No. of bitstreams: 1 tese katia kopp.pdf: 961457 bytes, checksum: 3756d48b10534109e9caa6f1bb961523 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-03-30 / Composition and diversity of anuran amphibians in preserved and disturbed environments in the Cerrado of the State of Goiás, Mid-West Brazil. The Cerrado is the second largest biome of Brazil, with an approximate area of 2 million km², which represents about 23% of the total area of the country. Despite the high conversion of natural areas of the Cerrado in agricultural areas and pastures, comparative studies that address aspects of the composition and diversity of frogs from adjacent areas in different states of conservation are lacking. Thus, this study aimed to address taxonomic richness and community composition of anuran amphibians in twelve water bodies located in preserved areas (inside the National Park of Emas - PNE) and disturbed areas located around the PNE to test whether the structure of frogs communities is different in preserved and disturbed areas and whether species richness is correlated with descriptors of the heterogeneity of habitats. Were recorded 25 species of frogs belonging to nine genera of five families in the 12 water bodies sampled. Species richness was higher in disturbed than in preserved areas. Diversity and equitability were significantly higher in preserved water bodies (P <0.05) while dominance was higher in disturbed water bodies. An analysis of percentage of similarity (SIMPER) showed that the percentage of dissimilarity between the compared groups was 52.26%. The analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) showed significant results on differentiation between groups (Global R = 0.17, P = 0.04). Species richness was not related to any descriptor of heterogeneity. Geographic distance was related to species composition between sampled water bodies (r = -0.35, p = 0.01). At least two non-exclusive factors may be responsible for patterns of species composition and diversity of frogs found in the environments studied: a) the disturbance caused by human action in the use of natural areas for agriculture and livestock enables greater richness of species in disturbed areas, which is consistent with the hypothesis of intermediate disturbance, b) the migration between adjacent ponds allows the maintenance of communities and patterns of species composition. Thus, although species richness was lower in preserved water bodies, the highest diversity recorded in such habitats demonstrates their importance for the maintenance of community integrity and viable frogs populations / As comunidades de anfíbios anuros, inclusive em regiões tropicais, são influenciadas diretamente pelas condições ambientais, as quais desempenham um papel importante na estruturação e regulação das comunidades.

Sônia Maria Schaefer Jordão 03 February 2010 (has links)
In São Paulo state, throughout the same climatic zone, semideciduous forests and cerradão patches commonly share the same geographic area. Currently, these two formations are reduced to small fragments, in advanced stage of disturbance. Along with the fragmentation of the forest, there is an increase in ligth incidence at the edges and lianas generally increase their populations, competing vigorously with trees and shrubs species. The objective of this study was to verify the effect of management of lianas on the processe of restoration of forest physionomy in disturbed edges of semideciduous forest and cerradão. It was also analyzed the influence of matrix on the edge of forests and the results of liana removal management. The experiment was installed in Santa Rita do Passa Quatro, SP, on the edges of semideciduous forest fragments surrounded by sugar cane and roads, and cerradão fragments bordered by eucalyptus plantations, sugar cane and roads. The experimental design was randomized with blocks of plots of 100m2 and 3 replications. At the edges of semideciduous forest three techniques of management were tested: cutting of lianas (C), cutting of lianas + revolving surface soil (CR) and cutting of lianas + planting of native tree species (CP). On the edges of cerradão two management alternatives were tested: cutting of lianas (C) and cutting of lianas + revolving surface soil (CR). To analyze the process of restoration of forest physionomy, we assessed the average growth in height and diameter of tree and shrub species, the average mortality and average number of individuals entering the tree stratum, the rain seed, the average mortality and the average number of individuals entering the stratum of regeneration. In both forests, there was a decrease in the richness of tree and shrub species and the number of larger trees from areas surrounded by eucalyptus to areas in a matrix of sugar cane and road. The results of lianas management, both on semideciduous forest and cerradão, were influenced by the degree of infestation, by the structure of vegetation recently managed, by the species composition and by the nature of surrounding matrix. Although in most cases the differences were not significant, positive effects of cutting lianas were observed on the average growth in height or diameter of the individual, mainly in the most infested areas. However, when the edges are contiguous to roads, lianas removal may intensify edge effects, as to disturb the number of individuals entering the stratum of regeneration. On semideciduous forests, cutting the lianas on the edges alone will not be enough to promote the recovery of the forest structure, because individuals providing support for lianas are understory species, being necessary the enrichment of the edges with the tree canopy species. In both forests, the revolving surface soil did not favor the regeneration of arbustive-arboreal species.

