Samverkan för en socialt hållbar stadsutveckling : Aktörers upplevelser av planeringsprocessen i stadsutvecklingsprojekt med fokus på social hållbarhet / Collaboration for a socially sustainable urban development : A study of actors' experiences from the planning process of urban development projects focusing on social sustainability

Byskén, Nicole, Stener, Elsa January 2017 (has links)
It is becoming increasingly common for public and private actors to collaborate in urban development projects to promote sustainable development. The social dimension of the concept of sustainability has recently gained greater acknowledgement in urban planning, where collaboration is seen as an important element in creating socially sustainable areas. This degree project intends to investigate how public and private actors collaborate in urban development projects to promote social sustainability. The purpose of the study is to provide with knowledge about opportunities and challenges with collaboration in the work of creating a socially sustainable urban development. This is investigated in a case study of the ongoing planning process of the project Odde. The plan is to construct approximately 2000 dwellings in the district of Kista, Stockholm. Odde is a pilot project for social sustainability where the City of Stockholm and the developer Skanska and Areim, are collaborating in the process of developing a detailed development plan for the area. The study intends to explore the following research questions: how do actors work with social sustainability in a collaborative process? and; what opportunities and challenges can be identified for collaboration between public and private actors in the work of creating a socially sustainable urban development? The empirical material is based on interviews with actors involved in the project as well as studies of working material from the project Odde. The results of the study indicate that working with social sustainability in a collaborative process is considered rewarding but challenging. The two main actors desire to promote social sustainability, and experience that collaboration can assist achieving the holistic approach needed for social sustainability. However, it may be a time-consuming process to reach a shared view of how to collaborate in practice for social sustainability. The study shows that this can be explained by the fact that social sustainability is an abstract concept, and thus difficult to measure. This complicates the division of responsibilities needed to realize the suggested measures. Three themes has been identified in the Odde project that have proven to be important components in creating favourable conditions for finding a collaborative planning process around social sustainability. These are; social sustainability as a process, social sustainability as a goal and finally a common understanding of social sustainability. A great potential can be distinguished in public and private collaboration to promote social sustainability in urban developments.

Tracing Systematic Factors of Lead Time Deviations : A Case Study of Large-Scale Custom-Driven Development Projects at Saab Surveillance

Wallden, William January 2023 (has links)
In a world driven by technological advancements and ever-changing consumer preferences, large-scale custom-driven development projects have emerged as the gateway to creating complex products and systems tailored to individual customer needs. Steering these projects to successful completion presents significant challenges, with lead time deviations being a key concern. This study investigates an industrial defense corporation's current product development process to examine systematic factors that negatively impact lead time. Therefore, semi-structured interviews wereconducted with eight interview persons with the primarily aim to identify and classify these systematic factors into three organizationalperspectives providing a comprehensive understanding of their implications.  These perspectives revealed how systematic factors shaped initial project planning expectations and potential consequences, based on the organization's priorities. Additionally, the study emphasizes the need for a flexible risk-reducing reactive project model to mitigate lead time deviations stemming from the company's existing project model. Lastly, the study reveals that large-scale custom-driven development projects require careful consideration of trade-offs related to multi-project management and resource allocation. Companies must make decisions regarding whether to prioritize efficent project execution or winning business deals.

Human Resource Development: An assessment of capacity development initiatives of World Bank projects in Ghana

Danquah, Joseph K. January 2017 (has links)
The significance of capacity development programmes, as key driver for sustaining development goals, is anchored in all international fora. This research complements and extends our present understanding of the contribution of capacity development approaches to development and achievement of the SDGs. This is achieved by critically assessing the impact of capacity development initiatives sponsored by the World Bank. This thesis has focused on analysis of implementation strategies and critical assessment of the impact of the projects using multidisciplinary approach, utilising a range of quantitative and qualitative methods. It provides a sound empirical basis for assessing the complexities of these projects. This empirical investigation has identified a wide range of disparities of implementation strategies utilised for capacity development initiatives among the major international players (World Bank and UNDP). These findings clearly indicate that there is no single strategy for the implementation of capacity development initiatives. Thus, based on empirical evidence, as well as a critical review of the literature, the study proposes a model for achieving critical sustainable capacity development based on broad and long-term strategies; input, process, output, and outcome which defines the appropriateness of policies and practices that support sustainable development. It is concluded that capacity development initiatives are relevant and essential ensuring national development and sustainable results. The recommendations include the focus on individual, organisational, and societal factors when planning, developing and adopting strategies for implementing all government/national programmes.

