Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy Thin Films and Nanostructures for Future Recording Media ApplicationsGanss, Fabian 18 November 2022 (has links)
The increasing demand for nearline storage capacity in data centers calls for a continued enhancement in hard disk drive recording density far beyond one terabit per square inch. The thermal stability limit forces the drive manufacturers to develop new concepts in order to achieve this in the long term. Potential solutions are microwave-assisted magnetic recording (MAMR), heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) and bit-patterned media (BPM).
A simple example of BPM based on sputter-deposited Co/Pd multilayers and prepatterned substrates at hypothetical recording densities up to one terabit per square inch was studied by magnetic force microscopy (MFM). This system achieved promising results at lower densities, but an actual application for data storage, especially at one terabit per square inch and higher densities, requires elaborate optimizations.
For some time now, FePt thin films have attracted much attention as prospective recording layers for high-density magnetic data storage due to their high magnetic anisotropy. The use of FePt films in HAMR is especially promising. This application has been tested successfully by Seagate and its key customers in recent years and is about to be introduced into the nearline hard disk drive market. It requires a tuning of the magnetic properties of FePt, especially of its Curie temperature. The addition of Cu proved to be effective in this regard and can also facilitate the formation of the crucial L10 structure and (001) texture during rapid thermal annealing of sputter-deposited thin films.
Such films were prepared as bilayers of Cu and FePt on Si substrates, annealed for 30 s, and analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and SQUID vibrating sample magnetometry (SQUID-VSM). The influence of large Cu additions on important properties like lattice parameters, mosaicity, magnetic anisotropy and Curie temperature is discussed. The chemical long-range order was calculated from the XRD data, and a dedicated chapter of this thesis covers the most important factors to be considered in such calculations for textured thin films and other samples.
The feasibility of creating patterned Fe-Cu-Pt films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, as needed for a combination of HAMR and BPM, by deposition through a PMMA mask, a lift-off process and subsequent annealing was investigated as well. The results indicate that the chosen approach might not lead to the required (001) texture when the nanostructures are small enough to compete with today's recording densities, so that either a continuous film might need to be etched after annealing or a seed layer might be required to induce the texture.:1. Configurational and Magnetic Interactions in Multicomponent SystemsAlling, Björn January 2010 (has links)
This thesis is a theoretical study of configurational and magnetic interactions in multicomponent solids. These interactions are the projections onto the configurational and magnetic degrees of freedom of the underlying electronic quantum mechanical system, and can be used to model, explain and predict the properties of materials. For example, the interactions govern temperature induced configurational and magnetic order-disorder transitions in Heusler alloys and ternary nitrides. In particular three perspectives are studied. The first is how the interactions can be derived from first-principles calculations at relevant physical conditions. The second is their consequences, like the critical temperatures for disordering, obtained with e.g. Monte Carlo simulations. The third is their origin in terms of the underlying electronic structure of the materials. Intrinsic defects in the half-Heusler system NiMnSb are studied and it is found that low-energy defects do not destroy the important half-metallic property at low concentrations. Deliberate doping of NiMnSb with 3d-metals is considered and it is found that replacing some Ni with extra Mn or Cr creates new strong magnetic interactions which could be beneficial for applications at elevated temperature. A self-consistent scheme to include the effects of thermal expansion and one-electron excitations in the calculation of the magnetic critical temperature is introduced and applied to a study of Ni1−xCuxMnSb. A supercell implementation of the disordered local moments approach is suggested and benchmarked for the treatment of paramagnetic CrN as a disordered magnetic phase. It is found that the orthorhombic-to-cubic phase transition in this nitride can be understood as a first-order magnetic order-disorder transition. The ferromagnetism in Ti1−xCrxN solid solutions, an unusual property in nitrides, is explained in terms of a charge transfer induced change in the Cr-Cr magnetic interactions. Cubic Ti1−xAlxN solid solutions displays a complex and concentration dependent phase separation tendency. A unified cluster expansion method is presented that can be used to simulate the configurational thermodynamics of this system. It is shown that short range clustering do influence the free energy of mixing but only slightly change the isostructural phase diagram as compared to mean-field estimates.

