grocery store

Stauffer, Heather Elizabeth 28 September 1999 (has links)
This is my agenda. My "code of ethics". A structure of intentions. I think it's why I'm here. I'm not serious but take me seriously. Cheez Whiz and potted meat, fluorescent lights and vinyl siding. I'm not laughing at it. I fall for the hype. I'm down with the bonus buys. I don't get anywhere pretending I'm above all that. I'm just having fun with it. Siphoning off some of its energy. Borrowing it indefinitely. Everybody does it. It's best when it's an unlikely source. Metallica borrows from West Side Story and Jay-Z makes Annie a rap star (Don't Tread on Me/ Hard Knock Life). Rework my sources. A dash of Shopper's Food Warehouse and a taste of 425 Monroe Avenue blended with an (un?)healthy dose of (un)popular culture and some (nutra)Sweet's for flavor. / Master of Architecture

Análise de própolis da Serra do Japi, determinação de sua origem botânica e avaliação de sua contribuição em processos de cicatrização / Analysis of propolis from Serra do Japi, determination of its botanical source and its effects on mouse fibroblasts

Funari, Cristiano Soleo de 31 January 2005 (has links)
Nowadays a great amount of information relating chemical and biological aspects of propolis is available in the literature, but only a few data on its therapeutic uses are found. The major reason of this fact is due to the enormous variability of chemical composition of propolis regarding the geographiclbotanic source of the material, because bees prepare propolis using different vegetable species as raw materiais from different e cosystems in the environment. In order to increase the therapeutic use of propolis, it is important to establish which biological activity corresponds to a specific type of propolis (regarding its origin and chemical composition). Therefore, the botanical and geographic origin of propolis knowledge should follow any biological investigations with this material. This paper offers a contribution to the chemical composition knowledge of propolis from São Paulo state (Serra do Japi - Brazil) and its botanical vegetable source, as well as the discussion of possible mechanisms involved in wound healing process related to this material. For this reason, presents commended Ministry of Agricultural analysis (loss on drying at 105 ºC, determinations of extractable and non-extractable matter and determinations of ash, wax, flavonoids and total phenolic contents), chemical composition studies by HPLC, comparative chromatographic analysis between propolis and its expected vegetal source, adsorption determination of phenolic substances in skin powder and fibroblast proliferation assay (NIH 3T3 cells). Excepting the drying loss test at 105 ºC, all the parameters have been according the limits established by the Ministry of Agricultural to guarantee the identity and quality of propolis. Identification of kaempferol, kaempferide, isosakuranetin, Artepillin C, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid and t-cinnamic acid in propolis was possible. The specie Baccharis dracunculifolia DC was identified as the vegetable source of the propolis. About 68% of phenolic substances present in the original extract adsorbed to the skin powder. Propolis was toxic to the fibroblasts at 125,0, 62,5, and 31,25 µg/mL and slightly proliferative between concentrations of 7,812 and 0,732 µg/mL but with no significant statistic differences relating the controls. It is conclusive that the propolis under study presents a great variety of phenolic substances, adheres strongly to the human skin, presents no proliferative effect to the mouse fibroblasts (NIH 3T3 cells) and probably helps to esta blish good conditions to the wound healing process.

A performing arts center on the Potomac

Pribish, Robert E. January 1990 (has links)
The nature of Architecture, as it could exist at the edge of a river, was investigated through the design of a Center for Performing Arts located on the design of a Center for Performing Arts located on the Potomac River. Site analysis, functional requirements and structural feasibility were among the considerations utilized in arriving at the proposed design. The Center is comprised of three theaters, restaurants, a marina, administration offices, guest suites, and their ancillary spaces. Six stair towers support a thick wall which is situated at the river’s edge. Stage areas for the theatres were located within the wall between pairs of towers, with seating on one side of the wall and backstage areas on the other. A serpentine “riverwalk” connects the towers and four plazas, encouraging public use of the river’s edge. Parking is provided by a crescent-shaped garage which also serves as a buffer to the adjacent expressway traffic. / Master of Architecture

