Exposure to Parental Conflict and Anxiety in Justice-Involved YouthEwing, Logan B 01 January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore the link between exposure to domestic violence (DV) and the presence of symptoms of anxiety in a population of justice-involved juveniles. The categories of DV were broken down into verbal abuse and physical abuse, along with a third category of juveniles that witnessed both forms of abuse within their households. This study compared the prevalence of anxiety in juveniles when faced with the different instances of DV through the use of data collected from a longitudinal study conducted by the Pathways to Desistance Project. The goal of the study was to further understand how the witnessing of specific forms of DV may result in a higher rate of symptoms of anxiety displayed within juveniles. This study will allow for professionals to better identify sources of anxiety and trends found in juvenile offenders exhibiting such internalized behavior, which may have been as a result of witnessing DV in their pasts. This study may lead to better handling and identification of anxiety disorders and symptoms in children and act as a red flag for potential domestic abuse in the child's household. This study may also allow for a higher likelihood of assistance given to children at a young age in order to prevent the development of behaviors they witness within the household and may reflect in the future.

" They're out to take away your sanity": An ecological investigation of gaslighting in intimate partner violenceHailes, Helen Paula January 2023 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Lisa A. Goodman / The term “gaslighting” has become increasingly ubiquitous in popular media, from self-help literature to political analysis (Carpenter, 2018; Sarkis, 2018; Stern, 2018). It is also beginning to gain traction in the medical and mental health establishment. For instance, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now includes gaslighting under its definition of psychological aggression (Breiding, Basile, Smith, Black, & Mahendra, 2015). However, empirical research on this topic lags behind popular discourse. There is desperate need for definition clarity and empirical evidence of this uniquely epistemic form of harm, otherwise the term gaslighting runs the risk of becoming vague, diffuse, and almost meaninglessness. Gaslighting in intimate partner violence (IPV) is the original and paradigmatic case of gaslighting (Cukor, 1944; Hamilton, 2015). A small handful of recent studies have investigated gaslighting in this context, and more general psychological abuse literature has hinted at it by other names (e.g. Bhatti et al., 2021; Ferraro, 2006; Sweet, 2019; Tolman, 1992). However, the present study represents the first systematic, empirical, psychological investigation of gaslighting in IPV. Study aims were to illuminate the tactics, effects, and long-term implications of gaslighting in IPV, as well as ecological factors that may influence survivor experiences. Fifteen IPV survivors were interviewed about their gaslighting experiences, and data were analyzed using qualitative descriptive methods. Three clusters of findings emerged: Survivors described (1) the gaslighting process, (2) their long-term responses to gaslighting, and (3) the influence of ecological factors on self-trust. This study represents a substantial advancement in the literature on gaslighting in IPV, demonstrating the validity of a new two-part model of gaslighting, describing survivors’ subjective experiences of self-doubt, and illuminating how gaslighting fits into broader patterns of power and control in IPV. It also provides the first account of what survivor resistance to gaslighting might look like, and how other factors in survivors’ lives may hinder or promote resistance. Implications for research and practice are discussed in the context of study limitations. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2023. / Submitted to: Boston College.
Domestic violence is a major issue for society and for the individual. The majority of those who are exposed are women, but it also affects men and children. The purpose of this study was to investigate ambulance nurses' experience of meeting patients who have been exposed to domestic violence. The study is a qualitative interview study with an inductive approach. Eight nurses working in the ambulance service in Gothenburg participated in the study. The analysed material resulted in three themes: Prerequisites for the encounter with the abused patient, Encounter the abused patient and Experiences that are difficult to let go. The results of the study show that nurses in the ambulance service experience anger, frustration, and powerlessness in the face of domestic violence. These feelings become especially strong when children are involved. To have good teamwork with your colleague and the feeling of a satisfactory work effort had a positive impact on informants. It also shows that the regulations are too vague, and it is sometimes difficult to get patients to the right care institution. Furthermore, the results showed that the informants experienced that there are no guidelines for domestic violence and to write a notification of concern when children are involved, is far too complicated to do. The informants feel the need for clearer guidelines and more education on domestic violence.

