A practical-theological investigation of the nineteenth and twentieth century "faith theologies"

King, Paul Leslie 01 January 2002 (has links)
A. B. Simpson / Charles Spurgeon / Andrew Murray / Oswald Chambers / George Muller / Hudson Taylor / John MacMillan / A. W. Tozer / Kenneth Hagin / Kenneth Copeland / Frederick K. C. Price / E. M. Bounds / Amy Carmichael / Phoebe Palmer / This thesis is a study of nineteenth and twentieth century faith theology and praxis, seeking to determine a balanced, healthy faith that is both sound in theology and effective in practice. Part 1 presents a history and sources of Faith Teaching and Practices. It first looks historicalty at the roots of later faith teaching and practice by presenting a sampling of teachings on faith from early church fathers, reformers, mystics, and Pietists. These form the foundation for the movements of faith in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries--the classic faith teaching, followed by the modern faith movement and leaders. Part 2 deals with the foundational issues of faith teaching and practice: the relationship of faith to the supernatural, the concept of the inheritance of the believer and the practice of claiming the promises of God, the nature of faith, and the authority of the believer and its inferences for faith praxis. Part 3 investigates seven major theological issues of faith teaching and practice: faith as a law and force, the object and source of faith, the relationship of faith and the will of God, distinguishing between a logos and a rhema word of God, the concepts of revelation and sense knowledge, the doctrine of healing in the atonement, the question of evidence of the baptism in lhe Holy Spirit. Part 4 examines major practical issues of faith teaching and practice about which controversy swirls: positive mental attitude and positive confession; issues of discernment in acting upon impressions, voices, revelations, and "words from the Lord;" questions of failh regarding sickness and healing, death, doctors and medicine; the relationships between sickness, suffering, healing, and sanctification; and prosperity. Part 5 reflects upon these issues and comes to final conclusions regarding: the role of hermeneutics in determining failh theology and praxis, how to handle unanswered prayers and apparent failures of faith, the seeming paradox and tension between claiming one's inheritance and dying to self, a summary of practical conclusions for exercise of healthy faith, and final conclusions and recommendations on developing a sound theology and practice of faith for the twenty-fist century. / Practical Theology / D.Th. Developing a theory of psychopathological perfectionism within a cognitive behavioural framework

Baker, David January 2012 (has links)
Background: Psychological perfectionism, from a clinical perspective, started to be a topic of interest for cognitive behavioural clinicians at the beginning of the 1950s. Whilst many studies have identified perfectionism as a pivotal motivator in different conditions of neurosis, the exact nature of its interactions remains unclear. In the research community there is still a debate as to whether there is such a thing as good perfectionism, and there remains no consensual theory of psychopathological perfectionism. Aims: The aim of the study was to investigate why the nature of the phenomena remains a contentious issue, and to develop a robust theory of psychopathological perfectionism, within a cognitive behavioural framework, which will find general acceptance. From the literature review this appears to be the first qualitative study to develop such a theory. Method: Substantive grounded theory was developed within a framework of methodical hermeneutics which, it is argued, is capable of generating formative theory. 20 volunteers who came forward in response to advertisements became participants in semi-structured interviews using a post classic qualitative methodology, from which emerging data became the basis of categories leading to the development of the theory, and functions of the phenomena. Results and Conclusions: The study sets out reasons why there remains an impasse amongst researchers and clinicians about the condition of psychopathological perfectionism. A parsimonious theory of pathological perfectionism has been developed, the constructs of which are just necessary and sufficient to describe the condition. The developed theory makes a contribution to theories proposed prior to 1990 and to contemporary research. However as with all theories it is necessarily provisional, so that its usefulness is in need of further research and development. Psychopathological perfectionism has only two constructs, namely a demand to achieve perfectionism in at least one idiosyncratic sphere, which is in response to a core schema of conditional worth. A number of symptoms or functions of psychopathological perfectionism have also been identified, and there are suggestions as to how the condition develops and is maintained to the detriment of the sufferer. The study synthesizes over fifty years of theory and research into the phenomena. The developed theory and its symptoms or functions have important implications for clinical interventions, training, and for further psychological and psychosocial research. These implications are discussed.

