Tensions in the Dominant Domestic Violence Discourse and the High Risk Case Coordination ProtocolSinger, Verona E. 18 December 2012 (has links)
The feminist qualitative research undergirding this thesis focuses on the Nova Scotia high risk case coordination program, a protocol used to flag and coordinate woman abuse cases where there is a risk of serious injury or lethality. The research involved interviews with twenty-nine abused women in the high risk protocol, as well as focus groups with service providers implementing the protocol, including police, victim services, transition houses, men’s intervention programs, corrections and child welfare.The data collected through this research illuminated three broad themes regarding societal responses to woman abuse: the need to rethink the approach to the abuser, the need to rethink the approach to the victim, and the need to avoid one-size-fits-all solutions.The research also highlighted tensions and contradictions within the dominant domestic violence discourse. This thesis attempts to move beyond the dichotomous “either/or” thinking reflected in many of the current policies and programs relating to woman abuse.

Abuse in the church : an appeal and challenge to pastoral ministryVisser, Rosemare Ann 09 April 2013 (has links)
This multidisciplinary study, which includes Practical Theology and also insights from Psychology and Sociology, investigates experiences of abuse in social structures such as the church. My epistemological approach is social constructionist. Psychological theories employed are the social constructivist personal construct theory of George Kelly and Gergen's social constructionist theorization. Kelly's theory posits that people construct their own realities in social settings, such as family, culture and everyday social structures. This takes place on a cognitive level through the nervous system. By means of Gergen’s social constructionist theorization the role that social constructions (beliefs and practices) play in (often unintentional) abusive practices in social structures as well as the experiences of victims, is explained. Sociological theories included are Berger and Luckmann’s theory of the social construction of reality as well as Anthony Giddens’ structuration theory, which emphasizes agency (human action) and structure tensions in social structures. I argue that processes such as typification, reification and structuration, as explained by these theorists can result in abusive actions and behaviours (often unintentional) and experiences of abuse by people in groups. In addition, the lives and teachings of Jesus and Paul are examined from a social constructionist perspective. A qualitative investigation was conducted with participants who claim to have experienced abuse in groups. Their stories are used as case studies. A narrative thematic analysis reveals that dominant discourses, for example patriarchal worldviews and belief systems which go unexamined, are often imposed on others which results in experiences of abuse. The study is therefore embedded in a postmodern, social constructionist narrative framework constructed from all three disciplines. Traditions, belief systems and practices should be reflected upon, carefully examined and revisited, and not simply accepted as "reality". Reality is constructed in social interaction and relationship and should be open to review and change should the need arise, prompted by, for example, unacceptable phenomena, such as experiences of abuse in the church. The findings of this study are that the church and pastoral care ministry are often experienced as uncaring and abusive. Underlying dominant discourses should be exposed, since they contribute to practices that cause psychological, social and physical traumatisation and consequences for people. Pastoral care is often neglected because these actions and behaviours are regarded as "normal" and even "biblical". People are labelled and blamed. Male domination, objectification, humiliation, abuse of power and control, misuse of knowledge and truth claims are the consequence. The study revealed a strong correlation between participants’ experiences of abuse and the social constructionist constructs. Este texto estuda as narrativas breves El celoso extremeño e Las dos doncellas, integrantes do conjunto intitulado Novelas Ejemplares, publicadas por Miguel de Cervantes, em 1613. Tendo em vista que os textos nos permitem experimentar distintas dimensões de leitura, temos, no plano explícito, a expressão desse autor conformista e ortodoxo, nas palavras de Williamson (1990) e, no plano sugestivo, um olhar irônico e crítico, sobretudo da condição e do papel da mulher, nas relações de gênero e ainda na vida em sociedade. Em outras palavras, os dois níveis sobre os quais traçamos os nossos estudos podem ser vistos, simultaneamente, isto é, no discurso explícito, estão revelados fragmentos da realidade a partir de um discurso conservador das regras prescritas, mas, por outro lado, no plano implícito, está o caráter reflexivo, crítico, às vezes, até transgressor dos costumes predominantes. Nessas narrativas estudadas, se por um lado as mulheres atuam como perfectas corderas, cumprindo as regras para uma nobre donzela ou para uma mulher casada, por outro lado, essas mesmas mulheres vencem as suas fragilidades e inseguranças no ato de tomar decisões, demonstrando certa autoridade ou deixando ver poderes ocultos femininos. Em vista do comportamento masculino, nos deparamos com homens que, por trás de toda a superioridade e privilégio ditado pela cultura vigente, revelam-se sujeitos aos desejos e domínios femininos, o que nos faz entender todo aquele controle outrora evidenciado como uma forma simbólica de poder. Tendo em conta a sutileza com que o autor trabalha artisticamente a questão, essas dimensões de leitura só são perceptíveis pela interpretação do leitor cuidadoso, tomando de empréstimo o termo cervantino, em que é capaz de identificar a dupla face de um escritor escurridizo e irónico ao invés de solemne y ejemplar. Enfim, essas controvérsias de leitura nos fazem concluir que o autor exibe, pelas páginas da ficção, uma representação da dinâmica da vida em sociedade, na qual a formação de novas personagens demonstra que a força e a vontade do ser humano predominam sobre as regras e as convenções sociais. Sendo assim, a proposta é analisar como, ao deixar entrevisto um discurso crítico e irônico, novas representações de personagens masculinas e femininas flexibilizam os mecanismos culturais que sustentam a suposta hierarquia entre os gêneros. In other words, these two levels studied can be viewed simultaneously, that is, on the explicit discourse, \'fragments of reality\' are disclosed from a conservative discourse of the prescribed rules, but on the other hand, in the implicit plan there is the reflexive, critical character which sometimes can even transgress the prevalent customs. In these studied narratives, on the one hand, women act as \'perfectas corderas\', fulfilling the rules for a noble maiden or a married woman. On the other hand, these women overcome their weaknesses and insecurities in the act of making decisions, showing certain authority or revealing female \'occult powers\'. In view of male behavior, we find men who behind the superiority and privilege dictated by the prevailing culture, reveal themselves subject to female wishes and domains making us understand all that formerly evidenced control as a \'symbolic \'form of power. Given the subtlety the author works the question with art, these reading dimensions are only perceived by the interpretation of the \'careful\' reader, borrowing the term Cervantine which is able to identify the two faces of a \'escurridizo and ironic writer instead of\' solemne y ejemplar. Anyway, these reading controversies make us conclude that the author displays a representation of the social life dynamics through the fiction pages in which the formation of new characters demonstrates that the strength and will of the human being predominate over the rules and social conventions. Therefore, the proposal is to analyze through a critical and ironic discourse how new representations of male and female characters make flexible cultural mechanisms that underpin the supposed hierarchy between genders. In this perspective, we understand that this reading can reveal some of the \'hidden mysteries\' such as disruptions, subversions and transgressions to conventions revealing a \'secret\' society in which women exhibit some authority in the context of order still predominantly male.

