HIGH-FLUX GAS VENTING IN THE EAST SEA, KOREA, FROM ANALYSIS OF 2D SEISMIC REFLECTION DATA.

Haacke, R. Ross, Park, Keun-Pil, Stoian, Iulia, Hyndman, Roy D., Schmidt, Ulrike 07 1900 (has links)
Seismic reflection data from a multi-channel streamer deployed offshore Korea reveal evidence of hydrateforming gases being vented into the ocean. Numerous, localised vent structures are apparent from reduced seismic reflection amplitude, high seismic velocities, and reflector pull-up. These structures penetrate upward from the base of the gas hydrate stability zone (GHSZ) and are typically several hundred metres wide, and only a few hundred metres high. Underlying zones of reduced reflection amplitude and low velocities indicate the presence of gas many kilometers below the seabed, which migrates upward through near-vertical conduits to feed the vent structures. Where the local geology and underlying plumbing indicates a high flux of gases migrating through the system, the associated vent structures show the greatest change of reflector pull-up (the greatest concentration of hydrate) to be near the seabed; where the local geology and underlying plumbing indicates a moderate flux of gases, the greatest change of reflector pullup (the greatest concentration of hydrate) is near the base of the GHSZ. The distribution of gas hydrate in the high-flux gas vent is consistent with the recent salinity-driven model developed for a rapid and continuous flow of migrating gas, while the hydrate distribution in the lower-flux vent is consistent with a liquid-dominated system. The high-flux vent shows evidence of recent activity at the seabed, and it is likely that a substantial amount of gas is passing, or has passed, through this vent structure directly into the overlying ocean.

DIMENSIONAMENTO E AVALIAÇÃO DO POTENCIAL DE ARREFECIMENTO DE EDIFICAÇÃO DE ENSINO ATRAVÉS DE VENTILAÇÃO POR EFEITO CHAMINÉ EM SANTA MARIA - RS / DIMENSIONING AND COOLING POTENTIAL EVALUATION BY CHIMNEY EFFECT VENTILATION IN EDUCATIONAL BUILDING IN SANTA MARIA RS

Christmann, Laura Landerdahl 28 August 2015 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Natural ventilation is recognized by the scientific community as an important strategy for the promotion of thermal comfort. It s application in real situations, however, is extremely low, which is believed to be due to the lack of specific information as well as the lack of reliability in the success of these strategies. The present study aimed to propose, measure and evaluate natural ventilation strategy. It was defined the ventilation through the chimney effect for multiple floors educational buildings, disregarding the wind incidence, in the city of Santa Maria, RS, Bioclimatic Zone 2. Eight sizes of frames combinations have been proposed to be analyzed. Simulations with all openings combinations were made through DesignBuilder software. Based on the simulations results, it was calculated the maximum possible wind speeds through the strategy. Obtained such values, it was possible to analyze the thermal comfort gains with the different combinations of frames. It sets up, as the most suitable design and better performance, the use of all the frames in the same size, this being equivalent to 5,71% of the floor area. Analyzing through adaptive comfort, such configuration has resulted in reduction of degree-hour of discomfort in 27,9%, 33,3%, 38,8% and 42.7% for one floor, two floors, three floors and four floors building, respectively, comparing to the building without the use of the strategy. Since the results for the analyzed situation, compared to the recommended values by normatives for thermal confort condition, the strategy is evaluate as good potential and easily aplication in real situations.

The air quality has a direct link with the life quality society, lately, a large number of cases of air pollution have been happening in the great urban centers, as well as diseases caused by the poor air quality. These facts have forced the government organs to create standards for the air regulations and also for the atmospheric emissions that generally are the main responsible for the air quality alterations. This study had as goal the determination of heavy metals and other elements (Barium, Bromine, Calcium, Lead, Chlorine, Copper, Chromium, Strontium, Iron, Manganese, Nickel, Potassium, Silicon, Titanium and Zinc) in the atmospheric pollutants generated by an automotive industry located in Engenheiro Coelho city, São Paulo State, Brazil. The sampling and sample preparation procedures were based on methods established by Company of Technology of Environmental Sanitation (CETESB L9.234) and also by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA - Method 29). The analysis was performed at XRF Beamline (D09B-XRF) in the Synchrotron Light Source Laboratory (Campinas/SP). For zinc, iron, barium, calcium, potassium the values obtained were in the range of 30 mg/Nm³ and for other elements the concentrations were approximately 1 mg/Nm³. The analytical technique employed presented detection limits much smaller (1,000 times) than maximum permissive values established by Brazilian legislations (CONAMA 264/1999 and SEMA 041/2002) / Mestrado / Saneamento e Ambiente / Mestre em Engenharia Civil

Le rayonnement des marbriers wallons (1800-1920). / The growing reputation of Walloon marble-workers (1800-1920).

Petit, Joëlle 19 March 2014 (has links)
Mots-clés : marbrerie, techniques, expositions, archives, cheminée, dictionnaire, hommes clé / During the XIXth century, marble-working became increasingly mechanised and technical transfers took place in the various crafts, thanks to national industrial exhibitions and to international expositions. This thesis aims to demonstrate, by the examination of two registers of original records, hitherto unpublished, that the trade networks established in the XVIIIth century by a family of marble-workers from Rance, in the Belgian province of Hainault, continued into the XIXth century with specialisation in producing monumental marble chimney-pieces, thanks to the development of techniques and methods of transport. We also propose an outline of a prosopographic dictionary of marble-workers, derived from reports of national and universal expositions, and of the key figures who influenced the development of marble-working techniques in the XIXth century.Key-words : marble-working, techniques, expositions, records, chimney-piece, dictionary, key figures.

