Creating People and Places : How the journalistic narrative shapes our image of the world

Nylund, Jukka January 2006 (has links)
<p>Media is one of the most important gateways to the world beyond for most people. Every day we are presented with images of distant places and peoples and the events they are a part of. During the years the way these news events have been presented to the public has changed but still they create images within us of these distant places and peoples.</p><p>This paper discusses how the journalistic narrative is built up based on some theories describing media and how is used and/or uses the society it is a part of. The paper tries to answer questions on how the image of the distant places and peoples is built up, based on these theories and discussions within the journalistic community.</p><p>The process from source to print is complex. Several part takers have an interest in putting out their view of the world to the public. This creates a complex web of dependencies between the media and different groups in society. In the end the image presented is a side effect of how the journalistic text is built up, where the narrative has to be firmly rooted with individuals and places to gain acceptance with the public, and where people and places described often become artifacts, rooted in very specific events.</p>

All different, as unique : An essay in comparative literature based on the concept of “we and them”

Öster, Sara January 2013 (has links)

Recognizing human activities from low-resolution videos

Chen, Chia-Chih, 1979- 01 February 2012 (has links)
Human activity recognition is one of the intensively studied areas in computer vision. Most existing works do not assume video resolution to be a problem due to general applications of interests. However, with continuous concerns about global security and emerging needs for intelligent video analysis tools, activity recognition from low-resolution and low-quality videos has become a crucial topic for further research. In this dissertation, We present a series of approaches which are developed specifically to address the related issues regarding low-level image preprocessing, single person activity recognition, and human-vehicle interaction reasoning from low-resolution surveillance videos. Human cast shadows are one of the major issues which adversely effect the performance of an activity recognition system. This is because human shadow direction varies depending on the time of the day and the date of the year. To better resolve this problem, we propose a shadow removal technique which effectively eliminates a human shadow cast from a light source of unknown direction. A multi-cue shadow descriptor is employed to characterize the distinctive properties of shadows. Our approach detects, segments, and then removes shadows. We propose two different methods to recognize single person actions and activities from low-resolution surveillance videos. The first approach adopts a joint feature histogram based representation, which is the concatenation of subspace projected gradient and optical flow features in time. However, in this problem, the use of low-resolution, coarse, pixel-level features alone limits the recognition accuracy. Therefore, in the second work, we contributed a novel mid-level descriptor, which converts an activity sequence into simultaneous temporal signals at body parts. With our representation, activities are recognized through both the local video content and the short-time spectral properties of body parts' movements. We draw the analogies between activity and speech recognition and show that our speech-like representation and recognition scheme improves recognition performance in several low-resolution datasets. To complete the research on this subject, we also tackle the challenging problem of recognizing human-vehicle interactions from low-resolution aerial videos. We present a temporal logic based approach which does not require training from event examples. At the low-level, we employ dynamic programming to perform fast model fitting between the tracked vehicle and the rendered 3-D vehicle models. At the semantic-level, given the localized event region of interest (ROI), we verify the time series of human-vehicle spatial relationships with the pre-specified event definitions in a piecewise fashion. Our framework can be generalized to recognize any type of human-vehicle interaction from aerial videos. / text

Joveski, Bojan 18 December 2012 (has links) (PDF)

Virtualios mokymo aplinkos Moodle įrankių lyginamoji analizė - tyrimas / Comparative analysis – research of Moodle virtual learning environment tools