Resisting division along ethnic lines: a case study of two communities who challenged discourses of war during the Yugoslav conflict 1991-1995Otmacic, Valentina January 2017 (has links)
There is a generalized perception on the 1991-1995 war in the former Yugoslavia as an ethnic conflict caused by longstanding antagonisms among homogenous ethnic groups inhabiting its territory. In such a worldview, which became part of the dominant discourse, inter-ethnic violence in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina was inevitable and the division of the population along ethnic lines was needed to stop the violence.
In this thesis I problematize the dominant discourse on the ethnic nature and inevitability of violence, as well as on the ethnic fracturing as a solution, by exposing the experiences of two largest communities that remained ethnically mixed and preserved communal peace throughout wartime – the community of the region of Gorski kotar in Croatia and the community of the city of Tuzla in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
By documenting and analysing their discourses and practices, and by contrasting them with the dominant discourses of war in these two countries, I provide evidence that these two communities were oases of peace which developed a counter-discourse and resisted violence by preserving their multi-ethnic character, promoting multiple identities, cherishing inter-ethnic cooperation and ensuring equality and good governance for all their citizens. Their narratives challenge the well-established «truths» about the war in the former Yugoslavia and add to the complexity of collective memories of its peoples.

The Theme of this research is The constitution of the feminine ethos in The Yellow Bag ,
Lygia Bojunga and born of the initial belief linked to the construction of social discourses. In
this paper we analyse a literary work here considered as a representation of the world through
words. In the discursive level, it is the female speech introjection that rhetorical tricks, as they
reflect the being in existence, leverage the instituting discourse and sediment, by moving the
passions, new ways of saying and understand the world. The Yellow Bag, published in 1976,
still reverberates powerfully valid one speech to think the status of women today in presenting
indisputable rhetorical force in the development of the main character s arguments, Rachel
girl. Thus, the analysis undertaken in this study adopts a perspective centered in the speech of
female character-child, by checking a rhetorical process of constituting an ethos created
fictitiously by an adult, the writer Lygia Bojunga. As we observed, handling the language the
author demonstrates enough discursive ability to move within the limits of a literary text, the
dominant discourse and create instituting apeeches that highlight the condition of being a
woman in today s world. Raquel, through the rant, makes its effective argument, causes the
pathos (passion) and the auditorium, by setting out a line originated from the interior of a
child, it becomes benevolent with the narrated facts. For present itself in the robes of a literary
text, passion compels the audience to accept one or more conclusions about a woman
nowadays. This attitude of acceptance presupposes driving through reasoning, albeit sharp
appeal to the listener s emotions. The analysis addresses, then two facets: the recreation of
speech in child communicative interaction situation and fictional view of how a child is
imposed discursively to constitute its ethos in the narrative. Constituted as an analytical base
studies of Aristotles (2000), Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca (2005), that guide research
Reboul (2004), Meyer (2007) and Ferreira (2010). To create the historical context, draws up
an overview of women, children and the family, through Bassanezi studies (1986), Aries
(2012) and Santarcangelo (1980). For proof of persuasive means, analyses through features
allowed by the rhetoric analisys, the efficacy of the speech by the girl-woman speaker called
Raquel. At the end of the investigation it was concluded that, in the Yellow Bag, as imagined
in the case of this study, the condition of women, historically marked by devaluation,
submission and subservience, is partially abandoned to make way for discursive construction
of a scenario that portends changes social and significant contemporany female professionals
in the act. It appears, too, that the character Rachel is constructed rhetorically to highlight an
ethos that seduces (movere) the auditorium to present as girl-child (delectare) and proposes