Det bortglömda våldet : En litteraturstudie om våld i nära relation bland äldre och demenssjuka / The forgotten violence : A literature study on violence in close relationships among the elderly andpeople with dementiaRobertsson, Rebecca, Al-Bayati, Amina January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this literature study is to examine intimate partner violence among olderindividuals, with a particular focus on how violence manifests when the older person issuffering from dementia. The study is based on a thematic content analysis of scholarlyarticles. A total of seventeen articles have been analyzed to address the research questions. The analysis of the findings is grounded in three theoretical starting points, namely ageism,Foucault's theory of power, and Simmel's theory of shame. The results highlight older adultsas a marginalized group in society, with violence being an issue that is not widely addressedor openly discussed. In this study, we explore how informal caregivers perceive their role in caring for a familymember with dementia. We describe different forms of violence and the underlying causesthat contribute to its occurrence. The study indicates that older adults with cognitiveimpairments are at a higher risk of experiencing violence and abuse of power. Informalcaregivers act as providers of care for older adults, and they often report a lack of knowledgeand inadequate support from local authorities. This power imbalance between caregivers andcare recipients can lead to caregiver strain, which may manifest in violent acts. Additionally, older adults may hesitate to report incidents of abuse due to feelings of shame. The findingsunderscore the importance of addressing the knowledge gaps and deficiencies in supportsystems. Measures need to be implemented to protect older adults, particularly those withdementia, who are subjected to mistreatment.

Maskulinitet och våld i nära relation : En kvalitativ textanalysstudie av hur mordet på Tintin representeras i svenska tidningsmedierHanson Sundkvist, Tilde, Notehag, Agnes January 2023 (has links)
In January of 2023, an eight-year-old boy named Tintin was found deceased in his father's residence. The family had been in a custody dispute for years and both Tintin and his mother were frightened of the father. Despite the mother´s plead against the son visiting the father, the district court had allowed unattended parenting time with father. In the trial, the father admitted to homicide and stated that the purpose was to save Tintin. Domestic violence is a common crime where in most cases men are the predators while women and children fall victim. The main purpose of this essay is to examine problem representations in articles published by Swedish newspaper media regarding the case of Tintin. A partial purpose is to study if masculinity and the power of men are problematized in the Swedish newspaper media. The method applied in this examination is a “What's the problem represented to be?”- analysis. The study is based on 43 articles regarding the case of Tintin published by the four largest national Newspapers in Sweden. The examination found that there were differentiated problem representations presented in the newspaper media. Most of the articles problematized the acting of governmental agencies, the legislation, and a few mentioned the father´s actions. The cause of the problem was explained to be the inadequate right access legislation, the acting of governmental agencies, the fathers acting, and a minority brought up masculinity. The articles stated that the potential solution to the problem consists of a change in law, improved knowledge of how to practice the existing right access law and penalties. Finally, the examination found that the Newspaper media didn´t problematize the father's actions and masculine violence to a great extent and focused more on the failure of society.

The Health Impacts of Domestic Violence on Women in Chibok Local Government Area in Borno State, NigeriaOluwapelumi, Ayotunde January 2021 (has links)
Domestic violence is defined as mishandling of power, from one person to another. Although the degree differs depending on the community and society, women have largely been on the receiving end in nearly 95 per cent of all known cases. Domestic violence is an international issue that has reached national boundaries as well as socio-economic, cultural, racial, and class distinctions. Violence against women constitutes an act of gender-based violence and women have been subjected to various types of violence ranging from battering, rape to trafficking, and murder. Nigerian women are often violated without apology. This issue is not only widely disseminated nationally but its occurrence is also widespread, making it a typical and acknowledged behaviour. The violence is deeply ingrained and has serious consequences on women’s health and their well-being, which is likely to result in psychological, mental, and physical harm to women. Efforts made by the world body organizations such as the United Nations, Universal Declaration of HumanRights, the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights, and Nigeria’s constitutions to eradicate violence and discrimination against women, and to promote the idea of equality, freedom, and justice. This paper attempts to recognize and examine the consequences of domestic violence against women’s health in Chibok Local Government, Nigeria.
