“Transgress[ing] society’s rules”: Identity coding within LGBTQ+ communitiesHartung, Julie A. 01 December 2023 (has links) (PDF)
As a historically and currently marginalized population, members of LGBTQ+ communities have traditionally needed to find one another and build relationships without their queer identities being discovered. This need has resulted in the development of codes and signals used by queer people to identify one another while remaining hidden, causing a unique culture of covert, in-group communication to form. In this study, I explore the modern culture of codes being used by LGBTQ+ communities through 14 interviews with LGBTQ+ people. From these interviews, I developed two broad themes: conveying and concealing identity. When discussing how they convey their identity, participants discuss not only the behaviors they use themselves but also those used by others. Some of these behaviors are general associations they hold between various cultural phenomena and queer identity, but often they are factors that allow them to make inferences about the identities of others despite the simultaneous importance they place on disclosure when it comes to truly knowing another’s queer identity. When on the topic of concealing identity, participants generally focused on themselves, discussing where, why, and how they concealed their identity. From these results, it is clear that developing the ability to convey or conceal one’s identity is an important skill within queer communities, as it allows individuals to live authentically and safely. However, these abilities are not without negative side effects, as the balancing act between conveying and concealing one’s identity requires queer individuals to live in a state of constant identity-based behavioral micro-management. In the end, these behaviors are not just culture – they are a form of survival when it has been, is, and will continue to be dangerous on some level to be queer.

Impact of Function-Based Self-Monitoring with Functional Communication Training and Differential Reinforcement on Student BehaviorRoulhac, Sydney 22 March 2019 (has links)
The current literature on self-monitoring provides limited information on increasing functional communication skills in students with disabilities by incorporating function-based intervention. The purpose of this study was to extend self-monitoring literature by incorporating functional communication training (FCT) into self-monitoring intervention and targeting students who engage in problem behavior due to communication difficulties. Three students with disabilities served in kindergarten through 3rd grade and their corresponding teachers participated in this study. A multiple baseline across participants design with an ABC sequence was used to investigate the impact of function-based self-monitoring (SM) with FCT only and function-based SM with FCT augmented with differential reinforcement of alternative behavior (DRA) on student functional communicative behavior, academic engagement, and problem behavior. The results indicated that the function-based SM with FCT was effective in increasing functional communicative behavior and academic engagement behavior and decreasing problem behavior for all participating students. The addition of DRA further improved behavioral outcomes for one student. Results were maintained for three participants while fading the magnitude of the intervention. Students and teachers rated the function-based SM treatment package as effective and acceptable.

A Behavioral Approach to Human-Robot CommunicationOu, Shichao 01 February 2010 (has links)
Robots are increasingly capable of co-existing with human beings in the places where we live and work. I believe, however, for robots to collaborate and assist human beings in their daily lives, new methods are required for enhancing humanrobot communication. In this dissertation, I focus on how a robot can acquire and refine expressive and receptive communication skills with human beings. I hypothesize that communication has its roots in motor behavior and present an approach that is unique in the following aspects: (1) representations of humans and the skills for interacting with them are learned in the same way as the robot learns to interact with other “objects,” (2) expressive behavior naturally emerges as the result of the robot discovering new utility in existing manual behavior in a social context, and (3) symmetry in communicative behavior can be exploited to bootstrap the learning of receptive behavior. Experiments have been designed to evaluate the approach: (1) as a computational framework for learning increasingly comprehensive models and behavior for communicating with human beings and, (2) from a human-robot interaction perspective that can adapt to a variety of human behavior. Results from these studies illustrate that the robot successfully acquired a variety of expressive pointing gestures using multiple limbs and eye gaze, and the perceptual skills with which to recognize and respond to similar gestures from humans. Due to variations in human reactions over the training subjects, the robot developed a preference for certain gestures over others. These results support the experimental hypotheses and offer insights for extensions of the computation framework and experimental designs for future studies.

