Previous issue date: 2008-10-15 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The present research analyses Thomas Hunt Morgan s studies on sex-determination (1900-1913) and tries to elucidate: which were Morgan s main hypotheses to explain such a phenomenon; whether they were well grounded or not and whether there were any changes in his thought in that period. Besides that, it tries to find whether Morgan s contribution concerning sex-determination were significant as compared to those of other scientists of his time, as well as the kind of strategy he used to become the most frequently cited scientist on the subject.
This thesis contains an introduction and five chapters. Chapter 1 deals with the hereditary precedents and the general scientific context in which Morgan presented his contributions concerning the subject. It also presents a short account of his career, background and professional interests. Chapter 2 describes the different explanations concerning sex-determination presented by several scientists in the first decade of the 20th century. Chapter 3 discusses some results obtained by Morgan in his studies on sex-determination during the period from 1900 to 1910. Chapter 4 discusses whether the evidence got from Morgan s studies on sex-determination from 1910-11 to 1913 was enough to explain his change of opinion concerning the relationship between sex-determination, chromosomes and Mendel´s principles. Chapter 5 tries to answer the questions presented in the Introduction and provides some final remarks on the subject.
This study led to the conclusion that Morgan s belief in a cytoplasmic inheritance of sex-determination till 1910 was grounded on the evidence he got from his embryological studies, as well as his studies on sex-determination in parthenogenetic insects. Even when he admitted in 1909 that chromosomes could contribute in some way to this phenomenon, he supposed that this was a quantitative effect. The evidence got from Morgan s studies from 1910-1911 to 1913 related to sex-linked inheritance in Drosophila, in our view, were not enough to justify his change of mind on the subject by adopting a quantitative Mendelian-chromosome interpretation. Besides that, his old criticisms on the Mendelian chromosome theory as a whole were not answered. This study confirms the interpretation that Morgan s change of view was mainly due to a professional strategy, since he considered this could be a fruitful working hypothesis of work. He admitted students which were of a low academic status in spite of being skilful and well-trained in cytology. Moreover, he chose a cheap and easily breeding experimental material and wrote several works individually or together with his collaborators in a popular style, such as Heredity an sex.

Marginality in post-TRC texts : storytelling and representational actsKim, Ha-Eun Grace 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (English))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: As a society that is only in its adolescence as a democracy, South Africa faces massive inequalities, both politically and socially. Within this context, Fanie du Toit of the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation urges us to remember that “nation-building in our young democracy requires opportunities for South African voices to be heard, particularly those from the margins of society, so often excluded, ignored or forgotten” (1). This thesis thus focuses on story-telling and representational acts of the marginalized in post-Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) texts.
The term “post-TRC” is an indication of the framework I use to explore the poetics and politics of representation, as well as the past‟s impact on contemporary South Africa. In my overview of the TRC, I focus not on actual testimonies, but on the space provided for the marginalized to speak, as well as methodologies and techniques of representation that stem from the TRC process. Antjie Krog's Country of My Skull (1998), which mimics and expands on the TRC's work, sets the platform for my discussion as Krog incorporates many of the victims' testimonies into her narrative. In my second chapter, I explore the tension between advocacy and appropriation as various factors influence Krog's act of representation.
In Chapters Three and Four, the complexities of representation are investigated in four post-TRC texts which feature a protagonist who is either represented as marginalized, or who engages with marginalized individuals. In Chapter 3, I turn to the homeless and the foreigner in Jonathan Morgan and the Great African Spider Writers' Finding Mr Madini (1999), and Phaswane Mpe's Welcome to Our Hillbrow (2001). In Finding Mr Madini, Jonathan Morgan consciously employs a framework for interacting with the homeless that draws on processes of the TRC, and turns away from representing others towards providing a space for self-representation. Welcome to Our Hillbrow highlights the power of narrative in effecting marginalization or belonging, while demonstrating the fluidity of the identities of the self and the stranger.
In Chapter Four, I look at novels featuring youth protagonists to investigate how genre and literary form shape representation. Using Patricia Schonstein Pinnock's Skyline (2000) and K. Sello Duiker's Thirteen Cents (2000), texts which evoke and deviate from the Bildungsroman form, I explore the ways in which these protagonists navigate their fragmented urban spaces. I also end with these novels to see what kind of future awaits these young people in which the marginalized have (not) been given a space to speak.
All these protagonists grapple with the complexities of representation in various ways, as they create stories of self and others to restore a sense of home or belonging in contemporary South Africa. Furthermore, the past is shown to be implicated in the present as colonial and apartheid structures of domination and marginalization are shown to still play a significant role in shaping people's interaction with each other. At the same time, the collective indeterminacy of these texts' endings signals openness to the future, as well as the unfinished nature of the past. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: As demokrasie staan Suid-Afrika nog in sy kinderskoene.

