The Walls We BuildAsp Onsjö, Isabella January 2018 (has links)
In The Walls We Build, the wall acts as a metaphor for the walls we build within ourselves and outside of our selfs. Walls creating separation and alienation, leading to an increasingly polarized society. In this thesis I will be investigating the wall from a material as well as a non-material standpoint. By building a wall out of glass I hope to be able to activate thoughts about what a wall is and what it does to us, and how the inner and outer walls are influencing each other.

EDUCATING HUMANIZATION: AN EXAMINATION INTO THE HUMANIZING PEDAGOGIES OF PAULO FREIREBishop, Jared M. 01 May 2014 (has links)
One way critical educators can understand and orient to Paulo Freire's work and the tradition he inspired is by turning their attention to the alienation and affirmation of what he describes as the "ontological vocation of being human." In this dissertation, I read across Freire's work in order to synthesize what I argue are three central commitments of his ontological vocation: 1) that the self/world are sociohistoric and 2) unfinished, and 3) that the human presence is historic. Next, I read Paulo Freire's more famous "banking" and "problem-posing" models of education through the lens of these commitments in order to demonstrate each as metonyms that stand in for his larger interests in alienating and humanizing cultural action. Finally, I argue that Deanna Fassett and John T. Warren's critical communication pedagogy can be a generative framework through which teachers and researchers can recognize and arrest the alienation of the ontological vocation.

Relations of Freedom: Developing an Account of Karl Marx's Concept of "Freedom"Soester, Jessica Clare 01 January 2008 (has links)
In this thesis I develop an account of Marx's concept of "freedom" through its relation to other key concepts in Marx's work. First, I distinguish Marx's understanding of "freedom" from historical liberal conceptions of freedom, or "liberty," and show that Marx has a concrete understanding of freedom. This leads to a close analysis of Marx's concept of freedom primarily through two texts, the Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844, and the later Grundrisse. Although in both dimensions of the problem I utilize the relation of the concept of "freedom"' to the concepts of "alienation"-- which gives aspects of freedom through its obverse relation to freedom, and "human essence"--which underlies both concepts but is given through them as well, the problem is developed differently in each due the orientation of each text. I give further aspects of Marx's understanding of "freedom" through an analysis of Marx's account of capitalism and exchange value. After having developed an account of Marx's concept of "freedom," I explore avenues for developing a viable Marxism and the grounds of possibility for the realization of freedom.

Together and Alone: Intimacy and Alienation in the Age of Competitive IndividualismMonsour, Mitchell 06 September 2017 (has links)
I begin by discussing structural alienation in the United States and its relationship to the pursuit of romantic love. I argue that romantic love is idealized due the lack of community inherent in a competitive, individualistic society; the romantic partner becomes a replacement for the community individuals once relied on for material and psychological needs. Despite the allure of romantic love, the norms and values associated with it often undermine the development of intimacy, as does the larger society in which the relationship is situated. I refer to this phenomenon as the romantic contradiction. I then discuss some of the factors that contribute to the romantic contradiction, such as the commodification of relationships in a market-based economy, impression management in dating, and the role of gender in heterosexual relationships.
Central to this dissertation, I investigate the dominant ideology of romantic love by conducting a textual analysis of the ten most popular romantic comedies and self-help books on romantic relationships from 2006-2010. My findings suggest the dominant ideology of romantic love promotes long-term, monogamous relationships as the primary way to meet a person’s psychological and physical needs. Furthermore, the ideal relationship is based on gendered needs and responsibilities: men are expected to provide material and physical protection, while women are expected to provide emotional support and sexual intimacy. The ideology encourages a dependency between women and men and various forms of inequality. It also reinforces individualism in relationships by placing greater emphasis on meeting needs rather than developing intimacy (e.g. knowledge, empathy) for its own sake. I conclude with a discussion of competitive individualism and romantic alienation, and suggest avenues for reducing gender dependency and alienation in relationships.

