Tile Drainage, Beds, and Fe-EDDHA Application Effect on Soybean Production

Holmes, Lucas Connor January 2018 (has links)
Eastern North Dakota has received excessive rainfall events since 1995, and soils are prone to waterlogging. This research evaluated the effects of subsurface tile drainage, raised beds, and iron-chelate (Fe-EDDHA) seed-application on iron-deficiency chlorosis (IDC) incidence in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], soybean growth, and yield, across six environments during 2013 and 2014. Tile drainage without beds increased soybean yield and reduced IDC by 11%. Beds resulted in more vigorous plants with 9% more biomass and increased soybean yield by 6%. There was no yield advantage to using both tile and raised beds within the same field. The Fe-EDDHA reduced plant population and IDC expression, increased plant biomass, but did not result in a yield increase. Farmers are encouraged to consider utilizing raised beds as a means to mitigate excess water. Additional research is needed to determine the cause of lower established plant density after seed application with Fe-EDDHA. / Minnesota Soybean Research and Promotion Council / North Dakota Soybean Council / DuPont Pioneer

Kinetics and Mechanisms of Ligand Exchange Reactions of Chelate Complexes

Cortés, José E. (José Enrique) 05 1900 (has links)
Certain ligand substitution reactions proceed to a complete displacement of the chelate ligand. Certain reactions proceed through a mechanism involving an initial fission of the tungsten-sulfur bond to afford a coordinatively-unsaturated intermediate which is rapidly attacked by chlorobenzene. The resulting solvated intermediate establishes an equilibrium which involves desolvation-solvation. Although main group organometallic chemistry has received a great deal of attention, this discussion will be centered in organotransition metal chemistry, in particular, metal carbonyls.

Responses of two grass species to plant growth regulators, fertilizer N, chelated Fe, salinity and water stress

Nabati, Daryoosh A. 12 October 2005 (has links)
A series of studies were initiated to investigate growth responses of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa praetensis L.) and creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.) to foliar applications of two plant growth regulators (PGR) and/or chelated Fe (Na Fe diethylene triamine pentaacetate). Environmental variables considered were N levels, soil moisture regimes, and saline irrigations. The two materials investigated for PGR properties were a commercial product called Roots (a cold-water extract of seaweed and peat humus fortified with "intermediate metabolites" and thiamine) and the systemic fungicide propiconazole, trade name: (Banner) and chemical name: [1- {(2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-4-propyl-l,3-dioxolan-2yl}methyl-l H-1,2,4-triazole]. Fortified seaweed extract (FSE) was applied at 9.3 L/ha, and propiconazole (PPC) was applied at 0.93 L a.i/ha. Each was applied alone or in conjunction with chelated Fe at 0.11 kg a.i/ha. Kentucky bluegrass foliage height, root and shoot dry weight, and several foliar nutrients increased following PGR treatments when grown under either limited soil moisture or saline irrigation. Foliar applications of PGR and/or chelated Fe to creeping bentgrass reduced wilting and evapotranspiration, and increased leaf water status, root strength, and shoot dry matter at two levels of N during and after drought stress. / Ph. Treatment of a cyanide-free copper electroplating solution by electrodialysis: study of ion transport and evaluation of water and inputs recovery

Scarazzato, Tatiana 27 February 2018 (has links)
The two most common commercial copper baths are the acid sulfate copper bath and the alkaline cyanide copper bath. Alkaline copper baths are mostly used to coat parts with complex geometry and to avoid galvanic deposition when depositing a metal on a less noble substrate. Because of the toxicity of cyanide compounds, alternative baths have been developed using different complexing agents. The starting point of the present study is a cyanide free strike bath developed for copper plating on Zamak substrates developed by the Institute for Technological Research of the State of São Paulo/ Brazil. The replacement of a raw material such as cyanide must be economically advantageous and technically feasible. Therefore, this study intended to propose an alternative to the treatment of liquid wastes from the mentioned bath, aiming at simultaneous water reclamation and chemicals recovery in a closed system. The electrodialysis membrane separation process was studied, using a laboratory-scale system operating with a synthetic solution simulating the rinsing waters from the HEDP-based bath. The feasibility of the technique was evaluated by analyzing operational parameters such as ion extraction, demineralization rate, concentration rate, current efficiency for each anionic specie and average energy consumption. Because HEDP is a chelating agent, the transport of Cu(II) HEDP chelates through anion exchange membranes was also evaluated by means of electrochemical methods. Chronopotentiometric and current-voltage curves were constructed for different model solutions containing the same compounds as the original bath. A relation between the presence of chelates in the solutions and the fixed ion exchange group could be established. Lastly, deposition tests were performed using electrolytes containing the recycled inputs and the characteristics of the coatings were analyzed. The results showed that an electrodialysis stack using strongly basic anion exchange membranes was suitable to produce treated solutions and a concentrate containing the ions from the bath. The concentrate could be added to the copper bath to compensate eventual drag-out losses without affecting the quality of the coatings. Thus, the application of electrodialysis was shown to be a feasible alternative for recovering water and inputs from the evaluated solution, reducing the wastewater generation and saving natural resources. / Scarazzato, T. Spontaneous metathesis of bis-chelated PdII(L-S,O)2 complexes in solution : a rp-HPLC study

