The current thesis concerns the development of support material for the teaching of reading skills in English in technical courses in Brazil, especially regarding the areas of Electrotechnical/Electrical Engineering. There are two aims for this work: a) introducing the Didatic-Pedagogical Terminography (TD-P), a methodology for developing and building didatic material for ESP (English for Specific Purposes) teachers and professors; b) verify, among ESP professors, if they consider the methodology useful and replicable in other areas. This methodology is based on the theoretical precepts of the teaching of ESP, the Terminology of Textual Perspective, the Socio-Cognitive Theory of Terminology and Corpus Linguistics. Following the methodology’s steps, lexical and gramatical data was extracted from a corpus composed by the textual genre relevant to the teaching environment of Electrotechnical/Electrical Engineering, with the aim of building a prototype of an idealized glossary, in order to work with the mentioned technical area. 30 datasheets from 11 diffrent electrical components were compiled, with the total of 21.467 tokens. The term extraction was carried out using the tools AntConc (ANTHONY, 2004) and TermoStat (DROUIN, 2003). After that, there was a data collection to determine the needs of the learners of the technical area, who need to deal with the datasheets during their professional preparation. The same datasheets used on the term extraction were distributed to 108 students of technical and graduation courses in the Electrotechnical/Electrical Engineering domain. These students were asked to point out the lexical features that caused doubts regarding meaning. The data obtained was contrasted and submitted to the analysis of a specilist in the technical domain. The data obtained from the crossing resulted in specific differences which helped to develop the prototype of the terminographic tool, named GlossElectric. In order to verify the opinion of other professionals regarding the replicability of the TD-P methodology, a video was produced and sent together with a questionnaire to 11 professors who were specialised in ESP. The results of the methodology verification point to a satisfactory degree of replicability, with an average of 84% of participants considering the methodology highly reproducible in their work environment.

Understanding the Digital Future : Applying the Decomposed Theory of Planned Behaviour to the Generation Y's Online Fashion Purchase Intention while Creating and Using a Customised AvatarLancere de Kam, Eva, Diefenbach, Jacqueline January 2020 (has links)
Abstract Purpose - The purpose of this master thesis is to research the Generation Y’s online purchase intention for fashion items while creating and using a customised avatar. Overall, the objective is to create a better understanding of this technology’s potential, formulate managerial implications for fashion businesses and strengthen business viability. Design/Methodology/Approach - The research approach of this study is deductive, whereby hypotheses derive from the Decomposed Theory of Planned Behaviour. After secondary data is reviewed, a single quantitative data collection is applied, thus following a mono-method. This primary data is gathered virtually through a self-administered online questionnaire. A total number of 205 qualified responses from the Generation Y are statistically analysed using a structural equation modelling. This descriptive research design is chosen to conduct the relationships between the latent variables and the behavioural intention. Findings - The empirical findings reveal, that the attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control significantly and positively influence the Generation Y’s online purchase intention to create and use a customised avatar. While the attitude, with the behavioural belief of perceived usefulness specifically, shows the strongest influence on the behavioural intention, the research sample also sees a fit to all technology facilitating conditions, affecting the perceived behavioural control. In comparison to this, the subjective norm influences the behavioural intention in a weaker manner, whereby the research sample is influenced more by external than interpersonal factors. Implications - To enlarge the Generation Y’s online fashion purchase intention while creating and using a customised avatar, fashion marketers are advised to highlight and improve the usefulness of the technology. Fashion businesses are recommended to implement interactive digital platforms, by employing influencer marketing, in order to endorse and promote the brand awareness in regard to the technology. Originality/Value - This master thesis addresses the online purchase intention for fashion items while creating and using a customised avatar from a commercial perspective. Where prior literature findings lack the link to managerial implications, this study examines the Generation Y’s behavioural intention towards this technology. The Generation Y has an immense and increasing purchasing power, which is accompanied with technical skills, thus making them crucial for the market success of online fashion businesses. Therefore, the authors examine the technology's commercial potential and encompass the whole fashion industry.

A measuring tool for integrated internal communication : a case study of the University of South Africa libraryMandiwana, Awelani Reineth 01 1900 (has links)
Text in English, abstract in English, Afrikaans and Venda / This study developed and tested an integrated internal communication audit (IICA) tool to evaluate the communication strengths and weaknesses of the Unisa Library. The existing communication audit instruments were explored, namely: the Communication Satisfaction Questionnaire (CSQ) and the International Communication Association (ICA) audit were adapted and complemented by the Organisational Culture Survey (OCS) and the Critical Incident Technique (CIT). The current trends and the trends in South Africa were also explored.
The sequential mixed method design consisting of the semi-structured qualitative interviews and the quantitative surveys were used to collect data. The ATLAS.ti and the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software packages were used to analyse qualitative and quantitative data.
