Sperança-Criscuolo, Ana Carolina. January 2011 (has links)
In this work, we propose a description of complement constructions concerning a functional-cognitive approach. This research was motivated by problems related to grammar teaching, which is tightly associated to language structure and formal description. A corpus with narrative texts (novels, short stories and newspaper news) and argumentation texts (opinion articles, popular science texts and academic papers) was composed for the study of complement constructions. Among the subordinate constructions found in the corpus, the most frequent were the ones in which the predicator of the main clause was an elocution verb, a mental verb and the expression "be + adjective", therefore, the clauses in the position of direct object and subject. According to Functional Discourse Grammar assumptions (HENGEVELD; MACKENZIE, 2008) and the cognitive theory of Conceptual Integration (FAUCONNIER; TURNER, 2002), we observed some subjective aspects encoded by these syntactic constructions, motivated by Speaker‟s communicative intentions and by the way he/she conceptualizes the world around him. In pragmatic terms, the complement clauses we studied correspond to Speaker‟s strategies to demonstrate his commitment degree with what he‟s saying, protecting his/her face, and also assuring the information‟s reliability; in linguistic terms, they show the language suffers some adaptations (BYBEE, 2010) to serve Speaker‟s communicative needs. Concerning grammar teaching - especially syntax teaching - we believe that the focus in the functionality of these constructions can make its teaching richer and more efficient / Doutor

In this work, we propose a discussion about the presence of images, especially the metaphor and metonymy in compositions written by candidates of the Fuvest and ENEM tests, as well as the occurrence of images in a writing proposal. The motivation for this research is to identify the presence of these processes in the texts produced by the candidates and how to provide to the student resources for them to interpret a metaphorical proposal for the text and produce texts exploring the argumentative force of metaphor and metonymy. The corpus used was a sample with some writing from Fuvest and ENEM. The research was carried out from the perspective of Cognitive Linguistics, with especial emphasis on complex mental operations such as Reading and Memory; Mental Spaces; Categorization and Theory of Prototypes; Analogy; Metaphor and Metonymy; Conceptual Integration.

Assim, utilizando principalmente os esquemas de PERCURSO e de DINÂMI-CA DE FORÇAS, este trabalho procura demonstrar a eficácia da aplicabilidade desses esquemas como subsídio para o entendimento de aspectos de Grande Sertão: Vere-das, especialmente o acima citado / This dissertation aims at employing the theory of Cognitive Linguistics, spe-cially the image schema and the conceptual integration frameworks to analyze the ex-cerpts where the relationship between Riobaldo e Diadorim is explored by Guimarães Rosa in Grande Sertão: Veredas. According to this theory, image schemas are the basic elements that underlie language performance, structuring preconceptually our world bodily experience; they are also employed in literature and, according to Mark Turner (1996), constitutes an excellent resource for creating meaning effects in literary texts. Accordingly metaphorical projections of crossing structured by image schemas analyzed in this title by Guimarães Rosa are object of special interest, inasmuch they are seen by present neuroscience as an organizer principle of thought and human crea-tivity. Therefore, by employing SOURCE-PATH-GOAL and FORCE DYNAMICS image schemas, this work seeks to demonstrate the efficacy of the applicability of those schemas as a base for understanding aspects of Grande Sertão: Veredas, par-ticularly the ones reported above

Linguistic creativity and mental representation with reference to intercategorial

Zawada, Britta 30 November 2005 (has links)
In this thesis, the phenomenon of intercategorial polysemy is approached from two related but previously unconnected perspectives, namely that of linguistic creativity and mental representation. It is argued that the creativity that is part and parcel of the linguistic abilities of each and every human being, has been neglected in the study of linguistics, and should, in fact, form the basis of studies such as these in cognitive lexical creativity. It is argued that structural productivity (the generative view of linguistic creativity) and conceptual creativity lie on a continuum, the middle ground of which is covered by phenomena which are both productive and creative and which have both a formal and a semantic aspect to them. One such a phenomenon is intercategorial polysemy. Explaining the way in which speakers of a language such as English can systematically and productively produce and interpret words that belong to more than one syntactic category (for example, hammerN - hammerV, tableN - tableV, skyN - skyV), which may range from the conventionalised to the completely innovative, has long been a problem for linguists. Traditional morphological accounts involving theoretical notions such as zero derivation have always been found to be inadequate, mostly because zero derivation does not account for the variation in meaning and the background knowledge that is needed to produce and interpret novel instances. The main problem addressed in this thesis then is the question as to the nature of the lexical knowledge of speakers and its mental representation, so that it can form the basis for the cognitive processes that will enable language users to be linguistically creative. Various theoretical models that have been proposed to account for intercategorial polysemy, namely the representationalderivational model, the network-activation model, as well as the theory of conceptual integration (also called blending), are presented and evaluated in the light of a representative sample of completely novel instances of intercategorial polysemy. / Linguistics / D. Intertextuality reinterpreted : a cognitive linguistics approach with specific reference to conceptual blending

Van Heerden, Chantelle 30 June 2008 (has links)
In this dissertation, I investigate the cognitive processes integral to intertextual readings by referring to the cognitive linguistics framework known as conceptual blending. I refer to different genres of intertextual texts and then explain these intertexts in terms of cognitive principles and processes, such as conceptual blending networks. By applying the framework of conceptual blending to intertexts within different genres, I suggest that the underlying cognitive processes are universal for the interpretation of any type of intertextual text. My findings indicate that conceptual blending underpins intertextuality which is cognitive, creative and dynamic in nature. This means that the meaning we construct from intertexts is dependent on the context in which they appear and cannot be studied in isolation. Investigating intertextual texts from a cognitive linguistics perspective reveals new inferences (such as the influence of implicit knowledge as a type of intertext) and the creativity involved in the meaning-making process. / Linguistics / M.A. (Linguistics)

Pagán Cánovas, Cristóbal 25 June 2009 (has links)
This dissertation discusses Aristotle's approach to metaphor, Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Blending Theory, and proposes that the latter constitutes a change of paradigm. I use Blending Theory to model a conceptual pattern generalizing over several case studies of verbal figuration, in different periods of Greek love poetry: ancient Greek lyric, the emergence of the arrows of love in the archaic and classical periods, medieval folksongs, and two 20th century poets, Ritsos and Elytis. All these poetic images share a conceptual pattern that can be modelled with a generic integration network of EROTIC EMISSION. Variation in the realization of the pattern crucially relies on assigning the role of the emitter to the loved person or to an external agent, and on the instantiation of the EMISSION image schema, like light, wind, or an object. Culture and context impose further constraints that can be studied systematically.
