Valdir Carlos Pereira Filho 06 June 2012 (has links)
The settlement of international securities transactions raises important issues due to the differences among legal systems and the pluralism of participants involved. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze Brazilian legal rules in relation to relevant foreign rules by virtue of cross border transactions involving book entry securities, mainly purchase and sale of shares, in order to assess the situation of the Brazilian post trading system and structure compared to other countries. There will be a description and analysis of domestic settlement structure and cross border structures involved in transactions with foreign elements. Other relevant topics are the legal consequences arising from securities immobilization and dematerialization and from the existence of intermediaries between the final investor and the issuer, frequent in cross-border transactions. The whole thesis considers the existing trends and efforts to harmonize legal rules, and the conclusion is that Brazilian rules and structure for securities settlement are sound, appropriate and meet the best international standards, although minor adjustments may be implemented.

Optical strategies for diagnosis and treatment of melanoma / Estratégias ópticas para o diagnóstico e tratamento do melanoma

Layla Pires 18 September 2017 (has links)
Melanoma is a pigmented tumor that originates from the melanocytes; pigmented cells present throughout the body, including skin and iris. The cutaneous form is the most common type, and it represents about 5% of the skin tumors diagnosed in Brazil. Although it does not have a high incidence, it represents about 80% to 85% of all skin tumor deaths. The second most frequent type of melanoma is ocular. It represents 5% of all melanoma cases and is a potentially lethal disease, especially when it causes metastasis. The main therapeutic approach for melanomas, in general, is surgery, with resection of the cutaneous lesion or enucleation in the case of ocular melanoma. Other techniques such as adjuvant immunotherapy, palliative chemotherapy, and radiotherapy are also used. However, they have low efficacy and several side effects. Photodynamic therapy is a therapeutic modality based on the interaction of light at specific wavelength and photosensitizer, in the presence of molecular oxygen, leading the cell to death. As melanoma is a pigmented cancer, it usually does not respond well to photodynamic therapy due to the high absorption of light on the surface of the tumor, making volumetric eradication impossible. This project investigated optical strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of melanoma. For the diagnosis, it was evaluated the fluorescence lifetime technique to differentiate melanoma and normal skin. A sensitivity of 99.4%, specificity of 97.4% and accuracy of 98.4% were achieved using linear discrimination analysis. For the cutaneous melanoma treatment, PDT combined to optical clearing agents (OCAs) was investigated. Vascular and cell-target photosensitizers were evaluated combined or not to OCAs. OCA improved PDT response in all pigmented tumors treated, but the best results were achieved when a dual-photosensitizer treatment combined to OCA was performed. The treatment of conjunctival melanoma was conducted using 2-photon excitation photodynamic therapy. The advantage of this technique is the use of infrared light, in a wavelength that melanin has a low absorption, improving the light penetration into the tumor. The tumor histology shows that apoptosis was induced only at the treatment site, with no damage to the surrounding tissue. Additionally, a single TPE-PDT session could treat the entire tumor.

Ensaios em história do pensamento econômico / Essays on the history of economic thought

Alexandre Flávio Silva Andrada 14 September 2012 (has links)
This PhD thesis contains three independent (although complementary) essays on the History of Economic Thought, more specifically on Macroeconomics History. The first essay - A Brief History of the Disequilibrium Approach in Macroeconomics - is a revised and expanded version of paper presented at the XXXVIII Meeting of ANPEC. Our argumentation challenges Romer (1989) and Mankiw (2005) interpretations about that episode. We also disagree (at some level) with Backhouse & Boianovsky (2005) hypothesis about the so-called \"failure\" of Non-Market-Clearing Approach. The second essay - A Historical (and Rhetorical) Analysis of Robert E. Lucas Junior\'s Doctrinaire Speech - is still a work in progress. If the first essay we argue that part of the \"failure\" of Disequilibrium Approach was due to the emergence of a method perceived as superior by most economists (lucasian method), here we investigate the content of those articles where Lucas seeks to persuade its readers of the superiority of his method not from the scrutiny of the results obtained by a specific model in comparison to an alternative structure, but mainly through a polemicist rhetoric. Our intention is to check the validity of some of its historical and theoretical arguments, and make a scrutiny of rhetorical expedients used by the author. The third essay - Ancestry Thesis, Reinvention of a Tradition or Cumulative Progress? A Research on \"Macroeconomics\" before Keynes and some Speculation about the causes of General Theory\'s Success\" - is derived from the second paper. We start from the juxtaposition of historical hypotheses of two great authors about the state\'s theory of \"macroeconomic\" before Keynes, and the causes of the success of the General Theory. On one hand, Robert Lucas argues that Macroeconomics as developed by Keynes was a deviation in the tradition of equilibrist fluctuation analysis, whose success was a fortunate historical accident. On the other, Olivier Blanchard argues that what was before Keynes was a great diversity of methods and the absence of a hegemonic apparatus, and the success of Keynes was due exclusively to theoretical and methodological advances made in that work.

