Technological Change and Employee Motivation in a Telecom Operations TeamUde, Samuel Ogbonnaya 01 January 2015 (has links)
Some managers view innovative product development and convenient service delivery as necessary to business survival. However, unmotivated employees might negate any gains from the use of innovation. The purpose of this correlational study, grounded in diffusion of innovation theory, was to assess the relationship between creativity and support for innovation, resistance to change, and organizational commitment and employee motivation. A random sample of 81 information technology (IT) professionals from telecom service centers completed an online survey. Simultaneous multiple linear regression was the statistical technique used to analyze these data. The results indicated a poor model with low R2 to significantly predicted employee motivation, F (3, 78) = 5.481, p < .002, R2 = .174. In the final model, support for creativity and innovation were significant contributors to employees' motivation. Resistance to change was not a significant predictor to employees' motivation. Although the p-value was significant, the R2 was low and indicated a poor model fit. Future researchers might consider incorporating additional variables to make the model more useful. The implications for positive social change include the potential to enhance telecom managers' understanding of the factors that affect employee motivation; however, managers should consider incorporating additional variables specific to the work environment. Ultimately, a manager's ability to motivate workers is vital for implementing change, particularly when the introduction of technological innovation frequently occurs within an industry.

Small Business Profitability Strategies in the Music Recording IndustryMurray-Noel, Jeanelle Lemol 01 January 2018 (has links)
With the rise of digital technologies, consumers can stream music content, which has made it more difficult for music companies to be profitable. Small business owners in the music recording industry in the West Indies have found this trend particularly challenging, affecting their profitability. This multiple case study explored the adoption of disruptive technologies by small business owners in the music recording industry to increase profitability. The research population included 5 small business owners in the music recording industry in the West Indies who successfully adapted to the changes in the industry's business model and whose businesses are profitable. Christensen's theory of disruptive innovation served as the conceptual framework for this study. Data from face-to-face, semistructured, in-depth interviews, observations, and analysis of internal company documents were collected and triangulated. Within-case analysis was used to understand the general meaning of the participants' responses. Each case was described and themes were identified. Cross-case analysis was used to compare the 5 case descriptions and identify 5 cross-cutting themes. These 5 themes included focus on live performances, focus on marketing and building a brand, adopt innovations in all functions of the business, diversify income streams, and adopt vertical integration strategies. The implications for positive social change include the potential to increase the profitability of small businesses in the recording industry in the West Indies by sharing the strategies emerging from the study. Profitable businesses can lead to improved livelihoods of the small business owners and their families.

A modular multi-agent framework for innovation diffusion in changing business environments: conceptualization, formalization and implementationJohanning, Simon, Scheller, Fabian, Abitz, Daniel, Wehner, Claudius, Bruckner, Thomas 11 February 2022 (has links)
Understanding how innovations are accepted in a dynamic and complex market environment is a crucial factor for competitive advantage. To understand the relevant factors for this diffusion and to predict success, empirically grounded agent-based models have become increasingly popular in recent years. Despite the popularity of these innovation diffusion models, no common framework that integrates their diversity exists. This article presents a flexible, modular and extensible common description and implementation framework that allows to depict the large variety of model components found in existing models. The framework aims to provide a theoretically grounded description and implementation framework for empirically grounded agent-based models of innovation diffusion. It identifies 30 component requirements to conceptualize an integrated formal framework description. Based on this formal description, a java-based implementation allowing for flexible configuration of existing and future models of innovation diffusion is developed. As a variable decision support tool in decision-making processes on the adoption of innovations the framework is valuable for the investigation of a range of research questions on innovation diffusion, business model evaluation and infrastructure transformation.

