Ethno-ornithology and conservation : traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) of birds among the Mushere and the conservation of the Dulu forest in Mushere, Plateau state, Nigeria

Pam, Grace A. B. January 2017 (has links)
This research was aimed at determining the ethno-ornithological knowledge of three Mushere villages close to the Dulu Forest, Nigeria to determine whether this might hold potential for developing a local conservation programme to protect the forest. The conservation objective of the research was aimed at determining the drivers of forest degradation, and possible means of mitigation. Using a mixed method approach, quantitative/qualitative data were collected in two years from different demographics (men, women, children, age differentials, occupation, urbanization). Oral interviews, semi-structured interviews, picture elicitation tasks, free-listing exercises and focus group discussions were employed in the data collection process. The findings revealed a relatively low ethno-ornithological knowledge, and a general indifference (ornitho-apatheia) towards birds. Knowledge transmission was predominantly through oral means while TEK acquisition was mainly through vertical and horizontal methods. While adults perceived birds as not valuable, children generally perceived birds as valuable. Cultural utilization and ecological salience were the main drivers of bird naming and knowledge. However, there was a high valuing of the Dulu forest, with the main drivers of the forest degradation being timber extraction. Overall, I concluded that the indifference of the Mushere towards birds revealed a lack of cultural appreciation of birds, leading to little TEK of birds, insufficient to encourage the use of TEK of birds in the conservation of the Dulu forest, and the use of birds as flagship domain for promoting conservation. However, a sustained approach towards encouraging birding activities could improve the perception of birds. I therefore suggest using an ecosystem approach in the conservation of the Dulu forest. Engaging the locals in dialogue, establishing a leadership structure for the management of the Dulu forest, providing alternative means of livelihoods are suggested as ways of mitigating the degradation of the Dulu forest.

Uso de dados de comportamento em análise comparativa de narrativas de Museus de História Natural: uma abordagem filogenética / the use of behaviour data in comparative analysis of narratives in natural history museums: a phylogenetic approach

Luciana Roberta Victor Machado 21 September 2016 (has links)
The present study was a comparative analysis of narratives in natural history museums in order to identify and quantify the use of information on animal behavior in evolutionary context. An initial step was to gather character to prepare a data matrix where they were coded. The textual information was obtained through images (photos and videos) of the panels and other narrative elements or text files transferred by the researched institutions. The photos were assembled according to the order suggested in the exhibition and organized in word file. The texts were transcribed and organized into word file to be analyzed. The current study contributes to a new area of research providing new set of characters (ethological, expographic and thematic) to establish standards of approach for the characters in their different forms. Phylogenetic cladistic methodology was used to establish relations between the narratives of exhibition using behavioral characters. The methodology was chosen to present relevant results for non-organismic systems. In order to become applicable, the system only needs to be subject to the Darwinian algorithm where an information system (genetic or symbolic) which shows hereditary variability (transmitted), given enough time, will be subject to the selection process that results in the adaptation of the system (narratives) to new environmental pressures (cultural). The results from the phylogenetic analysis showed low frequency of information in the approach to the subject of behavior in exhibitions in the natural history museums. On the other hand, an increase in the complexity of the resourses used in the approach to behavioral issues was observed along the branches of the tree found. This complexity is due both to the scope and theme of the exhibition about the resources applied in their executions. Thus, not surprisingly, the AMNH Darwin exhibition (with its wealth of resources) and Ethology of SDM (with its wealth of behavioral information) appear in this study as sister group within the more derived branch of the tree.

