IDENTIFYING ORGANIZATIONAL CONTAINMENT AND ITS EFFECT ON THE CAREER PATHS OF BLACK EDUCATORS

Berry, Risha 01 January 2014 (has links)
The racial composition of the school workforce is the product of a complex interaction of social forces. School constituencies such as parents, students, and teachers impact new leader preferences. Their ideas influence decisions regarding who fits into school administration and who doesn't (Williams & Loeb, 2012). These "fit" preferences can shape school district ethos, which then influences access to social networks (Tooms, 2010). Limited entry to these networks may produce multiple disadvantages, particularly for Black educators. One way to think of this access is through the concept of containment. Restricted data from the 2011-12 Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS) will be used to detect containment trends: The set of systemic barriers organizational members encounter in pursuit of access to organizational resources critical to job effectiveness and career advancement. Left unchallenged, glass barriers in employment may reinforce pejorative judgments of minorities, isolating them in high stress, and low autonomy positions (Feagin, 2006).

Semantic Caching for XML Queries

Chen, Li 29 January 2004 (has links)
With the advent of XML, great challenges arise from the demand for efficiently retrieving information from remote XML sources across the Internet. The semantic caching technology can help to improve the efficiency of XML query processing in the Web environment. Different from the traditional tuple or page-based caching systems, semantic caching systems exploit the idea of reusing cached query results to answer new queries based on the query containment and rewriting techniques. Fundamental results on the containment of relational queries have been established. In the XML setting, the containment problem remains unexplored for comprehensive XML query languages such as XQuery, and little has been studied with respect to the cache management issue such as replacement. Hence, this dissertation addresses two issues fundamental to building an XQuery-based semantic caching system: XQuery containment and rewriting, and an effective replacement strategy. We first define a restricted XQuery fragment for which the containment problem is tackled. For two given queries $Q1$ and $Q2$, a preprocessing step including variable minimization and query normalization is taken to transform them into a normal form. Then two tree structures are constructed for respectively representing the pattern matching and result construction components of the query semantics. Based on the tree structures, query containment is reduced to tree homomorphism, with some specific mapping conditions. Important notations and theorems are also presented to support our XQuery containment and rewriting approaches. For the cache replacement, we propose a fine-grained replacement strategy based on the detailed user access statistics recorded on the internal XML view structure. As a result, less frequently used XML view fragments are replaced to achieve a better utilization of the cache space. Finally, we has implemented a semantic caching system called ACE-XQ to realize the proposed techniques. Case studies are conducted to confirm the correctness of our XQuery containment and rewriting approaches by comparing the query results produced by utilizing ACE-XQ against those by the remote XQuery engine. Experimental studies show that the query performance is significantly improved by adopting ACE-XQ, and that our partial replacement helps to enhance the cache hits and utilization comparing to the traditional total replacement.

Self Maintenance of Materialized XQuery Views via Query Containment and Re-Writing

Nilekar, Shirish K. 24 April 2006 (has links)
In recent years XML, the eXtensible Markup Language has become the de-facto standard for publishing and exchanging information on the web and in enterprise data integration systems. Materialized views are often used in information integration systems to present a unified schema for efficient querying of distributed and possibly heterogenous data sources. On similar lines, ACE-XQ, an XQuery based semantic caching system shows the significant performance gains achieved by caching query results (as materialized views) and using these materialized views along with query containment techniques for answering future queries over distributed XML data sources. To keep data in these materialized views of ACE-XQ up-to-date, the view must be maintained i.e. whenever the base data changes, the corresponding cached data in the materialized view must also be updated. This thesis builds on the query containment ideas of ACE-XQ and proposes an efficient approach for self-maintenance of materialized views. Our experimental results illustrate the significant performance improvement achieved by this strategy over view re-computation for a variety of situations.

Le consentement du patient assuré social / The insured patient's assent

Croize, Gildine 14 December 2011 (has links)
A major principle of health law, assent is traditionally seen within the boundaries of the binaryrelationship “patient-medical practitioner”. However, assent results from the mutual interaction between patients, medical practitioners and the social security system. Indeed, as the saying notes "Idem est non esse aut non probari", the assent must be effective to really exist. It is promoted by the recognition of the “right to health care”, implying a universal right of social security benefits. However, being financed by solidarity and obliged to respect the constitutional principle of budgetary equilibrium, social insurance must contain its costs. This is why it partakes in a policy of modification of insured patients' behaviours. The assent, at times favoured as anindividual expression of will, tends to overtaken by a social assent, thought to be socially responsible. Between prevention and education, responsibilization aims at increasing efficiency of health care management. Thus, assent, expression of rights and liberties founded on the principle of “disposing of one's body”, is more than ever the insured patient's assent. This insured patient lives in a sanitary democracy which has hazy contours oscillating between incitation and healthcare obligation. These may struggle with the right to respect for private life.

