The purpose of this study was to examine weight loss methods and to determine if seasonal differences existed in energy and nutrient intakes, supplement use and eating behaviors of high school wrestlers. Weight loss history, food and activity records, supplement use and knowledge and bulimic behavior data were collected from twenty wrestlers during the 1998-99 wrestling season and from eleven wrestlers 3 months post wrestling season.This study found that wrestlers practiced extreme weight control behaviors including fasting, food and fluid restriction resulting in inadequate nutrient intakes. No significant seasonal differences were found in energy balance, nutrient intake or supplement use for this study group. There was a significant difference in bulimic behavior post season as compared to peak season, though no wrestler approached the cutoff score for clinical diagnosis of bulimia nervosa.Given the negative effects of extreme weight loss practices and inadequate nutrient intake on performance, nutrition education remains crucial for high school wrestlers. Further research using instruments to measure restrictive behaviors (as was practiced by subjects in this study) would be beneficial. Additionally future studies are needed to continually assess this population of athletes to gauge if changes in extreme behaviors are occurring. / Department of Family and Consumer Sciences

Dietary accumulation of hexabromocyclododecane diastereoisomers in juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss): bioaccumulation/depuration parameters and evidence of bioisomerizationLaw, Kerri L 29 March 2006 (has links)
The major objectives of this research were to examine the bioaccumulation parameters [depuration rates (kd), half life (t1/2) and biomagnification factor (BMF)] of individual isomers of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD, C12H18Br6) in fish and to test the hypothesis of in vivo bioisomerization. This was done by exposing three groups of juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) to food fortified with known concentrations of an individual diastereoisomer (α, β, γ) for 56 days (uptake phase) followed by 112 days (depuration phase) of unfortified food. A fourth group of fish were exposed to unfortified food for the duration of the experiment. Fish (n=4) from all four aquaria were sacrificed on days 0, 7, 14, 56, 63, 70, 112 and 168 and muscle tissue was extracted and analyzed for diastereoisomer concentrations by high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS).
Bioaccumulation of the γ diastereoisomer was linear during the uptake phase while the α and β diastereoisomers were found to increase exponentially with respective doubling times of 14.1 and 20.5 days. Both the β and γ diastereoisomers followed first order depuration kinetics with calculated t1/2’s of 94 ± 25 and 84 ± 51 (± 1 × standard error) days, respectively. The BMF for the α diastereoisomer (BMF = 4.1) was one and a half times greater than the β-diastereoisomer (BMF = 2.6) and about one fifth larger than the γ-diastereoisomer (BMF = 3.6). The large BMF for the α diastereoisomer is consistent with this diastereoisomer dominating higher trophic level organisms in wildlife. Although the BMF of the β diastereoisomer suggests that it will biomagnify, because it is present in small quantities in commercial mixtures it is rarely detected in environmental samples. Results from these studies also provide evidence of bioisomerization of the β and γ diastereoisomers. Most importantly, the α diastereoisomer which was recalcitrant to bioisomerization by juvenile rainbow trout in this study and known to be the dominant diastereosiomer in fish, was bioformed from both the β and γ diastereoisomers. To our knowledge, this is the first report of bioisomerization of a halogenated organic pollutant in biota.

The influence of genotype and environment on the nutritional composition of field peas grown in CanadaStoughton-Ens, Melonie Dawn 07 April 2010 (has links)
Six field pea (Pisum sativum) varieties from five different growing locations in Saskatchewan in the 2006 and 2007 growing years were analyzed to determine the effect of genotype, environment and year on the total dietary fibre, insoluble dietary fibre, soluble dietary fibre, total phenolic content, simple phenolic content and antioxidant activities. Samples were analyzed for dietary fibre using the enzymatic-gravimetric method of fibre analysis in accordance to the AACC method 32-05. Growing location had a very significant effect (p<0.0001) on the IDF, SDF and TDF content. Genotype had a strong effect (p<0.0001) on both IDF and TDF while having no significant effect (p=0.4556) on SDF content. Crop year also displayed a significant effect on SDF and TDF (p<0.0001) while having a smaller effect on IDF content (p=0.0139). Green varieties yielded significantly higher IDF (p=0.0041) and TDF (p=0.0028) than yellow varieties. Significant genotype x location (0.0155) and location x year (p=0.0002) interaction terms were also observed for TDF. The total phenolic contents were assessed using the Folin-Ciocalteu method of total phenolic content (TPC) analysis, while the contents of 10 individual simple phenolic acids were assessed using reversed-phase UPLC. A significant genotype, environment, and genotype by environment (G x E) interaction effect on the TPC was observed. The seed coat colour and growing season did not show a significant effect on the TPC. The UPLC analysis showed that ferulic acid comprised the majority of the phenolic content of the field pea samples. There was also a genotype, seed coat colour, location, growing season and G x E effect on the total simple phenolic acid content. As well, a modified microplate method for antioxidant activity using the free radical DPPH was assessed against the conventional cuvette method based system. Both methods showed that genotype (p<0.05) and location (p<0.05) had a significant effect on antioxidant activity. A larger, significant effect was seen in the genotype by environment (G x E) interaction (p<0.0001) in the 2007 and 2008 growing years. Growing year did not have a significant on antioxidant activity. Although there was some variation in the resulting AOA values between the two methods, these differences were found not to be statistically significant by means of a folded F-Test (p < 0.05), and the AOA between the two methods was highly correlated (R² = 0.8866). This indicates that a microplate may be used in place of cuvettes to determine AOA using the DPPH free radical to increase testing speed while reducing the amount of sample and reagent used in testing. The research performed on the influence of genotype and environment could potentially allow plant breeders, food scientists and nutraceutical manufacturers to manipulate field pea genotypes and growing conditions to attain an ideal nutritional profile for use in functional foods and nutraceuticals.

