The roles of the Scots and Scotch-Irishmen in the southern campaigns in the War of American Independence, 1780-1783

Moss, Bobby G. January 1979 (has links)
The roles played by the Southern Scots and Scotch-Irish in the War of American Independence have been generally neglected by American and European historians. If any reference at all is made to persons of Scottish heritage, normally only high-ranking officers or government figures are mentioned. This study identifies men of Scottish origin on every level of life and illuminates their roles in the War. In 1775 and 1776, the Scots and Scotch-Irish in the Southern colonies were not uniform in their political, social, and religious ideologies, nor were they totally of one mind in their posture toward the growing demands for independence in the American colonies. Several factors--community relationships, family ties, economic interests, and religious convictions--influenced each individual in making his decision to support the Royal government or to join the Rebels. When the British invaded the South in 1780, the Rebels and the Loyalists rekindled the internecine war which had begun in 1775. The British victory at Charles Town encouraged the Loyalists to repay the Rebels for real and imagined injuries and insults. As a result, civil strife became widespread throughout the Carolines and Georgia. Although the populace was upset over the internal struggle, it was the introduction of terror tactics by British and Loyalist officers that caused the greatest alarm among the Up-Countrymen, who were chiefly Scottish and Scotch-Irish Presbyterians. These acts of unrestrained warfare caused numerous uncommitted Up-Countrymen to join the ranks of the Rebels. Unfortunately for Cornwallis, this mistake in tactics by his subordinates forced him to fight several long and costly campaigns. In order to disperse the Rebels, the British and their allies marched into the strongholds of the South Carolina Scotch-Irish Presbyterians. This development greatly alarmed the North Carolinians. The resulting uprising of the North Carolina Scotch-Irish masses on the one hand and the subsequent military engagements in South Carolina on the other postponed Cornwallis's invasion of North Carolina. Meanwhile, as Cornwallis attempted to regroup his army and to formulate a new strategy to meet the situation, the predominantly Scottish and Scotch-Irish Rebel forces won major victories at Kings Mountain and Cowpens. Once it was apparent that militia units could defeat British regular units, many Southerners, some of whom had remained uncommitted and some of whom renewed their resistance, entered the daily growing ranks of the Rebels. At the same time, the Loyalists became reluctant to further ally themselves with the British army. These unexpected developments doomed to failure Cornwallis's plan to subjugate the Carolinas. Instead, the chain of events begun at Kings Mountain and Cowpens ended with Cornwallis's surrender at Yorktown. This study, based primarily on the Whigs' personal accounts of military involvement recorded in the Federal pension claims, in memoirs and recollections of the soldiers on both sides, and in the audited accounts of the Loyalists, demonstrates that from the very beginning of the Revolution to its end Scots and Scotch-Irishmen on all levels played major and decisive roles in the outcome of the Southern campaigns in the War of American Independence.

In the second half of the 19th century Brazil faced the substitution of the slave manual job for the free one and at the some time it aimed be transformed into a civilized nation into the European standard. It is in this aspect that this research ains to get to understand the contribution of the itinerant missions of the capuchins in the cruzade for civilization in Sergipe state between 1874-1901. For that to happen, we used as a leading wire the performace of the missionary friar João Evangelista Giuliani de Monte Marciano from his memories notebook. We realized these missions let several contributions. They helped to make the authorities plans as well as the landlords real as they convoke the population to labour. The ideal of work as a salvation instrument did not get only in the sermon. The missionaries led Sergipe people to build important comunitary buildings helping the state to supply the lack of roads, bridges, reservoirs, graveyards and hospitals. They transmited the habits of the Catholicism to a shy population of parish priests the mission was also a celebration to the people that besides the sacrament practice enjoyed the religious event to neet relatives and friends and also to get new social nets which were very useful to business. However we noticed that the appropriation of the mensage by the population wasn‟t exactly the way the civilian and religious authorities wished but they were influenced by their own view of the world. In this research it was used beyond the standard sources of the capuchins order the reports by the Presidents of the Provinces and the descriptions of the memoirists. / Salvador

As Bacantes de Eurípides: um olhar mítico-social de barbárie e civilização / Euripides' Bacchae: a mythic-social look of barbarism and civilization

Tatiana Bernacci Sanchez 27 March 2012 (has links)
Tal indissociabilidade consiste na coexistência de elementos de barbárie e de civilização tanto em Dioniso quanto em Apolo, tomados como parâmetros arquetípicos dentro de uma sociedade / Euripides Greek tragedy Bacchae, highly praised for its relevance not only literary and theatrical, but specifically historical and political is analyzed throughout this thesis with a mythic-social idiosyncrasy, by perceiving the inter-established dialogs between the aspect of the poet's own cultural mythic past and his living epoch. Thus, presented is a research about Greeks tragedy historical moment, its intrinsic political value and theoretical discussions upon its characteristics, origins, its three most important play writers and its reception, as well as a specific examination over Euripides and his legacy. In the selected work of art we have mainly observed the relationship between the characters of Dionysos and Pentheus, as debate gauges around what is considered to be civilized, wild or barbaric. In this regard, we uphold, through the position of culture traditionally occupied by Apolo, in traditional as well opposition to Dionysos, different considerations about civilized, wild and barbaric, as well as the indissoluble connection between barbarism and civilization, concepts that can be delimited according to ruling political values. Such inseparable connection consists in the coexistence of barbaric and civilized elements, both in Dionysos as in Apolo, taken after archetypal parameters within a society

