High Frequency GaN Characterization and Design Considerations

The future power conversion system not only must meet the characteristics demanded by the load, but also have to achieve high power density with high efficiency, high ambient temperature, and high reliability. Density and efficiency are two key drivers and metrics for the advancement of power conversion technologies. Generally speaking, a high performance active device is the first force to push power density to meet the requirement of modern systems. Silicon has been a dominant material in power management since the late 1950s. However, due to continuous device optimizations and improvements in the production process, the material properties of silicon have increasingly become the limiting factor. Workarounds like the super junction stretch the limits but usually at substantial cost. The use of gallium nitride devices is gathering momentum, with a number of recent market introductions for a wide range of applications such as point-of-load (POL) converters, off-line switching power supplies, battery chargers and motor drives. GaN devices have a much lower gate charge and lower output capacitance than silicon MOSFETs and, therefore, are capable of operating at a switching frequency 10 times greater. This can significantly impact the power density of power converters, their form factor, and even current design and manufacturing practices. To realize the benefits of GaN devices resulting from significantly higher operating frequencies, a number of issues have to be addressed, such as converter topology, soft-switching technique, high frequency gate driver, high frequency magnetics, packaging, control, and thermal management. This work studies the insight switching characteristics of high-voltage GaN devices including some specific issues related to the cascode GaN. The package impact on the switching performance and device reliability will be illustrated in details. A stack-die package is proposed for cascode GaN devices to minimize the impact of package parasitic inductance on switching transition. Comparison of hard-switching and soft-switching operation is carried based on device model and experiments, which shows the necessity of soft-switching for GaN devices at high frequency. This work also addresses high dv/dt and di/dt related gate drive issues associated with the higher switching speed of GaN devices. Particularly, the conventional driving solution could fail on the high side switch in a half-bridge configuration due to relative large common-mode noise current. Two simple and effective driving methods are proposed to improve noise immunity and maintain high driving speed. Finally, this work illustrates the utilization of GaN in an emerging application, high density AC-DC adapter. Many design considerations are presented in detail. The GaN-based adapter is capable of operating at 1-2 MHz frequency with an improved efficiency up to 94%. Several design examples at different power levels, with a power density in the range of 20~35W/in3, which is a three-fold improvement over the state-of-the-art product, are successfully demonstrated. In conclusion, this work is focus on the characterization, and evaluation of GaN devices. Packaging, high frequency driving and soft-switching technique are addressed to fully explore the potential of GaN devices. High density adapters are demonstrated to show the advance of GaN device and its impact on system design. / Ph. D. / This work is focus on the characterization, evaluation and application of new wideband-gap semiconductor devices – GaN devices. Due to superior physics property compared to existing semiconductor material, GaN device is able to switch at much higher frequency and this brings significant impact on the field of power electronics. The potential impact of GaN goes beyond the simple measures of efficiency and power density. It is feasible to design a system with a more integrated approach at higher frequency, and therefore, it is easier for automated manufacturing. This will bring significant cost reductions in power electronics equipment and unearth numerous new applications which have been previously precluded due to high cost. To realize the benefits of GaN devices resulting from significantly higher operating frequencies, a number of issues have to be addressed, such as device packaging, power converter topology, thermal management, high frequency magnetics and system control. This dissertation discusses the most critical issues related to GaN devices with proper solutions. A practical design example of AC-DC adapter is demonstrated with much improved efficiency, density and manufacturability.

Big Data Analytics-enabled Sensing Capability and Organizational Outcomes: Assessing the Mediating Effects of Business Analytics Culture

Yes / With the emergence of information and communication technologies, organizations worldwide have been putting in meaningful efforts towards developing and gaining business insights by combining technology capability, management capability and personnel capability to explore data potential, which is known as big data analytics (BDA) capability. In this context, variables such as sensing capability—which is related to the organization’s ability to explore the market and develop opportunities—and analytics culture—which refers to the organization’s practices and behavior patterns of its analytical principles—play a fundamental role in BDA initiatives. However, there is a considerable literature gap concerning the effects of BDA-enabled sensing capability and analytics culture on organizational outcomes (i.e., customer linking capability, financial performance, market performance, and strategic business value) and on how important the organization’s analytics culture is as a mediator in the relationship between BDA-enabled sensing capability and organizational outcomes. Therefore, this study aims to investigate these relationships. And to attain this goal, we developed a conceptual model supported by dynamics capabilities, BDA, and analytics culture. We then validated our model by applying partial least squares structural equation modeling. The findings showed not only the positive effect of the BDA-enabled sensing capability and analytics culture on organizational outcomes but also the mediation effect of the analytics culture. Such results bring valuable theoretical implications and contributions to managers and practitioners.

