Success factors in an introductory programming course in a non-CS major

Alnervik, Tilda, Ma, Gerui January 2020 (has links)
Purpose – The contradiction of the increased demand for IT specialists and the decrease of the enrollment in programming courses at universities worldwide has been discussed over the years. To tackle the problem, researchers and teachers in computing education have investigated various success factors in introductory programming courses, mostly within the context of computer science. This paper focuses on the investigation of success factors for students that are not majoring in computer science (non-CS) in an introductory programming course, to report on the results of student's performance and analysis of the most relevant success factors, also provide suggestions that could be considered for the course design and teaching method.   Method – The methods used to carry out the study are a survey with 36 participants, conducted before the start of an introductory programming course, and qualitative interviews conducted with twelve students after the end of the course. The interviews were then analysed thematically to find common patterns for five success factors between the students with different grades. The success factors that were examined are math background, previous programming experience, comfort level, motivation and attribution to success.   Findings – Math background could not be proved as a success factor in this study due to the lack of a standardized assessment of the students’ math levels. Previous programming experience could be regarded as a success factor but not as dominant as the success factor motivation, which has shown clear patterns in the data. Comfort level could be seen as one of the success factors as well, as most of the data in this study support this conclusion. Lastly, attribution to success as a success factor could not be supported by this study; the qualitative data showed variety which makes it hard to draw a conclusion directly.   Implications – The study suggest increasing the motivation for the non-CS students in introductory programming by combining programming with other subjects in the programme. The lecturer could customize the course for students with different interests so they could select a path and adapt the knowledge to their needs. Bridging courses and various forms of mentoring are also recommended to offer.   Limitations – The time frame of the study limited the amount of data that could be collected. The study was conducted with students from only one university and one non-CS programme, with a small data sample for analysis, which is limiting in the way the results can be generalized.

Applying a Strategic Sustainable Development Lens to Supplier Network Collaboration

Gren, Kristina, Lotfalian, Ashkan, Ahmadi, Hassibullah January 2020 (has links)
A company cannot be more sustainable than its supply chain. Given their complexity and the need for collaborative, strategic action for sustainability across supplier networks this research takes a systems perspective to answer, “How can a Strategic Sustainable Development (SSD) lens support supplier network collaboration towards sustainability?”.The application of the SSD lens includes mapping barriers and enablers to collaboration for sustainability found in literature and a case company along with the Five-Level Model (5LM) to which we add complex adaptive system elements. Based on this a thematic analysis of the barriers and enablers is performed paper presents results of the 5LM and thematic analysis, finding that taking an SSD perspective shows interconnections across the multiple enablers and barriers to collaboration. The challenges encountered during 5LM along with the results implications for the Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM) academic field and practitioners are discussed. We conclude that the variety and complexity of barriers and enablers for collaboration make it important to approach sustainability strategically across the supplier network. The SSD perspective supports collaboration for sustainability by providing an opportunity to examine it from a systems perspective and to formulate prescriptive considerations for the case company and guiding questions for SSCM practitioners.

[en] METAPHOR AND POETIC IMAGINATION IN C. S. LEWIS S CRITICAL WORK / [pt] METÁFORA E IMAGINAÇÃO POÉTICA NA OBRA CRÍTICA DE C. S. LEWIS

JOSÉ LUIZ COELHO RANGEL JUNIOR 09 November 2020 (has links)
[en] The present study aims to analyze, from a specific standpoint, The Pilgrim s Regress (1933), first fiction book by the Irish writer C. S. Lewis (1898-1963). This work is often related to the author s conversion experience to Christianity, and this study aims further interpretations beyond mere allegorical autobiography. One of its objectives is to show how Lewis writes his obscure allegory within an important debate about the nature of language, after the World War I (1914-18). Then, the author presents, in his narrative, ideas which are commonly expressed inside scholarly discussions in Oxford and Cambridge and scarcely noted by the unwary reader. One of the most important post-war aspects was exactly the shift on how to understand language. Although there was no sophisticated media as the World War II s – television, or radio for instance – newspapers, books, pamphlets, images and songs were used to convey war propaganda, in the WWI. Therefore, the idea behind a combat fought not only with arms but also trough language took place among those who lived that period in time and who decided to study it. Certainly, many questions could be raised about language objectivity as source of reliable information and its use in the context of literature, when the underlying dangers of such way to handle language is exposed. In The Pilgrim’s Regress one could see the author positioning himself before this controversy about the nature of language, situated between WWI and WWII.

