The influence of social media on chinese college students' social activism

Gu, Xiaoting 01 January 2012 (has links)
Guided by Uses and Gratifications Theory, this study investigated the relationship between Chinese college students' use of social media and their social activism. Data collected from a goup-administered survey of 309 undergraduate students at a large university in eastern China was used to answer four research questions. The results indicated that Chinese college students who used social media for information seeking were likely to participate in individual social activism. Besides, students who used social media for self-status seeking and information seeking were likely to participate in collective social activism. No significant correlation between entertainment motivation and social activism were found. Neither can socializing motivation predict Chinese college students' social activism. In addition, gender had an impact on individual social activism and frequency of social media use could affect both individual and collective social activism.

Intercultural and academic transitions: A study of the gap between Chinese secondary schools and western universities

Mills, Bonnie K. 01 January 2013 (has links)
China is the top sending country of international students to Western universities. Chinese students can benefit a country's economy and aid in internationalizing campuses, providing opportunities for students to develop global competencies. However, as the number of Chinese students is increasing, so is the awareness of their difficulties in acculturating to the Western system of higher education. The literature attributes some of these difficulties to cultural, academic, and social factors. Filling a gap in the research, this cross-level study compares the preparation programs of four different types of secondary institutions. Results of surveys and interviews were correlated between faculty and alumni evaluating satisfaction and effectiveness of university preparation. The students generally were satisfied with their preparation training as compared to the faculty at the secondary schools. Results of this study will help bridge the gap of eradicating the difficulties Chinese students face in the Western higher education system.

A study of factors affecting educational aspiration for selected students in China

Zhao, Qian (Joy) 01 January 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Higher education is considered significant in economic development of a country. In light of Bronfenbrenner's bio-ecological system model, this study is designed to study the factors that might influence higher education aspiration for the students living in Bazhou Prefecture, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) of China. The results of this study find that the senior high school students living in this region have extraordinarily high aspiration, even when taking into account their Confucian culture. Not only do 95% of the participants aspire to college education after high school, but also 62% of them plan to attend graduate schools in addition to college education. The majority of the participants consider it important to obtain a foreign graduate degree from universities in America or Canada. The results report parents' expectations are the predominant influences on education aspiration along with factors such as parental education level, age, GPA, and family financial support. It is also notable that influential factors in previous studies like SES, peer advice, relatives, school advice, are not supported by the results from this study. Factors like favorite subject, least-liked subject, living location, and location of the available college are explored in this study for the first time in relation to education aspiration, and are found to not be important. The findings of this study add knowledge to understanding higher education aspiration in the context of China. The researcher highly recommends that China continue to expand its higher education access, especially in poorer or remote areas, to balance government control and market force, and to extend counseling to high schools. It implicates that US higher education institutions should take an active part in the process of China's higher education development for mutual benefit.

Особенности обучения английскому языку студентов направления «Лингвистика» из КНР : магистерская диссертация / The Peculiarities Of Teaching Chinese Students English In Linguistic Department

Попова, А. И., Popova, A. I. January 2019 (has links)
The relevance of the study of the peculiarities of teaching Chinese students English in Russia, in particular in UrFU, is determined by the fact that the number of students from China is increasing annually. It turned out that Chinese students have a low level of English language proficiency and a problem of "language barrier". In this regard, the problem of quality training of foreign citizens in Russian universities is attracting more and more attention. This thesis contains an overview of the national-psychological, ethno-cultural and linguistic features of Chinese students, as well as peculiarities and differences in the educational systems of China and Russia, which involve some specificity in determining the content and technology in teaching. The approaches, principles and methods of teaching English, contributing to the effective formation of foreign language abilities of Chinese culture are also described. It also gives practical recommendations for teaching English language to Chinese students. The difficulties of adaptation to the educational system of Russia, the attitude of Chinese students to the process of learning English, as well as related academic problems in the study of the language require the teacher to organize a smooth transition from one educational system to another, while maintaining student’s motivation for learning, diligence, responsibility and importance of education. The obvious difference in educational systems, approaches and teaching methods determines the specifics of working with Chinese students. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that selected relevant for the study pedagogical approaches (activity-oriented, personality-oriented and communicative-ethnographic), as well as didactic (connection between the theory and practice of teaching, the principle of visibility of teaching foreign languages) and methodic principles of teaching English (the principle of modeling the situation of intercultural communication, the principle of rational use of the second foreign language (Russian), etc.) contribute to the effective formation of communicative skills of students from China. The practical significance of the study is a set of exercises for classroom work of foreign students on the formation of foreign language communicative competence. The developed set of exercises can be taken as a basis for the creation of teaching AIDS. In addition, the practical significance of the study is associated with the possibility of applying its results in the process of teaching English as a foreign language to students from China.

Sojourner adjustment: the experience of wives of mainland Chinese graduate students

Lo, Waiping Alice 23 September 2008 (has links)
Thousands of Chinese women from the People's Republic of China (PRC, or commonly known as Mainland China) come to the united states hoping to be re-united with their husbands and to support them in finishing their education. They all face similar kinds of experiences on arrival. They mayor may not have had some contact with Western culture, but most of them grew up in a culture different from the West. Willingly or not, they left their families, friends, and careers to take up this odyssey in a completely strange land. The joy of reuniting with their husbands is often clouded by uncertainties and a sense of loss. In the area of counseling and student personnel services, there is little research on the adjustment experiences of these sojourner Mainland Chinese women who accompany their spouses to the united states. As a result, the higher education community is often taken by surprise when families or couples experience such situations as marital discord and domestic violence where remedial actions are expected of them. They also do not know how to plan effective programs for spouses of Mainland Chinese students. The purpose of this study was to examine the sojourner adjustment experiences of Mainland Chinese women in the United states from their own perspective, and to explore the factors that affect their adjustment. This study identified adjustment to new settings, documented processes of adjustment, and examined the means used processes of to deal with adjustment. A longitudinal design was used with both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. In-depth individual interviews, phone interviews, questionnaires, daily activity record forms, and participant observations were used to collect data over a 9 month period. Eleven women were studied in depth. The study showed that most Mainland Chinese women do not choose to come here in the first place. After their arrival, they have great language difficulties which limit their daily activities and hinder their choice of career and/or further education. As a result, they experience an identity crisis. Language ability, attitude toward coming to the united states, and life events are the most significant factors that affect their adjustment to life in the united states. There is a lack of coordination in the programs offered by the university and the community in which this study was conducted. Most of these programs do not meet the needs of these Chinese women. Due to cultural differences and the lack of knowledge of Western professional counseling, they do not turn to professional counselors for help. Instead, they mainly rely, upon other Chinese students in the community. If major problems occur, they turn to the administrative staff or faculty of the university, counterparts of their work unit leaders in China. A systems approach aiming at different facets of their problems in various levels seems to be the key in helping these Chinese women. / Ed. D.