Modeling and Implementation of Controller for Switched Reluctance Motor With Ac Small Signal Model

As traditional control schemes, open-loop Hysteresis and closed-loop pulse-width-modulation (PWM) have been used for the switched reluctance motor (SRM) current controller. The Hysteresis controller induces large unpleasant audible noises because it needs to vary the switching frequency to maintain constant Hysteresis current band. In contract, the PWM controller is very quiet but difficult to design proper gains and control bandwidth due to the nonlinear nature of the SRM. In this thesis, the ac small signal modeling technique is proposed for linearization of the SRM model such that a conventional PI controller can be designed accordingly for the PWM current controller. With the linearized SRM model, the duty-cycle to output transfer function can be derived, and the controller can be designed with sufficient stability margins. The proposed PWM controller has been simulated to compare the performance against the conventional Hysteresis controller based system. It was found that through the frequency spectrum analysis, the noise spectra in audible range disappeared with the fixed switching frequency PWM controller, but was pronounced with the conventional Hysteresis controller. A hardware prototype is then implemented with digital signal processor to verify the quiet nature of the PWM controller when running at 20 kHz switching frequency. The experimental results also indicate a stable current loop operation. / Master of Science

Šiame baigiamajame darbe tiriamas elektriškai ir magnetiškai dvipusio tiesiaeigio asinchroninio variklio (TAV) valdymo būdas, keičiant vieno iš induktorių maitinimo įtampos fazę kito induktoriaus maitinimo įtampos fazės atžvilgiu. Įvade suformuluotas darbo tikslas ir paminėtos TAV taikymo galimybės. Atlikta literatūros šaltinių analizė ir apžvelgti tiesiaeigiai asinchroniniai varikliai bei jų konstrukcijos. Pateikti šių variklių privalumai, trūkumai ir panaudojimo sritys. Teorinėje dalyje išanalizuotos tiesiaeigės stūmiklių pavaros ir apžvelgti specialūs tiesiaeigių variklių valdymo būdai. Išanalizuotos statinės charakteristikos ir sudaryta skaičiavimo metodika. Tiriamojoje dalyje sudarytas TAV modelis ir imituotos dinaminės charakteristikos. Pagamintas ir išbandytas TAV bandymų stendas, pateiktos išvados. Pasiūlyta tiesiaeigės stūmiklio pavaros funkcinė ir elektrinė principinė schemos. Darbą sudaro 7 dalys: įvadas, literatūros analizė, tyrimo tikslas ir uždaviniai, tiriamoji dalis eksperimentinė dalis, tyrimo rezultatų apibendrinimas, literatūra ir kt. šaltiniai. Darbo apimtis – 70 p. teksto be priedų, 49 iliustr., 3 lent., 24 bibliografiniai šaltiniai. / Electrically and magnetically control mode of two-sided linear induction motor (LIM) is analysed in this thesis. It is done by changing one of the voltage power supply inductor phase regard to next phase inductor. The main goal of thesis and LIM application possibilities are formulated in introduction. Literature review and analysis of linear induction motors and their construction was accomplished. The use of energy, main advantages and disadvantages of these motors were represented. Special control techniques, analysis of linear pushing drives and linear motors were analysed in theoretical section. LIM static characteristics and calculation methodology is provided in this section either. In the research section consist of LIM mathematical model, where dynamic characteristics are simulated. The actual LIM model was made and tested, experiment conclusions were written. The linear spindle drive functional and electrical diagrams were proposed. The work consists of seven sections: introduction, literature review, the study of aims and objectives, experimental section, investigating LIM and providing results, literature and others sources. Work size - 70 p. text without appendixes, 49 pictures., 3 tables., 24 bibliographic sources.

Morgondagens försvar ska vara baserat på kvalité istället för kvantitet. Från att ha haft ett försvar som omfattat omkring 800 000 personer under vapen i händelse av ofred ska det nya försvaret skäras ned till att omfatta omkring 200 000 personer. En mängd materiel, allt från stridsvagnar och underkläder, blir således överflödig. Försvarsmakten skall fram till utgången av 2004 ha genomfört omorganisationen. Tillvägagångssättet att avveckla överskottet varierar, destruktion, försäljning och som bistånd är exempel på avvecklingsalternativ. De olika tillvägagångssätten har fått kritik från olika aktörer som deltagit i debatten. Growing memory capacities and the increasing number of cores on modern hardware enforces the design of new in-memory indexing structures that reduce the number of memory transfers and minimizes the need for locking to allow massive parallel access. However, most applications depend on hard durability constraints requiring a persistent medium like SSDs, which shorten the latency and throughput gap between main memory and hard disks. In this paper, we present our winning solution of the SIGMOD Programming Contest 2011. It consists of an in-memory indexing structure that provides a balanced read/write performance as well as non-blocking reads and single-lock writes. Complementary to this index, we describe an SSD-optimized logging approach to fit hard durability requirements at a high throughput rate.

