Participatory communication for a culture of peace in a post-conflict context

Sjödin, Hanna January 2020 (has links)
This study aims at researching how a sustainable culture of peace can be built through civic engagement in the Abkhaz-Georgian post-conflict context. It does so by learning from locally based NGOs, working for a culture of peace in areas affected by the Abkhaz-Georgian armed conflict which occurred 1993 to 1994. The studied NGOs work for different components within a Culture of Peace such as; women’s rights, peace building, social and economic development, democratic participation and human rights. In order to answer the research question following sub questions are answered: •What can we learn from the experiences of the studied organizations’ participatory communication for social change? •How has the culture of communication in the Abkhaz-Georgian post conflict context been affecting the participatory communication for social change for the different organizations? The method to collect data to the research has been through a field study in Abkhazia and outside its border on the Georgian side, in the city Zugdidi which is the closest city to the Abkhazian border. Participatory observations and interviews with representatives from the different organizations working for a culture of peace were conducted during two and a half months. The theoretical framework used for the study consists of three theories. The first is the theory of “Culture of Peace”, used to analyze how the studied NGOs are working for a culture of peace. The second is the theory “participatory communication for social change” which is used to analyze the work of the studied organizations in order to know how they work for sustainable civic engagement. Lastly, the theory used to look at how the Abkhaz-Georgian post-conflict context is affecting the communication, is the theory “culture of communication”. The findings of the research present solutions of how to practice participatory communication to build a culture of peace in a post-conflict context. However, the research also discovers how certain public values and views in a post-conflict context can hinder effective work through participatory communication as well as ways of overcoming these challenges.

You don’t do it for your own good, but to help : The civic engagements meaning and value according to young students in upper secondary school

Erkki, Isabella January 2023 (has links)
One of the goals stated in the curriculum for the Swedish upper secondary school is to foster students into becoming active citizens. At the same time, young peoples' possibilities to engage in contemporary society, is being debated. Young peoples' possibilities to make their voices heard, are according to research restricted. At the same time, research has not focused frequetly or primarly on students' view on civic engagement. Therefore, this study aims to investigate how young people defines and values civic engagement. This study has been conducted through semi-structured foucs group interviews with students in upper secondary school. Each participant was at the time of the interviews currently taking a course in social studies. Photo-elicitation has been used to create the discussion material that the interview was based on. The results of the present study indicate that the participants view civic engagement as primarly a voluntary, positive, and non-selfish activity. Moreover, they tend to value different kind of civic engagement as good or bad, depending on the form and the purpose of the activity. This study makes clear that young people in some ways understand civic engagement as the former research defines it, but they clearly show what types of engagement that are the most meaningful and important for them. According to this study's participants: children, students, and elderly are the most engaged citizens, while the adults don't have either time or energy to engage in society. The students describe the small and the physical forms of engagement as important, as well as the forms that encourage and informs other people. But they also want those people to engage to solve problems and not only talk about them.

Relationship Between Adolescent Behavior And Civic Engagement

Ernst, Michael 01 January 2005 (has links)
Citizenship - commitment to and participation in a political community - is the heart of constitutional democracy and a free society. Knowledge of the rights, responsibilities, and privileges are the electrical impulses that keep a steady beat. Without the participation of educated citizens, a democratic republic can not and does not function. This study analyzed the relationship between adolescent behavior and civic engagement. This task was accomplished by examining the amount of civic knowledge possessed by two groups within a population. The population examined, a high school in Flagler County, was composed of "at risk" students (those who had an Individualized Education Plan) and "regular" students (those that did not). The study uncovered the message that the amount of civic knowledge possessed by American youth was not as important as it was for them to be engaged in extracurricular activities. During the course of time, educators appear to have restricted their own ability to plan for and provide learning experiences that take in to consideration the physical characteristics; physical needs; patterns of growth and maturation; physiological changes; intellectual development; intellectual characteristics; learning preferences and styles; emotional development; personality development; and social development of each and every young adolescent attending school. When interesting, affordable activities are not made available, students become bored and get in to trouble during after school hours. Adolescent behaviors such as moral judgment and risk taking (or lack thereof) affect their decision to become civically involved.