Furthermore, we sought to understand the difficulties faced in teaching in French schools of that period, we sought to also to understand what these scientists believed to be the ideal science teaching method and the influence of positivist ideas in these discussions. We analyzed in particular the role of Co-operative Education of Mme Curie (1907-1908) and the objectives of the group of teachers, including Paul Langevin, which was involved in the discussions on the reform. This work was developed from the analysis of documents filed at the Institut Curie and at Bibliothèque Nationale de France, texts and books written by scholars and scientists, with direct and indirect participation in the reform, records of lectures, articles and manuscripts of the children who participated in the cooperative, as Isabelle Chavannes and Irène Curie / Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar as ideias sobre métodos de ensino de ciências, no início do século XX, defendidas por cientistas de destaque, como Marcellin Berthelot, Paul Langevin e Henri Poincaré e a importante participação desses cientistas na reforma do ensino francês de 1902. Les alliages Fe-Ni sont largement utilisés en raison de leurs propriétés intéressantes fondamentales découlant de la coexistence de l'orde chimique et l'ordre magnétique. L'objectif de ce travail était de comprendre l'influence mutuelle de ces deux mises en ordre sur les propriétés thermodynamiques d'équilibre et la cinétique dans les alliages Permalloy (Ni3Fe). A partir de simulations Monte Carlo et de type Champ Moyen, nous avons mis en évidence l'effet des interactions magnétiques sur la température de transition ordre/désordre et réciproquement, l'influence des interactions chimiques sur la température de Curie. La cinétique de précipitation a été étudiée à partir de l'équation de microdiffusion d'Onsager en utilisant les paramètres déduits de calculs ab-initio. Ces simulations ont montré l'influence des interactions magnétiques sur la formation des particules L12 stable. Les deux types de simulations, thermodynamique et cinétique, ont donc confirmé l'importance de prendre en compte simultanément les interactions magnétiques et chimiques. Les résultats obtenus concordent bien avec les données expérimentales disponibles.

Tailored Properties of Ferromagnetic Thin FilmsWarnicke, Peter January 2008 (has links)
Magnetic thin films and patterned nanostructures have been studied with respect to their magnetic properties using SQUID-magnetometry, magnetic force microscopy, electrical measurements, and micromagnetic calculations. Properties of vortex domain walls, trapped in Permalloy nanowires with artificial constrictions, were investigated experimentally and by numerical calculations. In particular, the geometrical extent and strength of the pinning potential were evaluated. In these wires, long-range vortex domain wall displacement induced by spin polarized alternating currents was obtained numerically at reduced threshold current densities as compared with the direct current case. Due to the asymmetry of the energy potential, the long-range displacement direction is determined by the vortex chirality. Strained FeCo/Pt superlattices with strong perpendicular anisotropy were investigated experimentally. The strain was controlled by varying the thickness of each alternating layer with monolayer precision and was found to have a dominating effect on the total anisotropy. Epitaxial films of the diluted magnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As were studied with focus on how the ferromagnetic transition temperature could be controlled by post-growth annealing. The ferromagnetic transition temperature was enhanced by approximately 85% for a Mn-doping concentration of 6% under certain conditions. A method to manipulate micrometer sized magnetic particles on patterned arrays of elliptical Permalloy microstructures was studied. Controlled motion and separation of the magnetic particles were obtained using applied rotating magnetic fields. The domain structure of the elliptical elements was studied numerically.

The thesis is mainly aimed at their behaviour in the electrical field at various intensity. The method using an osciloscope is selected for measuring. For the main measuring in part of this thesis was produced experimental wafer with five samples which were subsequently mesuared. The VEE PRO program was used for creating of collecting datas for histeresis loop and it’s functionality was checked on wafer with five examples in measuring. During this measuring was also measured electric tension dependence of components of complex permittivity.

Chapter 1.<br />1-Ethynyl-2-phenyltetramethyldisilanes HCºCSiMe2SiMe2C6H4-p-X [X = NMe2(1.1), Me (1.2), H (1.3), Br (1.4), CF3 (1.5)] are accessible from ClSiMe2SiMe2Cl, BrMgC6H4X and HCºCMgBr in a two step Grignard reaction. The crystal structure of 1.1 as determined by single crystal X-ray crystallography exhibits a nearly planar PhNMe2 moiety and an unusual gauche array of the phenyl and the acetylene group with respect to rotation around the Si-Si-bond. Full geometry optimization (B3LYP/6- 31+G**) of the gas phase structures of 1.1 and 1.3 affords minima for the gauche and the trans rotational isomers, both being very close in energy with a rotational barrier of only 3 – 5 kJ/mol. Experimental and calculated (time-dependent DFT B3LYP/TZVP) UV absorption data of 1.1 – 1.5 show pronounced electronic interactions of the HCºC- and the C6H4X p-systems with the central Si-Si bond.<br /><br />Chapter 2.<br />A family of [( 5-Cp*)Ru( 6-arene)]+ (Cp* = C5Me5) sandwich complexes of 1- and 1,4-substituted phenyl and naphthyl systems are described along with the regioselectivities of the reactions under various conditions. Finally, the (h 5-Cp*) Ru+ arenophile was found to act as a gate to the flow of electrons between para-substituted termini. When it is complexed onto the phenyl or A naphthyl ring, the gate is closed. On the contrary, when it is complexed onto the B naphthyl ring, the gate is open.<br /><br />Chapter 3.<br />Regioselective complexation reactions of the organoiron acetylide derivatives (h 2- dppe)(h 5-Cp*)Fe-C C-Ar (Ar = phenyl, 1-naphthyl; dppe = 1,2- bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) with [(h 5-Cp*Ru(CH3CN)3][PF6] to afford heterobimetallic complexes formulated as [(h 2-dppe)(h 5-Cp*)Fe-C C-{(h 6-Ar)Ru(h 5- Cp*)}][PF6], were achieved. In the case of the FeII-RuII 1-naphthyl derivative, the (h 5-Cp*)Ru+ arenophile was complexed both onto the substituted ring and free rings of the acetylide 1-naphthyl linker. The first redox-driven h 6-h 6 inter-ring haptotropic migration of the (h 5-Cp*)Ru+ moeity was shown to occur. Crystal structures of all of the seven new iron acetylenes were resolved, including both haptotropomers of the naphthyl compound.<br /><br />Chapter 4.<br />The diorganoiron [{(h2-dpppe)(h5-Cp*)Fe-CC-}2(1,4-naphthyl)] (4.12) was synthesized in good yield in two steps via the vinylidene, and oxidation led to the mixed valence (MV) and iron(III)-iron(III) species in good to excellent yields. This exhaustive empirical study on the family of complexes 4.12[PF6]n (n = 0,1,2) includes a crystal structure for the case in which n = 2. This work clearly establishes good electronic and magnetic communication between the iron centers across the bis(ethynyl)naphthalene bridge. All empirical measurements of these naphthyl compounds reveal that their properties fall between those of known phenyl and anthracenyl derivatives. In some cases, the naphthyl derivative behaves as an average of the phenyl and anthracenyl complexes. For example, the comproportionation constant of the naphthyl species falls at the midpoint between those for the phenyl and anthracenyl compounds. The same is true for the UV absorption maxima in all three oxidation states (Fe[II]- Fe[II], MV, and Fe[III]- Fe[III]). The large electronic (2043 cm-1) and magnetic (-526 cm-1) coupling constants were determined via NIR spectroscopy and SQUID magnetometry, respectively. As for the heterotrinuclear species, the iron(II) acetylene, 4.14B[PF6] [{Cp*(dppe)Fe-C C}2-(h 6 – [1,4-napthyl])RuCp*](PF6), [Cp* = h 5 - C5Me5; Fe = FeII] was prepared in high yields with an adapted, regioselective synthesis via the trinuclear vinylidene. Complete characterization, including a crystal structure, of this sandwich complex reveals that the arenophile perturbs the organoiron ligand more in the bis(iron) than in the previously reported mono(iron) case.

