Resenärers wayfinding-process i stationsmiljö utifrån rytm och manus : En observationsstudie av Stockholm City / Travelers’ wayfinding process in station environments based on script and rhythm : An observational study of Stockholm City

Yousefi, Katajon, Eklind, Klara January 2021 (has links)
In June 2017, Citybanan and the commuter train station Stockholm City opened. In connection with the opening and after the opening, The Swedish Transport Administration gathered commuters' feedback regarding the station's overall design, environment and traffic information. The consulting company Sweco was also hired on behalf of the Swedish Transport Administration to identify the shortcomings of the station and to propose potential suggestions for further improvement. According to Sweco's investigation, there was uncertainty among travelers regarding how they should act upon arrivals with short commuter trains. The passengers did not know where to locate at the station, they often had to run to catch the train and sometimes some travelers even missed the short commuter train due to inadequate guidance and traffic information. This essay, therefore, aims to explore how individuals act in station environments, more specifically at Stockholm City commuter train station through observations. The observations of a total of 800 passengers help to create an understanding of how the physical environment and traffic information affect human actions when they have to navigate on the platform while waiting for a short commuter train. The essays completed field studies and observations are analyzed using observiarie as a method to capture the actions and behaviors of individual travelers. The passengers are then also clustered into five different passenger identities: the determined target seeker, the confident, the group traveler, the seeker, and finally the difficult to influence, to further explain passengers' actions at a commuter train station and explain why some travelers seem to miss their departure when short commuter trains arrives.

Ombyggnad av Spånga station : En väg för mer attraktiva resor / Reconstruction of Spånga station : Towards an more attractive journey

Bitén, Nicole, Ahmed, Faryal January 2015 (has links)
With an entirety of 6000 travelers per day Spånga station is one the most frequented stations. The commuter station underwent its latest reconstruction 2004 where only half the station was rebuilt. The adjustments made where not thorough, subsequently dividing the station into two parts from different time periods. This has caused problems with the station floor plans and architectural design. The current floor plans encourage queues and congestion at rush hour in several parts of the station. The cause for this is the placement of the stairs since their location results in the orientation of the building. The project conducted a study which revealed that the main problems arise during rush hour, which is 06: 00-08: 00 for departures to Stockholm Central Station and 16:00-18:00 for arrivals from Stockholm Central Station. The purpose of the project was to create floor plans that provided a more flexible flow pattern for all passengers. The stations exterior design would be formed more welcoming for the travelers. The project is based on answering the question: Is it possible to perform a reconstruction that eliminates the most prominent problems? The station would also be designed so that it became more welcoming to visitors and passersby. The main limitations of this project were the platform predetermined width. The work was also limited to the architectural restrictions of the reconstruction. The aim is to contribute floor plans that provide better arrangements by studies made during the project. Furthermore, the exterior design is meant provide an aesthetically cohesive building. AutoCAD was used to obtain primary drawings and Revit Architecture 2015 to finalize the draft documents. The station's exterior shape is linked together with a glass section that delivers more sunlight into the station. The station has been expanded with two larger waiting rooms providing a more spacious feeling. Draft documents show that the new floorplan has eliminated practically all the problem areas. All the faults with the station could not be abolished for various reasons but mainly due to the restrictions placed by the platforms size. The concept drawings for the new station show that there is a more distinct connection through the stations exterior. The glass section extends around the entire building which creates a link to the remaining parts of the station whilst providing an agreeable view for by-passers and travelers

