A comparative study of the provision of Mandarin as foreign language in higher education in China and South AfricaWang, Yuhua (Educator) 11 1900 (has links)
The importance of China as world power has led to a growing interest in and demand for learning Mandarin as a Foreign Language (MFL) worldwide. This study focuses on a comparative study of the provision of MFL in higher education in China and in South Africa. A conceptual framework was provided by examining theories of language policy planning and second language or foreign language acquisition as well as an overview of MFL provision in Chinese and South African higher education. MFL policy in China is characterised as a diffusion policy driven by economic globalisation, „soft power‟ and culture, and supported by legislation, funding and implementation. In South Africa, no specific policy underlies MFL, although motivation for MFL provision is given through strategic economic relations between South Africa and China. Against this background, a mixed-method inquiry conducted in two phases examined MFL at three purposefully selected universities in China and at the four university providers in South Africa. Phase One investigated lecturer perceptions of MFL tuition using a researcher-designed questionnaire; Phase Two explored student experiences of MFL using semi-structured interviews with purposefully selected MFL students in both countries. Findings indicated similarities in lecturer profile and differences in lecturers' perceptions regarding institutional support for MFL, particularly in institutions offering degrees in MFL, the MFL classroom environment and the curriculum. Student participants identified differences in studying MFL abroad in China and at home in South Africa in terms of class scheduling, peer and tutor support, student enrolments and design of educational programmes. All language skills were acquired more rapidly in the immersion learning context in China than in the first language dominant South African context, especially communication skills. Similarities were demonstrated in the emotional dimension of learning a new language, the main needs of MFL students, the opportunity to use or speak Mandarin, motivation to study Mandarin, and the challenges characteristic of Mandarin as a language. Recommendations for improvement of practice were given in terms of immersion context creation, opportunity to learn support, Confucius Institute facilities and exchange programmes for study abroad, lecturer and tutor improvement, and the establishment of an incentive to learn mechanism in South Africa. / Educational Studies / D. N-acetilcisteína melhora os fenótipos renal e cardíaco e reduz o peso corpóreo em camundongos císticos deficientes em Pkd1 / N-acetylcysteine improves renal and cardiac phenotypes and reduces body weight in Pkd1-deficient cystic miceMoyses, Zenaide Providello 13 December 2013 (has links)
Nossos dados abrem uma linha de pesquisa significativa e provavelmente robusta para se intervir nos fenótipos renal, cardíaco e sistêmico da DRPAD / Oxidative stress has been postulated to participate in the progression of renal disease in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). The antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC), in turn, has been shown to determined beneficial effects on several animal models of renal injury. In the current study, a cystic mouse generated by breeding a Pkd1 floxed allele with a nestin Cre expressing line was used to evaluate the potential therapeutic effects of NAC on a model orthologous to human ADPKD. Long-term NAC treatment was initiated at conception, birth, weaning or 8 weeks of life, to allow the evaluation of its effects on different phases of life. Our analyses revealed that NAC decreased thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and increased glutathione levels in the kidneys of mice treated with NAC since conception (CY-NAC-Con) compared with non-treated cystic animals (CY-Ctl). Nitric oxide urinary excretion was also higher in NAC-treated cystic mice. These animals showed lower serum urea nitrogen (SUN), number of renal cysts, cystic index and renal interstitial fibrosis than CY-Ctl mice. CY-NAC-Con animals displayed, in addition, higher left ventricle ejection fraction and fractional shortening compared with CY-Ctl mice, as well as decreased cardiac fibrosis. NAC treatment started at conception increased the survival of cystic mice, demonstrating beneficial systemic effects. Interestingly, body weight was significantly lower in CY-NAC-Con than CY-Ctl mice at all evaluated times, a difference not observed between non-cystic animals treated and not treated with NAC Whether all observed NAC actions are caused by its antioxidant properties is yet not clear. These results support beneficial effects of early treatment with NAC on Pkd1-deficient cystic mice, by determining improvement in their renal, heart and systemic phenotypes. Our findings also reveal a non-deleterious reduction in body growth induced by long-term NAC administration in the evaluated Pkd1-deficient background. Our data open a likely significant and robust research track to intervene in renal, extra-renal and systemic ADPKD phenotypes