A systems psychodynamic exploration towards the development of a model of language use as manifestation of leadership anxiety dynamics

Flotman, Aden-Paul 09 1900 (has links)
Leaders bring unconscious information into their personal and working relationships. Some of this unconscious material is communicated through language use, and it is argued that one of the bridges between the unconscious and the conscious is language use. It is postulated that insight is possible into leaders’ understanding, meaning-making and leadership experience by exploring their language use, as the vehicle through which they make sense of the world. Hence, the aim of this study was to explore by developing and describing a systems psychodynamic model of language use as manifestation of leadership anxiety dynamics, to refine this theoretical model, and to explore the utility value of the theoretical model. A qualitative and descriptive research method was selected towards reaching this aim. Hermeneutic phenomenology, using the systems psychodynamic perspective allowed for the description, analysis and interpretation of the experiences of participants. Data was collected through a purposive, convenient sample, in the form of three listening posts, which comprised systems psychodynamic practitioners, business leaders and post-modern discourse analysts. Data was analysed by means of critical discourse analysis and systems psychodynamically informed discourse analysis. Manifesting themes were the language of titles, as potential space, and the language of silence versus non-silence; anxiety and its triggers, anxiety and leadership response, and anxiety and language use; the sources of anxiety, language as unconscious defence and offence and towards a language of vulnerability. The findings indicated that leaders use both conscious and unconscious expressions of language simultaneously. Language use manifested as the carrier of conscious messages (between sender and receiver) as well as the unconscious role of language, to attack (accessing the dark side of language use) or defend against anxieties, and to cover leadership vulnerabilities. Language use as container, as well as transitional phenomenon (a potential space) is a carrier of anxieties. Language use thus has the potential to be used for its defensive, regressive and relational value. In a world of uncertainty and increasing attack on and by leadership, the findings further indicated that the defended leaders should be aware of the conscious and unconscious impact and outcome of language. Language use is useful as a lens to explore, diagnose and raise awareness, because the unconscious reveals itself through language as speech and image, and through the language of relations and relatedness and the language of action and omission. Since leaders operate in a colliquated space, both at individual and systemic level (i.e. as collisions), leadership anxiety could be elevated, resulting in the access of the dark side of language use. However, when these collisions occur, leadership anxiety could be reduced when the leader enters the reflective or potential space by accessing the relational value of language use. The utility value of the systems psychodynamic model was subsequently also confirmed. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / D. Com. (Industrial and Organisational Psychology)

TPP的地緣政治與地緣經濟因素: 台灣加入TPP戰略思考之研究 / The Geopolitical and Geoeconomic Factors: Taiwan's Strategic Calculation to Join TPP

詹雅涵 Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis focuses on strategy of U.S. Pivot to Asia Pacific region and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) with the theory of state interest to analyze how the U.S. manages the establishment and operation of TPP on the consideration of the strong economic growth of Asia-Pacific region and the status of rising China as the second largest economic entity around the world. During the process, what is the strategy of the U.S. and China? On the other hand, under the domestic support of two major parties in Taiwan to join TPP, Kuomintang (KMT) and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), on the way to join TPP, what diplomatic strategies will Taiwan confront when it deals with China and the U.S.? In other words, what are the pros and cons for Taiwan to join TPP? Based on historical analysis, document analysis, this thesis found three major findings: 1. The increase of power of Rising China will enhance the opportunity of Taiwan to join TPP As China’s state power increases, the U.S. will adopt much more serious “Containment” strategies. Under this circumstance, the role of Taiwan will become much more important. Therefore, under the intense U.S. containment strategies, the opportunities for Taiwan to join TPP will become higher. 2. Open market to the region is the choice for sea-island economic Taiwan Taiwan belongs to sea-island economic, which relies on export on the development of industry, and China becomes the major export partner of Taiwan. Facing the challenge of South Korea and Japan which have signed FTA with China, Taiwan has to engage in a more active way to the open market to avoid isolation on the competition of Chinese market. 3. TPP and FTA are the definite result of globalization Among all kinds of regional agreements, zero tax barrier and simplification of administration process on document and custom examination are the keys to break the obstacle between country and country. Moreover, by doing so countries could break the limitation on protecting the local products, which further fosters the M shape competition among the regional economic development between the strong and weak countries.

Problems and results in partially ordered sets, graphs and geometry

Biro, Csaba 26 June 2008 (has links)
The thesis consist of three independent parts. In the first part, we investigate the height sequence of an element of a partially ordered set. Let $x$ be an element of the partially ordered set $P$. Then $h_i(x)$ is the number of linear extensions of $P$ in which $x$ is in the $i$th lowest position. The sequence ${h_i(x)}$ is called the height sequence of $x$ in $P$. Stanley proved in 1981 that the height sequence is log-concave, but no combinatorial proof has been found, and Stanley's proof does not reveal anything about the deeper structure of the height sequence. In this part of the thesis, we provide a combinatorial proof of a special case of Stanley's theorem. The proof of the inequality uses the Ahlswede--Daykin Four Functions Theorem. In the second part, we study two classes of segment orders introduced by Shahrokhi. Both classes are natural generalizations of interval containment orders and interval orders. We prove several properties of the classes, and inspired by the observation, that the classes seem to be very similar, we attempt to find out if they actually contain the same partially ordered sets. We prove that the question is equivalent to a stretchability question involving certain sets of pseudoline arrangements. We also prove several facts about continuous universal functions that would transfer segment orders of the first kind into segments orders of the second kind. In the third part, we consider the lattice whose elements are the subsets of ${1,2,ldots,n}$. Trotter and Felsner asked whether this subset lattice always contains a monotone Hamiltonian path. We make progress toward answering this question by constructing a path for all $n$ that satisfies the monotone properties and covers every set of size at most $3$. This portion of thesis represents joint work with David M.~Howard.