Assessing Knowledge Management Values by Using Intellectual Capital to Measure Organizational Performance

Nguyen, Thuan L. 01 January 2016 (has links)
Measuring knowledge management performance was one of, if not the most challenging knowledge management activities. This study suggested using intellectual capital as a proxy for knowledge management performance in evaluating its impact on organizational performance. The Value Added Intellectual Coefficient model was employed to measure intellectual capital. Although being used widely in research, the model had its limitations. Also, for intellectual capital measurement, there was a lack of guidelines supported by empirical evidence or best practices. The present study aimed to test the classic and a modified version of this model, and based on the results, shed light on whether the classic version was good enough or the modified one should be highly recommended. The financial fundamental and market data of 425 randomly selected publicly listed firms were collected, and the structural equation modeling technique was employed to test the models. Chi-square difference test was performed to determine whether there was a statistically significant difference between these two models. The results of the tests indicated that the difference between them was insignificant. Therefore, it was concluded that the classic model is adequate, and it can be used effectively to measure intellectual capital. Adding two new efficiency elements – research and development efficiency and relational capital efficiency – in the model did not provide any significant benefit.

Sacrificial and Expressive Value Systems in the English Neo-Classic and Romantic Movements

Heflich, Debra L. 05 1900 (has links)
This rhetorical study applies Clare W. Graves' "Level of Existence" or value systems theory to the English Neo-Classic and Romantic Movements. Graves' framework, which focuses on sacrificial (Tribalistic, Absolutistic, and Sociocentric) systems and expressive (Egocentric, Achievist, and Individualistic) systems~was utilized in analyzing the politics, society, religion, philosophy, and literature of the two periods. The Neo-Classic Period was dominated by sacrificial systems, especially Absolutistic, while the Romantic Movement was dominated by expressive systems, especially Achievist. This thesis suggests that man's cultural development, like his psychological development, appears to evolve in a spiraling, pendular motion between sacrificial and expressive systems.

Dynamics of alkylidenes complexes supported on amorphous silica.

Halbert, Stéphanie 04 July 2013 (has links)
This work presents a theoretical study aimed at analyzing the origin of the differences in the dynamics of alkylidenes complexes, known as Schrock olefin metathesis catalysts, supported on amorphous silica. The difference between the experimental chemical shift anisotropies (CSA) obtained from solid state NMR measurements and the values computed for the most stable configurations have been used in previous work to suggest different dynamical behaviors for the supported complexes. Some of the complexes were suggested to have limited mobilities while others were suggested to be mobiles. In the first group, one finds Mo complexes, and in the second, W, Re and Ta complexes. In this thesis, a methodology was established to compute the CSA and to obtain information on the dynamics that average the CSA over time. In the first part of this work, molecular species were considered and the non covalent interactions between the surface and the grafted complexes were studied with various DFT levels of calculations and various molecular models. This molecular modeling being inappropriate, a better representation of the surface of amorphous silica was carried out with classical molecular dynamic methods. The nature of the surface was analyzed and compared with available experimental information. In a following step, the dynamic behavior of these complexes was determined using anab initio molecular dynamics (QM/MM) approach in which the metal fragments are treated at the quantum level and the support represented in a classical manner. These molecular dynamics studies yield time averaged CSA that are reasonably close to the experimental values and confirm in particular the partition into immobile (Mo) and mobile (W, Re, Ta) complexes. A detailed analysis of the results leads to a better understanding of the nature of the dynamics. Remarkably, motions relative to the silica surface and vibrations influencing the coordination sphere of the metal involving in particular agostic interactions both contribute to average the CSA.

“Frankenstein Complex” in the Realm of Digital Humanities : Data Mining Classic Horror Cinema via Media History Digital Library (MHDL)

Jiang, Tianyu January 2019 (has links)
This thesis addresses the complexity of digitalization and humanities research practices, with a specific focus on digital archives and film history research. I propose the term “Frankenstein Complex” to highlight and contextualize the epistemological collision and empirical challenges humanities scholars encounter when utilizing digital resources with digital methods. A particular aim of this thesis is to scrutinize digital archiving practices when using the Media History Digital Library (MHDL) as a case for a themed meta-inquiry on the preservation of and access to classic horror cinema in this particular digital venue. The project found conventional research methods, such as the close reading of classical cinema history, to be limiting. Instead, the project tried out a distant reading technique throughout the meta-inquiry to better interrogate with the massive volume of data generated by MHDL. Besides a general reassessment of debates in the digital humanities and themes relating to horror film culture, this thesis strives for a reflection on classic horror spectatorship through the lens of sexual identity, inspired by Sara Ahmed’s perspective on queer phenomenology. This original reading of horror history is facilitated by an empirical study of the digital corpus at hand, which in turn gives insights into the entangled relation between subjective identities and the appointed research contexts.