The main objective of this study is to understand part of the mechanisms that guarantee medical system's cultural evolution in three social groups with different characteristics. In the first chapter, an analytical description of those Cultural Evolutionary Theory's assumptions, its review and main investigative questions are shown. Still a discussion about research which were concern in understand local ecological knowledge is presented as well as an attempt to attach Cultural Evolutionary Theory and Ethnobotany. In the second chapter, a review about the main methods used to evaluate cultural systems' temporal and special developments by analyzing its principal contributions and limitations is exhibited. By assuming that medical systems are illness factual episodesbased, it is argued that construction of methodologies which are used in knowledge transmission's investigation must be based in the concept of episodic memory. The third chapter presents a general description of cultural and physical contexts from those three actual research partner communities and also highlights characteristics which allow those communities insertion in a social and environmental variability gradient. The fourth chapter analyzes plants local system from a structural point of view and argues that this set of knowledge has an episodic nature. This specific dynamics builds mechanisms that guarantee local knowledge adaptedness, specially for allowing future-focused behaviors which guarantee a better behavioral adequacy. Finally, the fifth chapter analyzes knowledge individual production and transmission of information in the three investigated groups. It was hipothesized that situations within a greater social and environmental variability would stimulate knowledge production and the horizontal way of transmission. However, these two hypothesis were not confirmed by the presented data. It is believed that the medicinal plants dynamics of use, which is based in using security, influences the transmission of knowledge by "how", "when", "whom" and "in what context" it happens. The last chapter, using cladistic analyses, evaluated if different strategies of knowledge transmission produce cognitive systems with different structures. It was found that transfer routes influences the distribution of knowledge but not diversity. Vertical transmission is the process responsible for spatial dynamics of local knowledge of plants.

Cronologia e Variabilidade: Os Ceramistas Tupiguarani da Zona da Mata Mineira e Complexo Lagunar de Araruama / Chronology and Variability: The Tupiguarani Potters of the Zona da Mata Mineira and Complexo Lagunar de Araruama

Leandro Elias Canaan Mageste 13 March 2017 (has links)
The aim of this work is to promote the comparison on two archaeological contexts regarding the occupation by Tupiguarani potters. It is the Zona da Mata mineira region, particularly the sites researched by MAEA-UFJF team; and the Complexo Lagunar de Araruama, on the coast of Rio de Janeiro, studied by researchers at the Museu Nacional/ UFRJ. On the one hand, these areas have sites with seemingly similar material culture compared to paints and plastics surface finishes, inserted in the same chronological period of settlement. On the other, some ethno-historical references reveal the existence of possible connections between local groups Tupinambá located on the coast and inland in the early years of contacts with the colonizers, specifically in the area of influence of the delimited territorial part. For all intents, the picture outlined above sets up an appropriate scenario for the testing of hypotheses relating to cultural transmission processes, related style and function concepts offered by Dunnell (1978). In practice, it fomented the performing a variety of tests focused specifically on the types of the clay paste, rim and finishing plastic surface and painting. In the end, it was possible to demonstrate the links between the sites analyzed in time and space, besides offering diachronic explanations for the variability and similarities detected, which were gestated in the Evolutionary Archaeology scope.

Selection, sex and sun : social transmission of a sexual preference in Drosophila melanogaster / Selection, sex and fun : transmission sociale d'une préférence sexuelle chez la drosophile (Drosophila melanogaster)

Dagaeff, Anne-Cécile 20 October 2015 (has links)
Mate choice is a major fitness-affecting decision in sexually reproducing organisms. A form of mate choice is mate copying, in which females choose potential mates by copying the mate choice of conspecifics. While many studies documented mate copying in vertebrates, little is known about this behaviour in invertebrates. In this thesis, I studied mate copying in Drosophila melanogaster females. I showed that female flies can build a sexual preference for one male characteristic after witnessing a single mate choice event and that the efficiency of mate copying correlates with air pressure and its variations. Then I studied the characteristics of mate copying to see whether a preference for one type of male can be transmitted into the population. Finally I tried to find some molecules that could be involved in this behaviour. These results indicate that fruit flies can express complex behaviour, which can potentially lead to cultural transmission, reproductive isolation and speciation.

Exposure to Biased Language: The Role of Linguistic Abstraction in the Transmission, Maintenance, and Formation of Beliefs

