The use of microorganisms as the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) which are associated with the majority of plant species is now a viable alternative, mainly by beneficial effects of these fungi for plant growth such as increased absorption of nutrient, especially, P. Association between AMF and fruit or annual plants can enhance productivity of these species, in addition to reducing the consumption of phosphate fertilizers. So to evaluate the morphological pattern of colonization by AMF, two studies were conducted, the first in areas of family farmers who grow acerola and reside in Maranguape-Ce. The second study was conducted in a greenhouse and in Soil Microbiology Laboratory of the Department of Soil Science of the University Federal of Ceará, with cowpea plants and corn fertilized with increasing doses of P. In the first survey, Paris morphology, the presence of intracellular vesicles and hyphae was observed in all areas collected. With the extraction of soil AMF spores, the predominance of genres, Glomus sp. and Scutelospora sp, was found in the four areas where soil samples were collected. In research conducted in the greenhouse, it was observed that the growth of the cowpea and corn was favored by phosphorus fertilization to dose 150 mg P kg-1 soil and 120 mg P kg-1 soil, respectively. The mycorrhizal colonization was reduced by higher doses of P added to the soil and the morphology of mycorrhizal colonization intermediate was observed in both species, not occurring influence of phosphorus fertilization on their morphology. In addition, they identified up to fifteen morphotypes especeis AMF in the soil cultivated with cowpea or corn.

Qualidade e metabolismo antioxidante no desenvolvimento de frutos de clones de aceroleira / Antioxidant Metabolism and Quality during Fruit Development of Acerola (Malpighia emarginata D.C) Clones

Kellina Oliveira de Sousa 05 July 2012 (has links)
Acerola (Malpighia emarginata DC) has already established the potential for industrialization since it is consumed in the form of juices and jellies, used in the enrichment of food products and as nutraceuticals. The fruit ripening is a complex process of development, involving numerous changes in the biochemical, physiological and sensory as well as in oxidative metabolism by determining its quality attributes and antioxidant properties. This research was to study changes in antioxidant metabolites and total antioxidant capacity of fruits of different clones of acerola during development and maturation. Acerola fruits, FS, FB and BRS 366, were analyzed at different maturity stages for quality parameters post-harvest, antioxidant compounds, total antioxidant activity (TAA) and antioxidant enzymes activity. During the development of acerola soluble solids content increased, especially in the fruits of acerola clone FS, the vitamin C content and total extractable polyphenols (TEP) decreased resulting in a decline in antioxidant activity of fruits. The activities of oxygen-scavenging enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) decreased during the ripening of fruits. The maturation of the tropical species studied was accompanied by an increased oxidative stress, which may contribute to the observed changes in the postharvest quality of fruit and a decline in their antioxidant potential.

AVALIAÃÃO DO METABOLISMO ANTIOXIDANTE DURANTE O DESENVOLVIMENTO DE FRUTOS DE CLONES DE ACEROLEIRA E SAPOTIZEIRO

Luciana de Siqueira Oliveira 01 March 2012 (has links)

Are Flat Public Transportation Fares Regressive?: A Look at D.C.'s Metro Fare Structure

Fan, Ziyu January 2020 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Richard Sweeney / Public transportation is found across almost all major cities and differ widely in structure. Notably, transportation agencies adopt different fare structures to suit the idiosyncratic needs of cities. In the United States, the two most common fare structures are: distance based fares, and flat fares. This study evaluates the fairness of these two structures through the lens of consumer surplus and how it varies across different levels of poverty under each structure. Using ridership and demographic data from Washington D.C.'s "Metro" network, price elasticities of demand across demographic groups are determined and then applied to estimate the results of a hypothetical switch in fare structure. The resulting changes in consumer surplus are then compared between stations with different levels of poverty to determine whether one structure is more regressive than the other. The results of this analysis suggest that flexible fares such as distance based fares are more equitable as they charge higher prices for high-income individuals, who are also more price inelastic. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2020. / Submitted to: Boston College. Knowledge, Perceived Barriers, and Preventive Behaviors Associated with Cardiovascular Disease Among Gallaudet University Employees