A Real-Time Capable Adaptive Optimal Controller for a Commuter Train

Yazhemsky, Dennis Ion January 2017 (has links)
This research formulates and implements a novel closed-loop optimal control system that drives a train between two stations in an optimal time, energy efficient, or mixed objective manner. The optimal controller uses sensor feedback from the train and in real-time computes the most efficient control decision for the train to follow given knowledge of the track profile ahead of the train, speed restrictions and required arrival time windows. The control problem is solved both on an open track and while safely driving no closer than a fixed distance behind another locomotive. In contrast to other research in the field, this thesis achieves a real-time capable and embeddable closed-loop optimization with advanced modeling and numerical solving techniques with a non-linear optimal control problem. This controller is first formulated as a non-convex control problem and then converted to an advanced convex second-order cone problem with the intent of using a simple numerical solver, ensuring global optimality, and improving control robustness. Convex and non-convex numerical methods of solving the control problem are investigated and closed-loop performance results with a simulated vehicle are presented under realistic modeling conditions on advanced tracks both on desktop and embedded computer architectures. It is observed that the controller is capable of robust vehicle driving in cases both with and without modeling uncertainty. The benefits of pairing the optimal controller with a parameter estimator are demonstrated for cases where very large mismatches exists between the controller model and the simulated vehicle. Stopping performance is consistently within 25cm of target stations, and the worst case closed-loop optimization time was within 100ms for the computation of a 1000 point control horizon on an i7-6700 machine. / Thesis / Master of Applied Science (MASc) / This research formulates and implements a novel closed-loop optimal control system that drives a train between two stations in an optimal time, energy efficient, or mixed objective manner. It is deployed on a commuter vehicle and directly manages the motoring and braking systems. The optimal controller uses sensor feedback from the train and in real-time computes the most efficient control decision for the train to follow given knowledge of the track profile ahead of the train, speed restrictions and required arrival time windows. The final control implementation is capable of safe, high accuracy and optimal driving all while computing fast enough to reliably deploy on a rail vehicle.

Optimization of comfort-related energy and thermal comfort for commuter trains : A case study of Stockholm commuter trains

Lidén, Jimmy January 2023 (has links)
Today, energy efficiency is an increasingly important question in which progress is accelerating. One of the high electricity demand energy users is public transport. In addition, passenger satisfaction with thermal comfort is an important parameter. Consequently, it is essential to consider thermal comfort in combination with the energy-saving measures of thermal-related functions. Unfortunately, there have not been a lot of investigations into improving the energy efficiency of the thermal-related functions on commuter trains, where most of the focus has been on traction energy. The first part consisted of a literature study to explore thermal-related functions, energy saving, and thermal comfort of commuter trains. At least three articles have utilized the methodology of evaluating energy measures in IDA ICE; however, none of them has considered door openings that are frequent on commuter trains. The literature study concluded which efficiency measures can be applicable for short-haul distance trains and typical approaches to evaluating thermal comfort. A commuter train is a complex and transient thermal environment, with passengers entering and leaving the train in short intervals, airflows, temperature fluctuations, and the train's movement. Simplifications of the model were made to simulate the average ambient conditions. To validate and adapt the IDA ICE model, experimental measurements were done during the winter season using a thermal camera, air speed, and temperature measurements. The model was validated through experimental measurements and data analysis. In addition, data analysis was used for evaluating some of the energy measures through available live and history-data of the train fleet. The energy efficiency measures, which are quantifiable, have been quantified using the simulation model in combination with the data-analysis. Three categories of energy-saving measures are proposed: easily implementable, medium, and measures that require physical changes of the train components. Parking mode has a lot of saving potential of 34 % of annual energy compared to baseline. With a reversible heat pump of 11 kW, heating energy saving of 43 %, and 40 % energy coverage could be obtained, with the potential for up to 100 % energy coverage but being in the category of hard to implement. Door opening reduction with a potential saving of 11 000 kWh per train in annual energy, as compared to the baseline simulated model, being in the category of easy to implement. Balancing temperature heating shutdown could save between 3 100 to 9 500 kWh per train. A setpoint temperature of 18°C could save 16.5 %, and a variable temperature setpoint curve was proposed with similar savings. Ventilation control was among those measures with the highest potential; recirculation, CO2 and temperature-controlled ventilation heating energy saving of 31 % was simulated. Thermal comfort was improved in the measures affecting thermal conditions. With a setpoint temperature of 18°C during winter and based on clothing values derived from the literature study, an improvement of thermal comfort was observed in the PMV scale for thermal comfort. With combined energy efficiency measures, the simulation results showed a reduction of heating energy of 59 %, and in addition the fan power consumption could be reduced in magnitude of up to 12 000 kWh per train and year. Finally, further suggestions on research within the area were proposed, mainly to make more long-time measurements and to improve the possibility of energy follow-up by improving the data channels and available information.