Community development projects and their contribution to rural women empowerment in Lulekani of Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality, Limpopo Province

Baloyi, Vongani Olga January 2022 (has links)
Thesis (M.Dev. (Planning and Management)) -- University of Limpopo, 2022 / The implementation of community development projects in rural South Africa was expected, among other outcomes, to empower women by creating opportunities for their sustainable livelihoods. This study investigated contributions made by such development projects on women empowerment in Lulekani of Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality of Limpopo Province. The research objectives were to determine the nature of community development projects, to examine the role of the projects in empowerning women and to find out strategies required to improve the impact of the projects on women empowerment. Anchored within an interpretivist philosophical paradigm, the study employed a qualitative research approach using a case study method. The study population consisted of women who actively participate in community development projects and those who are outside the projects. Purpose sampling was applied in selecting the sample. Inclusion criteria were that participants should have been participating in the projects and/or residing in the community of Lulekani. The sample also included a few women who did not participate in the projects. This was done for comparative purposes. For data collection, unstructured face-to-face and focus group interviews were used. Data were collected about relevant issues on empowerment such as, but not limited to, skills development, income generation, accumulation of assets, social capital and human resource development. The study found that the projects were contributing to women empowerment by creating employment and generating income for them and their families. However, it was evident that much more could be done to multiply the size of incomes and improve their lives of in terms of skills development and by providing support for the long-term sustainability of the projects. The study therefore recommends that policy makers should consider developing to more holistic and appropriate strategies to improve contributions of community development projects on women empowerment. The study concludes that while community development projects have a potential to empower women, this critically depends on strengthening their capacity, particularly with respect to management and administration of those projects as well as enhancing their access to markets and other support.

The Impact of Risk Management on Project Success. A case study of the Land Administration Project, Ghana

Boampong, Boakye January 2021 (has links)
While previous research suggests that risk management influences project success, less is known about the practical application of the risk management concept on projects and its’ influence on development project success. Thus, this thesis investigates the impact of risk management on project success from a development project perspective. Adopting a qualitative case study approach with semi-structured interviews as the main source of data collection and assessing success from a stakeholder perspective as well as the achievements of the project’s intended outcomes and analysing the various risk management strategies adopted in the pursuance of those outcomes, the findings indicate that risk management practice positively influence development project success. To achieve this, the empirical data shows that risk identification need to be approached strategically to provide a clear focus for project delivery leading to the design of strategic actions to respond to identified risks as well as an effective monitoring and evaluation of the risk management process as a whole. Additionally, the different stakeholder objectives and expectations need to be strategically incorporated into the risk management strategy without deviating from the project’s purpose. The study recommends the need for development project managers not to over-rely on academic expertise in their identification of risks but make use of the wider pool of knowledge available to them, technical or not and to also pursue the positive impacts of risk. Furthermore, they should widen their risk management strategies to include donor support missions, without deviating from the project’s purpose, to ensure transparency and efficiency.