Assessing the Effect of Selenium on the Life-cycle of Two Aquatic Invertebrates: 'Ceriodaphnia dubia' and 'Chironomus dilutus'Jatar, Muriel M. 22 April 2013 (has links)
Runoff and effluent discharge from mining activities has resulted in elevated concentrations of selenium in aquatic ecosystems. Bioavailability is dependent on chemical speciation. Although dissolved inorganic Se species are not directly toxic to organisms, uptake by primary producers and subsequent biotransformation to organo-selenium species substantially increase risk and bioaccumulation potential, potentially impairing reproduction in high-order organisms. The effects of dietary selenium exposure were assessed in two aquatic invertebrates: Ceriodaphnia dubia and Chironomus dilutus. Two generations of these organisms were exposed to seleniferous algae grown in 0-40 μg L-1 selenate. Dissolved selenate was readily absorbed and concentrated by algal species Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and Chlorella kesslerii. Se had no effect on survival at treated concentrations. Dietary selenium exposures had little effect on reproductive endpoints in either invertebrate species, suggesting that invertebrates have the ability to regulate chronic Se exposures from dietary sources. These results provide valuable information concerning the effects of dietary selenium in aquatic invertebrates.

Mechanisms of action of dietary fatty acids in a syrian hamster model: the role of fatty acid ethanolamides on feeding intake, body composition and energy expenditureLin, Lyyn (Lin) 11 April 2011 (has links)
Replacement of saturated fatty acids (SFA) with monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) or polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) impacts risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, although dietary fatty acids (DFA) have been established as an important factor related to CVD, their exact mechanisms of action have not been clearly established. One of the possible mechanisms is that DFA convert to fatty acid ethanolamides (FAEs), such as oleoylethanolamide (OEA), palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) and arachidonoylethanolamide (AEA), which are thought to associate with lipid signalling, fat oxidation and appetite control. Hence, the objectives of this thesis were to identify the impact of diets containing corn oil, canola oil, DHA + canola oil and fish oil on plasma and organ levels of FAEs as well as energy metabolism and lipid profiles in Syrian Golden hamsters. Forty-eight hamsters were provided diets containing 6% treatment oil for 30 d before sacrifice. Across all diets, in proximal small intestine and liver, animals fed canola oil showed higher (p<0.05) levels of OEA than corn oil and fish oil fed groups, but no difference compared to those fed DHA +canola oil. In plasma, fish oil fed animals showed higher (p<0.05) OEA and PEA levels and lower (p<0.05) AEA levels compared to all other groups. Feed intakes (g/d), oxygen consumption (ml/g) and body composition of total fat (%) and mass (g) did not differ across groups. However, energy expenditure associated with fat oxidation (%) was higher (p<0.01) in canola oil and DHA + canola oil fed hamsters compared to those consuming corn oil and fish oil. Also, body composition of fish oil fed animals showed a lower (p<0.01) total lean mass (g) compared to other three groups and a lower (p<0.01) total mass (g) compared to DHA + canola oil diets, but no difference compared to animals fed the canola oil diet. None of the treatments had any effect on triglyceride (TG) or C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. The fish oil group showed a higher (p<0.01) plasma total cholesterol (TC) levels than all other three groups. No differences existed between DHA + canola oil and fish oil groups in HDL or Non-HDL levels, but these levels were different (p<0.01) compared to corn oil group and canola oil groups. To conclude, different DFA affect whole body energetics and plasma lipid profiles. Also DFA produced marked shifts in plasma and organ levels of OEA, PEA and AEA. These dietary induced shifts in FAEs may translate into discernable changes in energy expenditure and lipid levels which in turn influence CVD risk.