Ponomariov, Konstantin 05 June 2006 (has links)
Summary Distant Learning (DL) in Lithuania is rapidly developing, various Virtual Learning Environments (VLE) emerge. The most popular of them are WebCT, Moodle, Atutor. Therefore I have decided to analyse Moodle Virtual Learning Environment as it is widely used by many institutions of high and secondary education. Purpose of the paper To analyse the tools of virtual learning environments, in order to select those that could be added to Moodle environment and help achieve efficient usage of Moodle in creating and providing DL courses. Objectives: a) Analyse the concept and functions of VLE. b) Provide general analysis of VLE. c) Provide a comparative analysis of Moodle, File3, WebCT environments. d) Determine which functions should be added to VLE Moodle. e) Integrate the selected tools to Moodle environment. f) Prepare methodical material of Moodle environment for teachers and students. Methods of the study: a) Search and systemization of information. b) Analysis and generalization of scientific and informational material. c) Data processing. d) Comparative data analysis. In order to achieve the set objective I have compared Moodle and WebCT, which have proven to be the most popular VLE, as well as File3 – an average level VLE created in Finland. By comparing these VLE becomes apparent that Moodle VLE contains a number of various teaching and handling tools however the distributed versions of this program are short of some tools: they have no internal e-mail, which is... Man Pain in the Man Booker Prize: A Quantitative Approach to Contemporary Canon Formation

Powell, Caitlin E 01 January 2014 (has links)
This project examines the corpus of novels that have been nominated for the Man Booker Prize and, using the prize as a creator of a contemporary literary canon, attempts to develop a model of a contemporary best text. Using the distant reading techniques proposed by digital humanities scholar Franco Moretti to track and graph a variety of formal and structural variables across the corpus of nominees, it becomes apparent that the kind of novel that typically wins the Booker Prize and thus the kind of novel that qualifies as a contemporary best text fits a distinct mold. These novels are solemn, serious texts written by British or Irish men, and the stories they tell concern young British or Irish men struggling, often alone, in pain, and under the threat of impending age, through a brutal, violent, and amoral world.

The first will highlight that resemble the manifestations of the gift in the Distant Support Project (PAD). The second aim is discuss the gift between strangers on the concept of Jacques Godbout and its manifestation in Distance Support Project (PAD). And the third is demonstrate the importance of gift for the structuring, maintenance and stainability of PAD. The dissertation will show how the project helps to generate links which is the main proposal of the gift, possibility also contributing to improve and maintain the project itself. Even being based in an unique initiative, many third sector organizations work with similar proposals expanding the findings of the work to these as well. Based on a case-study of the project in the municipality Salvador (Bahia) it is addressed to the sponsor showing that the gift is not only forwarded to the sponsor. It is a two way relationship. The Brazilian position of a no further supported country from international cooperation projects but as a donor country or player push managements to create strategies in order to mobilize Brazilian families to continue the project that should consider the gift. The work shows invisible relationships (gifted ones) that deserve to be observed.

January 2005 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / This study analyses the process of implementation of Projeto Veredas - Formação Superior de Professores, as a public policy, aiming to identify how much this long distant program contributes to the formation of professors at public schools, under the jurisdiction of the 31ª Superintedência Regional de Ensino de Poços de Caldas. It also analyses the project within the scope of administration, trying to identify its perspective linked to the formation of professors policies implemented in the state and in the country in the 1990s, in which by processes of capitalism accumulation, education reforms done by the present policies focus on the formation of teachers at basic levels. This definition is linked to the requests of the economic and social changes resulting from globalization, scientific and technological advances and the role that the job field plays in the social sphere. In order to do so, besides a reference study about the issue, the formation policies, in Brazil and in the State of Minas Gerais, at the present decade were analyzed, aiming to have an overview from the actions and programs which arose, giving special emphasis to Projeto Veredas. The field research done with professors, municipal secretaries, regional education superintendent, coordinators who are responsible for the region of Poços de Caldas, searched its conceptions and expectations, and how the project, as a public policy, plays its role. Reviewing all the aspects, we tried to answer all the questions which arose, as well as all the new ones and challenges. The result of this study reveals that Projeto Veredas - Formação Superior de Professores contributed, as a public policy, to confirm the fragility of some specific formation of professors programs which are unprovided of continuity and reafirm the urgent necessity to transform the National Professor Formation Policy in an ever lasting program, in which the effective participation of entities and educators is guarante / Mestre
