Improving Computer Security Dialogs: An Exploration of Attention and HabituationBravo-Lillo, Cristian Antonio 01 February 2014 (has links)
Computer dialogs communicate important security messages, but their excessive use has produced habituation: a strong tendency by computer users to ignore security dialogs. Unlike physical warnings, whose design and use is regulated by law and based on years of research, computer security dialogs are often designed in an arbitrary manner. We need scientific solutions to produce dialogs that users will heed and understand.
Currently, we lack an understanding of the factors that drive users’ attention to security dialogs, and how to counteract habituation. Studying computer security behavior is difficult because a) users are more likely to expose themselves to risk in a lab experiment than in daily life, b) the size of observed effects is usually very small, which makes it necessary to collect many observations, and c) it is complex to balance research interests and the ethical duty not to harm.
My thesis makes two contributions: a novel methodology to study behavioral responses to security dialogs in a realistic, ethical way with high levels of ecological validity, and a novel technique to increase and retain attention to security dialogs, even in the presence of habituation.

Det ideala samrådet, när, var, hur? / The ideal consultation, when, where, how?Treskog, Jacob January 2023 (has links)
Consultation as part of the detailed planning process was introduced with the Planning and Building Act (1987:10), which is now referred to as the older Planning and Building Act. Public engagement had grown stronger during the 1960s and 1970s when there was a lot of construction happening at a rapid pace. Consultation was a way to involve the public in the planning of areas in order to create more sustainable projects and increase public influence in the planning process. In addition to the statutory consultation, municipalities can engage in early dialogues to gather more information and provide opportunities for public influence. The consultation and the overall process have been criticized for not being sufficiently democratic, and it has been difficult to determine when dialogues should take place to achieve the best possible effect. The purpose of the bachelor's thesis is to investigate when consultations and dialogues should take place and why they should take place at that time. I did also investigate how consultation and dialogs should be done in order to contribute to an effective and sustainable detailed planned process. First, a literature review was conducted to identify relevant theoretical frameworks and find out what has been said in previous investigations and studies. It has been found that consultations and dialogues are necessary to increase influence and reduce dissatisfaction among citizens. The dialogues should be conducted continuously throughout the process to prevent errors that would take much longer to address at a later stage. Following the literature review, a qualitative study was conducted in the form of interviews with semi-structured questions addressed to municipal officials. The study revealed another reason for consultations and dialogues, which is knowledge acquisition. The timing of the dialogues varies greatly across different projects, but it is important to inform why the dialogue is being held. The conclusion I can draw from the study is thus that consultation and dialogues are necessary for citizens to have influence over their environment and to reduce dissatisfaction. The dialogues should be held continuously with the right information provided, and the purpose of the dialogues should be made clear. Municipalities should make greater use of planning programs to initiate the detailed planning process with an early dialogue, and detailed plans can be subjected to consultation to a greater extent before they are finalized, with an extended consultation period.

WS://IM: A Software Framework for Multimodal Web Interaction ManagementWilliams, Christopher Stephen 10 June 2004 (has links)
The rise of ubiquitous computing devices has provided the catalyst for the next generation World Wide Web, one that shifts the focus from the desktop computer to mobile devices such as cell phones and PDAs, in an ever increasing range of modalities. Web interaction management in this setting must contend with a plethora of interaction interfaces and a diverse range of content types in addition to helping realize the full potential of multimodality (i.e., supporting flexible and personalized interactions between humans and sites). This thesis presents WS://IM, a new software framework for web interaction management that is capable of supporting multimodal interactions. In addition to presenting a loosely bundled, factorized architecture that supports hyperlink interaction, WS://IM has the unique facilitation for out-of-turn interaction. Out-of-turn interaction is a novel technique that helps realize mixed-initiative interactions between humans and Web sites.
Design methodology, implementation details, and exposition through three implemented case studies are provided. / Master of Science

CONSTRUCTIVE DIALOGS AROUND SUSTAINABILITY AND LOW CARBON LIFESTYLES AMONG SIU STUDENTSOgbeche, Theresa Ornyeaga 01 May 2024 (has links) (PDF)
The urgent need to shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy in combating climate change is often impeded by conflicts and political polarization. Multistakeholder collaboration, which involves diverse participants working together to address complex issues, is a potential solution, but entrenched viewpoints can hinder progress. To address this challenge, we conducted an experiment testing two socio-psychological interventions—grounded in self-affirmation theory and moral foundations theory— designed to foster constructive group dynamics in multi-stakeholder settings. We recruited 1,244 students from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale to participate in an online survey about their opinions on several hypothetical on-campus sustainability initiatives. An initiative that would require students to complete a course in sustainability was found to be the most polarizing. We then invited a second sample of 282 students to discuss their views on this initiative in small groups. Prior to the discussion, each group was randomly assigned to complete one of two intervention exercises that involved a short writing task, or to a control condition. We found that groups assigned to the self-affirmation intervention exhibited significantly more openness-perspective-taking, information processing and agreement, compared to those in the control groups. Participants in groups who completed the moral foundations intervention were more supportive of the initiative overall, but showed no increase in support, openness-perspective-taking, information processing or agreement, compared to other groups. These findings provide preliminary evidence that completing a short self-affirmation intervention prior to engaging discussion has the potential to facilitate constructive dialogs on divisive issues related to sustainability.

