This thesis focuses on detection algorithms of radar targets, namely on group of techniques for removing of disturbing reflections from static objects - clutter and for suppression of distortion products caused by the phase noise of the transmitter and receiver. Methods for distortion suppression in received signal are designed for implementation in the developed active multistatic radar, which operates in the code division multiplex of several transmitters on single frequency. The aim of the doctoral thesis is to design, implement in tool for technical computing MATLAB and analyze the effectiveness and computational complexity of these techniques on simulated and real data.

Non-Destructive Evaluation of the Condition of Subsurface Drainage in Pavement Using Ground Penetrating RADAR (GPR)

<div>Pavement drainage systems are one of the key drivers of pavement function and longevity, and effective drain maintenance can significantly extend a pavement's service life. Maintenance of these drains, however, is often hampered by the challenge of locating the drains. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) typically offers a rapid and effective method to detect these underground targets. However, typical detection schema that rely upon the observation of the hyperbolic return from a GPR scan of a buried conduit still tend to miss many of the older drains beneath pavements as they may be partially or fully filled with sediment and/or may be fabricated from clay or other earthen materials, yielding a return signal that is convolved with significant background noise. </div><div><br></div><div>To manage this challenge, this work puts forward an improved background noise and clutter reduction method to enhance the target signals in what amounts to a constructed environment that tends to have more consistent subsurface properties than one might encounter in a general setting. Within this technique, two major algorithms are employed. Algorithm 1 is the core of this method, and plays the role of reducing background noise and clutter. Algorithm 2 is supplementary, and helps eliminate anomalous discontinuous returns generated by the equipment itself, which could otherwise lead to false detection indications in the output of Algorithm 1. Instead of traditional 2-D GPR images, the result of the proposed algorithms is a 1-D plot along the survey line, highlighting a set of “points of interest” that could indicate buried drain locations identified at any given GPR operating frequency. Subsurface exploration using two different operating frequencies, 900 MHz and 400 MHz herein, is then employed to further enhance detection confidence. Points of interest are ultimately coded to define the confidence of the detection. Comparing the final result of proposed algorithms with the original GPR images, the improved algorithm is demonstrated to provide significantly improved detection results, and could potentially be applied to similar problems in other contexts.</div><div><br></div><div>Besides the background reduction methods, a group of simulations performed using GPRMAX2D software are examined to explore the influence of road cross-section designs on sub-pavement drainage conduit GPR signatures, and evaluate the effectiveness of alternate GPR antennae configurations in locating these buried conduits in different ground conditions. Two different models were explored to simulate conduit detection. In addition, different pipe and soil conditions were modeled, such as pipe size, pipe material, soil moisture level, and soil type. Four different quantitative measurements are used to analyze GPR performance based on different key factors. The four measurements are 1) signal to background ratio (SBR) in dB; 2) signal to receiver noise ratio (SNR) in dB; 3) signal energy in Volts; and 4) average signal band power in Watts.</div><div><br></div><div>The water and clay content of subsurface soil can significantly influence the detection results obtained from ground penetrating radar (GPR). Due to the variation of the material properties underground, the center frequency of transmitted GPR signals shifts to a lower range as wave attenuation increases. Examination of wave propagation in the subsurface employing an attenuation filter based on a linear system model shows that received GPR signals will be shifted to lower frequencies than those originally transmitted. The amount of the shift is controlled by a wave attenuation factor, which is determined by the dielectric constant, electric conductivity, and magnetic susceptibility of the transmitted medium. This work introduces a receiver-transmitter-receiver dual-frequency configuration for GPR that employs two operational frequencies for a given test - one higher and one slightly lower - to take advantage of this phenomenon to improve subpavement drain detection results. In this configuration, the original signal is transmitted from the higher frequency transmitter. After traveling through underground materials, the signal is received by two receivers with different frequencies. One of the receivers has the same higher center frequency as the transmitter, and the other receiver has a lower center frequency. This configuration can be expressed as Rx(low-frequency)-Tx(high-frequency)-Rx(high-frequency) and was applied in both laboratory experiments and field tests. Results are analyzed in the frequency domain to evaluate and compare the properties of the signal obtained by both receivers. The laboratory experiment used the configuration of Rx(400MHz)-Tx(900MHz)-Rx(900MHz). The field tests, in addition to the configuration used in the lab tests, employed another configuration of Rx(270MHz)-Tx(400MHz)-Rx(400MHz) to obtain more information about this phenomenon. Both lab and field test results illustrate the frequency-shift phenomenon described by theoretical calculations. Based on the power spectrum for each signal, the lower frequency antenna typically received more energy (higher density values) at its peak frequency than the higher frequency antenna.</div>

