THE IMPACT OF CULTURE IN AN ERA OF PARTIAL GLOBALIZATION ON STANDARD BUSINESS PRACTICESFlynn, Colleen Evadne 17 June 2009 (has links)
In this age of globalization, or more specifically, partial globalization, the significance of cultural shifts in various parts of the world, is considerable. In consideration of cultural convergence and divergence, it must be investigated whether or not cultures are gaining more similarities and less differences (convergence) due to globalization and whether or not standard business practices will emerge as a result.
An adaptation of the Dorfman and Howell (1988) survey was used to provide a better understanding and comparison of the special conditions that characterize business practices of Jamaicans living in Jamaica, and Jamaicans living in the U.S.A. or whose behavior have been impacted by the U.S. culture.
The results indicate that there are no significant differences in the areas of power distance, uncertainty avoidance, masculinity and paternalism which suggest strength of the Jamaican culture. However there was some evidence of crossvergence or possibly divergence as there was a significant difference in individualism between the native Jamaican and the global Jamaican. The apparent shift in individualism, which is in alignment with Hofstede's (1986) belief that as a result of westernization and teaching in a multinational classroom a shift in individualism is possible, needs to be further investigated in light of the relatively small sample size used in the study. There was no difference between the native male Jamaican and the global male Jamaican in all the five cultural dimensions.
This research provides students, managers, business leaders and entrepreneurs with information that can help business practices, through the better understanding of cultural orientation of the NATIVE Jamaican (Jamaicans living in Jamaica) and the GLOBAL Jamaican (Jamaicans living in the U.S.A. for an extended period or who have been exposed to the U.S. culture for an extended period of time, leading to improved business and economic performance.
The researcher suggests further research utilizing a larger sample size to investigate not only how demographic factors such as gender, age, and educational level affect cultural orientation but also to explore the effects of economic ties, family ties, cable television and internet usage on the cultural orientation among the native and global Jamaican and whether convergence, crossvergence and divergence occurs. Also, it is worth undertaking a study of the observed shift in greater individualism for the global Jamaican to discover whether the change is of any permanence and the contributing factors to the differences to these values.

Understanding CSR in the textile industry in a middle-income country : Stories from future managers in Sri LankaPreiksaite, Samantha, Levehag, Tora January 2020 (has links)
Production has relocated to the Eastern world, whilst consumption is dominating the Western world. Taking into consideration the cultural differences between East and West sanctions a problem, as it is identified that corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices require adaptation to the different cultural contexts. For this reason, it is of interest to study how the values in a middle-income country influence the attitudes that are formed towards CSR to further contextualise the need for adaptation of CSR. To accomplish the aim to the fullest extent, and to adequately form an understanding of how the values influence the attitudes towards CSR in a middle-income country, this study takes place in Colombo, Sri Lanka. As Sri Lanka is a country that has a prevalent textile industry, along with a strong focus on CSR activities and ethical production, augments the choice for the enactment of this study. In the essence of this, the encompassing purpose of this study is as follows: To illustrate how cultural values influence attitudes regarding CSR practices from a future managerial perspective in the setting of Sri Lanka, and if the cultural factors play an important role in the formation of values that inhere to CSR. The methodology of the research consists of focus groups that implicate a vignette technique that builds on the theoretical chapter. Five focus groups were performed, which comprised of fifteen students in total, all current fashion students within textiles, design and marketing at the University of Academy of Design (AOD) located in Colombo, Sri Lanka. By using the vignette technique enables the authors to compose ten scenarios, building on the concepts of CSR in where Carroll’s pyramid is of significance, along with cultural dimensions that are represented by Hofstede and Schwartz. Through these scenarios, the authors explore the attitudes of future managers, namely students, in their attempt to act upon ethical dilemmas. Thereafter, thematic analysis was used to extract four themes from the participants’ insights. These themes add up to the Sri Lankan Business Mindset, Hierarchy, Level of Recognition and Who is Responsible. The findings of this study suggest that in an attempt to approach CSR in a manner which strives to shape the values towards ethical reasoning, it is essential to take into consideration the four actors that are identified as responsible – namely the government, society, company, and individual.