Attributional Predispositions and Attributions for Success and Failure Among Seriously Emotionally Disturbed Adolescent Males and Nondisturbed Regular Education Adolescent Males

Turnage, Thomas A. (Thomas Albert) 08 1900 (has links)
This study addressed the attributional predispositions and specific attributions for success and failure of seriously emotionally disturbed adolescent males and nondisturbed, regular education adolescent males (hereafter referred to as disturbed students and nondisturbed students, respectively). Specifically the purpose was to determine an attributional predisposition of disturbed students and nondisturbed students. Furthermore, this study sought to ascertain whether disturbed students and nondisturbed students indicated different attributions for success and failure at achievement tasks. The study then examined the congruence between students' attributional predispositions and their actual attributions.

Exploration of Disorganized Attachment in Emotionally Disturbed Children Through Art Therapy: Case Studies at a Therapeutic School

Kondo-Legan, Vala 01 May 2012 (has links)
This study explores the process by which emotionally disturbed children attach to a new therapist during the first stage of art therapy. Observations center on the ability of artistic metaphor and visual communication to illuminate attachment strategy. Research, in case study format, focuses on two students at the Kayne Eras Center Non Public School. Participants were a 15 year old African American boy and an 8 year old African American girl. Data, consisting of detailed process notes and art products, was analyzed through the application of three research questions; 1. How does artistic metaphor inform the understanding of a child’s inner world, particularly in regard to attachment? 2. Is there a variance between information gleaned from a single, initial art piece, opposed to a body of work, created over time, in regards to attachment? 3. Are attachment strategies conveyed visually, (through art) in the same way they are conveyed verbally or behaviorally? This study found that content of artistic metaphor correlates to existing literature on attachment strategy, thereby substantiating potential for undirected art products to act as assessments of attachment. Additional information was observed concerning subcategories of attachment strategy, trigger patterns of approach and retreat response, internal working models and general coping skills. The congruence of visual, verbal and behavioral communication was found to be dependent on stress levels and the directive structure of therapy. Visual communications frequently served to illuminate internal emotional states. Overall communicative patterns, regarding attachment, were observed in relation to self-protective strategies.

Children's attitudes and behavioral intentions toward emotionally disturbed peers

Crews, Jennifer Linn 01 January 1999 (has links) (PDF)
Previous research has established that children tend to have negative attitudes toward emotionally disturbed peers, as well as physically disabled and retarded peers. Previous research has also found that children tend to have negative behavioral intentions toward physically disabled and mentally retarded peers. Negative behavioral intentions reflect a child's lack of willingness to engage in various social or friendship behaviors with a peer. Researchers have found that when children have negative attitudes toward a physically disabled or mentally retarded peer, they are less willing to interact with or befriend that peer. No attention has been given to children's behavioral intentions toward emotionally disturbed peers, or the connection between children's attitudes and behavioral intentions toward emotionally disturbed peers. Ninety-nine elementary school age children in grades 4, 5, and 6 participated in the present study. Children were presented with eight vignettes describing hypothetical emotionally disturbed and nonemotionally disturbed peers. The vignettes were presented to children in their classrooms where they were asked to express their attitudes and behavioral intentions toward the hypothetical peers. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Rejmanová, Karolína January 2019 (has links)
The topic of the thesis is speech therapy for people with aphasia. The thesis is divided into four chapters, the first three chapters are concerning the theory, the fourth chapter is empirical. The first chapter contains the definition of communication and the definition of disturbed communication ability, it dedicates the central and peripheral nervous system and its impact on the communication ability. The second chapter focuses on the aphasia as a kind of disturbed communication of ability gained by adults. Herein is described the etiology, symptomology and speech therapy intervention, the part of this is diagnostics, therapy and prevention. The third chapter mentions the system of organization of the speech therapy intervention in the Czech Republic which is divided into three sectors. Further is described the speech therapy in home care as an ordinary part of speech therapy abroad. The fourth chapter presents the combined research focused on provided speech therapy in home care in our country. The main purpose of such research was to analyse the specifics of speech therapy in home care for persons with aphasia and to record availability of providing this service. Then the minor goals and the research questions were determined. This was obtained by the questionnaire survey among the speech...

