Selected Graduate Programs of Professional Education in the Spanish Southwest, with Curricular Emphases on Blacks, Indians, and Spanish Americans

Ray, Ruth Dunn 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to describe graduate courses and programs of professional education at selected institutions which emphasized the preparation of educators to work with Blacks, Indians, and Spanish American (EISA). Information from a survey of college and university graduate catalogs and the review of literature was used to select three institutions for an in-depth study. The institutions selected for study were East Texas State University (ETSU) at Commerce, the University of Texas at Austin (UT/Austin), and the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Although only three institutions were selected for in-depth study, there seems to be evidence to support the following conclusions: (1) there seem to be more courses and programs with emphases on preparing educators to work with BISAs when outside funding is available, (2) continuation of courses and programs to prepare educators to work with BISAs seems to be directly influenced by the interest and involvement of individual instructors, (3) the instructors who were the most interested in preparing educators to work with multicultural groups seem to have larger classes, (4) the ethnic background of the instructor also seems to influence the effectiveness of a course, (5) a nonthreatening learning atmosphere seems to influence open discussions of serious cultural issues, and (6) informal interaction of Anglo, Black, and Mexican American educators seems to be an effective and satisfying type of cultural exchange and develooment of a cultural awareness.

Koler, Peter 14 May 2013 (has links)
This paper aims to examine identity-related experiences of adolescents without confirmed diagnosis regarding their episodes of alcohol consumption and excessive drinking. The core assumption was that there is a connection between the participation in consumption scenes, alcohol scenes in particular, and the identity development of a young adult. The underlying questions of the study were the following: What are the reasons for the consumption of psychoactive substances in today’s 15 to 25-year-olds? How do consumers themselves value and assess their episodes of excessive drinking? What are the subjective and group-specific reasons for the participation in consumption behavior, which can be considered as dangerous and health damaging by people that are not involved? Qualitative and quantitative approaches were applied in the study. The core issue of the research consists of the analysis – based on the Grounded Theory Method – of 19 half-standardized, topic-related interviews with 23 young male and female subjects aged 14 to 20 experienced in consumption and inebriation. The empirical part of the study refers to the situation in South Tyrol. The quantitative part focuses on the change in consumption preferences of the population of 15 to 25-year-olds over the last eight years and on the correlation between consumption behavior and existential orientation. This paper can also be considered an attempt to show the perspective of the people concerned. The findings of the study clearly and unequivocally indicate that alcohol scenes provide important stimuli for the identity development and consolidation that adolescents need on their way to their adult life. These scenes are self-contrived and self-organized and can help adolescents to let go of their childhood and to find their own self. They teach participants to competently handle key situations. After some years, they develop a critical reflecting ability through their participation and they distance themselves from the scenes. The frequently encountered ambivalences also show that alcohol scenes are artificial worlds and do not represent the optimal and ideal places for this transitional period. Alcohol scenes take over this function because of the fact that adults have taken leave of this place. Since time memorial, a young people’s essential task has been that of finding their own place in the social fabric and second modernity has not provided appropriate “software” for the present living conditions yet.

Development of a Variable Dilution Olfaction Chamber Coupled with a Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometer for Evaluation of Human Response to Indoor Emissions from Scented Volatile Chemical Products

Jordan N Cross (16700061) 02 August 2023 (has links)

This study is focused on the design, production, and operation of a controlled environmental olfaction chamber to evaluate human physiological and emotional response to volatile chemical emissions (VCPs) from scented household products in addition to careful characterization of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in these product emissions. Utilizing proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry, the chamber can collect VCP emissions and identify VOCs present to complete an accurate chemical profile of household and common product emissions not previously known. This instrument is one of the first of its kind and will serve as a key element in understanding the relationship between human physical and cognitive health and the built environment.

Sjuksköterskors upplevelser av vårdinformationssystem och vårddokumentation : En kvalitativ intervjustudie om utmaningar och möjligheter / Nurses' Experiences of Health Information Technonlogy and Documentation : A Qualitative Interview Study On Challenges And Possiblities

Johansson Hultman, Elin January 2023 (has links)
Enligt ramverket Technology, People, Organizations and Macroenvironmental factors (TPOM), påverkar ett antal områden hur väl implementering av vårdinformationssystem faller ut. Totalt tio subkategorier identifierades under huvudkategorierna. / Background: Currently in Sweden, there are a number of ongoing extensive projects aiming towards development and adoption of futures’ health information technology (HIT). These systems are formed to make the processes and IT environment of health care more effective. Electronic health records are the most used type of health information technology. Other examples are systems for laboratory testing, patient administration and prescription of medications. Even though HIT has proven to contribute to effectiveness and quality of care, the implementations of such systems has a history of failing. According to the Technology, People, Organizations and Macroenvironmental factors framework (TPOM), a number of dimensions has an impact to determine the success of HIT implementation. Nurses are the largest group of registered health care practitioners in Sweden. Nursing care include caring for the individual in whole, which leads to nurses extensive, and frequent use of HIT. To contribute to successful development, implementation and continuous management of HIT, nurses’ experiences of challenges and possibilities in HIT and documentation must be described further. Aim: This study aims to describe nurses’ experiences of challenges and possibilities in Health information technology and documentation in the perspective of Technology, People, Organizations and Macroenvironmental factors. Method: Qualitative, semistructured interviews was conducted with ten registered nurses coming from different types of care. Data was analyzed based on deductive approached qualitative content analysis, using the TPOM framework. Results: Challenges and possibilites within technology, people, organizations and macroenvironmental domains were identified and described. A total of ten subcategories were identified. The respondendts experienced similar challenges and possibilites, regardless of workplace and health information technology. This implicates that the result of this study might be considered in development, implementation and management of HIT.