Stress and performance in uncertainty-avoiding individuals: an introductory literature reviewStowers, Kimberly 01 May 2013 (has links)
Uncertainty avoidance as a cultural construct has been known to affect worker stress and performance in organizations, but a review of these findings has not been done up until this point. In effort to clarify the relationship between uncertainty avoidance and stress and performance, a comprehensive literature search was performed. Findings from articles on this topic have been presented. In addition, organizational practices for accommodating uncertainty avoidance and other cultural dimensions have been explored. This review shows that uncertainty avoidance appears to be linked to higher stress, while its relationship to performance appears to depend on other factors. Best practices for accommodating uncertainty avoidance tend to include enhanced communication and structure. Ideas for future research on this topic are discussed.

A metodologia utilizada foi a aplicação de um questionário da Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, traduzido para o português, às lideranças administrativas e assistenciais de hospitais acreditados (tanto pela metodologia da Organização Nacional de Acreditação quanto pela metodologia da Joint Commission International), no Estado de São Paulo. Também identificou-se a freqüência com que os erros são reportados e se as respostas aos erros cometidos são punitivas ou não. / Patient safety is one of the pillars of a healthcare organization. The aim of this study was to know the opinions of the hospital staff about the safety culture dimensions. Concepts of accreditation, quality, safety culture and patient safety are approached. The methodology consisted of a questionnaire application prepared for Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, translated to portuguese, to the medical and nonmedical leaderships of accredited hospitals (by the methodology of the Organização Nacional de Acreditação and by the methodology of the Joint Commission International), in São Paulo state. The frequency of error reporty was also identified, as well as whether the response to error is punitive or not.

This dissertation investigates managerial leadership and its cultural foundations in Kenya.
It discusses the theoretical underpinnings of culturally contingent leadership theories, and
examines Sub-Saharan African leadership through existing literature, cultural metaphors,
and qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The study replicates the Global
Leadership and Organisational Behaviour Effectiveness (GLOBE) methodologies with
267 respondents – managers in the finance and food processing sectors, and the civic
sector (education and health). The literature review focuses on leadership issues
impeding socio-economic development, complexities such as ethnic heterogeneity,
colonial history, customary practices, instability in governance, conflict, corruption, and
poverty. The cultural domain is also examined in terms of ethno-linguistic groups and
major historical and geo-political influences on these groups. Additional aspects of
culture that pose persistent problems to Kenyan leadership are explored: paternalism and
patronage, and the legacy of entitlement and bureaucracy –– negative influences on workrelated
relations, and managerial and political leadership. Findings on organisational
culture and societal culture indicate that Kenyan values and practices are not congruent,
thereby creating a unique profile of Kenyan leader attributes and leadership styles. The
study identifies Bwana Kubwa (Big Boss) managerial leadership as a norm, political
leadership as “a dirty game,” and an “inspirational idealist” as the preferred leader.
Lastly, survey results for Kenya are compared against GLOBE dimensions of culture and

Corporate culture is believed to be integral to organisational success and sustainability. This research study was conducted according to a humanistic, positive psychology and an open systems paradigm in order to examine the theoretical relationship between organisational culture and organisational commitment.
The quantitative measuring instruments used for data collection were the Harrison and Stokes organisational culture questionnaire (OCQ) and Allen and Meyer’s organisational commitment scale (OCS). The empirical study involved respondents from a selected IT company in the KwaZulu-Natal region.
This study revealed that there was no significant relationship between organisational culture and organisational commitment. However, there was a difference between the existing and preferred power culture as well as the existing and preferred role culture dimensions.
The main recommendation for this study is that the selected IT company should set stretch targets with a focus on common vision, purpose and company values, with a strong emphasis on creating meaningful rewards for top performers at both individual and team level. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M.