Les salles de classe sont des milieux bruyants auditivement et visuellement. Au Québec, le bruit auditif dans les écoles s’avère une problématique qui règne depuis des dizaines d’années et qui reste encore d’actualité aujourd’hui. Le bruit environnant peut impacter négativement le bien-être et les apprentissages des élèves et le bien-être des enseignant·es. D’autant plus, souvent, la source principale de bruit dans les écoles provient de la parole, un comportement qui peut être contrôlé. Les élèves et surtout les enseignant·es surchargent leur système vocal pour pouvoir faire passer leur message oral à travers le bruit auditif, augmentant leur niveau d’effort vocal. Dans les salles de classe, les distractions visuelles telles que les affiches murales contribuent à l’encombrement visuel, qui peut être considéré comme du « bruit visuel ». Celui-ci peut également impacter négativement le bien-être des élèves et leurs apprentissages. Considérant la nature multimodale, ou audiovisuelle, de la parole, nous nous questionnions sur l’influence de l’encombrement visuel sur la parole. Ce mémoire de maîtrise, composé de deux études, avait pour but de 1) étudier la perception subjective des élèves québécois de leur salle de classe en relation avec des données acoustiques objectives, et 2) étudier l’effet de l’encombrement visuel sur l’effort vocal en termes de paramètres acoustiques (SPL, f0 et CPP) et de perception auto-rapportée de locutrices. Les deux études se sont basées sur des méthodes mixtes, intégrant des méthodes quantitatives similaires (ex. : collecte de mesures objectives acoustiques, analyses acoustiques) et des méthodes qualitatives similaires (ex. : collecte de données subjectives perceptuelles, analyse inductive de questions ouvertes). Les analyses quantitatives et qualitatives des deux études révèlent que bien que les résultats relatifs aux données objectives (mesures acoustiques) n’étaient pas statistiquement significatifs, les résultats relatifs aux données subjectives (perception) l’étaient. Par exemple, dans la première étude, les niveaux d’appréciation du son des élèves (EAE) n’étaient pas tous corrélés avec les SPLs, et dans la deuxième étude, le niveau d’encombrement visuel n’était pas corrélé aux paramètres acoustiques de SPL, f0 et CPP. Ces résultats mettent en lumière l’importance de considérer et d’inclure des données subjectives et perceptuelles dans les études portant sur les paysages sonores éducatifs et sur l’effort vocal, car ce sont des expériences vécues par des humains. / Classrooms are acoustically and visually noisy environments. In Quebec, auditory noise in schools is a problem that has existed for decades and is still relevant today. Background noise can negatively impact the well-being and learning of students and the well-being of teachers. Moreover, the main source of noise in schools comes from speech, a behavior that can be controlled. Students and especially teachers put pressure on their vocal system to be able to convey their oral message through auditory noise, increasing their level of vocal effort. In classrooms, visual distractions such as wall posters can be considered as visual clutter, or visual noise, an element that can also negatively impact students’ well-being and learning. Considering the multimodal, or audiovisual, nature of speech, we question the influence of visual clutter on speech. This master's thesis, composed of two studies, aimed to 1) study the subjective perception of Quebec students of their classroom in relation to objective acoustic data, and 2) study the effect of visual clutter on vocal effort in terms of acoustic parameters (SPL, f0 and CPP) and self-reported perception of female speakers. Both studies were based on mixed methods, integrating similar quantitative methods (e.g., collection of objective acoustic measurements, acoustic analyses) and similar qualitative methods (e.g., collection of subjective perceptual data, inductive analysis of open-ended questions). Quantitative and qualitative analyses of the two studies reveal that although the results relating to the objective data (acoustic measurements) were not statistically significant, the results relating to the subjective data (perception) were. For example, in the first study, students' Evaluation of the Acoustic Environment (EAE) were not all correlated with measured SPLs, and in the second study, the level of visual clutter was not correlated with acoustic parameters of SPL, f0 and CPP. These findings highlight the importance of considering and including subjective and perceptual data in studies of educational soundscapes and vocal effort, as the human experience is subjective.