Dietary flaxseed has cardioprotective effects that may be achieved through its rich content of the omega-3 fatty acid, alpha linolenic acid (ALA). We investigated the effects of dietary flaxseed both with and without an atherogenic cholesterol-enriched diet to determine the effects of dietary flaxseed on the expression of the adipose cytokines leptin and adiponectin.
Rabbits were fed one of four diets: a regular (RG) diet, or a regular diet with added 0.5% cholesterol (CH), or 10% ground flaxseed (FX), or both (CF) for 8 weeks. Levels of leptin and adiponectin expression were assessed by RT-PCR in visceral adipose tissue. Consumption of flaxseed significantly increased plasma and adipose levels of ALA. Leptin, but not adiponectin, mRNA expression was lower in CH animals and was elevated in CF animals. Changes in leptin expression were strongly and positively correlated with adipose ALA levels and inversely correlated with levels of en face atherosclerosis. Our data demonstrate that the type of fat in the diet as well as its caloric content can specifically influence leptin expression. The findings support the hypothesis that the beneficial cardiovascular effects associated with flaxseed consumption may be related to a change in leptin expression.

Health impact from pesticide residues in a desert environmentGomes, James January 1998 (has links)
The amount and frequency of use of pesticides in vegetable farming have been shown to be high in the five farming areas in Al-Ain, UAE. The mean usage of all pesticides was high (6.81 g/m2) while the usage of organophosphorus pesticides (2.11 g/m2) was higher compared to the usage of all the other types of pesticides. A number of pesticides banned from use in the developed countries are still used in vegetable farming. The depletion of erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity among farmworkers was positively correlated with the length (p<0.01), frequency(p<0.05) and the use of pesticides (p<0.0001) and inversely correlated with the use of personal protective equipment (p<0.05) and personal hygiene practice (p<0.05). The morbidity profile among farmworkers was positively correlated with the use of pesticides on the farms (p<0.0001) and the non-use of personal protection (p<0.05). The mean concentrations of all pesticide residues (1.19±0.09 mg/kg) and the organophosphorus pesticide residues (1.23±0.22 mg/kg) in the locally grown vegetables exceeded the respective MRLs by 4 and 6 times respectively. The mean concentrations for all pesticides and for organophosphorus pesticide residues in twelve of the thirteen vegetable commodities also exceeded the corresponding MRLs. The mean dietary intakes of all pesticide residues, as a percentage of ADI, were 14% and 17% respectively for the ethnic and farming populations, while corresponding values for organophosphorus pesticides were 37% and 45% respectively. However, the dietary intakes of pesticide residues exceeded the ADI for mixtures for the ethnic (137%) and the farming populations (163%). A review of congenital malformations among ethnic and immigrant non-farming populations has suggested an interplay of genetic, dietary and environmental factors. Methods are proposed to reduce the environmental exposure and the dietary intake of pesticide residues and these include the establishment of a pesticide register, the training of the farmworkers in the proper use of pesticides, the use of protective measures, alternate methods of farming, the proper processing of vegetables prior to consumption and a comprehensive risk assessment of reproductive and genetic toxicity of organophosphorus pesticides.

The composition, biological trafficking and cholesterol-lowering efficacy of sugarcane-derived policosanol supplements /Marinangeli, Christopher P. F. January 2006 (has links)
The cholesterol-lowering efficacy of the original sugarcane-derived Cuban policosanol (OPC) supplement has been attributed to an exclusive policosanol purity and composition. The first objective of the following study was to compare the purity and composition of the OPC and alternative sugarcane derived policosanol (APC) products. Second, to measure blood lipids and policosanol levels in tissues, plasma and feces in hamsters receiving diet fortified with no policosanols, OPC, or an APC (APC1) product. Results indicated that the policosanol purity and composition of the OPC and APC formulations are similar. Lipid levels were not significantly different between groups. Policosanols were undetectable in the plasma and tissues of any animals following policosanol supplementation. Policosanols were excreted at a higher rate in animals consuming APC1. Sugarcane-derived policosanols are not an efficacious cholesterol-lowering therapy. The purity and relative percent composition of the OPC supplement cannot account for its efficacy as a lipid lowering agent.