Assessing the Climate Impact and Expansion Potential of On-Demand Storage in the Housing and Construction Sector : A case study on Vinden AB / Bedömning av Klimatpåverkan och Expansionspotential för On-Demand-lagring inom Bostads- och ByggsektornPerneby, Mattias January 2023 (has links)
The housing and construction sector is responsible for 40% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, making it crucial for achieving the Paris Agreement goals. One of the most effective ways to mitigate emissions in this sector is by optimizing the use of existing building stock and minimizing the construction of new houses. Through enhanced space efficiency, the on-demand storage service has the potential to decrease the demand for new construction and thereby reduce GHG emissions by converting existing attic spaces in inner-city areas to additional apartments. However, the service introduces additional emissions from its operations and for the service to have a significant impact on reducing construction needs, it must expand on a large scale and be integrated in the housing stock. The aim is to quantify the operational emissions and potential emissions avoided through a theoretical large-scale expansion of the on-demand storage service, to determine the potential net impact. Secondly, it aims to explore the opportunities and barriers to the concept's large-scale expansion within the housing and construction sector. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are utilized. The quantitative approach involves modeling emissions and potential reductions for large-scale expansion, while the qualitative method consists of 12 interviews with various stakeholder groups. Rogers' diffusion of innovation theory guides the analysis of qualitative findings. The results indicate that the on-demand storage service can potentially reduce overall GHG emissions if implemented on a large scale, due to the potential emissions avoided surpassing the operational emissions associated with the service by a large margin. The utilization of collective storage in warehouses, which offers superior space efficiency compared to traditional attic storage, is the key factor behind this outcome. By connecting this service to an entire apartment building, there is an opportunity to repurpose existing attic storage spaces into additional new apartments, thereby decreasing the need for constructing new buildings and effectively mitigating emissions in the housing and construction sector. However, the diffusion rate of the concept is assessed as modest due to significant barriers, particularly current regulations and a lack of market pull. While there are noteworthy opportunities such as potential economic benefits for customers and the ability to function as a circular economy platform, these opportunities are not as prominent as the existing barriers. This study represents an initial exploration of the on-demand storage concept, emphasizing its eco-potential and the need for regulatory revisions. It provides an assessment of the climate impact, barriers, and opportunities for the expansion of the storage concept within the housing and construction sector. However, further academic and practical work is required to better understand the concept's interaction with cities and society. On-demand storage has the potential to enhance space efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of housing and construction. Continued exploration of this concept paves the way for a more sustainable and efficient future in urban living.

Digital Inclusion on the Agenda : An analysis of the final stage of diffusion of electronic identification in Sweden / Digital inkluering på agendan : En analys av användandet och spridningen av elektroniska identitetshandlingar i SverigeEnglund, Jessica, Hådén, Evelina January 2019 (has links)
As digitalisation continues to spread, the impact technology has on society is evident. In Sweden, digitalisation has led to the end of analog options forcing individuals to rapidly adapt to new technologies. For this reason, the diffusion of electronic identification (eID) as a critical technology occurred at an accelerated rate. However, a segment of society remains without access to this innovation. In this study, qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with influential eID actors in Sweden to identify factors that impact the diffusion process, with a focus on late adoption. The result of this study shows that collaborations, accountability, biases, compatible technologies, and infrastructure technologies influence the spread of eID. These factors can be identified at an actor level but interact and consolidate on a system level. The above-mentioned findings have implications for innovation diffusion and digital divide theories as well as policy decisions regarding infrastructure technology and the practical requirements for adopting to eID.

Äldre och den nya världen : En kvalitativ innehållsanalys av medieanvändande hos den äldre generationen / The old generation and the New World - A qualitative content analysis of media usage of the older generationWiee, Magdalena January 2013 (has links)
Abstract Title: The old generation and the New World - A qualitative content analysis of media usage of the older generation Keywords:Digital natives, digital immigrants, diffusion of innovation, content analysis This study has its focus on how the older generation looks at today's media society and the use of today's media. Through a method of qualitative content analysis based on questionnaires, the aim is to examine what the older generation thinks about today's media, how they use them, and whether there are differences in groups according to age and previous work. The study selected theories bases on Marc Prenskys idea of digital natives, digital immigrants and Everett M Rogers book on "Diffusion of Innovation". These theories take up the difference on digital natives and digital immigrants and the spread of new technological ideas takes place through communication over different channels in time among causes people in a social system. The result of the study shows that many older people are good at making use of today's media, but also that many may feel alienation of today's media society. Development has proceeded rapidly in recent years and for the older generation it's sometimes hard to keep up. The conclusion of the study is that the older generation may need more help to discover how today's media can facilitate everyday life and enrich it with more communication despite the fact that it takes place through a screen.