This study is an introduction to the Theory of the Novel's review, by György Lukács,
focusing on two central concepts of this work, which are "splitted man", wherewith the
author has made a diagnose about the modern man: alienated by their own creations and
morally split. Lukács makes his opinion with simultaneous literary analysis of romance, in
other words, the author performs a critical investigation into the aesthetic possibilities of
romance's production and, at the same time, outlines an ethical theory of the history and
elements for a philosophical system. The theoretical and critic treatment of the
romanesque production is, in truth, one medium that allows the author to approach more
existential questions of the human being. When treating literary forms, specially romance,
Lukács indicates the forms of the life, verifying how the "authentic life" is departed from
the life shaped by social structures.

No terceiro e último capítulo
sintetizamos a discussão relacionando o fenômeno do estranhamento no campo da cultura
corporal. Apontamos as expressões objetivas e subjetivas do fenômeno.
limitação no acesso.
ABSTRACT As the starting point of this research defined as the synthesis question: how does the
phenomenon of alienation and estrangement manifest itself in a non-material culture, in that
case, in the body culture? We have distinguished that it is not about a question that sprouts up
from our mind; otherwise, it is built on an empirical reality related to the absence of access to
the human productions of the body culture. Our challenge was to understand how a
production, which initially its result is non-separable from its producer, might estrange itself
from the other one. Having defined the synthesis question we identified that a bibliographic
review would offer us the necessary apparatus in search of this answer. For this, at the very
beginning, we resorted to the Marxian classics – especially The Economic and Philosophic
Manuscripts of 1844, The Holy Family and The German Ideology – and other Marxist texts
for recognizing that there we found the definition of the phenomena of alienation
(Entäußerung) and estrangement (Entfremdung) understanding them from the determination
of each other. After that, as of an ontological study, we defined the body culture as a human
activity featuring a non-material aspect in which the product is, initially, non-separable from
the producer; put itself apparently away from the labor as an organic exchange shall not long
be determined by the mode of production. In the third and in the last chapter we summarized
the discussion relating the phenomenon of estrangement in the field of the body culture. We
pointed to the objective and subjective expression of the phenomenon. Lastly, we highlighted
that what primarily is not separable from the producer, due to the historical determinations,
has its structure modified, and shifts itself to the field of the separable productions in which
the sense does not correspond with the meaning and constitutes itself as one more commodity
to be changed in the great market. This unavoidably causes a limitation in the access. The
producer estranges himself from the product, from the process and from the human gender.
This expression aims to meet a correspondence in the subjectivity field in which the process
of appropriation of the body culture takes place from an appropriation itself, a spontaneous
identity understanding them not as your productions but so as a presumption of his activity, it
means, the body culture estranges itself to the producer.

At present, we can hear too much the meaning “depression” echoes on several contexts, including, in that devotes themselves to the treatment of questions relating to the mental healthy. Faced with this kind of situation, it becomes relevant the continuous thought about this form of subjective and/or contemporary “uncomfortable”. The interest about this subject was born from the clinical day-to-day practice in Public Healthy, done in a Health Center (HC-III) from a small city of the country of São Paulo. Our meanly problem took place of having felling to understand the excessive “use of medicines” about depression at the moment, specifying the subjective impacts caused by the mentioned interventions. We used a quality methodology that psychoanalysis clinic method allowed us to work on the rescue of clinic fragments, where they are made based on things that left over by the own searcher, in a way that it was selected for the search that cases where the patient told about himself in a depressive and dissatisfaction related to the medicine treatment. The interest by this kind of cases comes into because this situation presents some clearness that contradict the perspectives largely publicized in the present time, that claim a diagnosis essentially pathologic followed by medicines prescriptions compared to the uncomfortable showed itself like a manfully fact that is able to impulse the search for the psychotherapy by the patients. Our verification related to the day-to-day practice about the most of the cases verified like depression is always followed by the indication of the day-to-day... Autossacrifício: formação e dissolução de si na contemporaneidade / Self-sacrifice: self-formation and self-dissolution in the contemporaneityFabricio Fernandes Armond 17 September 2014 (has links)
We intend to defend that radical forms of self-control by overcoming physical suffering and bodily needs are subjective responses to the contemporary form of life. Form of life which core lies in what Marxist authors call alienation and commodity fetishism. We will seek to examine the phenomena in psychiatry called \"anorexia nervosa\" or \"anorexia mental\" as one of those responses that, at the same time denies this form of life, and, on the other hand, reaffirms some of its central assumptions.