Tao, Andy Kenji 01 January 2018 (has links)
When the Minority Health Improvement and Health Disparity Elimination Act of 2007 went into effect, there was a corresponding increase in research focused on cardiovascular disease (CVD) in underrepresented groups, except for 1: culturally Deaf Americans. Guided by the health belief model, the purpose of this study was to determine if there were significant differences in the level of knowledge, perceived barriers, and preventive behaviors associated with CVD among Deaf and hearing employees at Gallaudet University, Washington D.C. This cross-sectional quantitative research study used a survey with questions derived from 2 existing national surveys. One hundred eighty-six subjects were recruited on the campus of Gallaudet University. Chi-square analysis was conducted to seek any association between respondents and cardiovascular knowledge. A t test assessed for association between respondent characteristics and knowledge of CVD. A multivariate linear regression model was used to discover if differences in CVD knowledge score were predicted by socioeconomic factors. Deaf (28%) and hearing (43%) participants differed significantly in identifying all 6 correct signs/symptoms of heart attack (p = 0.04). Hearing females (80%) managed their blood pressure at healthy levels which is twice more than their Deaf female counterparts (61%, p = 0.01). Hearing Blacks (78%) had a discussion of their high blood pressure with their doctor more than Deaf Black counterparts (28%, p = 0.05). Gaining a better understanding of the Deaf health trends on CVD could inspire positive social change that ultimately could improve health for Deaf individuals in the United States.

D.C. Modelling of Segmented Lateral P-N-P Transistors

Mills, Michael 06 1900 (has links)
<p> An approximate model has been developed for the p-n-p lateral segmented transistor, and used to characterize the behaviour of the common-emitter dc current gain to the collector segment when the control segment is set to arbitrary voltage levels. The model is a development of the type introduced by Ebers and Moll. </p> <p> The dc current gain is found to be a sensitive function of the control segment voltage, and for changes in this voltage level of the order of± 200mV, it can be made to vary between two limiting values which are dependent on device geometry. A number of applications for this device have been suggested, particularly where an a.g.c. function or controlled current source requirement are needed. </p> <p> An analytic expression has been obtained for the controlled hFE in terms of the control segment voltage and the device parameters, using an approximate analogue for the device geometry. The results have been found to describe the behaviour for a family of p-n-p lateral transistors, having circular geometry with different segment periphery ratios, within the limits of the approximations and experimental errors. </p> / Thesis / Master of Engineering (MEngr)

Retreating to Restore: A Haven for the Athletic Mind and Body

Villegas, Arianna Rosario 04 June 2024 (has links)
Mental health struggles and suicide rates in athletic populations have been on the rise for the past two decades, with an even bigger increase since the pandemic. Disorders such as stress, depression, and anxiety have been the main causes for these struggles and fatalities. The growing rates of mental health disorders and suicide within this population indicate that athletes do not have the adequate resources to restore and improve their mental health. In some instances of presenting their troubles to coaches, staff, or teammates, their only advice is to seek help with on-campus resources or resources at home. Although this can be sound advice in some cases, this can also create the sense that there is no escape from what may be the cause of these mental obstacles. The purpose of this thesis is to create a mental health retreat for collegiate, professional, olympic, and retired athletes. Tucked away at the edge of Rock Creek Park in Washington, D.C., in between existing amenities such as the Carter Barron Amphitheatre and the William Fitzgerald Tennis Center, the retreat allows for the continual use of existing amenities along with other resources and practices provided on-site. This retreat aims to provide spaces and resources at a location that teams or individuals can visit to allow for healing and education about these mental health disorders. This serene space in the middle of a chaotic big city will provide space for resting, performing, healing, and overall restoring which begins to break the barriers between what can be overcome in the feelings that may seem indomitable. / Master of Architecture / Mental health struggles and rising suicide rates among athletes have become increasingly concerning over the past two decades, with a significant spike since the pandemic. Stress, depression, and anxiety are the primary issues affecting this population, and current resources appear inadequate to address their needs. Often, athletes are advised to seek help from on-campus or home resources, which may not always be effective and can sometimes exacerbate feelings of entrapment. This thesis proposes the creation of a mental health retreat for collegiate, professional, Olympic, and retired athletes. Located at the edge of Rock Creek Park in Washington, D.C., near amenities like the Carter Barron Amphitheatre and the William Fitzgerald Tennis Center, this retreat offers a peaceful environment for healing and education. By utilizing existing amenities and providing additional on-site resources and practices, the retreat aims to support athletes in their mental health journeys. This serene space in the heart of a bustling city will offer opportunities for rest, performance, healing, and overall restoration, helping athletes overcome mental health challenges.