Creating sacred space: a Spiritualist church

Hassett, Valerie Jane January 1994 (has links)
When contemplating the history of religious architecture several typologies become apparent. There is the refinement of Gothic cathedrals where the volume and use of material not only reinforced the liturgy but gave breath to a tempo of chant. There also is the small New England chapel steeple and modest gable which provide such a compelling image that it has become an icon in American culture. This thesis explores the design of a sacred space independent of traditional symbolism. Rather than attempting to refine an existing typology this design explored what is fundamental in creating a sacred space. A church for a congregation of Spiritualists, who currently are renovating a Methodist church in Georgetown. [2] This design is centered on a few elements. In response to Spiritualist liturgy which is devoid of an altar there is an exploration of defining void thus creating a focal point by the enclosure of space. The importance of views is emphasized, expressly views to sacred areas that are not actually touched. Layering of transparency is explored which provides a vehicle for information between discrete areas. / Master of Architecture

A theological library and scholar's complex for Roosevelt Island

Swanson, Franklin Barringer January 1990 (has links)
Architecture is experience. Man experiences the Architecture within which he lives, works, plays and worships. As a necessity this experience must include a successful response to the needs of its inhabitants in order to fulfill its stated and intended purposes. In this sense man experiences his Architecture in the physical realm of its existence. Yet Architecture is an experience of the spirit. Architecture, through its presence, must elevate man, beyond the physical sense, and strive to glorify the inner being. In the opening section of this thesis I will briefly examine a few ancient ruins in an effort to explore the spiritual nature of Architecture. Following this exploration I will then move into the design portion of the thesis. The project is a theological library and scholar’s complex located on Roosevelt Island in the Potomac River. / Master of Architecture

Quality assessment and safety of fresh-cut melon coated in chitosan matrix added with microencapsulated bioactive extracted from byproducts of acerola / AvaliaÃÃo da qualidade e seguranÃa de melÃo minimamente processado revestido em matriz de quitosana adicionada de compostos bioativos microencapsulados extraÃdos de subprodutos de acerola

Samira Pereira Moreira 21 July 2014 (has links)
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e TecnolÃgico / The minimal processing of fruits and vegetables offers the consumer food fresh and practicality. However, these products rapidly lose quality after processing due to physical changes and their consequential biochemical reactions that can reduce the nutritional value and favours besides the growth of deteriorant and pathogenic microorganisms. Thus, this study aimed to develop a system of active packaging, consisting of an microencapsulated antimicrobial edible coating using chitosan added with bioactive compounds extracted from byproducts of processing of acerola (Malpighia emarginata D.C.) for minimally processed melon to maintain the quality and microbiological safety of this product. The parameters extraction of bioactive compounds of lyophilized byproducts (seed, peel and fibers) were optimized as the rotation speed, extraction time, extraction solution and by proportion: extraction solution. The extract showed high content of antioxidants, especially polyphenols. The coating was produced from the 1:1 mixture (v / v) solution of chitosan and 1% ethanolic extract of bioactive compounds, and chitosan itself as the encapsulating material. Two treatments (coated and uncoated melons) each 3 days during 12 days of storage at 10˚C  1 were evaluated as attributes of quality, bioactive compounds, total antioxidant activity, spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms (Salmonella spp and Listeria monocytogenes). The results showed that the coating samples provided the melons minor loss of firmness and weight, increased the content of yellow flavonoids and total extractable polyphenols, consequently high total antioxidant activity when compared to control cubes. Moreover, the coating showed antimicrobial activity against bacteria (mesophilic, psicotrophic and lactic), molds and yeasts in coated fruits. The novel product is according to RDC ANVISA 12˚ whose recommendation for fresh fruits must be absence of Salmonella spp in 25 g. Therefore, this coating is a viable alternative for maintain the quality of minimally processed melons , since it provided better nutrition by maintaining bioactive fruit compounds, the safety, beyond the scope of the life of the product.