The results revealed the IICA as an appropriate tool for measuring the integrated internal communication of the Unisa Library. The IICA identified the communication needs of employees; the active and preferred communication channels; and the positive and negative communication experiences of employees. An exploratory study of both the causes of exclusion of persons with physical disabilities from employment and mechanisms to promote their inclusion / Verkenningstudie oor die oorsake van indiensneminguitsluiting van persone met liggaamlike gestremdhede, sowel as maniere om hul insluiting / Ucwaningo lokulinga kokubili izimbangela zokukhishwa inyumbazane kwabantu abakhubazekile ekuqashweni kanye nezindlela zokuqhubela phambili ukubandakanywa kwaboNel-Venter, Cecile Jacqueline 01 1900 (has links)
English, Afrikaans and Zulu summaries / Orientation: The study researched physical disability apropos of employment. The attitudes of able-bodied persons towards persons with disabilities (PWD) culminate in the exclusion of the latter from the workplace. Aspects of this topic have been addressed by researchers abroad and in Africa using samples of limited size.
Research aim: The general aim of the research was twofold. Firstly, it set out to uncover the causes of exclusion of persons with physical disabilities from employment in the South African open labour market, and secondly, to identify interventions that could assuage this situation.
Research methodology: A convergent mixed methods research strategy was adopted, with responses of employers forming the quantitative strand and those of persons with physical disabilities (PWPD) forming the qualitative strand. A customer survey questionnaire was developed and validated for the sample of 342 employers, while interview schedules were used for 312 PWPD. Statistical procedures included factor analysis, chi-square tests and structural equation modelling.
Main findings: Meta-inferences were formulated relating to the mixed methods research. The overarching message conveyed discord in respect of several dimensions, between the perceptions of employers, those of persons with physical disabilities and the theory. Employers are receptive to employing persons with disabilities but conflicted about their management, competence and accommodation. They are reportedly unfamiliar with disability matters, and cannot locate qualified candidates, while disability policies are not commonplace. Key national interventions encompass incentives for employers to hire PWD, tax concessions and amendment of the BBBEE scorecard points system. Important interventions at organisational level entail training in disability matters across the board, as well as disability-related policies. At individual level, PWPD need training in job-seeking techniques, effective avenues to secure work, accommodation and assistive technology, and skills.
To extend the mixed methods research, industrial sectors were compared and latent constructs sought in separate analyses.
Main contributions: Different perspectives gleaned from employers in various sectors, PWPD, disability advocacy organisations and associated groups; expansion of the literature on disability employment; structural equation modelling that produced latent constructs which underlie the causes of exclusion of PWPD from employment and enhance understanding of those aspects with a direct bearing on employers’ receptivity to hiring PWPD.
The findings could catalyse national and organisational policy frameworks to promote inclusion in the workplace. Public policy makers could utilise the findings to devise strategies that would motivate employers to hire PWPD. Organisational policies, with practical guidelines, should be formulated relating to recruitment of PWPD and disability training for staff. The different types of disabilities and job categories in which employers would be willing to appoint PWD were ascertained.
Isimo nokuqondiswe kukho (orientation) Ucwaningo lucwaninge ngokukhubazeka ngomzimba maqondana nokuhambisana nokuqashwa Imibono yabantu abangakhubazekile maqondana nabantu abakhubazekile ngokubizwa ngokuthi yi-persons with disabilities (PWD) ibangela ukuthi abantu abakhubazekile bakhishelwe eceleni maqondana nemisebenzi. Clinical supervision in the Alcohol and Other Drugs sector as conducted by external supervisors under a social work framework: Is it effective?Koper, Marcel, thekopers@gmail.com January 2009 (has links)
In this thesis, I explore the impact and effectiveness of clinical supervision provided by external clinical supervisors, on workers from a variety of practice backgrounds in a residential rehabilitation centre, in the AOD sector. This thesis uses the framework of social work supervision, as defined by Kadushin (1985; 2002), with the administrative, educative and supportive elements. The research focuses closely on the latter two elements. For this purpose, I employ qualitative research methods, via a triangulation of methods, being guided by Participatory Action Research (PAR) and then conducting semi-structured interviews and focus groups as well as acting as a participant observer, to gather the data. The data was analysed using grounded theory. This research was based upon a clinical supervision project that was fully funded and provided free clinical supervision by external supervisors, providing both individual and group supervision, for a period of 10 months. There were a total of 16 respondents with varied roles and training backgrounds as well as an additional six supervisors, interviewed throughout different stages of the project. The various roles undertaken by me throughout the research process provided essential viewpoints on supervision, as well as the place of boundaries and need for support. The power of such a large scale intervention is discussed and ultimately highlights and identifies the particular benefits of supervision in this research arena. This thesis places clinical supervision in the context of workforce development in the Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) sector. Thus, while this research elucidates a number of benefits and the factors involved with this experience, the clear separation of other modalities such as training, mentoring and Critical Incident debriefing are seen as integral additional avenues of support and professional development. This research concludes also with what the difficulties and hindrances were for people to continue with regular ongoing clinical supervision, and warrants the argument for interminable supervision in this setting. This research points to an overall paucity of literature on efficacy studies, especially in the AOD context in Australia. This research significantly adds to this dearth and examines the factors unique to the AOD sector in Australia, as well as what factors make for effective supervision. The particular impact of external supervisors and group supervision are explored, which underwrites the forwarded concept of a customised supervision for this setting. By making explicit in this research what the efficacy is on those new to supervision, it provides greater clarity for future studies. A number of recommendations are proposed as result of this research. New definitions of the supportive function of supervision and of clinical supervision are forwarded, as is a new look at the evolving history of social work supervision. This thesis highlights the impact of external supervisors and the unique contribution they offer.