Thinking about communication as an instrument for the social reintegration of individuals with schizophrenia, phonoaudiology emerges with the proposal to overcome the barrier of developmental disorders by building a psychosocial clinic, strengthening the struggle for Psychiatric Reform. The objectives of the study were to verify the effectiveness of the speech-language intervention in the communicative behavior of individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia and to evaluate the satisfaction of the participants of the speech-language intervention group (SIG), in relation to the proposed activities and the contribution to the treatment. This is a longitudinal, semi-experimental, quantitative analytical-exploratory and qualitative descriptive study, in which 19 individuals with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, of both sex, aged 19 to 59 years old, and at least five years of schooling, users of a Psychosocial Attention Center III (PSAC III), 14 individuals participated in the Experimental Group (EG), composing the SIG and 5 individuals formed the Control Group (CG). The communicative behavior was evaluated through the Brief MAC Battery and the statements, analyzed in light of the Inductive Content Analysis. The GIF was performed in 2 weekly sessions, during 12 weeks, totalizing 24 sessions. After this period, individuals were reassessed. Data were analyzed through inferential statistics, using the Kolmogorov Smirnov Tests; Student\'s t-test; Wilcoxon test, Mann Whitney non-parametric test, and Pearson\'s correlation test. Statistical software R, version 2.11.0 was used. With a meaninful level equals to 5%. In GE, it was possible to observe that there was improvement in the communicative behavior after the speech-language intervention in all the tasks evaluated, except in the task of writing. In CG, no significant changes were observed comparing evaluation and reevaluation after 12 weeks. The statements were divided into the following thematic categories: \"Promoting Satisfaction\"; \"Communicating with the Body\" and \"Stimulating Autonomy\", and it can be considered that, according to the participants, the SIG promoted satisfaction, non-verbal communication and the autonomy of the participants. The advances in communicative behavior after participation in SIG were evident, which also contributed to the social interaction, bringing satisfaction and reinforcing the autonomy, so important in the psychosocial rehabilitation of people with schizophrenia. With this paper, it is understood that the speech-language intervention is effective in improving the communicative behavior of individuals with schizophrenia and that speech-language therapy can broaden their areas of action, using communication as a socialization tool and contributing to the improvement of the living conditions of these people in mental suffering

Гендерные особенности коммуникативного поведения телеведущего (на материале политических ток-шоу) : магистерская диссертация / Gender features of the communicative behavior of the TV presenter (based on political talk shows)Харитонова, Ю. С., Kharitonova, Y. S. January 2017 (has links)
The dissertation is devoted to the problem of communicative behavior in political talk shows. The gender specificity of speech behavior of TV hostesses Vladimir Solovyov and Olga Skabеeva is described; communicative rules and principles that they follow throughout the broadcast in the context of gender role are defined; the set of generic strategies is detected: self-presentation strategy, discredit strategy, cooperative-phatic strategy. Such a universal set of identified strategies (and representing their tactics) allows to make a conclusion that today in political discourse femininity is neutralized, but at the same time the tendency to apply both male and female gender strategies begins to develop actively. This new feature of modern political discourse is at the stage of formation and needs further consideration.

С., Galkina, D. S. January 2022 (has links)
The dissertation research analyzes the English-language texts of documents of international organizations from the point of view of structural, lexical-semantic, functional-stylistic and discourse features, which made it possible to define documents of international organizations as a type of political text in the system of international legal documents and intercultural communication. In the process of working on the study, the author improved the definition of the communication process through the prism of expanding the participants in communication and its interpretation not from the position of a personal actor, but in relation to the activities of collective actors in the form of states participating in the communication process, the purpose of which is to conclude an international deal. The author analyzed the correlation of text-discourse through the prism of documents of international organizations and established the interdependence and interdependence of these elements, characterized the use of special vocabulary in the texts of documents of international organizations and determined the frequency of use of document names depending on specific historical circumstances. Based on the results of the study, the author found that: the texts of documents of international organizations are political texts in their content, and in form they are documents of a diplomatic and regulatory nature, which are both the result and means of embodying the political will of states to jointly solve the problems of international relations, since they are created as a result of political communication of states and other international relations and are a declaration of the goals and mechanisms of the activities of institutions of international cooperation. Thus, as a result of the study, it was determined that the texts of documents of international organizations, as integral units, are characteristic of a high level of implementation of textual categories of coherence, integrity, informativeness and completeness.