Steel Sheet Applications and Integrated Heat Management

Ahmadi Moghadam, Parham January 2016 (has links)
Increasing energy use has caused many environmental problems including global warming. Energy use is growing rapidly in developing countries and surprisingly a remarkable portion of it is associated with consumed energy to keep the temperature comfortable inside the buildings. Therefore, identifying renewable technologies for cooling and heating is essential. This study introduced applications of steel sheets integrated into the buildings to save energy based on existing technologies. In addition, the proposed application was found to have a considerable chance of market success. Also, satisfying energy needs for space heating and cooling in a single room by using one of the selected applications in different Köppen climate classes was investigated to estimate which climates have a proper potential for benefiting from the application. This study included three independent parts and the results related to each part have been used in the next part. The first part recognizes six different technologies through literature review including Cool Roof, Solar Chimney, Steel Cladding of Building, Night Radiative Cooling, Elastomer Metal Absorber, and Solar Distillation. The second part evaluated the application of different technologies by gathering the experts’ ideas via performing a Delphi method. The results showed that the Solar Chimney has a proper chance for the market. The third part simulated both a solar chimney and a solar chimney with evaporation which were connected to a single well insulated room with a considerable thermal mass. The combination was simulated as a system to estimate the possibility of satisfying cooling needs and heating needs in different climate classes. A Trombe-wall was selected as a sample design for the Solar Chimney and was simulated in different climates. The results implied that the solar chimney had the capability of reducing the cooling needs more than 25% in all of the studied locations and 100% in some locations with dry or temperate climate such as Mashhad, Madrid, and Istanbul. It was also observed that the heating needs were satisfied more than 50% in all of the studied locations, even for the continental climate such as Stockholm and 100% in most locations with a dry climate. Therefore, the Solar Chimney reduces energy use, saves environment resources, and it is a cost effective application. Furthermore, it saves the equipment costs in many locations. All the results mentioned above make the solar chimney a very practical and attractive tool for a wide range of climates.

Fluri, Thomas Peter 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD (Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The power conversion unit of a large solar chimney power plant converts the fluid power, first into mechanical power, and then into electrical power. In this dissertation a tool is developed to determine the layout and the number of turbines of the solar chimney power conversion unit providing the lowest cost of electricity. First, the history of the solar chimney concept and the related fields of research are presented. Potential features and configurations of the power conversion unit are introduced, and it is shown how the solar chimney power conversion unit compares to those of other applications. An outline of the dissertation is given, and its potential impact is discussed. An analytical turbine model is developed. Several modelling approaches and the performance of single rotor and counter rotating turbine layouts are compared. Preliminary turbine designs are investigated, experimentally and numerically. The main aim of the experimental investigation is to verify the applicability of the loss model used in the analytical turbine model. The aim of the numerical investigation is to evaluate a commercial software package as a tool in context with solar chimney turbines. For each component of the power conversion unit an analytical performance model is introduced. Using these models, the single vertical axis, multiple vertical axis and multiple horizontal axis turbine configurations are compared from an efficiency and energy yield point of view, and the impact of the various losses on the overall performance is highlighted. A detailed cost model for the power conversion unit is also presented. To optimize for cost of electricity this cost model is then linked to the performance models, and the resulting optimization scheme is applied to several plant configurations. It is shown that for a large solar chimney power plant the power conversion unit providing minimal cost of electricity consists of multiple horizontal axis turbines using a single rotor layout including inlet guide vanes. / Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies

Active Solar Chimney (ASC) : numerical and experimental study of energy storage and evaporative cooling / Cheminée Solaire Active : étude numérique et expérimentale du stockage énergétique et du refroidissement par évaporation

Frutos Dordelly, José Carlos 05 November 2018 (has links)
The current global warming conditions have led nations across the world to commit into energetic sustainability and greenhouse gas emission reduction. Being the third greatest energetic consumer, the building represents a major key towards energy efficiency and global temperature stabilization. Several solutions exist for the accomplishment of these goals, and the works presented throughout this dissertation concerns a particular external building solar-driven component known as solar chimney. This PhD thesis focuses on the experimental and numerical analysis of energy storage devices, in the form of Phase Changing Materials (PCMs), for the optimisation of the performance of this solar technology. The aim of this study is to characterize the impact of Rubitherm RT44 PCM panels on a solar chimney under laboratory and in-situ conditions to carry out a comparison against the classic version. Additionally, a numerical model was developed and tested in the interest of obtaining a numerical tool capable of representing the behaviour of a solar chimney. Finally a bi-objective optimization of the PCM integrated solar chimney numerical model was carried out in order to determine some of the optimal parameters of this type of technology to obtain the highest exiting air flow, all while maintaining a high enough temperature across the chimney to reach the fusion range of the PCMs.

Study And Design Of Two-Thirds Power Weir

Reddy, K Ranga 12 1900 (has links)
This thesis is devoted to the study and designs of two important proportional weirs having the discharge-head characteristics of Q α H 2/3 In the first design a geometrically simple weir in the form of a rectangular weir over a inverted V-notch (Chimney weir) is presented. This weir gives for all flows above a threshold depth a discharge proportional to H 2/3 within a maximum percentage error of ±1.5, (measured above a reference plane) within certain limits of head. Second design is concerned with the self-basing weir in which a portion of the weir above the crest acts as a base. This design is achieved by using the complementary weir profile of a Quadratic weir above the parabolic base which has the significant property of fast convergence. This weir gives discharge for all flows above the threshold depth, proportional to (head)2/3 measured above a reference plane, with increasing accuracy as head increases. Experiments with these two weirs confirm the theory by giving a constant average Coefficient of Discharge (Cd) of 0.62. The importance of these weirs as a sensitive discharge measuring device in field and laboratory is highlighted.
