Digital Tools, Distributed Making and Design

Pfeiffer, Diane 04 February 2010 (has links)
Given the current social and business trends with digital fabrication and communication technologies, change in the manner and means of physical object production is clearly on the horizon. Recent peripheral projects show how access to digital fabrication and communication tools pull information for making toward the user, and enable the distribution of information and product outward. They also demonstrate vibrant user innovation in smaller scale projects for both personal and commercial applications. These current trends and peripheral projects are used to help locate where design and designers may find areas of growth in a potentially less-centralized, and more varied landscape of product development and production in the future. / Master of Science

Automation of the cutting and bending process of reinforcing bars for concrete structures integrated to the BIM process.

Maciel, Alex Roda 29 May 2018 (has links)
The consolidation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) possibly contributes to the increase of the efficiency in the construction industry, by fostering new workflows and data reuse throughout projects life cycle. Despite the potential for integration and automation associated with BIM, the use of the digital information contained in the model to facilitate prefabrication of construction products is still incipient. The digital fabrication finds obstacles in sectors that act in a segregated manner, henceforth needs standard adoption to allow reuse of the information generated in the phases prior to production. In this context, it was analyzed the use of digital fabrication applied to the industrial processing of reinforcement bars for concrete structures (rebar cutting and bending). Although the fabricators who act in this sector already have support to the digital interface with other agents, the supply chain configuration adopted by the Brazilian market, as well as the traditional paper-based processes employed, promote the occurrence of \"islands of automation\" connected by manual data transfer. In order to reduce the need for manual intervention for data re-interpretation and re-entry, it is proposed to use the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) data schema to promote the digital interface between the reinforcing bar supply chain stakeholder\'s. This work aims to present an IFC-based technical solution to the fabricator\'s information requirements by means of the Information Delivery Manual (IDM) and Model View Definition (MVD) standards. On the basis of the exchange requirements specified by rebar fabricator through IDM method, it is presented the IFC schema subset entailed and how this information can be mapped in order to allow the use of IFC on the cut & bend rebar supply chain. Finally, the technical solution was documented in an MVD and validate with the ifcDoc tool. After conducting validation tests based on the IFC4 schema, it was verified the viability to recover the data contained in the model. However, the lack of commercial tools that support such functionality has also been identified.

Entre-Telas: o designer de moda nas imediações da cultura maker e indústria 4.0 / Inbetween: the fashion designer at the intersection of the maker culture and the 4.0 industry

Pires, Rafaela Blanch 07 May 2018 (has links)
In a phase of deep transformations with new technologies that impact the productive processes in the fashion field. In this context, the fashion designer finds himself between narratives devired from the the maker culture (following counter-culture movements, claiming for autonomy with the Arts & Crafts movement, DIY, later the free software movement, open-source) and the 4.0 industry (scale, ultrapersonalized, distributed production based on data). Both areas have the interest on digital fabrication in common, therefore, the required knowledge for projects developed in these spaces spreads rapidly. Yet, impulses, narratives and initial values cultuated by the maker movement seems to be mixed and dispersed (NASCIMENTO, S.; PÓLVORA, A.; 2016) while agency keep happening. The present investigation\'s aim is to present the paths followed by the fashion designer immersed in a cultural context and in the operational digital fabrication\'s context in order to find which are the best actions to be taken. In this sense, digital fabrication tools such as 3D printers, 3D scanners, laser cutter machines can be used to bring more autonomy, accessibility, equality in the relations and in the ways of producing for fashion designers in Brasil.

Graph Rotation Systems for Physical Construction of Large Structures

Xing, Qing 2011 December 1900 (has links)
In this dissertation, I present an approach for physical construction of large structures. The approach is based on the graph rotation system framework. I propose two kinds of physical structures to represent the shape of design models. I have developed techniques to generate developable panels from any input polygonal mesh, which can be easily assembled to get the shape of the input polygonal mesh. The first structure is called plain woven structures. I have developed the ?projection method? to convert mathematical weaving cycles on any given polygonal mesh to developable strip panels. The width of weaving strips varies so that the surface of the input model can be covered almost completely. When these strip panels are assembled together, resulting shape resembles to a weaving in 3-space. The second structure is called band decomposition structures. I have developed a method to convert any given polygonal mesh into star-like developable elements, which we call vertex panels. Assembling vertex panels results in band decomposition structures. These band decomposition structures correspond to 2D-thickening of graphs embedded on surfaces. These band decompositions are contractible to their original graph. In a 2D-thickening, each vertex thickens to a polygon and each edge thickens to a band. Within the resulting band decomposition, each polygon corresponds to a vertex and each band corresponds to an edge that connects two vertex polygons. Since the approach is based on graph rotation system framework, the two structures do not have restrictions on design models. The input mesh can be of any genus. The faces in the input mesh can be triangle, quadrilateral, and any polygon. The advantages of this kind of large physical structure construction are low-cost material and prefabrication, easy assemble. Our techniques take the digital fabrication in a new direction and create complex and organic 3D forms. Along the theme of architecture this research has great implication for structure design and makes the more difficult task of construction techniques easier to understand for the fabricator. It has implications to the sculpture world as well as architecture.

Embodied, Embedded, Emergent: New Digital Strategies for Cross Laminated Timber Fabrication and Use

Whalen, Mark 09 July 2013 (has links)
This thesis focuses on analyzing Cross Laminated Timber manufacture and use for the purpose of suggesting ways to enrich involved technology through the further application of digital fabrication techniques. Framed within the context of making and craft, product and processes are explored to search for opportunities where reevaluating current production methods may arise. It is also in this context that concepts of embodied/ embedded information and emergence are employed to suggest ideas for rethinking CLT, its fabrication and use. Based on research findings, new CLT panel types are prototyped and their required fabrication approaches proposed. The results are applied to a building design for a site in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Matière en acte : les rapports entre conception et matérialité dans la production matérielle numérique / Matter in actuality : the relationship between design and materiality within digital material production

Lallemand, Ianis 05 December 2017 (has links)
Recent developments in digital fabrication practices across the fields of art, architecture and design have inspired the notion of a “new materiality” — a rethinking of our relationship to the physical world in light of the ever-increasing convergence between robotics, computation and materials science. Yet, the very use of computer-controlled machinery remains, more often than not, envisioned in terms of a passive understanding of matter. This thesis aims at offering an updated vision of the relationship between materiality and design, by developing new production schemes allowing for an expression of material agency. Criticizing the traditional idea of a prescriptive, deterministic link between design and fabrication, the proposed argument reframes authority as a shared resource, spread through a network of productive and autonomous agents. The thesis' main outcomes consist in a set of practical methodologies as well as an encompassing conceptual framework, which may both be reinvested by other practitioners. Informed by and grounded in practice, the research builds on five experiments, adopting a prospective approach towards programming and digital fabrication. Drawing on authors like Gilbert Simondon and Andrew Pickering, the accompanying conceptualization allows for a reflexive discussion of the thesis' practical developments, while situating them in respect to such historical precedents as non standard production and cybernetics.