Medborgardialogernas roll i samhället och dess planering : En analys av medborgardialogsprocesser i två kommunerEriksson, Sandra January 2023 (has links)
The aim of this study was to examine what role citizen dialogs have in the society and its planning of urban development. Also, what relation citizen dialogs have to social sustainability. Furthermore, find out how two municipalities, Boden and Umeå, with different circumstances work with citizen dialogs. This has been done through the studying of documents from the municipalities. The document studies presented several concepts and methods to work with citizen dialogs and stated that they are of importance for the municipalities. One document, “Så star det till!” is a compilation of an extensive work with citizen dialogs in Umeå municipality. Boden municipality presented on their social media several examples of citizen dialogs. That presentation in itself is a way of communicating and in a sense a dialog with the citizens. To find this a few keywords were used when studying the documents. Three semi-structured interviews were performed with people working at the municipalities. The results from the interviews were processed through a coding scheme and finally analyzed with the help of Fungs (2006) Democracy cube. The interviews showed that the municipalities work alike in many ways and highly value citizen dialogs. The municipalities try out different methods of citizen dialogs and perform them in the preliminary stages of the planning processes. They also aim for the comments, wishes, and needs the citizens voices to have an actual impact on the result of the plans they have taken part in, which contributes to social sustainability. The role of citizen dialogs in the planning process are to some extent dictated in a law but not particularly in detail. Some argue that citizen dialogs give the citizen false power (citizens power which is essential in increasing social sustainability), that they in fact do not have a say in the planning processes. In some cases where the dialogs fail, they instead lead to a decrease in trust for the municipalities and their planners. Another argument is that the citizens should trust the representative democracy. The whole study also shows that citizen dialogs are complex and difficult to adapt and to then include everyone since there is a lot of variation in the personalities and circumstances among the citizens. But in conclusion the citizen dialogs have a future where they seem to get a bigger roll with new methods and impact the social sustainability, majority in a sense of giving the citizens more power to influence their home and surroundings.

Čarodějnictví a inkvizice v literárním a historickém kontextu "El Crotalon" / Witchcraft and Inquisition in "El Crotalón" from a historical-literary perspectiveKožárová, Radka January 2013 (has links)
The master's thesis Witchcraft and Inquisition in literal and historical context of "El Crótalon" offers a look at displays od the Witchcraft in the literature of first half of the 16th century with special attention on classical Greek and Roman literal models. Furthermore, the thesis analyzes the influence of Erasmus'work and impact of the Reformation movement on intelectual panorama as well as on the popular opinion; it concentrates on the evolution of Witchcraft and its growing influence over the social life. It also studies how the changing caracter of the Witchcraft reflected in the literal activity of its times. Second part of the thesis is dedicated to religious aspects of the Witchcraft, its connection with heretical movements and persecutions by the Inquisition.

Orpheus myth has marked literary production of classic authors, and made its presence felt in modern and contemporary literary works as well. On Brazilian literature, Orfeu da Conceição, a dramatic work by Vinícius de Moraes, aimed to promote the dialog between classic greek mythology and Brazilian cultural roots by incorporating orphic elements. Published in 1956, with the subtitle Tragédia Carioca (Carioca Tragedy), it has achieved significant success at the literature and movies scopes. It has stood out by the adaptations and references to original the myth inside the story, which takes place at the shanty towns of Rio de Janeiro city between the decades of 1950 and 1960. Pasquale Aniel Jannini, an Italian researcher and academic, published in 1961 the translation of Orfeu da Conceição into Italian language, under the title Orfeo Negro. By comparing the original text to the translation, it has been composed a corpus of terms and expressions that highlight cultural markers between the texts. After that step, these data had been classified and analyzed by the theoretical model Translation Modalities, by Francis Henrik Aubert (1998). This model consists of a translation research methodology derived from the concepts made by Vinay and Darbelnet concerning technical procedures of translation. One of the main differentials of this model is the possibility of making a quantitative and typological analysis of the highlighted elements on translation. Besides, the methodology selected for the observation of Orfeu da Conceição and Orfeo Negro, understands translation as a communication act between individuals and between social groups as well, taking on its role when comes to cultures, ideologies and different points of view. The purpose of the study of these collected cultural markers attempts to analyze approximations and distances between Orfeu da Conceição e Orfeo Negro, as well as to reflect on particularities and intercultural traits expressed between the texts. By applying the methodology of Aubert (1998) to the identified cultural markers, we have verified a major occurrence of the modality modulation, which has evidenced a predominant domesticating translation, according to the concepts of Venuti (1999). We have also verified a significant occurrence of errors among the most common modalities. Although this translation is considered a domesticating translation, it is relevant the fact that it contains the insertion of foreignizing elements, also according to the conceptualization of Venuti (1999). In our study, we have also aimed to observe if the cycle of translation would complete itself by an eventual Brazilian reader who knows the Italian language, in terms of self-recognition and recognition of his or her own culture on the translated text. For such question, we have reached an affirmative answer, added to the fact that the reading of the original text, Orfeu da Conceição, can be enriched by the contrastive analysis and the contact with the translation Orfeo Negro.

Projection multilingue d'annotations pour dialogues avancésJulien, Simon 12 1900 (has links)
For a few years now, there has been an increasing number of applications allowing advanced dialog interactions with the user. However, the universalization of those systems quickly becomes painful : since they are highly dependent on the original development language, each new language to integrate requires an additionnal and significative time investment. A matter that only gets worse considering quality usually rests on the size of training set.
This project tries to speed up the overall process. It presents various methods to generate multilingual versions of a first functionnal system, using statistical machine translation. Information from the source data is projected to another language in order to create similar target data, which then reduces the upcoming development time.
Many approaches were tested and analysed. In particular, a method that regroups data in clusters before reordering the associated translation candidates shows promising results.