Swedish Consumers' Perception of Virtual Power Plants : A mixed-method study of VPPsPettersson, Filip, Batti, Roni January 2023 (has links)
The phenomenon of Virtual Power Plant (VPP) has gained increased attention in many parts of the world in recent years. In 2022 the European Union, in response to the rising energy prices as well as the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, set a goal of speeding up the process of creating a digital energy system (European Commission, 2022, p. 20). VPP is the/a solution to the problem, and the EU is set to start its deployment of a common European energy data space no later than 2024 (European Commission, 2022, p. 3). Previous academic research on VPP has been conducted on the technical aspects of the phenomenon and the adoption of VPP has not been approached from a consumer standpoint. We therefore identified a research gap, since, to the best of our knowledge, no qualitative or quantitative research has been conducted in the area of acceptance of VPP by individuals or households. We could see that there is a need for this type of research due to the goals set by the European Union, and the lack of current research. To fulfill the purpose of our study, we draw on the literatures on supplier switching in homogenous markets, innovation adoption, and technology acceptance to develop a conceptual framework and further empirically extend it via a mixed-method approach. The qualitative component of the study consists of three online on-on-one interviews, conducted with the help of a discussion guide. The interviewees selected were considered to be appropriate participants, suited for our study. The interviews gave us a deeper understanding of how VPP came across to the Swedish consumer, as well as how it was perceived by them. The quantitative study was done by the means of a survey of 75 respondents, enabling us to conduct a set of linear regressions in order to test our hypotheses. Through our mixed-method study, we were able to develop an integrative framework, showcasing factors related to Swedish consumers’ intention to partake in VPP. We could conclude that Swedish consumers see value in VPP, and that there is curiosity related to the topic which indicates that there is an interest to explore and partake in VPP. We further discuss a range of recommendations to policy-makers and energy providers, as well as the potential contributions of VPP to the two important social aspects: sustainability and energy security.

Exploring the Lower Third: The Use, Innovations, and Future of Snipes in the U.S. Television Industry.Sharp, Aaron M 08 May 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Digital video recorders have given a growing number of viewers the ability to skip television commercials. In an effort to combat ad-skipping, television providers and advertisers are looking at ways to embed advertising into the video content; one way this can be accomplished is with graphic overlays known as snipes. Little is known about how content providers use snipes and what research they have conducted. This study is qualitative and uses long telephone interviews with 8 respondents from various cable television network and broadcast affiliate stations; examining the characteristics of innovation, as found in Rogers's (1995) diffussion of innovation theory. One discovery is that some cable networks are taking measures to ensure that snipes do not appear during emotional moments in the narrative. The study is the first piece of academic research dedicated to understanding how snipes are used and stands as a foundation for future research on the subject.

#DoINeedSocialMedia: Social Media in Local Political ElectionsKarzen, Brittany K 01 June 2015 (has links) (PDF)
More research is needed to be able to fully understand the role that social media plays in elections, specifically in local elections. Candidates need to understand how it works and how they can effectively use this new communication medium. By exploring Diffusion of Innovation Theory, Social Information Processing Theory, and the Two-Way Symmetrical Model of communications this study sought to answer one overarching question: how should a candidate employ social media in a local election? This qualitative, single case study explores the 2014 recall and general election in Yorba Linda, California. Councilman Tom Lindsey and candidate Matt Palmer are the primary subjects of study. Observations were made through analysis of documentation, interviews, and participant and direct observation. The researcher was employed as the campaign manager for both Lindsey's and Palmer's campaigns. The findings support the use of social media in local campaigns on a case by case basis. Determining use depends on the demographics of the voters and the abilities of the candidate. The data suggests that social media needs to be part of comprehensive strategy that includes traditional communication tools. Observations from the case study illustrate the need for candidates to engage in two-way communication that is monitored and regulated. This study begins to establish social media as a tool that candidates can use to inexpensively reach voters in a way that showcases the candidate's personality and allows them to connect on a personal level with constituents. Social media will play a role in politics at all levels.

The organization's way to a successful digitization : A study of change management within a large Swedish construction companyFryklund, Elin, Djurestål, Ina January 2018 (has links)
According to Andersson, et al. (2008), the construction industry has experienced low productivity, and the lack of digital use in the industry has been mentioned as one of the main reasons. The purpose of this study is to find what is required of an organization to change employees' working methods to become more digital. The study has been limited to investigating a large Swedish construction company, that will be referred to as Construction Company for the remainder of this thesis. The empirical study is based on a case study comprising an interview study and questionnaire survey. The theory and empirical study identifies factors that influence the spread of innovations within an organization and the individuals' tendency to change. These concern the structure and culture within the organization as well as the support and resources available within the organization for digitization. The Construction Company invest heavily in digitalization and has a great willingness to change employees' working methods to become more digital. Employees, on the other hand, experience that resources are missing to meet the construction company's vision. The authors have observed the great influence that organizational culture and local project cultures have on the company's digitization work. Local cultures can counteract the organizational culture. Individuals' tendency to change affects the ability of diffusion of innovations within the company. It is important that key people have the right attitude towards digitization. To benefit from the spread of innovation and bring in all types of individuals, it is important that the organization has a clarity in its digital strategy. It is also important that the organization creates an environment where the digital change contains as few setbacks as possible when individuals are to change their way of working. Finally, it is important to look at the innovation itself and its level of user-friendliness. An implementation of standardized programs, where specific programs are designated by the organization, would streamline work and reduce the degree of learning duplication.
