Estados primitivos em Creta: a administração neopalacial e as unidades sócio-políticas minóicas / Early states in Crete: neopalatial administration and the minoan polities

Paulo de Castro Marcondes Machado 25 June 2009 (has links)
The Minoan Civilization of the Bronze Age Crete was one of the few european civilizations that organized its society through a palatial system. The studies about the development of the Minoan States must analyse thoroughness the administrative palatial system and the changes that have occured on it during its six centuries of functioning. In this thesis we intend to analyse the complexity evolution of the Minoan polities through the analysis of its administrative configurations. The definition of administrative sites - through the function analysis of the architectural vestiges and of its archaeological discoveries - and the study of the hierarchic patterns among the sites, will be the main point of this research. The use of usefull methodologies for the analysis of early state formation and culture change, like systems theory and the concepts of peer polity interaction, will be the basis tools of this project. This research follows research developed in the mastership done in MAE/USP about the interaction between the early states of Crete and the Minoan ritual practices.

Giambattista Vico: sua proposta sobre o começo das civilizações e os comentários rabínicos sobre o dilúvio universal / Giambattista Vico: its proposal of the civilization beginning and the rabbinical arguments about the Universal Flood

Maria Angela Marini Esposito 30 March 2007 (has links)
This research aims to evidence the existing similarities between the proposal of Giambattista Vico about the beginning of the heathen civilization and rabbinic arguments about the episode of the Flood, in Genesis 6, considered a document conserved for Jewish oral and verbal traditions. We searched for the beddings of literature Jewish and Greek-Roman that allowed Vico to intuit a method for the verification of human beings sciences. Such method differs from the deductive method, acclaimed for the intellectuals of its time: the Italian philosopher believes that the religion is present in the base of the civilization process and places the language as the phenomenon that organizes the world. We showed - in the vichian postulates and the rabbinic arguments about the first chapters of Genesis - the comments that focus the intrinsic characteristics which induce the men to institute the three perpetual principles (religion, marriages and sepultures), identifiable in the formation of the nations everywhere; we pointed the three vichian phases (divine, heroic and human being) in the Jewish texts and we evidence, in the rabbinic view of world, the beddings used as base for the elaboration of the vichian concept about the favour; such concept is responsible for the division of the humanity between heathen and Hebrews allowing conjectures about the existence of giants in the time of the Flood

Abstract: This study investigates the inter-societal contacts between the Salesian Missions and the indigenous population of the northwest Amazon in the period between 1960 and 1980. Starting from socio-historical and cultural research, based on documentary sources, we analyse the strategies used by the Salesian missionaries for the catechization, the conversion to Catholicism and the civilization of the natives. In the group of actions carried out by the church-state-private capital alliance, the missionary work combined with the assimilationist ideology of the Brazilian State, founded on the supposed intellectual inferiority of the native population, from the viewpoint of the doctrine of national security, of the geo-political strategy of territorial integration, of social control and of the economic model of dependant capitalism for the economic development of the Amazon. The group of state policies, missionary actions and private capital enterprises caused serious consequences for the native societies, such as the sociocultural disorganization, the fragmentation of identities, the invasion of traditional territories and the negligence with the demarcation of Indian lands. This civilization process and religious conversion is marked by the conflict of interests between the agents involved, highlighting the resistance of the Indigenous Organizations in defence of and guaranteeing the rights of the autoctone population, against the state assimilationism, the industrial exploration of the subsoil resources of the natives' lands and the intolerance of the catholic missionaries and reforms. We discuss and also question the natives' appropriation of the western knowledge, values, customs and institutions and how this patrimony was re-signified and utilized for the (re)affirmation of the cultural identities and for the auto-determination of the indigenous movement in the Alto Rio Negro. Among the civilizing strategies (religious, sanitary, economic, educational) we highlight the school and the boarder when seeking to analyse the Salesian education and the devices of power and of knowledge put in practice in institutional daily life with the objective of assimilating the indigenous populations into Catholicism and the national State.

In way to the transformations cultural and politics, the decurrent structural change them new possibilities for conceiving the cultural production and the activity politics, the 1960¿s represents a particular moment in the intercrossingof these two perspectives. And as key element of these concerns, the Revista Civilização Brasileira (1965-1968) appears us as an important moment in the affirmation of this space, keeping a series of quarrels concerning literature, the theater, the cinema, the plastic arts and music. In this way, the Revista Civilização Brasileira represents with its group of collaborators ¿ between them, social scientists, writers, journalists, scientists and musicians ¿ an important and historical representative space for the culture and the politics thought about that period. Životní styl mládeže středních škol na Teplicku / Healthy Lifestyle of Secondary Schools Youth in Teplice

Fürst, Roman January 2017 (has links)
The diploma thesis addresses the lifestyle of the high school students in Teplice; in particular their healthy lifestyle. In the theoretical part, basic information about a healthy lifestyle is summarized. At the same time, the lifestyle information is introduced, which relates to healthy diet, eating habits, fluid intake, motion activity and sleep. Furthermore, the determinants harmful to human health are introduced in this part; i.e. alcoholic beverages overconsumption, smoking or excessive mental strain. The practical part is aimed at mapping the major factors of the high school youth's lifestyle in Teplice and to ascertain whether the taught subject focused on health and healthy lifestyle influences the students and their attitude to a healthier lifestyle. I evaluated the questionnaire survey by means of self-made evaluation methods based on the healthy lifestyle principles. The reason was that none of the discovered methods for poll evaluation corresponded with my needs. The results are clearly arranged in the attached tables and demonstrated in the charts. The health based subject taught at school proved to have only a minor impact on the healthy lifestyle of high school students. The appendix includes the sample of the evaluation method created by myself, the questionnaire applied for the...