A queer (re) turn to nature? : environment, sexuality and cinemaOlivier, Francois 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis is in interested in the potential of (New) Queer Cinema, with its often cited subversive qualities, as a means to delineate the historical and discursive dimensions of an ongoing relationship between the politics of nature and sexual politics, and to articulate the complex array of ideas that result from this relationship. In this thesis, I investigate how a selection of films actively reproduce, question, deconstruct, or reinforce particular constructions of nature and/or epistemologies of (homo)sexuality, often demonstrating such ideas through particular expressive modes, such as nostalgia, mourning, melancholia, and postmodern play, and by referencing certain literary forms, such as the pastoral, georgic and elegy.
To facilitate the analysis I outline above, I have chosen to investigate three films which enable me to move from national to transnational and postcolonial cinematic contexts. I read these films alongside a selection of literary/historical texts that I feel inform or preface each filmic text. The first film is James Ivory’s adaptation (1987) of E.M. Forster’s novel, Maurice. The second is Derek Jarman’s elegiac film, The Garden (1990), which I read alongside the English filmmaker’s journal, Modern Nature (1991). And finally for my third chapter I turn to the work of Canadian filmmaker, John Greyson; specifically Proteus (2003), his recent collaboration with South African activist/filmmaker, Jack Lewis. This final filmic text prompts questions of postcoloniality and Eurocentric modes of knowledge production. I provide context for my argument by outlining recent developments in the history of Queer Cinema and by introducing two distinct but related areas of recent academic enquiry – firstly the notion of Queer Ecology (alongside related studies on the “gay pastoral”) and, secondly, the field of Green Film Criticism or Ecocinema.

Previous issue date: 2012 / This dissertation examines the construction of space in two narratives: the novel Howards End (1910), by E. M. Forster, and the homonymous film (1992), directed by James Ivory. Our hypothesis is that the film makes use of spatial elements to comment on the film genre itself: the heritage films; and so, it reformulates the initial discourse with which such narratives were related to. Thereby, the function of space in the film is different from that function used in the novel. It is, therefore, a translation strategy which places Ivory’s text in a dialectical relation with its own time, although it tries to recreate Edwardian period on screen. In order to demonstrate our interpretation, we firstly examined the space in the novel. We concluded that, in this text, the space has the following functions: to symbolically discuss the complexity of male and female genres, showing the arbitrary way by which this question was seen at the beginning of the 20th century, and the representation of the house as a place of refuge from the feeling of fragmentation in society; exterior places function as sceneries in which the deep changes brought by modernity are reflected. In the film, however, space is used to construct the aesthetics of display, a typical characteristic of heritage films, to modify the notions on English identity commonly related to these narratives. If, at the beginning, heritage films discourse attempted to redeem British imperialistic position, Ivory’s film deconstructs such attempt and indicates its impossibility. Our work is based on concepts from Descriptive Translation Studies, from polysystem theory by Even-Zohar (1990), Lefevere’s concept of rewriting, and on studies that deal with film narratives such as Vanoye & Goliot-Lété (1994), Aumont (1995), Silva (2007) and Gaudreault & Jost (2009) / A presente dissertação examina a construção do espaço em duas narrativas: o romance Howards End (1910), de E. M. Forster, e o filme Retorno a Howards End (1992), dirigido por James Ivory. Desse modo, a função do espaço no filme difere daquela empregada no romance.

Poetry and national identity in Cyprus and ScotlandDemosthenous, Annika Coralia January 2014 (has links)
This thesis aims to engage with the poetry of Scotland and Greek-speaking Cyprus, and examine the relationship between poetry defined as high culture and articulations of national identity in the two places. Scotland and Cyprus share characteristics that make the establishment of a single, coherent national identity with the appearance of permanence challenging, including their relationships with culturally dominant neighbours, competition between local and official languages, and the insecurity of their status as nations. Both Scotland and Cyprus have historically had hybrid identities; in Scotland, British identity is made problematic by England's cultural dominance, while in Cyprus Greek-speakers have a conflicted relationship with Greece. This is made more complex by the fact that Scotland's political union with England may be ending, while Cyprus is divided in half as a result of tensions between Christian and Muslim populations and the unsubtle past involvement of Greece and Turkey in the island's affairs. This thesis aims to locate trends of national identity through the analysis of poetry and its reception in three distinct contexts. Part 1 analyses the evolution of Scottish and Greek-speaking Cypriot 'national character' through the poetry of national poets Robert Burns and Vasilis Michailidis, and the poets Walter Scott and Dimitris Lipertis. Part 2 explores the effects of modernity on the expression of national identities in literature through the lens of the Modernist movement, and how this was adopted and modified in Scotland and Cyprus. This is discussed with reference to three poets, Hugh MacDiarmid, Kostas Montis and Edwin Morgan, and their treatment of the national past and search for a national literary language. Finally, Part 3 analyses deliberate engagements of poets with national identity and issues of national importance, using Seamus Heaney's idea of 'adequate' poetry as a guide. Two functions of poetry are considered: the role it can play in transforming the landscape into the national homeland, and its potential to address communal trauma, and transform it into a unifying experience.

Statistical Inference for a Ratio of Dispersions Using Paired SamplesBonett, Douglas G., Seier, Edith 01 January 2003 (has links)
Wilcox (1990) examined the Type I and Type II error rates for several robust tests of H0: σ12/σ22 = 1 in paired-data designs and concluded that a satisfactory solution does not yet exist. A confidence interval for a ratio of correlated mean absolute deviations is derived and performs well in small sample sizes across realistically nonnormal distributions. When used to test a hypothesis, the proposed confidence interval is almost as powerful as the most powerful test examined by Wilcox.
