Local uses of global media

Yencken, Daniel Egil Ferdinand January 2008 (has links)
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão. Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura Correspondente / Made available in DSpace on 2012-10-23T19:48:41Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 251709.pdf: 8526235 bytes, checksum: 89333c6b26dd765f2f5f895e13a870ce (MD5) / Against the backdrop of the increasing accessibility of media production technologies and the growth in the usage of Internet video websites, this thesis investigates the video work published on the activist media website Centro de Mídia Independente (CMI), in order to explore the uses being made of Internet video in a local context. The thesis looks at a number of new paradigms of the global in order to provide a theoretical context from which to consider the technology on which this use of video is based, the new social movements from which the videos are emerging, and how the videos are positioned in relation to the globalized networked environment of the Internet. The context for the textual analysis is provided by a discussion of narrative forms in journalistic texts, documentary and new media, and particularly, of documentary modes, tensions between journalism and documentary, the impact of digital media on documentary, and properties of digital and new media. The analysis takes the video production from Florianópolis posted to the CMI in 2005 as a case study, exploring the range of documentary modes suggested by the videos, additional styles and strategies that they make use of, and the integration of the videos with the hypertext environment in which they are posted. The thesis argues that a significant dimension of the videos is the diversity of styles and perspectives that they represent. It also argues that locality can be considered in the videos through the shared contexts of their subject matter and of the way in which they are posted to the CMI website. The thesis concludes that the multiplicity of forms of expression encountered in the videos and the multiplicity of perspectives that they provide on their subjects points to the democratic potential of websites such as the Centro de Mídia Independente.

This research, qualitative type of ethnographic inspiration, aims to understand the movements of young farmers on their experiences at Digital Culture. Therefore, participant observation was carried out an agrarian reform community, part of the Movement of Landless Workers (MST). Among the observed spaces highlight the Cabaça (Gourd), a space that enables multiple experiences at Digital Culture. In order to understand what the reflexive movements that young people from different age groups are about digital technologies and digital culture, there were two focus groups with young people aged 13 to 17 years and one with young people from 18 to 22 years. The survey revealed the appalling conditions of access to digital technologies in the country, in particular the lack of internet access, witch affects almost half of the households. These high disconnection rates are the result of the current business model in companies providing telecommunications services in Brazil. The problem is also part of a political dimension, and state responsibility and can be solved with a series of actions and coordinated public policies. Among the possibilities and limitations found in the community, it was found that among the main uses are access to social networking sites, activities related to radio broadcasting and the production of images. These uses pointed developments, such as the risk of fakes profiles on social networking sites, multitasking using various screens and windows, mobile phones as substitutes for radio and mp3 players, learning about photography from the stop-motion technique, besides acting as photographers, collaborating with the records for events, inside and outside the community. Despite the conditions found in the community are not the best, as in many communities in the field, the youth from Terra Vista settlement has sought solutions to accomplish their experiences at Digital Culture, especially for leisure activities, where they can experience the digital free form technologies and thus, appropriate of objects and associated languages, and collectively build their identity.

Energy-efficient algorithms and architectures for multiview video coding

Zatt, Bruno January 2012 (has links)
The robust popularization of 3D videos noticed along the last decade, allied to the omnipresence of smart mobile devices handling multimedia-capable features, has led to intense development and research focusing on efficient 3D-video encoding techniques, display technologies, and 3D-video capable mobile devices. In this scenario, the Multiview Video Coding (MVC) standard is key enabler of the current 3D-video systems by leading to meaningful data reduction through advanced encoding techniques. However, real-time MVC encoding for high definition videos demands high processing performance and, consequently, high energy consumption. These requirements are attended neither by the performance budget nor by the energy envelope available in the state-of-the-art mobile devices. As a result, the realization of MVC targeting mobile systems has been posing serious challenges to industry and academia. The main goal of this thesis is to propose and demonstrate energy-efficient MVC solutions to enable high-definition 3D-video encoding on mobile battery-powered embedded systems. To expedite high performance under severe energy constraints, this thesis proposes jointly considering energy-efficient optimizations at algorithmic and architectural levels. On the one hand, extensive application knowledge and data analysis was employed to reduce and control the MVC complexity and energy consumption at algorithmic level. On the other hand, hardware architectures specifically designed targeting the proposed algorithms were implemented applying low-power design techniques, dynamic voltage scaling, and application-aware dynamic power management. The algorithmic contribution lies in the MVC energy reduction by shorten the computational complexity of the energy-hungriest encoder blocks, the Mode Decision and the Motion and Disparity Estimation. The proposed energy-efficient algorithms take advantage of the video properties along with the strong correlation available within the 3D-Neighborhood (spatial, temporal and disparity) space in order to efficiently reduce energy consumption. Our Multi-Level Fast Mode Decision defines two complexity reduction operation modes able to provide, on average, 63% and 71% of complexity reduction, respectively. Additionally, the proposed Fast ME/DE algorithm reduces the complexity in about 83%, for the average case. Considering the run-time variations posed by changing coding parameters and video content, an Energy-Aware Complexity Adaptation algorithm is proposed to handle the energy versus coding efficiency tradeoff while providing graceful quality degradation under severe battery draining scenarios by employing asymmetric video coding. Finally, to cope with eventual video quality losses posed by the energy-efficient algorithms, we define a video quality management technique based on our Hierarchical Rate Control. The Hierarchical Rate Control implements a frame-level rate control based on a Model Predictive Controller able to increase in 0.8dB (Bjøntegaard) the overall video quality. The video quality is increased in 1.9dB (Bjøntegaard) with the integration of the basic unit-level rate control designed using Markov Decision Process and Reinforcement Learning. Even though the energy-efficient algorithms drive to meaningful energy reduction, hardware acceleration is mandatory to reach the energy-efficiency demanded by the MVC. Aware of this requirement, this thesis brings architectural solutions for the Motion and Disparity Estimation unit focusing on energy reduction while attending real-time throughput requirements. To achieve the desired results, as shown along this volume, there is a need to reduce the energy related to the ME/DE computation and related to the intense memory communication. Therefore, the ME/DE architectures incorporate the Fast ME/DE algorithm in order to reduce the computational complexity while the memory hierarchy was carefully designed to find the optimal energy tradeoff between external memory accesses and on-chip video memory size. Statistical analysis where used to define the size and organization of the on-chip cache memory while avoiding increased memory misses and the consequent data retransmission. A prefetching technique based on search window prediction also supports the reduction of external memory access. Moreover, a memory power gating technique based on dynamic search window formation and an application aware power management were proposed to reduce the static energy consumption related to on-chip video memory. To implement these techniques a SRAM memory featuring multiple power states was used. The architectural contribution contained in this thesis extends the state-of-the-art by achieving real-time ME/DE processing for 4-views HD1080p running at 300MHz and consuming 57mW.