Católica de São Paulo. O tema desta pesquisa é A constituição do ethos feminino no livro A
Bolsa Amarela , de Lygia Bojunga, surgida de uma crença inicial ligada à construção dos
discursos sociais. Neste trabalho, analisamos uma obra literária aqui considerada como
representação do mundo por meio da palavra. No plano discursivo, é pela introjeção do
discurso feminino que as artimanhas retóricas, enquanto refletem o estar na existência,
potencializam o discurso instituinte e sedimentam, pelo movimentar das paixões, novas
formas de dizer e compreender o mundo. O livro A Bolsa Amarela, publicado em 1976, ainda
reverbera um discurso potentemente válido para pensar a condição da mulher em nossos dias,
ao apresentar indiscutível força retórica na elaboração dos argumentos da personagem
principal, a menina Raquel. Assim, a análise empreendida neste trabalho adota uma
perspectiva centrada na fala de uma personagem-criança do sexo feminino, por meio da
verificação de um processo retórico de constituição de um ethos criado ficticiamente por um
adulto, a escritora Lygia Bojunga. Como foi possível verificar, o manuseio da língua pela
autora demonstra habilidade discursiva suficiente para movimentar, nos limites de um texto
literário, o discurso dominante e criar discursos instituintes que ressaltam na condição de ser
mulher no mundo atual. Raquel, por meio do discurso retórico, torna sua argumentação eficaz,
provoca o pathos (paixões) e o auditório, por enunciar uma fala originada do interior de uma
criança, torna-se benevolente com os fatos narrados. Por se apresentar sob as vestes de um
texto literário, a paixão compele o auditório a aceitar uma ou mais conclusões sobre o ser
mulher na contemporaneidade. Essa atitude de aceitação pressupõe a condução por meio de
raciocínios, ainda que de nítido apelo à emoção do ouvinte. A análise aborda, então, duas
facetas: a recriação da fala infantil em situação de interação comunicativa e uma visão
ficcional da forma como uma criança se impõe discursivamente para constituir seu ethos na
narrativa. Constituíram como base analítica os estudos de Aristóteles (2000), Perelman e
Olbrechts-Tyteca (2005), que orientam as pesquisas de Reboul (2004), Meyer (2007) e
Ferreira (2010). À criação do contexto histórico, traça-se um panorama geral da mulher, da
criança e da família, por meio dos estudos de Bassanezi (1986), Ariès (2012) e Santarcangelo
(1980). À comprovação dos meios persuasivos, analisa-se, por meio de recursos permitidos
pela análise retórica, a eficácia do discurso proferido pela oradora menina-mulher chamada
Raquel. Ao término da investigação conclui-se que, em A Bolsa Amarela, como se imaginava
na hipótese deste trabalho, a condição feminina, historicamente marcada pela desvalorização,
submissão e subserviência, é parcialmente abandonada para dar lugar à edificação discursiva
de um cenário que prenuncia mudanças sociais e profissionais significativas no agir feminino
contemporâneo. Constata-se, também, que a personagem Raquel é construída retoricamente
para ressaltar um ethos que seduz (movere) o auditório ao se apresentar como menina-criança

The United Nations General Assembly recognized the years from 2005 to 2014 as the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD). Students perspectives on education for sustainable development and student perceptions on action projects for sustainable development are almost absent from the literature. This thesis presents an analysis of students voices and experiences as a result of Youth Forum 2008 (a forum proposed to support high school students as action leaders in sustainability projects) in three different case locations. The study attempts to understand students challenges with their action projects, examining them in the context of dominant discourses and explores supports that can be put into place to facilitate students navigation toward their goals of completing successful action projects for sustainable development.<p>
This qualitative study was composed of a series of focus group recorded conversations with ten high school student participants involved in three different school sites who all attempted to complete action projects for sustainable development. Many themes were identified: time, whether projects were extracurricular or curricular, school community, teacher, teacher education, marks/evaluation, community engagement, youth forum and technology. In the examination and interpretation many attractions and distractions for the student participants were identified. By interpreting the students experiences through the language of the students, a deeper understanding of the dominant discourses of schools and society and how they might limit the students highlights broader ideas about students struggles and triumphs in education and with teaching. In the conclusion, I suggest recommendations and I also suggest further avenues for research.