Sammanfattning Nattfjärilar är en utsatt grupp när det kommer till nattbelysning, eftersom nattbelysning påverkar processer som födosök och reproduktion samt ökar deras mortalitet genom stress och ökad risk för predation. Mörka och belysta lokaler i Halmstads urbana grönområden undersöktes för att studera nattbelysningens påverkan på nattfjärilars individantal och artdiversitet. I studien visade vi på signifikanta skillnader hos både nattfjärilars individantal samt artdiversitet mellan de mörka och belysta lokalerna, där tillhörande analyser visade signifikant färre antal individer och likaså negativ trend för artdiversiteten. Analyserna visade att minskad artdiversitet och individantal i belysta lokaler inte var signifikant korrelerat med belysningsstyrkan i lokalerna. Dock finns det indikationer på att belysningsstyrkan eventuellt haft en negativ påverkan på individantalet och artdiversiteten av nattfjärilar i denna studie. Det fanns en belyst lokal som utmärkte sig med ovanligt hög diversitet där artdiversiteten var det tredje högsta uppmätta värdet i hela studien. Detta kan eventuellt bero på förekomsten av blommande buskage vilket återfanns i direkt anslutning till inventeringsområdet. Vi föreslår därför att blommande växter och buskage kan implementeras som åtgärd för att förebygga nattbelysningens påverkan på nattfjärilspopulationer. Kompletterande samt uppföljande studier av ämnet kring vilka växter som passar specifikt för nattfjärilar behövs, då det i dagsläget är ett ämne som i Sverige behöver utvecklas innan implementering av passande växter kan bli en lämplig åtgärd. / Abstract Moths are a vulnerable group when exposed to night lighting, it affects their basic drives such as foraging and reproduction and increases their mortality through stress and increased risk of predation. Dark and illuminated localities in Halmstads’ urban green areas were inventoried to study the impact of night illumination on the number of individuals and species diversity of moths. In the study, significant differences were found in the individual number of moths and species diversity between the dark and illuminated localities, which could not be significantly correlated to illuminance present in the localities. However, there were indications that illuminance may still have negatively affected the number of individuals and species diversity of moths in this study. There was one illuminated locality that stood out from the rest where species diversity was the third highest measurement from the entire study, which can possibly be attributed to the presence of flowering shrubs. Therefore we suggest that flowering shrubbery can be implemented as a measure to prevent the impact of night illumination on moth populations and becomes the basis for supplementary and follow-up studies of the subject.

Methods for face detection and adaptive face recognition

The focus of this thesis is on facial biometrics; specifically in the problems of face detection and face recognition. Despite intensive research over the last 20 years, the technology is not foolproof, which is why we do not see use of face recognition systems in critical sectors such as banking. In this thesis, we focus on three sub-problems in these two areas of research. Firstly, we propose methods to improve the speed-accuracy trade-off of the state-of-the-art face detector. Secondly, we consider a problem that is often ignored in the literature: to decrease the training time of the detectors. We propose two techniques to this end. Thirdly, we present a detailed large-scale study on self-updating face recognition systems in an attempt to answer if continuously changing facial appearance can be learnt automatically. / L'objectiu d'aquesta tesi és sobre biometria facial, específicament en els problemes de detecció de rostres i reconeixement facial. Malgrat la intensa recerca durant els últims 20 anys, la tecnologia no és infalible, de manera que no veiem l'ús dels sistemes de reconeixement de rostres en sectors crítics com la banca. En aquesta tesi, ens centrem en tres sub-problemes en aquestes dues àrees de recerca. En primer lloc, es proposa mètodes per millorar l'equilibri entre la precisió i la velocitat del detector de cares d'última generació. En segon lloc, considerem un problema que sovint s'ignora en la literatura: disminuir el temps de formació dels detectors. Es proposen dues tècniques per a aquest fi. En tercer lloc, es presenta un estudi detallat a gran escala sobre l'auto-actualització dels sistemes de reconeixement facial en un intent de respondre si el canvi constant de l'aparença facial es pot aprendre de forma automàtica.

