Facilitators and barriers to communication : an observational study of the long-term care environment

McArthur, Exer Marie 21 November 2013 (has links)
The impact of the physical environment on communication for residents of long-term care (LTC) facilities has not been examined in depth. No study currently exists which explores environmental influences on communication within the long-term care setting. Investigation of such facilities is important because of the a large impact environmental features have on the quality of life of residents due to the often restricted nature of daily routines and reduced level of cognitive and/or physical function of residents. A definition of environment is needed in order to create a methodology for assessment and treatment of residents in LTC facilities. This study investigates what factors contribute to a positive communication environment in long-term care facilities and how the physical environment should be assessed. Observational data was obtained for three LTC residents with different types of physical and communicative impairments to determine what environmental factors inhibit or support communication. Barriers and facilitators to communication are identified, and recommendations for assessment of the long-term care environment are made. Contributions from the fields of aphasiology, environmental gerontology, and environmental psychology are described in order to contribute to the understanding of what contributes to a positive communication environment. Study results included support for: participant observation as a component of resident assessment, assessment of multiple environments, the importance considering individual needs during assessment, and assessment of resident perception of environment. Furthermore, this study presents a checklist to be used to guide observational assessments. / text

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION, COMMUNICATION ENVIRONMENT, AND DECISION LEGITIMACY: A CASE IN CHINA

PAN, LINGLING January 2012 (has links)
Questions regarding the concept of legitimacy are central to social and political science. Exploring how people justify legitimacy and why people grant legitimacy to leadership and collective decisions in groups, organizations, and nations is generally agreed to be essential to scholarship on legitimacy. One line of research finds contributing factors in bureaucratic effectiveness and efficiency that can provide substantive benefits to people. Another line of research expands legitimacy to procedural elements such as fairness of treatment or quality of communication (deliberation) in the decision making process. This dissertation intends to contribute to the research of legitimacy and hopes to further the understanding of communication's role in decision outcome legitimacy by incorporating two sets of contributing factors: Performance factors and communication factors. This will enable a side-by-side comparison of instrumentalist and communicative factors in predicting legitimation. In addition, the study will observe the quality of the communication environment as a contextual variable upon which the relationship between performance elements and decision outcome legitimacy depends. Specifically, how the communication environment moderates the strength of the relationship between output of public service in a certain domain and the perceived legitimacy of the decision made in the same domain will be observed. Drawing on the framework from Habermas's theory of communicative action and the public sphere, the literature on deliberative democracy, and organizational studies, the project intends to observe how the communication environment or speech conditions (in Habermasian terms) may affect the legitimacy of a decision outcome, and at the same time may influence the relationship between the perceived performance in a certain public service sector and the perceived legitimacy of a decision outcome in the same sector. Using a sample of 255 adult residents in Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan province in southwest China, the study found that perceived government performance and perceived speech conditions were both positively related to perceived legitimacy of government decision; furthermore, perceived speech conditions moderated the relationship between the performance evaluation and legitimacy perception. These findings suggest some important insights into the role of communication in political legitimation and the evolving communication expectations in China. / Mass Media and Communication

Mobile Activity Coordination through Integrating Physical and Simulated Software Agents

Lin, Shyh-ming 13 August 2007 (has links)
As wireless communication services get more and more pervasively available, mobile people can easily interact with service providers and handily communicate with each other through mobile devices. In the mobile environment, mobile users can plan their activity schedules and run their schedules with the assistance of mobile devices. When mobile users are engaged in their activities, they can instantly perceive contextual information and their activity schedules therefore tend to be context dependent, i.e., mobile users may alter their objectives and decision makings as soon as the environmental context varies. Besides, for a mobile user, once any exception happens, he/she is apt to adapt his/her activity schedule to reduce the impact of the exception. In the mobile environment, since the environmental resources are limited and can¡¦t satisfy all mobile users¡¦ demands, conflicts are likely to occur while mobile users plan, alter or adapt their personal activity schedules. This study concentrates itself on resolving the conflicts. This conflict problem is formulated as a multi-criteria context-dependent DCOP (distributed constraint optimization problem). This problem is complicated and highly dynamic, and the joint optimality to this problem might be time-variant. This study proposes an integrated agents system SPA and a novel problem solving approach 2S-DORA to enable mobile users to coordinate their activities to maintain optimality. The SPA, which integrates the Simulated and Physical Agents, is employed to enhance mobile users¡¦ sensory, analytic, reasoning and social abilities. The 2S-DORA takes advantage of the SPA abilities to help mobile users quickly and effectively adapt themselves to the context variations and to the exceptions. This study takes a traveling backpacker problem as an example to demonstrate how the proposed SPA and 2S-DORA contribute to solve the multi-criteria context-dependent DCOP. Five experiments finally are designed to evaluate the performance of the application of SPA and 2S-DORA.

On the other hand, the changes it faces along the way are also closely linked to that culture. Likewise, film criticism studies cinema from a theoretical bias taking such transformations into account when its productions is about both filmic forms and the way film criticism is produced and disseminated. In this thesis, one sought to understand how the film criticism is configured from the use of hypertext networks on the web for its production, starting from the point of view of Comuncational Ecosystems to understand a phenomenon that presents itself in an mediatic communication environment. With such purpose, one used the concept of Expanded Cinema, coined by Gene Youngblood (2001), as a basis for studying film criticism created from these networks in their complexity. The concept of Acoustic Space, developed by Marshall McLuhan (1964, 1971, 1980), also provides the basis for thinking about the communication phenomenon in all its complexity and in a systemic way. It was elaborated an observation script for the site chosen for the empirical cut, Metacritic (http://www.metacritic.com) to perform a data collection, which took place between 3 December 2012 and 3 January 2013, in order to monitor the formation of the hypertext network of the film criticism posted on the site. The research concludes that film criticism on the web can be thought as Expanded Criticism that takes place in an acoustic space, since it is beyond a two-dimensional spatiality. The performance of the reading done by the internet user creates this expanded criticism through a haptic visuality that allows one navigate through the content. The enjoyment of expanded criticism is beyond its hypertextual nature and it is also sensory, cognitive and multimedia, implying an experience, from the ecosystemical standpoint, focused on relations.

The main purpose of this research was to verify the range on which the virtual classes could either or neither contribute to the learning process. The study was shaped according to 50% of presence classes and 50% of non presence ones. Virtual learning was used for non presence activities (AVA) Moodle. In the context of the research, the researcher was a copartner in the working up and effective accomplishment of pedagogical activities and virtual ones (AVA), as well as a researcher in exercise in the presence and non presence activities, developed by his/her professor. Because of the pedagogical range that the subject presented itself, thematic cuttings were essential for data analysis. Communicational perspectives were researched then, hyper textual information about the developed subject and the above-mentioned (AVA). With the analysis categories of every perspective above-mentioned, interchanges of speech were developed in forum and chats when, they were contrasted it was found the construction of an interactive communication and expressive textual dialogue as the priority perspective signalized. Simultaneously, the dissertation also contributed to sections, whose debates gave a subsidy to themes, not totally clarified by the approach pertaining to a not present education (EaD). The themes approached passed by possible differences between interaction and interactivities, and also about the possibility to create communicational spaces, which developed themselves. It also holds conceptions about emblematical themes, technologies of information and communication (TIC) and (AVA). The legal base about the EaD and some contributions examined in the development of the subject that lay the foundation and stimulate virtual practices. In this context the research created new thoughts about pedagogical virtual practices, mainly to involve the researched subject, a non conventional practice in similar research in the field of Mathematics. This practice approaches a subject in the field of education not for the specific Mathematics subject.