Castaways and colonists from Crusoe to Coetzee / Susanna Johanna Smit-MaraisSmit-Marais, Susanna Johanna January 2012 (has links)
Generic transformation of the castaway novel is made evident by the various ways in
which the narrative boundaries that separate fiction from reality and history, the past
from the present, and the rational from the irrational, are reconfigured in Umberto
Eco’s The Island of the Day Before (1994), J.M. Coetzee’s Foe (1986) and Yann
Martel’s Life of Pi (2002). The dissolution of boundaries reflects the dominant shift
that has occurred in the castaway novel from the 18th century literary context to the
present postmodern, postcolonial context. In this regard, the narrative utilizes various
narratological strategies, the most significant being intertextuality, metafiction,
historiographical metafiction, allegory, irony, and the carnivalesque. These
narratological strategies rewrite, revise, and recontextualize those generic conventions
that perpetuated the culture of masculinity and conquest that defines colonialism and
the traditional castaway novel epitomized by Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe (1719).
From a postcolonial perspective, the castaway’s state of being reflects on the
condition of the colonized as well as the colonizer: his/her experience of displacement
is similar to colonized peoples’ separation from their cultural, spiritual and personal
identities; simultaneously, processes of appropriation, adaptation and control of space
resemble colonization, thereby revealing the constructed nature of colonial space. As
such, space is fundamental to individual orientation and social adaptation and
consequently, metaphorically and metonymically linked to identity.
In the selected postmodernist and postcolonial texts, the movement from the position
of castaway to colonist as originally manifested in Robinson Crusoe is therefore
reinterpreted and recontextualized. The postmodernist and postcolonial contexts
resist fixed and one-dimensional representations of identity, as well as the
appropriation and domination of space, that characterize shipwreck literature from
pre-colonial and colonial periods. Rationalist notions of history, reality and truth as
empirically definable concepts are also contested. The castaway identity is often
characterized by feelings of physical and spiritual displacement and estrangement that
can be paralleled to postmodernist themes of existential confusion and anxiety. / Thesis (PhD (English))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013

Des lapins watanabe au syndrome hyper IgE humain : caractérisation précoce de l'athérosclérose utilisant une probe optique ciblant l'integrin aVb3 / From Watanabe Rabbits to Human Hyper IgE Syndrome : Characterization of Early Atherosclerosis Using a High Affinity αvβ3 Integrin Targeted Optical ProbeHéroux, Julie 20 December 2012 (has links)
Purpose The detection of early atherosclerosis, before the development of its later sequelae of myocardial infarction, angina or stroke, constitutes an important challenge in current diagnostic medicine. Despite all the recent technological advances, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the Western World and needs to be detected at an earlier stage to allow for more timely therapeutic intervention. This study is focusing on the detection of atherosclerosis or more specifically plaque vulnerability with the help of molecular imaging and pathological observation. Effectively, to predict plaque rupture, molecular imaging has emerged as a powerful diagnostic tool, consequent to the development of a growing number of new probes with affinity for key molecular targets. As a result, such selective molecule with high affinity for overexpressed target in plaque formation, as αvβ3 integrin, should have promise as a probe for imaging atherosclerosis. With the help of molecular imaging combined with pathological observations, we can better comprehend, predict, and detect plaque vulnerability and rupture. Objectives The overall objective of this study is to evaluate different molecular tools to predict the vulnerability of the atheromatous plaque. The major objective of the research was to investigate the possibility of detecting atherosclerotic plaque by using a newly developed synthetic αvβ3 integrin targeted optical probe (ITOP) showing particularly high affinity and specificity for the αvβ3 receptor. We also investigate the relation between this probe and pathological observation of atherosclerotic plaques from WHHL animal model and different human samples. Procedures and Results For this study, experiments were performed on 12 Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic (WHHL) rabbits and 1 New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits for control. First, our ITOP labeled with fluorescein isothiocyanate was used for detecting the presence of αvβ3 receptors in vitro and ex vivo on a Watanabe rabbit model. Fluorescence microscopy demonstrated a strong labeling of atherosclerotic plaques, which was absent in tissue from normal NZW rabbits. Segments of plaque accumulation from two distinct regions of ascending and descending aortas were labeled in each rabbit. The signal was found principally in the adventitia and proximal intima of the aortic vessel, corresponding directly to the expression of integrin αvβ3 as determined by antibody assay. Moreover, there was a close association between the level of labeling with the αvβ3 targeted probe and the thickness of the adventitia. Secondly, the ITOP was evaluated on human atherosclerotic samples, and was found to efficiently labeled atherosclerotic plaques. Moreover, we observed the same tendency as in the Watanabe rabbit: the ITOP intensity correlated with the degree of adventitial thickening. Finally, we tested the ITOP on Job's Syndrome coronary arteries, and have been able to detect a plaque corresponding to the first type of advanced atherosclerosis (type IV). We also found a relationship between plaque morphology and predisposition to aneurysms in Job's syndrome. Conclusions αvβ3 expression is related to inflammatory and stenotic processes. Our ITOP can efficiently label in vitro the first type of advanced atherosclerotic plaque. In combination with noninvasive imaging techniques that evaluate stenosis, it has great potential for the detection of vulnerable plaque.

