Communities of workers: free labor in provincial Massachusetts, 1690-1765

Nellis, Eric Guest January 1979 (has links)
The particular forms of work in provincial Massachusetts influenced and were reflected in the structure of that society to an extent previously ignored by social historians. While this study presents a description of individual practices and collective patterns of work, it addresses itself to the broader framework of provincial society. As the analysis proceeds, it tests the conclusions of a large number of recent historians who have found significant change in the social structure of Massachusetts in the decades prior to 1765. There were two distinct settings for work in the province: the rural network of self-contained towns where subsistence farming and an informal system of labor and commodity exchange formed a socio-economic base for the great majority of the population; and the commercial economy of coastal Massachusetts, as exemplified by Boston, where contracted specialized crafts work and individual control of production were the most common features of labor. This analysis of work and workers reveals a marked difference in the respective forms of work in each of the settings, but it confirms a similar degree of communal influence upon the nature and objectives of work. Conversely, the chief features and arrangements of work helped to sustain the established forms of family, domicile and local society. / Arts, Faculty of / History, Department of / Graduate

Negotiating Identities, Striving for State Recongition: Blacks in Cordoba, Argentina 1776-1853

Edwards, Erika D 04 August 2011 (has links)
Race in Argentina played a significant role as a highly durable construct by identifying and advancing subjects (1776-1810) and citizens (1811-1853). My dissertation explores the intricacies of power relations by focusing on the ways in which race informed the legal process during the transition from a colonial to national State. It argues that the State’s development in both the colonial and national periods depended upon defining and classifying African descendants. In response, people of African descendent used the State’s assigned definitions and classifications to advance their legal identities. It employs race and culture as operative concepts, and law as a representation of the sometimes, tense relationship between social practices and the State’s concern for social peace. This dissertation examines the dynamic nature of the court. It utilizes the theoretical concepts multicentric legal orders that are analyzed through weak and strong legal pluralisms, and jurisdictional politics, from the late eighteenth to early nineteenth centuries. This dissertation juxtaposes various levels of jurisdiction (canon/state law and colonial/national law) to illuminate how people of color used the legal system to ameliorate their social condition. In each chapter the primary source materials are state generated documents which include criminal, ecclesiastical, civil, and marriage dissent court cases along with notarial and census records. Though it would appear that these documents would provide a superficial understanding of people of color, my analysis provides both a top-down and bottom-up approach that reflects a continuous negotiation for African descendants’ goal for State recognition. These approaches allow for implicit or explicit negotiation of a legal identity that transformed slaves and free African descendants into active agents of their own destinies.

In this work we propose a problem in the field of brazilian historiography on economics and society, under the angle of the market. We seek to realize a discussion between the perspective of the Old Colonial System and the Old Regime in the Tropics one. After twenty and a couple of years from de beginning of the controversy, the issues that kept them separated in opposite sites seem to have lost its meaning. As all history is contemporary history, the context which had informed a change of questions about colonial past, following the consolidation of the dispute and the revision of stablished thesis, has shifted once again. The problem of our time being defined by the mercantilization of all aspects of life brings about the question of how its mechanisms operated at the colony and how was its relation with society, and with this allows the possibility of dialogue between the two distinct unity of analysis through the market issue, as well as make possible to apprehend historiography's last decades field through it, in its incursions on regional history. For that, we trail the course of the tensions brought forth by the realization of colonial business, which, in the passage to the eighteenth century, are identified in various phenomenas connected with economic life being oriented to the market / Mestrado / Historia Economica / Mestre em Desenvolvimento Econômico

Unknown Date (has links)
"The aim of this study is to compare and contrast the teaching of reading in Colonial Massachusetts during the seventeenth century with the teaching of reading in Florida during the mid-twentieth century. The content and method of teaching during any period is interwoven with the character of the social order which includes the government and the nature of the child as conceived of by the adult. Therefore, the character of the government and the nature of the child as conceived by the adult during seventeenth century Massachusetts is presented. The character of the government and the nature of the child as conceived by the adult in twentieth century United States is also given. A summary is made. This constitutes chapter two. In chapter three a comparison and contrast of the teaching of reading in these two periods are given, and a summary is made. In chapter four conclusions are drawn and implications are given"--Introduction. / "May, 1950." / Typescript. / Advisor: M. H. Legal Associations: Modern United States Indian Policies and their Seventeenth-Century Antecedents

Walters, Samuel P. 28 August 2006 (has links)
After establishing its first permanent colony in North America, the English government in the seventeenth-century began creating a legal context for their relationship with the Native Americans living in close proximity to the colonists. In a similar fashion, the United States government, immediately following independence from Great Britain, focused on developing policies to address its legal relationship with the Native American nations that resided within and on the borders of the United States. By examining the statutes, treaties, and court rulings regarding North American Indians used by both the United States and England, this thesis will highlight the close similarities that exist between modern federal policies and seventeenth-century English policies. Each chapter focuses on an important modern United States Indian policy and then presents corresponding evidence from seventeenth-century legal sources. / Master of Arts

de Beer, Amanda Erika 03 1900 (has links)
ENGLISH ABSTRACT : This dissertation investigates how the African colonial period is portrayed in German youth literature. German adventure literature is often set in the African colonial period. However, motifs in the adventure novel do not always correspond with historical themes and geographical spaces. This gives the impression that such novels stand outside of time and space and that the historical and geographical context merely emphasize the distance between Africa and Europe. In light of the fact that Africa and its historical context are often reduced to an exotic backdrop, questions are raised about the way authors examine the colonial period in the adventure literature and how the portrayal of Africa has changed since 1945. The question how the African colonial period is portrayed in German youth literature is therefore examined within the context of the traditional adventure literature. Reflecting on adventure literature before 1945 on the one hand and adventure stories after 1945 on the other, this study examines to what extent youth books and their portrayal of the colonial period have changed and how these books relate back to the traditional adventure literature. For this purpose, adventure stories and adventurous youth stories and –novels that are set in the colonial period in Africa are analysed and the study focuses on four periods: Firstly, traditional adventure stories and motifs that play an important role in the portrayal of Africa are identified. The following are analysed: C. Falkenhorst’s Der Baumtöter (1894), Gustav Frenssen’s Peter Moors Fahrt nach Südwest (1906), Josef S. Viera’s Bana Sikukuu (1924) and Gust in der Klemme (1933), Max Mezger’s Aufruhr auf Madagaskar (1930) and Rolf Italiaander’s Wüstenfüchse (1934). Secondly, the dissertation investigates what role adventure motifs – initiation, resistance and conquest – play in the youth literature of the Federal Republic of Germany. The following are analysed: Kurt Lütgen’s …die Katzen von Sansibar zählen (1962), Rolf Italiaander’s Mubange, der Junge aus dem Urwald (1957), Herbert Kaufmann’s Der Teufel tanzt im Ju-Ju-Busch and his historical novel Des Königs Krokodil (1959). Thirdly, the study examines adventure motifs – noble savage (edle Wilde), anti-hero and the duel – in the literature published in the German Democratic Republic. These are Ferdinand May’s novel Sturm über Südwest-Afrika (1962) and Götz R. Richter’s Savvy-Trilogie (1955-1963) and Die Löwen kommen (1969). Lastly, the dissertation poses the question to what extent the contemporary adventure literature – like Hermann Schulz’ missionary novel Auf dem Strom (1998) – shows a new development which deviates from the traditional adventure literature of the 19th and 20th century.