There has been an attempt to keep the legitimacy of the source of the text in the translations into the Portuguese language, made by the author of the thesis. Thematic excerpts of dào, yīnyángqì, wǔxíng of the The Yellow Emperor s Inner Classic have been taken and contrasted to the European versions by means of comparisons that have been given systematized commentaries. Because both textualities are products of the fecundity and intelligibility of two distinct cultures, ancient Chinese and current European cultures, there is reference to the study of the problems of the cultural differences with the dimensions that have implications in the Philosophical, Linguistic and aesthetics scopes. A conceptual elaboration has been performed in order to explain the cultural phenomena involved in the transformation and in the translocation of the hypotext into the hypertext. The cultural differences have been made concrete based on Montgomery s cultural diffusion theories, Bastide s acculturation, globalization, Holton s hybridization, Lackner s hybridization and neo-figurism, Julien s cultural fecundity, Genette and Kristeva s intertextuality. The result of the research has led to the conclusion that the translation into Portuguese sought to preserve the authenticity of the original book s cultural and textual fecundity. The translocation of the original text from ancient China to current Europe has received modifications in cultural, philosophical, semantic-linguistic and aesthetic dimensions that took place in the translations of the ancient polysemic sinograms of taoism. These were decontextualized in the entrance of the received texts in another culture, the European culture, which is distinct from the former. It conduces to phrasing and recurrent significations, which are familiar in the receiving Western culture that overpowers the ancient Chinese, belonging to the ancestry of the Yellow Emperor / O presente trabalho científico investiga objeto composto do texto original de medicina chinesa antiga do taoismo, em chinês arcaico, o Clássico Interno do Imperador Amarelo e as traduções europeias em inglês, português, de Veith; em francês de Ung e Chamfrault.

“Staging Oneself” in Contemporary Adaptations of Classic Texts : a Turning Point in the Art of Mise en Scène?

Özer-Chulliat, Sibel 06 December 2016 (has links)
In recent years, some European directors are taking particularly bold initiatives in their adaptations of classic texts, cutting the text, changing the order of monologues and even injecting pieces of texts written by them or from other literary works. They do not hesitate to "stage themselves", that is to say, to treat primarily their own existential questions through the classic texts, thus releasing any pressure exerted on them by the authoritative textual interpretations or by the representations of these texts in the collective imagination, and taking the classic texts in a very personal "elsewhere". Their stagings exceed the fragmentation and disorder specific to postmodern theater and focus instead on telling a coherent story, centered on the intimate concerns of the director. This new type of staging draws on diverse influences from André Antoine to Heiner Müller through Stanislavski, Brecht and Artaud, and represents a new stage in the empowerment process of the art of staging at work since the nineteenth century. The corpus of this thesis includes four recent adaptations (conducted between 2008 and 2011) of classic texts: Thomas Ostermeier’s Hamlet, Nikolai Kolyada’s Hamlet, Olivier Py’s Romeo and Juliet, and Krzysztof Warlikowski’s A Streetcar (from A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams). It also includes a practical application in the form of an adaptation, Pygmalion - I Created A Woman (from Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw), directed by the author of the thesis in 2014 in the Turkish State Theatres and having tested the arguments and conclusions from previous analyzes.

No. of bitstreams: 1 3603.pdf: 602959 bytes, checksum: 3078931e73ff3d01b4122cbac2c7f0a0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-03-24 / Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos / In this work, the aim was to analyze in the classic and bayesian context, the GARMA model with three different continuous distributions: Gaussian, Inverse Gaussian and Gamma. We analyzed the performance and the goodness of fit of the three models, as well as the performance of the coverage percentile. In the classic analyze we consider the maximum likelihood estimator and by simulation study, we verified the consistency, the bias and de mean square error of the models. To the bayesian approach we proposed a non-informative prior distribution for the parameters of the model, resulting in a posterior distribution, which we found the bayesian estimatives for the parameters. This study still was not found in the literature. So, we can observe that the bayesian inference showed a good quality in the analysis of the serie, which can be comprove with the last section of this work. This, consist in the analyze of a real data set corresponding in the rate of tuberculosis cases in metropolitan area of Sao Paulo. The results show that, either the classical and bayesian approach, are good alternatives to describe the behavior of the real time serie.