A forensically-enabled IaaS cloud computing architecture

Alqahtany, Saad January 2017 (has links)
Cloud computing has been advancing at an intense pace. It has become one of the most important research topics in computer science and information systems. Cloud computing offers enterprise-scale platforms in a short time frame with little effort. Thus, it delivers significant economic benefits to both commercial and public entities. Despite this, the security and subsequent incident management requirements are major obstacles to adopting the cloud. Current cloud architectures do not support digital forensic investigators, nor comply with today’s digital forensics procedures – largely due to the fundamental dynamic nature of the cloud. When an incident has occurred, an organization-based investigation will seek to provide potential digital evidence while minimising the cost of the investigation. Data acquisition is the first and most important process within digital forensics – to ensure data integrity and admissibility. However, access to data and the control of resources in the cloud is still very much provider-dependent and complicated by the very nature of the multi-tenanted operating environment. Thus, investigators have no option but to rely on the Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) to acquire evidence for them. Due to the cost and time involved in acquiring the forensic image, some cloud providers will not provide evidence beyond 1TB despite a court order served on them. Assuming they would be willing or are required to by law, the evidence collected is still questionable as there is no way to verify the validity of evidence and whether evidence has already been lost. Therefore, dependence on the CSPs is considered one of the most significant challenges when investigators need to acquire evidence in a timely yet forensically sound manner from cloud systems. This thesis proposes a novel architecture to support a forensic acquisition and analysis of IaaS cloud-base systems. The approach, known as Cloud Forensic Acquisition and Analysis System (Cloud FAAS), is based on a cluster analysis of non-volatile memory that achieves forensically reliable images at the same level of integrity as the normal “gold standard” computer forensic acquisition procedures with the additional capability to reconstruct the image at any point in time. Cloud FAAS fundamentally, shifts access of the data back to the data owner rather than relying on a third party. In this manner, organisations are free to undertaken investigations at will requiring no intervention or cooperation from the cloud provider. The novel architecture is validated through a proof-of-concept prototype. A series of experiments are undertaken to illustrate and model how Cloud FAAS is capable of providing a richer and more complete set of admissible evidence than what current CSPs are able to provide. Using Cloud FAAS, investigators have the ability to obtain a forensic image of the system after, just prior to or hours before the incident. Therefore, this approach can not only create images that are forensically sound but also provide access to deleted and more importantly overwritten files – which current computer forensic practices are unable to achieve. This results in an increased level of visibility for the forensic investigator and removes any limitations that data carving and fragmentation may introduce. In addition, an analysis of the economic overhead of operating Cloud FAAS is performed. This shows the level of disk change that occurs is well with acceptable limits and is relatively small in comparison to the total volume of memory available. The results show Cloud FAAS has both a technical and economic basis for solving investigations involving cloud computing.

Made available in DSpace on 2016-02-05T18:30:07Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2015-08-14. The research aims to analyze the possibilities of using the interactivity in the Second Screen tool. The Brazilian Digital TV brought with in the possibility of the viewer interact with the television content through tablets, mobile and other technological devices, such as in apps, content platforms to browse or in social networks. Thus, many authors have named the new experiences as Second Screen and Social TV. But, many times because they are aggregated with a digital televisional content, they are mistaken as a single platform. Through a 'transmetodologíca' research with a documentary literature, we try to discuss issues in order to provide a study of deepening as the base for a possible definition of concepts and to establish the differences and similarities between the two technologies. To this end, and exploratory field study will be used in order to exemplify the current reality. What we observe is that there is a necessity to publish these technologies and how they work in order to extend knowledge or the Second Screen tool. We aim, even though new questions, to disseminate and build aggregate knowledge about the themes and their use in the standard of Brazilian Digital TV, to improve understanding of the population about these innovations