Physical or Digital Payments : Towards a Dominant Design? / Fysiska eller digitala betalningar : Mot en dominant design?ANDERSSON, ALEXANDER, ESSUNGER, KARL January 2018 (has links)
Rapid digitalisation development has been stampeding widely across today’s societies, and not least in the payment industry. Though, the digitalisation in the payment industry has been very deviating, even between similar well-developed countries, and while there are positive and negative effects with both digital- and physical payment means, there is little knowledge that highlights the influencing factors and accompanied problems. This study therefore explore swhich, and how, different factors influence a country’s degree of digital payments, and creates further understanding of where the payment markets are heading in the future. It is done through a case study of four different industrialised countries, Sweden, Italy, Canada, and Switzerland which involves mapping the countries’ payment markets, as well as potential factors influencing a population’s payment habits, through a perspective of innovation theory in terms of dominant designs and technological discontinuities. Theory of network externalities and two-sided platforms are further used to explain and discuss how a two-sided market, likethe payment market, is affected by changes and other circumstances in different ways. Conclusions are then drawn from the used theories together with a comparison of the findings, and identifies certain influencers to a country’s distribution of payments, as well as provides indications of where the different payments markets are heading in the future. Data is mainly gathered through written material and credible databases, but also from semi-structured interviews.

Psychotherapeutic effectiveness and social discourse : an ecosystemic explorationCarruthers, Angeline 30 November 2007 (has links)
Extensive questions have been asked regarding the factors that influence psychotherapeutic effectiveness. Past research has addressed the methods, techniques, as well as the client and therapist variables which potentially influence psychotherapeutic effectiveness. The majority of the research indicates that the therapeutic relationship and other contextual variables exert the greatest influence on psychotherapy successes. This implicates the broader social context in psychotherapy processes. Language appears to be one of the primary contextual factors influencing psychotherapeutic processes and is also embedded in social discourse. Society dominant discourses appear to be based on deficit beliefs toward psychotherapy and emotional functioning. The more relevant issue concerning psychotherapeutic effectiveness therefore appears to be society's dominant discourses affecting the profession. Collaborative social discourses embracing psychology are seldom integrated into mainstream public discourse. A post-modern, ecosystemic perspective is applied to these concerns, proposing a collaborative approach to social discourse, psychotherapy and research. This utilizes reflective, multi-dimensional, respectful and nonjudgmental values, reflecting the shift in social paradigms from the Industrial Age to the Knowledge Age. This shift recognizes that cultural, social and language variables appear to have a greater impact on psychotherapeutic effectiveness than most therapeutic techniques or interventions. These discourses are explored and recommendations are made in an attempt to align psychotherapy with a shifting social paradigm. This alignment could enhance psychotherapeutic effectiveness and the general understanding of psychotherapy. / Psychology / D.Litt. et Phil. (Psychology)

A social contract with business as the basis for a postmodern MBA in a world order of inclusive globalisation : a critical metasynthesisCoetzee, Josef Jooste 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis addresses the paradigm shift required for an MBA qualification in a world order of inclusive globalisation (WOIG) – where humankind‟s security is assured, and where global poverty has been eradicated.
A new research methodology, termed critical metasynthesis, which is the enrichment of critical management research with metasynthesis and Socrates‟ dialectic method of systematic inquiry has been used. The critical metasynthesis derives its outcome from the insights of global leaders from the developed and developing world, refuted by Nobel Laureates from the past decade.
From the Socratic dialogue an end-purpose Statement of Visions for a new world order, society, business, business leadership, and the postmodern MBA emerged, namely: to deliver a WOIG; requiring a society that finds its greatness in protecting both its humanity and its economy as a whole; requiring world-class businesses – financially robust across business cycles, with global stewardship as the dominant business logic; requiring global business leaders with an ability to envision the WOIG, and then to lead thereto in an entrepreneurial and path-breaking manner exerting leadership qualities associated with the golden Rule of Humanity; requiring an MBA that educates and inspires the business leader to lead (and, to co-lead with societal and political leaders) the planetary turn-around to a WOIG.
For this, a fundamental change of paradigm for the MBA emerged as a prerequisite.
The first prerequisite is a Social Contract with Business as a trichotomy of global business responsibility towards society, politics and the Earth. This, becomes the raison d‟être of the postmodern MBA.
The second prerequisite is an educational context aligned with the values and aspirations of a WOIG society. The outcome of the postmodern MBA is a fundamental personal re-orientation as thé kairos moment - through holistic critical reasoning excellence and achieving a WOIG mindset. Flowing from this to craft, build and to manage enterprises for the turn-around from today‟s world order of destructive globalisation to a WOIG.
The thesis contributes a new educational context, vocabulary, and guidelines for a new canon of MBA knowledge.
The thesis concludes by describing new vistas of follow-up research in four interlocking priorities for the professoriate, namely: discovering, integrating, applying and teaching a postmodern MBA in a WOIG – to deliver MBA graduates who can lead any business in any industry sector in any country towards positive sustained results for all stakeholders. / Business Leadership / D.B.L.