A conversation of people with mental disorders: A study of conversational shift, and the phenomenon of labels of relevance

LetÃcia Adriana Pires Ferreira dos Santos 21 November 2000 (has links)
This research presents an analysis of the conversation of mentally disturbed people focusing on three main aspects: it investigates the conversational markers used in their interactions, it verifies how conversation participants interact with one another and, finally, it analyses the relevance phenomenon. In order to reach our aim, we have analysed the conversation of thirty-five patients of the Centro de AtenÃÃo (CAPS) of QuixadÃ, in Brazilâs northeastern state of Cearà who had their conversations recorded during 1988, 1999 and 2000. The results of the analysis have indicated that both in periods of onset or not, mentally disturbed people give continuation to conversational turns that require the mandatory formation of na adjacency pair, use more post-positioned conversational signals than pre-positioned ones, and utilize more converging and enquiring conversational markers than diverging ones. The hypothesis that, when in crises, the conversation of mentally disturbed people present a greater weakening of the relevance phenomenon has also been confirmed. The study highlights that the conversation of such people is, to some extent, coherent and relevant. This fact calls for a revision as regards the conceptions that defend the isolation of these people by preconceiving them unable of social interaction

Wish to be thinner : Development and Prediction of Disturbed Eating: A Longitudinal Study of Swedish Girls and Young Women

Westerberg Jacobson, Josefin January 2010 (has links)
The overall aim of this thesis was to examine the development and prediction of disturbed eating attitudes in girls aged 7–20 years. The four studies are part of a seven-year longitudinal project including 1279 girls in several age groups (7, 9, 11, 13, 15 years at inclusion) and their parents. Study I showed that among girls aged 11 and 13 years, in addition to a positive relation between disturbed eating attitudes and age, eating attitudes, higher BMI than peers, a less healthy relation to family, and fathers’ eating attitudes, predicted disturbed eating attitudes two years later. Study II demonstrated that girls aged 9–15 years, who wished to be thinner dieted more often, thought that they would be more popular if they were thinner, were skipping meals more often and had a higher BMI, over five years, compared with the girls without such a wish. Study III demonstrated an increasing trend in the wish to be thinner and dieting attempts between the ages of 9 and 18 years. Motives for wishing to be thinner were, e.g., “to feel better about yourself” and “to correspond to the societal ideal”. A majority of the girls adopted healthy weight control practices, but unhealthy and extreme methods were also used. In Study IV, among girls aged 9 and 13 years, a wish to be thinner, fathers’ eating attitudes and mothers’ perfectionism contributed most to the prediction of disturbed eating attitudes seven years later. Protective factors were low BMI and more healthy eating attitudes moderated by high self-esteem, and low-to-medium degree of perfectionism. In conclusion a wish to be thinner, higher BMI than peers, girls’ and fathers’ disturbed eating attitudes, mothers’ perfectionism and a less healthy relation to family predict the development of disturbed eating attitudes in girls. Low BMI and more healthy eating attitudes especially influenced by high self-esteem, and a low-to-medium degree of perfectionism protect against it. The “thin-ideal” is internalized early in girls and it is important to take a critical stand against the thinness ideal in our society, especially in families, and schools. / The IDA-Project

Characterization and Modeling of the Remodeling Process that Occurs in Modular Tissue Engineered Constructs Assembled Within Microfluidic Perfusion Chambers

Khan, Omar 31 August 2011 (has links)
Using a modular approach, a vascularized tissue construct is created by embedding functional cells within submillimeter-sized collagen cylinders (modules) while the outside surfaces are seeded with endothelial cells (EC). The void spaces created by randomly packing modules into a container form EC-lined perfusion channels. Upon implantation, the tissues are remodeled by and integrated into the host and experience, to some degree, immune and inflammatory responses. This work utilized microfluidic techniques to study and model the tissue remodeling in vitro in the absence of the host response. When the construct’s tortuous perfusion channels were reproduced in poly(dimethylsiloxane) microfluidic devices and lined with EC, perfusion at higher flow rates reduced EC activation and maintained the desired quiescent EC phenotype. When applying these results to collagen constructs, higher flow rates were not achievable due to the weak mechanical properties of collagen. To increase the collagen’s mechanical strength, a semi-synthetic collagen/poloxamine-methacrylate hydrogel was examined but due to its heterogeneous surface composition, there was inadequate EC attachment and the material was deemed unsuitable for this application. Proceeding with lower flow rates, tissues assembled within microfluidic perfusion chambers from EC-seeded collagen modules showed that over the course of 24 hours, perfusion did not significantly increase activation but instead increased KLF2 expression, a transcription factor involved in the establishment of EC quiescence, and disrupted VE-cadherin bonds between adjacent EC. However, after 1 week of perfusion, the majority of EC were lost. To ameliorate this loss, mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) were embedded within the modules in order to take advantage of their anti-apoptotic and immunomodulation effects. The MSC temporarily mitigated the loss of the EC but did not prevent it. They did, however, take on a phenotype similar to smooth muscle cells and migrated towards the EC. Perhaps this indicates that the combination of EC, MSC and perfusion drives the creation and assembly of pseudo vessels. Together, the microfluidic techniques used in this study to assemble and perfuse modular tissues revealed new insights into the remodeling process and exposed critical issues surrounding the adaptation of the EC to the combination of perfusion, remodeling and changing flow fields.