Lighting Evaluation and Design for the Stockholm Metro System Based on Current Models for Non-visual Responses

Liu, Tong January 2020 (has links)
Light has a wide and profound non-visual impact on the human body. It is related to the suppression or synthesis of a hormone called melatonin which regulates the human circadian clock. In Nordic countries like Sweden, lack of natural light in winter may lead to negative health effects such as circadian disorders or depression. At the same time, the underground metro system in Stockholm carries more than one million passengers on a weekday. The lighting in the train carriage may have distinct circadian effects on the passengers. The paper takes the metro system in Stockholm as an example, calculates the non-visual effects of the artificial lighting in the train according to Equivalent Melanopic Lux (EML), Circadian Stimulus (CS) and Melanopic Equivalent Daylight Illuminance (M-EDI) Models, compares with current guidance and suggestions, considers the daylighting conditions of Stockholm, and proposes a new design solution with adjustable LEDs to achieve a better healthful circadian lighting result.

Untersuchung der elektronischen Struktur quasi-zweidimensionaler Einlagerungsverbindungen

Danzenbächer, Steffen 13 November 2001 (has links) (PDF)
Subject of the present thesis are investigations of selected low-dimensional layered lattice systems, with the principal goal to study the electronic structure in relation to intercalation experiments. Single-crystalline graphite-, TiSe2 - and TaSe2- samples were analyzed by angle-resolved photoemission, Fermi- and isoenergy-surface measurements, and low energy electron diffraction experiments before and after intercalation. U, Eu, Gd, and Cs were used as materials for the intercalation process. The experimental results were compared with theoretical LDA-LCAO band-structure calculations and with simulations in the framework of a single-impurity Anderson model. In addition to the influence of different numbers of valence electrons from intercalated atoms, questions concerning the localization of 4f and 5f states and changes in the dimensionality of the compounds due to the intercalation process are discussed. Investigations of the temperature dependent formation of charge density waves in 1T-TaSe2 complete this work.

Effective and efficient visual description based on local binary patterns and gradient distribution for object recognition

Zhu, Chao 03 April 2012 (has links)
[...] / This thesis is dedicated to the problem of machine-based visual object recognition, which has become a very popular and important research topic in recent years because of its wide range of applications such as image/video indexing and retrieval, security access control, video monitoring, etc. Despite a lot of e orts and progress that have been made during the past years, it remains an open problem and is still considered as one of the most challenging problems in computer vision community, mainly due to inter-class similarities and intra-class variations like occlusion, background clutter, changes in viewpoint, pose, scale and illumination. The popular approaches for object recognition nowadays are feature & classifier based, which typically extract visual features from images/videos at first, and then perform the classification using certain machine learning algorithms based on the extracted features. Thus it is important to design good visual description, which should be both discriminative and computationally efficient, while possessing some properties of robustness against the previously mentioned variations. In this context, the objective of this thesis is to propose some innovative contributions for the task of visual object recognition, in particular to present several new visual features / descriptors which effectively and efficiently represent the visual content of images/videos for object recognition. The proposed features / descriptors intend to capture the visual information from different aspects. Firstly, we propose six multi-scale color local binary pattern (LBP) features to deal with the main shortcomings of the original LBP, namely deficiency of color information and sensitivity to non-monotonic lighting condition changes. By extending the original LBP to multi-scale form in different color spaces, the proposed features not only have more discriminative power by obtaining more local information, but also possess certain invariance properties to different lighting condition changes. In addition, their performances are further improved by applying a coarse-to-fine image division strategy for calculating the proposed features within image blocks in order to encode spatial information of texture structures. The proposed features capture global distribution of texture information in images. Secondly, we propose a new dimensionality reduction method for LBP called the orthogonal combination of local binary patterns (OC-LBP), and adopt it to construct a new distribution-based local descriptor by following a way similar to SIFT.Our goal is to build a more efficient local descriptor by replacing the costly gradient information with local texture patterns in the SIFT scheme. As the extension of our first contribution, we also extend the OC-LBP descriptor to different color spaces and propose six color OC-LBP descriptors to enhance the discriminative power and the photometric invariance property of the intensity-based descriptor. The proposed descriptors capture local distribution of texture information in images. Thirdly, we introduce DAISY, a new fast local descriptor based on gradient distribution, to the domain of visual object recognition.