Distributions alpha-stable pour la caractérisation de phénomènes aléatoires observés par des capteurs placés dans un environnement maritime / Alpha-stable distributions for the characterization of random phenomena observed by sensors in a marine environment

Le travail réalisé dans le cadre de cette thèse a pour but de caractériser des signaux aléatoires, rencontrés dans le domaine aérien et sous-marin, en s’appuyant sur une approche statistique. En traitement du signal, l'analyse statistique a longtemps été fondée sous l'hypothèse de Gaussianité des données. Cependant, ce modèle n'est plus valide dès lors que la densité de probabilité des données se caractérise par des phénomènes de queues lourdes et d'asymétrie. Une famille de lois est particulièrement adaptée pour représenter de tels phénomènes : les distributions α-stables. Dans un premier temps, les distributions α-stables ont été présentées et utilisées pour estimer des données synthétiques et réelles, issues d'un sondeur monofaisceau, dans une stratégie de classification de fonds marins. La classification est réalisée à partir de la théorie des fonctions de croyance, permettant ainsi de prendre en compte l'imprécision et l'incertitude liées aux données et à l'estimation de celles-ci. Les résultats obtenus ont été comparés à un classifieur Bayésien. Dans un second temps, dans le contexte de la surveillance maritime, une approche statistique à partir des distributions α-stables a été réalisée afin de caractériser les échos indésirables réfléchis par la surface maritime, appelés aussi fouillis de mer, où la surface est observée en configuration bistatique. La surface maritime a d'abord été générée à partir du spectre d'Elfouhaily puis la Surface Équivalente Radar (SER) de celle-ci a été déterminée à partir de l'Optique Physique (OP). Les distributions de Weibull et ont été utilisées et comparées au modèle α-stable. La validité de chaque modèle a été étudiée à partir d'un test de Kolmogorov-Smirnov. / The purpose of this thesis is to characterize random signals, observed in air and underwater context, by using a statistical approach. In signal processing, the hypothesis of Gaussian model is often used for a statistical study. However, the Gaussian model is not valid when the probability density function of data are characterized by heavy-tailed and skewness phenomena. A family of laws can fit these phenomena: the α-stable distributions. Firstly, the α-stable distribution have been used to estimate generated and real data, extracted from a mono-beam echo-sounder, for seabed sediments classification. The classification is made by using the theory of belief functions, which can take into account the imprecision and uncertainty of data and theirs estimations. The results have been compared to a Bayesian approach. Secondly, in a context a marine surveillance, a statistical study from the α-stable distribution has been made to characterize undesirable echo reflected by a sea surface, called sea clutter, where the sea surface is considered in a bistatic configuration. The sea surface has been firstly generated by the Elfouhaily sea spectrum and the Radar Cross Section (RCS) of the sea surface has been computed by the Physical Optics (PO). The Weibull and distributions have been used and the results compared to the α-stable model. The validity of each model has been evaluated by a Kolmogorov-Smirnov test.

Sparse Processing Methodologies Based on Compressive Sensing for Directions of Arrival Estimation

In this dissertation, sparse processing of signals for directions-of-arrival (DoAs) estimation is addressed in the framework of Compressive Sensing (CS). In particular, DoAs estimation problem for different types of sources, systems, and applications are formulated in the CS paradigm. In addition, the fundamental conditions related to the ``Sparsity'' and ``Linearity'' are carefully exploited in order to apply confidently the CS-based methodologies. Moreover, innovative strategies for various systems and applications are developed, validated numerically, and analyzed extensively for different scenarios including signal to noise ratio (SNR), mutual coupling, and polarization loss. The more realistic data from electromagnetic (EM) simulators are often considered for various analysis to validate the potentialities of the proposed approaches. The performances of the proposed estimators are analyzed in terms of standard root-mean-square error (RMSE) with respect to different degrees-of-freedom (DoFs) of DoAs estimation problem including number of elements, number of signals, and signal properties. The outcomes reported in this thesis suggest that the proposed estimators are computationally efficient (i.e., appropriate for real time estimations), robust (i.e., appropriate for different heterogeneous scenarios), and versatile (i.e., easily adaptable for different systems).

Channel Probing for an Indoor Wireless Communications Channel

The statistics of the amplitude, time and angle of arrival of multipaths in an indoor environment are all necessary components of multipath models used to simulate the performance of spatial diversity in receive antenna configurations. The model presented by Saleh and Valenzuela, was added to by Spencer et. al., and included all three of these parameters for a 7 GHz channel. A system was built to measure these multipath parameters at 2.4 GHz for multiple locations in an indoor environment. Another system was built to measure the angle of transmission for a 6 GHz channel. The addition of this parameter allows spatial diversity at the transmitter along with the receiver to be simulated. The process of going from raw measurement data to discrete arrivals and then to clustered arrivals is analyzed. Many possible errors associated with discrete arrival processing are discussed along with possible solutions. Four clustering methods are compared and their relative strengths and weaknesses are pointed out. The effects that errors in the clustering process have on parameter estimation and model performance are also simulated.