Van der Molen, Lynndal 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc (Chemistry and Polymer Science))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / N,N-dialkyl-N-acyl(aroyl)thiourea ligands form stable chelated complexes in a cis configuration with the platinum group metals. Such chelated complexes are generally considered substitutionally “inert” in solution, however, it was found that cis-bis(N,Ndialkyl- N-acyl(aroyl)thioureato)M(II) complexes (M = Ni(II), Pd(II) or Pt(II)) readily undergo facile chelate metathesis reactions in solution at room temperature. Upon mixing two different parent complexes, a mixed-ligand product formed in solution, with an equilibrium, or steady state, between the two parent complexes and the mixed-ligand product being attained after a period of time: M(LA)2 + M(LB)2 M(LA)(LB). All three complexes remained in solution even with a ten-fold excess of one parent complex. The presence of the mixed-ligand products in solution was confirmed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and a crystal structure of the mixed-ligand complex cis-Pd(L3-S,O)(L4-S,O). Though a number of attempts were made, it was not possible to either isolate or synthesise the mixed-ligand complexes exclusively. The equilibrium distribution and the rate of the metathesis reaction were influenced by a number of factors, including the central metal ion, the substituents on the complexed ligands and the reaction medium. In addition to these, a number of other factors, some unexpected, also played a role in the rate of the reaction. Initial concentration of the parent complexes, the age of the solutions upon mixing and the presence of impurities or additives all contributed to the overall rate of reaction. The results from these rate studies highlighted the necessity for extensively purified compounds. In addition to chelate metathesis reactions, the exchange between a cis-Pd(L-S,O)2 complex and an unbound HL ligand in solution was also investigated. Again, even with an excess of unbound ligand, all three possible complexes were present in solution. It has been shown previously that these complexes undergo a photoinduced cis-trans isomerisation under intense light, and it has been proposed that the reverse trans-cis process, which occurs in the dark, may be a metathesis reaction. In light of this, the relationship between these chelate metathesis reactions and the reverse trans-cis reaction was briefly investigated. Though the metathesis reactions were a general phenomenon in the Ni(II), Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes of the aforementioned ligands, the experiments focused mainly on the cis-Pd(L-S,O)2 complexes due to the favourable timescales of their metathesis reactions. The primary technique to observe these reactions was reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (rp-HPLC). The timescales involved in the cis-Pd(L-S,O)2 metathesis reactions as well as the stability of the Pd(II) complexes under the HPLC conditions made this technique ideal.

Traceurs fluorescents à base de lanthanides en milieu complexe / Lanthanide-based fluorescent tracers in complex media

Brichart, Thomas 07 July 2014 (has links)
Ce dosage permettra alors d'ajuster leur concentration dans les différents puits de production de pétrole / Tracers are objects allowing the determination of the position or the distribution of a product; tracers are currently used in a great variety of domains. Despite the fact that each field has it's own specifications, it is possible to find tracers in medicine (contrast agents), anti-counterfeiting or geological exploration. We have developed lanthanide complex tracers for oil field injection waters. Those tracers, derived from the DOTA, have been detected at concentration lower than 1 ppb, thanks to a simple and compact apparatus. This detection has been made possible by the use of time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy, this technique allows us to get rid of the background noise created by the intrinsic fluorescence of oil residues that are present in production waters. We also demonstrated how we can, through a reverse microemulsion synthesis, encapsulate several different dyes inside a single nanoparticle composed of a gold core and a silica shell. We showed as well, how those particles can be used as smart tracers to gather data, such as temperature, pH, solvents, etc. inside the well. Finally the use of lanthanides and scale inhibitors properties allowed us to create a simple and fast dosing protocol of such scale inhibitors in injection waters. This dosage will then allow the quick adjustment of their concentration inside each well

Two experiments were carried out to evaluate the efficiency of using iron chelates in hydroponic rocket salad in a greenhouse.

Synthese und kolloidale Eigenschaften neuartiger Blockcopolymere mit beta-Dicarbonyl Einheiten = Synthesis and colloidal properties of a novel type of block copolymers bearing beta-dicarbonyl residues / Synthesis and colloidal properties of a novel type of block copolymers bearing beta-dicarbonyl residues

Krasia, Theodora January 2003 (has links)
The present work is dealing with the first synthesis and characterisation of amphiphilic diblock copolymers bearing b-dicarbonyl (acetoacetoxy) chelating residues. Polymers were obtained by Group Transfer Polymerisation (GTP)/acetoacetylation and controlled radical polymerisation techniques (RAFT).

Different micellar morphologies of poly(n-butyl methacrylate)-block-poly[2-(acetoacetoxy)ethyl methacrylate] (pBuMA-b-pAEMA) were observed in cyclohexane as a selective solvent. Depending on the block length ratio, either spherical, elliptical, or cylindrical micelles were formed. The density of the polymer chains at the core/corona interface is considerably higher as compared to any other strongly segregating system reported in the literature. It is demonstrated that there are H-bond interactions existing between acetoacetoxy groups, which increase the incompatibility between block segments. In addition, such interactions lead to the formation of secondary structures (such as b-sheets or globular structures) and larger superstructures in the micrometer length scale.

Block copolymers were also used to solubilise metal ion salts of different geometries and oxidation states in organic media, in which are otherwise insoluble. Sterically stabilised colloidal hybrid materials are formed, i.e. monodisperse micelles having the metal ion salt incorporated in their core upon complexation with the ligating pAEMA block, whereas pBuMA forms the solvating corona responsible for stabilisation in solution. Systematic studies show that the aggregation behaviour is dependent on different factors, such as the tautomeric form of the beta-dicarbonyl ligand (keto/enol) as well as the nature and amount of added metal ion salt.
