Codesigning a Mobile Interface for Travel Planning on Digital Maps

Yu-Shen Ho (7040675) 16 August 2019 (has links)
Nowadays, increasing numbers of people do travel research on their smartphones. More precisely, digital maps provide locational information, which is important during the planning process. However, smartphones are restricted by their small screen size, resulting in fragmented information delivery; also, the design of digital maps lacks features. The aims of this study are to investigate users’ travel-planning behavior on smartphones, identify the pain points and missing contexts when using digital maps on smartphones, and provide design guidelines for future digital map design. The study was done by conducting a travel-planning activity and a codesign workshop to bring users into the design process, promote in-depth discussion, and explore a new design possibility for digital maps with users. The results showed that people’s goals when planning travel include reducing their workload, improving effectiveness, and ensuring flexibility. People use digital maps to support not only information searching but also information compiling, including saving locations and routes. In addition, several difficulties have been pointed out: cross-platform planning, information hierarchy, and retrieval on digital maps.

Where have we been, where are we now and where could we go? : Re imagining the accessibility of digital maps

Veskoukis, Alexandra January 2021 (has links)
By investigating digital maps with an inclusive- and research through design approach, this research project aims on answering the research question: how can a digital map convey accessibility information of a route before the journey without the need of special adaptation? The research question involves two issues, how digital maps can convey information about a route and what accessibility information of a route is.With Rätt från början and the Swedish Agency for Accessible Media as stakeholders, a recruitment of participants with different capabilities, preference, characteristics, and needs was completed to explore how the participants use digital maps and perceive accessibility of the physical world by using the methods of interviews and design probes. The design process resulted in prototypes of a digital map that affords exploration without displaying normative standards of accessibility by using a design strategy of presenting the world as it is through audio-haptic and visual communication.

De Mercator ao Googlemaps: Mapas colaborativos digitais no ensino e aprendizagem de geografia / From Mercator to Googlemaps: Collaboratives digital maps as used in teaching and learning geography.

Rafael Arosa de Mattos 27 August 2014 (has links)
Recently digital information and communication technologies have been promoting changes in the way maps are produced, which can be a source of renewal in geographic education in times of cyberculture. In recent years, applications and websites geared toward online mapping became more a form of expression of digital culture. This dissertation consists of an investigation into the possible mediation of multimedia and collaborative cartography, constructed through the internet interfaces in the teaching and learning of geography. The collaborative digital maps are cartographic representations produced interactive, decentralized and networked. They allow the insertion of georeferenced collaborative hypermedia contents (texts, photos, videos) and constitute an alternative and potentially subversive form of cartographic production. The survey - conducted with ninth graders in a school of Itaboraí - took from the development of a mapping project in the area where students live. The results revealed that these cartographic practices can help overcome the current "malaise" in the relationship between youth and school culture, and to promote the construction of pedagogical practices committed to the formation of critical and engaged citizens.

Important Factors for Designing Digital Maps from a Marketing Perspective

Naoko Kihara Unknown Date (has links)
The digital revolution influences our lifestyle and way of processing information in various fields. The Internet is a typical example of how it changes our lifestyle, the way people do business, the way people collect information, and the way people communicate. Map, concept of location, would be one of the most distinct areas, where people would more likely change the way of accomplishing some tasks. Digital maps would solve the major problems of traditional maps. Now, some web sites provide digital map services using GIS technology. This kind of digital map service is gradually spreading to ordinary people. Since the concept of digital mapping itself is not widely known, there are some related studies from the technology aspect of digital maps, but not the marketing point of view. Therefore, the author was motivated to find out successful factors, which are helpful for all related vendors and service providers to design and provide digital map products/services in the most effective manner. The author assumes that the successful factors of digital map are similar between big cities where not only life styles but also the infrastructure of telecommunication and traffic are almost the same. This thesis reviews in detail the situation in Japan as well as Taiwan, followed by an in-depth study of Taiwan through personal interviews and questionnaire survey. This study focuses mainly on private uses in metropolitan areas. In this thesis, both qualitative and quantitative methods are employed. First, the author asked key persons to have a mixed style interview (using both closed and opened questions) so that this paper can includes the key person’s ideas and feeling in depth. Then, the author conducted the questionnaire survey to obtain quantitative data for eight different groups of people. This eight hypothesized clusters were formed with the considerations of sex, age, and status. There was no such a relevant study to specify the most differentiating variable for the digital map in the past at the time this study was conducted. Therefore, this paper used Chi-analysis to find out the key variables, which influence consumer and user behavior toward digital map. From this study and observation, the following variables are selected for investigation in this study: sex; age; education level; type of job; income level; family cycle, and eight hypothesized clusters. From the result, Taiwanese indicted a strong desire for all four types of digital map services specified in this paper. Only 2 out of 109 (1.8%) are not interested in the services of map and searching a specific genre of service. Everybody wants to use other two services. The connecting method to use larger LCD (20%) was also wanted. Interests on wireless Internet map services were also strong. The top three variables, which indicated significance to many questions, were 8 hypothesized group, age, and job type. Overall needs of digital map in the metropolitan area of Taiwan (Taipei) were recognized by this study. Correlational studies among other metropolitan areas and the one between city and rural areas are left for further studies.

Vícekriteriální návrh pokrytí území rádiovým signálem / Radio Network Multiobjective Design

Víteček, Petr January 2014 (has links)
This thesis deals with radio network design for a chosen part of a map. Here map is represented by digital map file, which was created within the project DEM. First step is to calculate distances between points in chosen map. With help of optimization algorithms, appropriate position of transceiver in the map and parameters of radio systems are determined, also final coverage by radio signal, represented by intensity of electric field or received power in whole map. The optimization algorithm is used to find the best solution in terms of input parameters (e.g. power of transmitter, height of mast) and resulting coverage of land by radio signal.
