The interpretation of deictic expressions can only be made in relation to a specific reference point (the deictic centre). Five deictic categories are distinguished. Person deixis concerns the deictic persons, that is the speaker, the addressee and possibly a third person if he/she/it is present in the speech situation. Person deixis is mainly reflected in the concordia! and the pronominal system of Northern Sotho. Social deixis refers to those expressions which reflect the speaker's attitude towards the addressee or the third person. Such expressions include lexical items which reflect the speaker's admiration, dislike or respect towards the addressee, as well as kinship terms and vocatives. Although the pronominal system of Northern Sotho is neutral with regard to sex, there are other linguistic ways in which gender distinctions can be drawn. Place deictic expressions are used to identify the location of an object relative to the deictic centre. The location of the speech participants or their bodies may constitute this deictic centre. Demonstratives, demonstrative-copulatives, locational copulatives, locative adverbs and certain verbs are used for this purpose in Northern Sotho. Time deixis is mainly lexicalised by means of temporal adverbs and grammaticalised by means of tense morphemes in the Northern Sotho verb. The interpretation of these expressions depends on the deictic centre (time when the utterance is made). Time adverbs as well as the tenses describe the time of an event. These structures will indicate whether the action took place before coding time (past tense), whether it will take place after coding time (future tense), or whether it coincides with coding time (present tense). Discourse deixis pertains to those expressions which are used to refer to parts of the discourse, or to nominal antecedents of which the referent is not present in the extra-linguistic context of the utterance. Demonstratives, demonstrative copulatives, third person pronouns, certain adverbs, identifying copulatives, certain qualificatives and certain conjunctions are used for this purpose in Northern Sotho. Between "This" and "Like that", differences between deixis ad oculos and deixis am phantasma in gestures, intonation and syntax : children between 4 - 7 years old

Rashdan, Khalid 27 November 2014 (has links)
In this thesis, I treat with the question of Deixis on three levels of language: Syntax, phonetic and gestural. The main idea is that the Deixis does not end on pointing out a present object and can go further with more abstract features. This thesis has three basic parts. The first contains a definitional chapter and in the second chapter I present the three basic processes of Deixis: categorization, nomination and memorization. In the second part, I study the cognitive process of Deixis from a dynamic point of view and use theories and concepts to clarify its methodology. I explain the dynamics of Deixis Ad Oculos and Deixis Am Phantasm showing how this dynamic is completely dependent on the personal representations of the subject. The concepts share and egocentrage give us a sense of analysis that we can use as criteria to decide whether such subject has good communicative gesture to clarify his message to others. These concepts can be very interesting in terms of research regarding actor’s behavior and detection studies. Thus, with some deeper research we can create lists of criteria and characteristics that will help us to distinguish and detect the appropriate behavior from the inappropriate one. Similarly, we can define normal behavior from the abnormal one and apply these criteria and indicators on children with disabilities, such as dyslexia and autism, to help them to express themselves in the future.

Showing the Point: Understanding and Representing Deixis over Surfaces

2013 February 1900 (has links)
Deictic gestures, which often manifest as pointing, are an important part of interpersonal communication over shared artifacts on surfaces, such as a map on a table. However, in computer-supported distributed settings, deictic gestures can be difficult to see and understand. This problem can be solved through visualizing hands and arms above distributed surfaces, but current solutions are computationally and programmatically expensive, rely on a limited understanding of how gestures are executed and used, and remain largely unevaluated with regards to their effectiveness. This dissertation describes a solution to these problems in four parts: 1. Qualitative observational studies, both laboratory-based and in the wild, that lead to a greater understanding of how gestures are made over surfaces and what parts of a gesture are important to represent. In particular, these observations identified the height of a gesture as a characteristic not well-supported in distributed groupware. 2. A description of the design space available for representing gestures and candidate designs for showing the height of a gesture in distributed groupware. 3. Experimental evaluations of embodiments that include the representation of gesture height. 4. A toolkit for facilitating the capture and representation of gestures in distributed groupware. This work is the first to describe how deictic gestures are made over surfaces and how to visualize these gestures in distributed settings. The KinectArms Toolkit is the first toolkit to allow developers to add rich arm and hand representations to groupware without undue cost or development effort. This work is important because it provides researchers, designers, and developers with new tools for understanding and supporting communication in distributed settings.

The usage of deixis in print advertisements related to cosmetics / Deiksės vartojimas kosmetikos reklamoje

Žulytė, Renata 17 July 2014 (has links)
Advertising is a type of communication between the consumer and the creator of the particular advertisement. In order to allure the potential customer advertising companies use a wide spectrum of manipulative language devices, in particular deixis. The fundamental concept of deixis is associated with the interaction, as the primary function of deictic expressions is to “point to” things. Besides, it helps to determine who is communicating with whom. It creates a connection between the sender and the receiver of the message.