Chaloupka, Martin January 2008 (has links)
The main question this master thesis wants to answer is how much from their disposable income the Czech households save and how do they use their savings on the capital market. The thesis analyse situation and trend of the Czech households saving rate, changings of the marginal saving rate and checks in which financial instruments the Czech households alocate their savings. The thesis also focus on comparison of the Czech households data with the foreign households especially with the German, the Belgium and the Britain households as well as with Visegrád group households. Middle part of the thesis contains a forecast of future progress, which is compared with the similar forecast from year 2006, as well as the relationship of the government and the household's savings rate and possibilities and impacts of its regulation. The thesis is finished with the conclusion which summarize the most important results.

Imunoskóre ve 3D tkáních / Immunoscore in 3D tissue

Novák, Jaromír January 2020 (has links)
Solid tumors are complex structures comprising besides the cancer cells vasculature, extracellular matrix (ECM), soluble molecules and a plethora of various other cell types. These components form a so-called tumour microenvironment. From the numerous cell types that are part of tumor microenvironment, tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) play a major role in patient prognosis. Their presence is also of major importance with regard to new biological therapies based on immune checkpoint inhibitors. Crucial role of TILs is also reflected by the new approaches in cancer diagnostics namely by Immunoscore method (currently used in clinical settings). Immunoscore is based on localization and quantification of CD3+ and CD8+ TILs in thin histological sections of tumor tissue. The question remains to which extent the information obtained from 2D slices reflects the situation in tumor microenvironment considering its spatial heterogeneity. The development of new methodological approaches allowing evaluation of histological information in 3D is the key to answer this question. The theoretical part of this work first describes the heterogeneity of the tumor microenvironment and the role of immune cells within it. Then, the role of spatial heterogeneity and its possible influence on the histopathological...

“Ghost fields” in the Brazilian Pampa: inventory of abandoned eucalyptus plantations due to remaining tree stumps – resource gambling in a fragile biome with a history of massive land conversion

Potter Thomsen, Lars January 2024 (has links)
The main objective of this study was to make an inventory of abandoned eucalyptus plantations due to remaining tree stumps in the Brazilian Pampa biome, focusing on the two counties Pedras Altas and Candiota. In the study, the term “ghost fields” was used for abandoned eucalyptus plantations – land areas that were previously planted with eucalyptus and subsequently left unproductive for a number of years, no longer used for eucalyptus and not converted into e.g. pasture or soybean plantation. After three successive rotations, typically every 21 years, eucalyptus land needs to be processed mechanically to remove remaining stumps and allow new plantation, but stump clearing is costly, and in some cases, non-industrial owners leave the fields ghosted. More than half of the native vegetation, primarily grassland, in the Pampa has been converted into agriculture and forestry, and eucalyptus species are especially popular for plantation because of speedy growth and adaptability to harsh conditions. The loss of native grasslands to continuous short-rotation eucalyptus plantation for commercial use has resulted in soil degradation and biodiversity loss. The demand for productive land, and importance of conserving native vegetation, made it relevant to investigate the extent of ghost fields and the correlation between suppressed native vegetation and ghost fields and between suppressed native vegetation and eucalyptus plantation in general. The study showed that 11 percent (2,727 out of 24,746 hectares) of eucalyptus plantation in the focus area, comprising Pedras Altas and Candiota County, was ghosted for a period of 1-11 years between 2012-2023. Based on extrapolation of the findings in the focus area, 26,323 hectares (11 percent) out of the total 239,297 hectares of eucalyptus plantation in the Pampa may have been ghosted for a number of years between 2012-2023 because of remaining tree stumps. 500 (out of 980) hectares of ghost fields in Pedras Altas County and 543 (out of 1747) hectares of ghost fields in Candiota County were connected to areas with recent suppression of native vegetation (2004-2022). 8,240 (out of 13,200) hectares of eucalyptus plantation, including ghost fields, in Pedras Altas County and 4,829 (out of 11,546) hectares of eucalyptus plantation, including ghost fields, in Candiota County were connected to areas with recent suppression of native vegetation.

El bitar, Khalil 25 November 2016 (has links)
Adequate indicators of systemic risk would help them perform appropriate regulatory laws. The thesis proposes a dynamic model of banking system to calculate a systemic risk indicator of two components : The probability of a triggering event originated from external asset price decline, and the corresponding losses through the financial system. The thesis also proves the existence and uniqueness of two clearing equilibrium: the first deals with a model of différent debt seniorities, the second with a model of several illiquid asset following a proportional liquidation strategy.