An overview of the impact of Western perceptions on the Muslim Middle East

Voges, Nina 28 August 2012 (has links)
M.A. / The history of Islam in modern times is essentially the history of the Western impact on the Muslim society. The Islamic religion assumed a position as the ultimate and final revelation versus Christianity and Judaism. Islam also developed its own unique civilisation within the religious parameters that were different from those in the West. With territorial expansion the two worlds had an impact on each other. Although contact had taken place before, the Crusades were the first major impact of the West on the Islamic world. With the decline of the OttomarrEmpire and the subsequent colonial expansion into the Islamic world, the adoption of Western views and influences were increasingly seen as being progressive, while those of the Islamic world represented stagnation. Together with colonisation came the mind set of the Western world towards the Islamic world that influenced perceptions, as well as policies. With modernisation came disillusionment that resulted in the questioning of what the West had to offer. This resulted in various actions and reactions against the West, but the Islamic world still experienced that it was behind the contemporary world. Its retrogression has been blamed on the failure of the Muslim society to transform the theoretical civilisation framework of Islam into an operational form, while the West has kept and enhanced its parameters. The problematic issues taking the two civilisations into the twenty-first century are what adjustments are to be made to ensure survival. The question is in what manner Islam can be modernised or whether modernity must be Islamised and what adjustments are going to be forthcoming from the Arab world. The choice is between submitting to one of the contending versions of modern civilisation that are offered to them, merging their own culture and identity in a larger and dominating whole, or following those who urge them to turn their backs upon the West. In this manner they may succeed in renewing their society from within, meeting the West on terms of equirco-operation.

The worldview of women in demotic historic, akritic and epic poetry of the late Byzantine period (9th century to 1453)

Deligatos, Virginia A. 31 March 2010 (has links)
M.A. / A study is conducted into the roles of women living in the late Byzantine period between the 6th Century to 1453, using demotic or ‘popular’ poetry which can be quite significant in shedding some light into Byzantine history and society. An in depth analysis of these songs is carried out and compared to valid historical texts in order to create a proper account on history. Some questions that will be examined are as follows: How did women fit into society? What was their expected role? Did they ever go beyond their conventional role? Were they treated differently at different stages or circumstances in their life? Do the clues that are found in these songs correspond to the previously written historical texts that were predominantly written by men? It is no secret that, women portrayed in historical texts which refer to that period, were subjugated to the men in their lives and had very different roles to their partners, fathers, or brothers. Using demotic poetry, one is able to understand the voice of common folk and their worldview, thereby collecting accounts of the society’s ideas and ideals at grassroots level. A collection of about 20 songs has been gathered for this study and each song has been analysed in detail alone and in its contexts. It is tremendously interesting to discover how important women were in their society and how they often seem to have influenced men’s behaviour indirectly.

Perspectives on counselling and the counsellor in the Korean culture : a narrative approach

Burger, Dennis Frederick 29 March 2007 (has links)
I studied perspectives on counselling and the counsellor in Korean culture. For this research I made use of a Narrative pastoral counselling approach that was situated in a Postmodern paradigm. As this research method concentrates on the life stories told by the life-story-tellers or co- researchers, I chose a few focus groups consisting of Koreans of different ages and both genders to help me to correct and understand my findings. I also used a questionnaire because language and communication is and was a big problem in Korea (I cannot speak Korean, and most Korean people cannot speak English). The findings were used as discussion topics in the focus groups and also in the interviews I had with several Korean individuals. In this study I dealt with many of the interesting and new things I learnt in Korea and from the Korean people (my story). Secondly, I shared the results from the questionnaires and also the feedback from the focus groups and interviews concerning these results (the Action story). Thirdly, I also tried to share a very in-depth picture of the Korean people’s history, customs, language, psychology, present-day Korea and Korean religions (their story or background story). In the background story, I used their stories, thus, I have made use of different story tellers’ stories and have used these voices as is. In listening to all of these life stories from Korean people, I have come to a better understanding of how Korean people deal with their problems. Coming from a paradigm where I tell my story with a Western culture’s tune, I have also came to see that even though I have come to a better understanding of how Korean people deal with their problems, it was still impossible for me to come to a true understanding of their approach. My biggest discovery was that one has to realize that each culture, even each individual, has a unique story. To come to a better understanding of this story, I have to have empathy and also to allow myself to be pulled over the threshold into the other person’s life. Even so, I also have to realize that my listening will still be obscured by the “noise” of my own self. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Practical Theology / Unrestricted