The approach to the myths of modernity is a very comprehensive theme in Literary Studies. Fausto, Don Juan and Don Quixote are just a few examples of characters who become literature's representations of modern individuality. Over the centuries, a lot of variations of these myths illustrated the works of several writers, one of the reasons that enabled the spread of these figures. So we find in French literature, specifically the work of Honoré de Balzac, issues related not only to social but also to the individual, the man's nature. This way, the character Don Juan Belvidero, the story L'Elixir de longue vie, becomes one of the most satanic variations of the myth of Don Juan, since the selfish and ambitious caracter's behavior motivate his fall . Valentin Raphaël, protagonist of La peau de chagrin, can be then the representation of Fausto, who allied with Mephistopheles in exchange for power. However, Raphael is just a guy who haven't anything in life and gets the chance to own everything he ever desired, using a magic talisman, and the only disadvantage is to give his life in exchanged. We will analyze these two narratives to verify the construction of these characters, both founded in the myth of Fausto and Don Juan and for this it's necessary to rescue some variations of these figures in literary history to this work. Discoursing about these modern themes in Balzac's work is important from the critical fortune developed by Ernest Curtius, Pierre Brunel and other researchers of the Balzac's liteture, to go deep in our work and to develop the themes related to religion, modernity and power relations. Later, wil be necessary to analyze the narratives by their spatial and narratological features, with the help of Michel Foucault and Gérard Genette, so we can also understand if the magical objects appereance in narratives are related to the introduction of modern myths. / Objective is to demonstrate in this paper that there is a process of inflection in the work of Habermas, who is full-starts with your Student und Politik, 1961 and, inescapably, with his Theorie des Kommunikativen work of 1981 this process of inflection, power-would observe the final demarcation of the break with the foundations of Habermas critical theory of society, thinkers present in the first generation of the Frankfurt School; and adherence to the principles and foundations of liberalism as a way to delineate and demarcate the process of building a social theory and a theory of social evolution, private and autonomous, put milestones in praise of capitalist society. Would treat the claim of a particular type of neo-contractualism overlooking the salvation of a project of modernity and rationality completely exhausted and by the bourgeois sociability and, therefore, could only substantiate the form and within the framework of cultural regression . In this process of inflection, a category arising from the first generation of theorists of the Frankfurt School had become central in social theory of Habermas, in that the design of state capitalism acquired centrality in its various and contradictory diagnoses of this time, such that if consubstanciaria as designing and late capitalism mediates the passage of the centrality of work category, even inscribed in the sphere logical and epistemological-epistemic, to the centrality of the category of politics. Such a radical paradigm shift began to progressively influence the new critical theory, inaugurated with the second generation of Habermas, that little or nothing had identified the first generation theorists of the Frankfurt School. Therefore, the diagnosis of this time, exposed in this work, out of the thirty years separates Student und Politik of Theorie des Kommunikativen, served primarily to hatch the egg of a serpent that would eventually support a discourse ethics, as well as...

This research shows a critical examination on the concept of happiness according to Freud, face up to Marcuse. In Freudian meaning, happiness refers, on one side, to the accomplishment of pleasure principle program, that is, return to the inanimate and, on the other side, to the deviation from the original purpose of that and rational domain. In Eros and Civilization, by having as interlocutors Freud and Marx, Marcuse speculates about the hypothesis of a non-repressive civilization. Happiness is defined as the real needs of all men in a context of freedom. From these conceptions, the criticism and particularities of Marcuse`s thought were analyzed aiming to show that, although the problem exposed from the point of view of an orthodox reading of Freud, the concept of happiness, in order to be understood and reveal its critical potential, requires an analysis which contemplates the insertion of the psychoanalysis in the field of dialectics undertaken by Marcuse

For the constants generalizations maked over all Plutarch's corpus, which was superficially described as basically a moral project, the aim of this work claim fortify the thought which the greek writer view the policy activity as essential in the man's life. Thus, paideia and philosophy mediated a ethics which conducting the ruler's actions and behavior, refining your nature, as well as your instinct and passions. The ruler which earned more education and philosophy will be conditions to guide the citizens' comunity with justice and prudence. This was kind of ruler which Plutarch judged as ideal: educated, virtuous and wise like a philosopher, such as Plato thinked, and the image which more approached of this model was Alexander the Great.

The objective of this research presentation is to analyze the vision of the indigenous element constructed by scholastic gatherings at the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute between 1838 and 1873. Starting from the hypothesis that historiographic discourse was produced in the space of knowledge that postulated a distinction between past and present regarding the indigenous people, based on the thesis that they were remnants of an ancient civilization that degenerated. That way, studying the presence of indigenous people in the Brazilian lands meant investigating a recoiled era in which could be found a civilizational precedent and, concomitantly, reflecting about the ways of incorporating the contemporary Indians into the new impulse of civilization that started with the consolidation of an independent Brazil.