Framing Coordination in Collocated Computer-Mediated Communication

Alaloula, Nouf M. 26 May 2010 (has links)
This thesis explores the framing of coordinative experience in collocated computer-mediated communication. It highlights the importance of low- level coordinative properties through multifaceted examination of the transcript of the first minute of a constructed coordinative situation. In efforts to truly understand the culture we are creating and invoking by adding computers to people's activities in groups, and life in general. A lab study was conducted using a computer program that allows one or more users to solve a Sudoku puzzle together, each on their own separate computer. This allowed for an investigation of what happens when people and technology are located in the same place. How do people construct their situation, in terms of who goes next, what do they do and what constitutes the behavior framing. / Master of Science

IT et la question de la référence / IT and the question of reference

Mathurin, Elise 23 November 2018 (has links)
This thesis in English linguistics studies all the uses of IT, whether referential or non-referential. Firstly, this work tries to define the concept of reference as precisely as possible. The status of IT as a "pronoun" is also analysed. Moreover, all the uses of IT (anaphoric, cataphoric, deictic, non-referential, etc.) are analysed in a wide variety of sentences (subject and object extraposition, it-cleft, left and right dislocation, idioms, advertising slogans, etc.) This thesis claims that the referential status of IT cannot simply be divided in two categories : referential or non-referential. On the contrary, it seems that reference can be calculated on a continuum or scale from strongly referential to weakly referential.

Multimodalité de la communication langagière humaine : interaction geste/parole et encodage de distance dans le pointage / Multimodality of linguistic communication : Gesture/speech interaction and distance encoding in pointing tasks

Gonseth, Chloe 12 March 2013 (has links)
Designating an object for the benefit of another person is one of the most basic processes inlinguistic communication. It is most of the time performed through the combined use of vocaland manual productions. The goal of this work is to understand and characterize the interactionsbetween speech and manual gesture during pointing tasks, in order to determine howmuch linguistic information is carried by each of these two systems, and eventually to test themain models of speech and gesture production. The first part of the study is about the production of vocal and manual pointing. The originalaspect of this work is to look for distance encoding parameters in the lexical, acoustic, articulatory and kinematic properties of multimodal pointing, and to show that these differentcharacteristics can be related with each other, and underlain by a similar basic motor behaviour: designating a distant object induces larger gestures, be they vocal or manual. This motorpattern can be related with the phonological pattern that is used for distance encoding in theworld’s languages. The experimental design that is used in this study contrasts bimodal vs. vocalmonomodal vs. monomodal manual pointings, and a comparison between these conditionsreveals that the vocal and manual modalities act in bidirectional cooperation for deixis, sharingthe informational load when used together. The second part of the study explores the development of multimodal pointing. The propertiesof multimodal pointing are assessed in 6-12 year-old children, in an experimental task similarto that of the adults. This second experiment attests a progressive evolution of speech/gestureinteractions in the development of spatial deixis. It reveals that distance is preferentially encodedin manual gestures in children, rather than in vocal gestures (and especially so in youngerchildren). It also shows that the cooperative use of speech and manual gesture in deixis is alreadyat play in children, though with more influence of gesture on speech than the reversedpattern. The third part of the study looks at sensorimotor interactions in the perception of spatial deixis. This experimental study, based on an intermodal priming paradigm, reveals that manual gestureplays a role in the production/perception mechanism associated with the semantic processingof language. These results can be related with those of studies on the sensorimotor nature ofrepresentations in the processing of linguistic sound units.Altogether, these studies provide strong evidence for an integrated representation of speech andmanual gestures in the human linguistic brain, even at a relatively early age in its development. They also show that distance encoding is a robust feature, which is also present in all aspectsof multimodal pointing.

Our aim is to find out where to point the deictic spatial coordinates, and investigate how these coordinates are constructed in discourse and seek to draw a profile of these coordinates as a function of spatial distance of the interlocutors. To address the phenomenon under study, we focus our research on three pillars: the study of referral, which includes the study of spatial deixis we refer to us, especially the work of Dubois and Mondada (2003), Lyons (1977) Levinson (2007 ), the phenomenon of the construction of referring expressions, we consider very pertinent studies of Ariel (1996, 1998 and 2001) and his theory of accessibility, the semantics of space, we make use of the observations of Lyons (1977) and Saeed (2003) . With the theoretical completed, we analyzed 80 personal emails, 40 interactions and their interviews. The interviews helped to know a little more about the production situation of the messages and also helped to separate the messages into two major groups depending on the spatial distance is established between the interlocutors. Separate groups, marked the deictic and studied the conditions of production and semantics of deictic spaces, we come to several considerations, among which we point out the following: speakers who have significant spatial distance feel a greater need to address the space and it is located, factors diverse nature justifying the emergence of such coordinates in discourse, spaces are mainly metaphorical sense of time and now that point to a type of e-mail; speakers who present a short space feel little need to depict the space, the space depicted, in general, will be shared soon, so the more detail of such marks, the criterion morphosyntactic and first mention of justifying the provision of the coordinates in this block, the spaces have metaphorical idea of time, but point to a later.
