critique, focusing mainly on the observation, under a new perspective, of Fomação da Literatura Brasileira (1959), Candido’s book, in a way to rethink the traces of formation in these texts and their relation with the formation of Brazil as a nation. We understand that literature embodies and exposes impasses, repormulating them, ultimately allying literary form and social-historical process. In this sense, the argument of the present work follws Brazilian literature discussions made by Candido and Schwarz, bringing conceots to define the relations between literature and the historical process regarding the formation of the heroic poetry in Brazil. To this end, two ambits were analyzed: first, we reread the critical fortune related to the genre along the 19th century, and compare the modernist poets’ point of view to Candido’s text; secondly, we search for traces of internal aesthetical/structural composition inherent to the genre (such as proem, diegesis, heroicity). We aim to connect those points to the formative field if interpretation, which includes narrative voice and antagonism/protagonism of elements or characters – specially the Amerindians. Besides that, we seek for the relation between social, historical and literau from in Brazil (both Colonial and Independent) and the research involves short observations of that theory in O Uraguai, O Caramuru, A Confederação dos Tamoios e I-Juca Pirama. We investigate the mediation made by the literature of the 18th and de 19th centuries regarding the heroic theme and its form, comprehending the narrative as part of a specific literary process, based on the texts of the materialist critique in Brazil – in which the concept of peripheral nation is used. We inquire about the formation of Brazil – in which the concept of peripheral nation is used. We inquire about the formation of Brazil as a nation, as well as its materialist critique and analysis of the foundation of this literature and of the effort in the application of the aesthetical genre here studied, as well as a social-aesthetical and structural-historical evaluation.

The portrait, long considered as a rigid pictorial genre, became increasingly lively through the progressive introduction of gestural expression. This idea appeared as early as 1440 in Filippo Lippi’s female portraits, in 1450 in Andrea del Castagno’s painting of a man and in 1470, in Antonello da Messina’s mimes. But the standard surrounding is bust-length portraiture and other restrictions on movement, imposed by the commissions, lasted until the 16th century. Despite various dissenting works, such as those of Antonello da Messina, Leonardo Da Vinci, or later, Bartolomeo Passerotti, the Princely model held sway.In Antiquity, three literary categories, each with a different approach, addressed the appearance of the body and civilization of the customs : educational precepts often contained within vaster literary works, physiognomic treatises — which attempt to read from faces an individual’s intentions and destiny — and rhetorical studies which, in particular, concern the ethos and the pathos, but equally the orator’s gestures. During the Renaissance these three disciplines all influenced various domains, which are interested, at one point or another, in the gesture. The Quattocento’s didactic treatises, which paved the way for a true reform, were replaced by manuals of etiquette in the 16th century. From 1455, the Lombard dancing masters wrote the initial elements of a theory of dance. Artistic treatises on painting and sculpture insist on the decorum which included gesture. At the very beginning of the 17th century, a certain number of modern conventions were recorded in illustrated collections of chironomy.Far from considering the finger, the hand or the members as semantic details, this thesis shows that body movement is a social signal to be placed back in its environment. It open on the history of education, central in that of gesture, as well as on that of the genre, or still the place of children and the parenthood. An important place was dedicated to the history of the garment, the one that was chose for these pictures.Through this work, it becomes obvious that the Middle Ages are not the only period to have seen developing a "civilization of the gesture". The analysis of texts, of Antiquity as of Renaissance, reveals a remarkable continuity in the conception and the theories relative to the body movements, underlain by the Oratorical Institution, particularly the part dealing with the actio. Quintilien had a long-term reception in the arts of preaching and, in a more subtle way, his qualities of educator and observer of the childhood also favoured his transmission in the educational frame. This author taught the use scheduled of the gesture to support the speech, considering a defect the carelessness in "the toga, the shoe and the hair". Already for him, this care was to be imperceptible, the education and the body care becoming as a second nature, the sprezzatura before time. Browsing our images, the reference to the actio that got established since Antiquity in education, expression, and both pictorial and theatrical imagery, acknowledges how precocious that civilization was and how perennial it has been. The gesture is asserted as a living heritage, transmitted more or less consciously through time, through a myriad of conduits and disciplines, including the portrait, both as recipient and vector.

Considering an eclectic and historical scope of analysis, this dissertation will argue about the execution of a mixed administrative system, based on institutional nodes interconnected in a form of network system, operated on the behalf of an overseas jurisdictional space. Casting some questions related to the different situations concerned with the Portuguese Expansion in the West Central Africa, as well as reflecting some inquiries posed by the recent historiography, here we stand for a settle of ambivalent and ambiguous series of movements emerged from the Portuguese Angolas overseas domain, calling up for the importance of some political and institutional forms of proceedings. They were all managed in order to resolve some issues related with the Portuguese Angola, paying attention to the recruitment and mobilizations of the Portuguese war machine, elucidating how the local political actors interacted with the conquistas and how was carried out the institutional and economical relations between Luanda and the interior entrepôts. All the internal hierarchies and luso-african contacts was settled down in a conflictive environment, crossed through social tensions, institutional frictions and political shocks. Finally, we conclude that some forms of domination and intermediation in the Portuguese Angola were sustained by a correlation between juxtapositions and agglutinations, but only if two demands were attended: the enlargement of the economical exploitation through the transatlantic slave trade and the institutional and political penetration of the African continent.

Hipólito da Costa em Londres: libertadores, whiggs e radicais no discurso político do Correio Braziliense (1808-1812) / Hipólito da Costa in London: liberators, whiggs and radicals in the political discourse of Correio Braziliense (1808-1812)Buvalovas, Thais Helena dos Santos 01 March 2013 (has links)
Hipólito José da Costa became renowned as editor of Correio Braziliense, a periodical which he published during his exile in London, from 1808 to 1822. The most recent historiography in Portuguese has identified Hipólito as heir to the Portuguese enlightened reformism, but his publication´s discourse shows that he was moving in much wider circles. This thesis demonstrates that Correio Braziliense was inserted in a very broad textual network, with Anglo-American affiliation and transoceanic extent, whose main center of gravity and articulation was the British capital. The texts published by the Portuguese-Brazilian exile from the years 1808 to 1812, the period which is covered by this work, allows one to clearly distinguish his affiliation with a set of ideas which has no reference to the mental world of the Portuguese society and whose nexus can be found in the so-called whiggism, as well as in more radical aspects of British political thought.

Rudyard Kipling was a traveller all his life and a champion of the British Empire at the time when its territorial stability was put at risk; he knew India, the U.S.A., South Africa and Sussex intimately. His direct and physical experience of the globe frames the thematic, narrative and stylistic characteristics of his novels and short story collections. Through the notion of borderline, relationships of differentiation, opposition, contact and exchange are built up thematically, in the narrative and in the style: the traveller is represented as a conqueror, an adventurer or a wanderer and global space is apprehended either politically or poetically. Imperial space is necessarily delineated and Kipling conceives of an Empire federating a mosaic of nations. Likewise, Kipling’s sentences stylistically patch up diverse languages, dialects and registers without endangering their textual unity and his narration hinges on the relation between separate elements and the whole text. The narrative authority creates converging lines between stories and networks appear between books, building up a coherent fictional world which suggests the possibility of an opening in this highly demarcated space. In their internal organisation, the books are at once composite and unified, the main narrative interacting with poems and illustrations in the short story collections and with micro narratives in the novels. Text becomes truly figurative in the annotated maps and when the typographical space is modern and significant. Kipling’s literary space dynamically confronts physical territories and a linguistic representative space, the textual organisation and the narrative world it depicts.