The understanding of poverty by poverty-alleviation project participants

Kgadima, Nathaniel Phuti 30 June 2009 (has links)
The war on poverty is South Africa's priority and challenge. Many poverty alleviation programmes have been established in South Africa in an effort to overcome poverty. However, poverty alleviation projects have had little impact on the poverty profile of the country. Poverty continues to be pervasive, intractable, and inexcusable. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into the personal definition of poverty as constructed by the poor themselves. In this study the researcher's main argument was that sustainable poverty reduction calls for effective strategies based on clear and consistent concepts and approaches. Different ways of understanding poverty lead to different ways of dealing with it. A common and clear understanding of poverty helps build a common agenda with development partners, linking specific causes of poverty in each setting with sustainable policies and action. A qualitative study was conducted with fifteen (15) poverty-alleviation projects participants from three (3) different projects. Data was collected with the use of an interview guide. The participants' responses revealed that poverty, like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder. The participants attached varying and interesting meanings to explaining the concept of poverty. The study also shed some light on the current state of the poverty-alleviation projects. / Social Work / M.A. (Social science)

Community group environment for people participation and empowerment

Diale, Nkgodi Race 11 1900 (has links)
This study explores participatory development methods which may be engaged with a smaller community interest group to create an environment conducive to free and effective participation towards empowering more participants in rural communities. The study was conducted in Makhuduthamaga Municipal area in Sekhukhune District of Limpopo Province. The data was collected through participants observation during application of Participatory Rural Appraisal techniques , community groups, documents reviews, and groups and individual interviews. The study looked into participation procedures and pattern during Participatory Rural Appraisal techniques, groups' institutionalisation and internal participation environment. The study also conducted comparative analysis between community interest groups and organisational linkage structures, in order to establish how free and conducive the groups' internal environments are between the cases. The study found that: interest groups are more common, accessible and empowering in rural communities than organisational linkage structures. People participate and attain self-esteem and selfreliance, making them participate and develop a sense of responsibility and ownership. The findings will therefore inform development agents in government departments and NGOs about the elements to consider in the implementation of development programmes, and to make appropriate choice of partic ipatory models for effective partic ipation and empowerment. The stud y's theoretical contribution is in sustenance participation theory, which argues that for people to effectively participate in their development, they should be made to participate by being given responsibilities which may motivate them to participate in finding solutions, own the outcomes, and participate toward sustaining them. / Development Studies / D.Phil. Rural development and community participation in Lesotho

Monaheng, Tsitso 11 1900 (has links)
Rural development efforts in Third World countries often fail to meet the needs of the most disadvantaged members of society. The priviledged continue to get a disproportionate share of the fruits of development. This is so in spite of the fact that development thinking has changed from the days when the poor were expected to benefit from development through the "trickle down" effect. It is now widely recognised that development should be focused on people in their local communities (human development) and not on the economy per se. To achieve this type of development requires an appropriate strategy of development, and people's/community participation is such a strategy. People's participation in development takes place through community based organisations. The organisations faciiitate the development of the human potential of members. This study investigates the conditions under which rural community participation takes place in lesotho. The Thabana-Morena Integrated Rural Development Project is used as a case study. The first objective is to determine the appropriateness of the organisations through which community participation was promoted in the project. The second objective is to isolate the political and administrative factors which affected participation in the project. Thirdly, the study tries to identify factors at the village level which influenced participation in the project. Fourthly, the study evaluates the effectiveness of the project in experimenting with participatory approaches, given that development projects are basically mechanisms for testing the appropriateness of national policies before applying them on a wide scale. Finally, a set of principles is developed on the basis of which participatory development can be facilitated. / Development Studies / D. Litt. et Phil. (Development Administration)

Spatial analysis of development projects in Venda : a case study of the Tshivhase tea estate

Adjei, Alexander 01 1900 (has links)
The research was undertaken to investigate the impact of the Tshivhase Tea Estate on the space economy of Venda, the people and area ofMapate, and Duthuni, among whom the Tea Estate is established. The approach is based on principles. Principles of development theory are combined with appropriate spatial models. The development reality of Venda, together with many other development projects are analysed. Does the tea estate address the rural poverty problem? Findings are presented from a case study of Tshivhase and this proved the lack of growth and development impulses to alleviate the poverty of the rural people among whom it is located. Development is considered in terms of its possible simultaneous diffusion of economic activity and modernisation in all four dimensions of the spatial system : political, socio-cultural, economic and physical. / Department of Geography / M.A. (Geography)