Immigration detention, containment fantasies and the gendering of political status in Australia

Phillips, Kristen January 2009 (has links)
This thesis is about border politics, in more than one sense. It looks at the recent period of anxiety about the control of Australian national borders (approximately, from the late 1990s until the 2007 Federal election), and attempts to understand how certain assumptions about women as potential reproductive bodies permeated biopolitical discourses in Australian national culture during this period. I employ the term ‘containment’ in order to make sense of this cultural moment. With reference to the work of theorists of modernity such as Michel Foucault and Zygmunt Bauman, I argue that containment is a key discourse in modern cultures—a way of thinking and speaking about confinement, control, management and order. It structures how we think about the management of populations and is a central part of the justification for the confinement of problem populations by modern political authorities. As such, then, it describes the ways in which the use of immigration detention for unlawful non-citizen asylum seekers has been thought about and accepted as reasonable in Australian national culture. / However, a discourse of containment has also been central to the thinking about gendered bodies in modernity, in particular to assumptions about the control of women’s bodies. The assumptions about the containment of women in the modern gender order are directly linked to ideas about political status, citizenship and sovereignty in modern nation-states. Drawing on Giorgio Agamben’s notion of ‘bare life’—the life that is excluded from the protections of citizenship and thus left unprotected from violence—I attempt to make sense of the connections between the immigration detention camp as a site where the modern state exerts control over the life of the nation, and that modern state’s attempts to control reproductive and reproducing bodies. The reducing of certain people to the status of bare life is, then, a gendered process. Women and men are stripped of political status in different ways because they are assumed to have, or potentially have, different kinds of political status. / I therefore consider how ideas about women as reproductive bodies were integral to the discourse and practices of containment which underpinned the use of immigration detention in Australia. These ideas were important at a number of levels. Firstly, ideas about women as reproductive bodies infused the thinking about national borders, border control and the management of national reproduction. Secondly, a racially inflected discourse about ‘women and children’ was of central importance in shaping the ways in which male and female asylum seekers in immigration detention were treated. In the techniques used to control and manage gendered asylum-seeking bodies, key modern assumptions about women as reproductive bodies, the family, sovereignty and violence are revealed. Furthermore, I argue that many popular culture texts which attempt to make sense of, or critique, Australian national border politics have reinforced the same gendered ideas about containment, the same naturalised assumptions about the reproduction of the nation, which underpinned exclusionist border politics and the use of immigration detention. Examining the intersection of gendered and national discourses of containment in national border politics reveals the gendered violence which infuses the modern social order.

A influência do discurso médico no poder punitivo / The influence of medical speech in the punitive power

Ricardo Tadeu Penitente Genelhú 17 November 2010 (has links)
This dissertation discusses the relationship between the medicine, the psychiatry, the punitive power and the Penal Law, as well the influence that the ones speech produces in the other, and vice versa. Argues the idea that the medicine is an spectacule of power that, with the punitive power, and interacting with it, and above, the individual, invades and apropriates of their body for, using it as instrument of political domination, disciplin it according with the convenience, mainly, of the hygiene and, in that spurious relationship with the punitive power, diferenciating and controlling it social and criminally. Maintains, even, that, despite the union not have been intentional, the State saw in medicine an instrument to enforce its own power, while medicine saw in State the suport for its propagation, despite Medicine and State have converged, but also diverged, sometimes, tactically and strategically, because not allways the both powers recognized the value of the alliance that they have just established. So, defends the thesis that the State accepted the medicalization of its public actions and admitted the political value of the medicine actions, and with the advantage for both that, sharing the power, they won. It means that, the medicine, more fast and more appropriate to the relevant problems presented, helped the State to interfere in the body, insofar the State, with its hegemonical power, opened gaps into its own body to the remaining parasitic of the other onte. And, for keeping its right of speech, argues that the medicine reinvented frequentlly a necessity for present itself as the only solution, getting it by the presentation of one dominial eloquent rhetoric, but, mainlly, technified, or, inaccessible to the dominated. With it, the discipline, the control and the repression of the individual, penal and medically, were ready, because, Law and Medicine, that one with legislation, and this one with drugs, together, dominated and still dominate the destinys of the individual, and collectivity. Demonstrate, more, that the hygienists never stopped their functions. And, finally, the penal principles must, independently of the given qualification, allways stops the punitive power.