Theoretical investigation of size effects in multiferroic nanoparticlesAllen, Marc Alexander 05 August 2020 (has links)
Over the last two decades, great progress has been made in the understanding of multiferroic materials, ones where multiple long-range orders simultaneously exist. However, much of the research has focused on bulk systems. If these materials are to be incorporated into devices, they would not be in bulk form, but would be miniaturized, such as in nanoparticle form. Accordingly, a better understanding of multiferroic nanoparticles is necessary. This manuscript examines the multiferroic phase diagram of multiferroic nanoparticles related to system size and surface-induced magnetic anisotropy. There is a particular focus on bismuth ferrite, the room-temperature antiferromagnetic-ferroelectric multiferroic. Theoretical results will be presented which show that at certain sizes, a bistability develops in the cycloidal wavevector. This implies bistability in the ferroelectric and magnetic moments of the nanoparticles. This novel magnetoelectric bistability may be of use in the creation of an electrically-written, magnetically-read memory element. / Graduate

Dopamine et dégénérescence des neurones striataux dans la maladie de Huntington : vers l'identification de nouvelles cibles thérapeutiquesCharvin, Delphine 05 December 2005 (has links) (PDF)
La maladie de Huntington résulte d'une expansion de glutamines dans la protéine huntingtine. Cette mutation lui confère de nouvelles propriétés, dont celle de s'agréger et de produire une neurodégénérescence, qui malgré l'expression ubiquitaire de la huntingtine mutée, est spécifique du striatum. L'objectif de ce travail consistait à explorer le rôle de la dopamine dans cette vulnérabilité striatale. Après avoir démontré que la huntingtine mutée est capable d'activer la voie pro-apoptotique JNK/cJun dans des cultures primaires de neurones striataux (Garcia, Charvin and Caboche, 2004), nous avons étudié l'influence de la dopamine dans ce modèle neuronal. Nous avons alors montré que la dopamine i) active la voie pro-apoptotique JNK/cJun en synergie avec la huntingtine mutée via la production de radicaux libres, ii) augmente la formation d'agrégats via l'activation des récepteurs D2, iii) augmente la toxicité de la huntingtine mutée à travers ces deux effets combinés. Ainsi, nos résultats suggèrent que la dopamine concourt à la vulnérabilité des neurones striataux exprimant la huntingtine mutée (Charvin et al., 2005). Nous avons ensuite évalué in vivo l'effet thérapeutique d'un traitement précoce avec un antagoniste des récepteurs D2 dans un modèle murin de maladie de Huntington. Chez des rats infectés dans le striatum par des lentivirus exprimant la huntingtine normale ou mutée, nous avons montré que l'halopéridol décanoate retarde la formation des agrégats et protègent les neurones striataux exprimant la huntingtine mutée (Charvin et al., soumis). Ces travaux mettent en évidence un rôle potentialisateur de la dopamine dans la vulnérabilité des neurones striataux à la huntingtine mutée et ouvrent des perspectives nouvelles de thérapies pour la maladie de Huntington.