Collins, Katherine Anne January 2015 (has links)
Language plays an indispensable role in the transmission, maintenance, and formation of culturally shared beliefs. Yet beliefs about groups, in particular, are shared despite the existence of prohibitive norms that act to inhibit their expression. This apparent incongruity suggests that cultural beliefs become shared through linguistic means other than explicit expression. In support of this, the linguistic bias paradigm proposes that linguistic bias is the implicit and unintentional expression of beliefs through the differential use of linguistic abstraction (Franco & Maass, 1996; Maass, 1999; Maass, Salvi, Arcuri, & Semin, 1989), as defined by the Linguistic Category Model (Semin & Fiedler, 1988). According to this paradigm, linguistic bias not only reveals the speakers’ privately held beliefs but also transmits these beliefs to recipients, leading to belief sharedness. The consequences of exposure to linguistic bias, however, have yet to be shown and this is the aim of the present research program. The first study focuses on belief transmission, by determining if there is a direct causal effect from linguistic abstraction to individual impression formation. Results show that biased language transmits information about individuals but the communication context, specifically whom the message is about, is also important. Given this, it is likely that the content of the message will also affect the reception of biased language. The second study thus focuses on belief maintenance, by considering the relative effects of different levels of linguistic abstraction on pre-existing beliefs. Results were inconclusive, but may have been affected by methodological limitations. The third study addresses these limitations while focusing on belief formation, by measuring the impact of biased language in the absence of pre-existing beliefs. Recipients, in general, formed beliefs that corresponded to the biased language to which they were exposed. Together, these studies suggest that linguistic bias plays a role in belief sharedness as a mechanism through which cultural beliefs are transmitted and formed. Linguistic bias, however, must be understood within the specific communication context, which also independently affects reception.

Problems of translating the names of Chinese dishes into Russian

Zhao, D. January 2021 (has links)
The relevance of the work. The importance of researching the principles, methods, and strategies for translating the names of Chinese dishes into Russian in recent years has attracted the attention of an increasing number of scientists and specialized academic institutions in connection with the globalization of the world economy. This type of cultural communication activity involves not only the transformation of linguistic symbols but also the integration of cultures. While language is part of the culture, the overseas development, and growth of China's foodservice industry is an important part of global economic activity. The Russian translation of the names of Chinese dishes is no longer a purely literary translation of the text. In a sense, this should be external communication activity or even a full-fledged foreign economic activity. The quality of the Russian translation of the names of Chinese dishes in many ways directly affects the scale and effectiveness of the development of the Chinese catering industry in Russia. However, due to cultural differences and other reasons, there are many difficulties in translating the names of Chinese dishes into Russian. This requires the use of the necessary techniques for translating the names of Chinese dishes into Russian so that the translated names fully reflect the regional and national characteristics of Chinese cuisine. Based on the research of Chinese translator Bao Huinan and British translator Taylor on the translation of dish names, this article summarizes the problems of the translation of Chinese dish names into Russian. The author of this article attempts to find a solution to the problems encountered in translating Chinese dish names into Russian on a theoretical basis. According to translators Carl and Taylor, finding a suitable translation method according to different translation situations is the best strategy. Regarding the cultural differences encountered in translating Chinese dish names into Russian, it is recommended that translators consider and study these two strategies dialectically, historically rather than statically and absolutely. According to the above-mentioned principles, we propose to solve the problem of translation of Chinese dish names into Russian and methods to translate dish names.

A Mediated Presence : Uncovering Nietzsche in Art History from its Foundations to Contemporary Anglo-American Curricula

Vansier, Natalie 08 1900 (has links)
Nietzsche’s philosophy has played an active role in many recurring art historical debates that have permeated the discipline since its inception, yet there exists no systematic analysis of his impact. His influence has been mediated through various interlocutors, art historical and other, that have framed these discussions, while using his writings as an intellectual backdrop to their own ideas. This thesis attempts to show that Nietzsche’s engagement with art history has been submerged or overshadowed by an emphasis on the mediators of his thought with little direct engagement with his work, particularly so in the Anglo-American context. The consequence of this is that his genealogical importance for many of the founders of the discipline is left unacknowledged; hence, his actually potent presence is translated as an absence or oversight. In order to demonstrate this, we explore the Nietzschean heritage that informed the works of art historians like Jacob Burckhardt and Aby Warburg, and that of philosophers and writers who have marked the art historical discipline (particularly so with the surge of “French Theory” in Anglo-American art history as of the late 1970s): Martin Heidegger, Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze and Georges Bataille. Once we have identified some of the trajectories on which his ideas have gained relevancy for art history, we look at the potential reasons for their subsequent occlusion. In order to do this, we begin by examining the evolving methodologies in historiography so as to situate his contribution to this domain of study and see where these reflections have intersected with those of art historians who either broadened or reshaped the methods and analytical structures of their own discipline. We finally compare Nietzsche’s 'art' to the “art of art history” (Preziosi 2009) and determine whether these two expressions can be bridged or whether there is a fundamental incompatibility that may explain the discrepancy between his treatment of art and that which concerned art history at the moment of its contemporaneous institutionalisation.