Dans la continuité des travaux de recherches sur les systèmes de transmission mécanique embarqués, l’objectif de cette thèse est double : approfondir les modèles d’estimations des pièces d’un Actionneur Electromécanique (EMA) et étendre la vision transversale de la conception préliminaire aux aspects dynamiques. En effet, cette recherche permet, lors de la conception préliminaire basée sur les modèles, d’adapter les choix d’architectures et de technologies vis-à-vis des performances statiques et dynamiques à atteindre. Les modèles développés à partir des lois d’échelles sont étendus et exploités afin de modéliser les pièces élémentaires de l’EMA et de faire ressortir les règles de « bonnes pratiques » en conception préliminaire. On s’intéresse en particulier au dimensionnement des EMAs dans le domaine aéronautique. Dans un premier temps, nous avons donc créé des modèles d’estimation et des métamodèles des pièces de l’EMA. A cet effet, il est décomposé en carter et pièces élémentaires qu’il intègre.Dans un second temps, nous avons établis des règles de bonne conception et des pistes de dimensionnement de l’actionneur asservi en position. Contrairement aux recherches antérieures, qui se centraient sur le dimensionnement en puissance, nous avons pris en compte la synthèse de la commande pour établir ces règles. A partir de modèles de simulations, nous qualifions et quantifions l’influence des défauts (inertie et saturations, élasticité/jeu, frottement) sur les performances limites de l’EMA. En effet, les structures de commande usuelles et le choix des éléments de contrôle-commande sont intimement liés aux performances dynamiques et à ces défauts. Enfin, afin de se doter de moyens d’essais pour identifier finement un modèle de frottement dans des conditions aéronautiques de température, un banc d'essai sur le réducteur Harmonic Drive a été conçu et mis en œuvre. Il permet également d’amorcer la validation des règles de bonne conception / In the continuity of work of research on embedded systems of mechanical transmission, this these has two objectives: to improve estimation models of Electromechanical Actuator (EMA) pieces and to extend the cross-cutting vision of preliminary design to the dynamic aspects. Indeed, in the preliminary design based on models, this research should allow to adapt the choice of architectures and technologies to static and dynamic performance to achieve. The models developed from the scaling laws will be extended and exploited to modelize elementary pieces of the EMA and to highlight rules of "good practices" in preliminary design. We focus in particular on the design of EMA in aeronautic field. In the first time, we developed estimations models and métamodèles of elementary components of EMA which was decomposed in housing and elementary pieces.In a second time, we established rules of good practices for actuator sizing in control position loop. Contrary to older researches, we take into account control synthesis to create these rules. From simulations models, we quantified the influence of technological defects of components (inertia and saturations, elasticity (backlash), friction) on EMA performances. Indeed, the usual command structures and the choice of the elements of control are intimately linked to the dynamic performance and these defects.Finally, to give test way to identify with accuracy a friction model in aeronautical conditions of temperature, a test bench of Harmonic Drive was create, integrated and implemented. It allows booting the validation of rules of good practices in preliminary design.

Pulsão e instinto: um diálogo entre a psicanálise e a biologia do comportamento

According to Sigmund Freud, the concept of drive is the most important one and also the most obscure for the metapsychology. The complications regarding the meaning of this concept begin with translation problems and with divergences among several schools of psychoanalysis, which postulate different comprehensions referring to the word Trieb and Instinkt and referring to the way Freud used them in his texts to talk about the development of the psychic apparatus and its place in the construction of metapsychology. The view on the Instinkt drive being a totally inherited and automatic behavior is a misunderstanding for the own scientists in the area of behavioral biology. Freud uses in his texts the concepts of Trieb and Instinkt in turns and this research tries to elucidate if there was the need of this distinction and, thus, an emphasis is given on the definitions that Freud has postulated about the nature of both, sexual drive and death drive. Besides, the beginning of a dialogue between these Freudian concepts and the sexual drive and the drive of aggressiveness in the sociobiology of Edward O. Wilson and in the behavioral biology of Konrad Lorenz is carried out. / O presente trabalho pretende analisar o conceito de pulsão na psicanálise freudiana, da primeira e da segunda teoria das pulsões, e recorrer à biologia do comportamento para iniciar um debate sobre o conceito de Trieb entre essas duas áreas do conhecimento. Segundo Sigmund Freud o conceito de pulsão é o mais importante e também o mais obscuro para a metapsicologia. As complicações quanto ao significado desse conceito começam por problemas de tradução e por divergências entre várias escolas de psicanálise que postulam compreensões diferentes quanto à palavra Trieb e Instinkt e quanto ao modo como Freud as utilizava em seus textos para referir-se ao desenvolvimento do aparelho psíquico e os seus lugares na construção da metapsicologia. O instinto é um conceito polêmico para os próprios cientistas da área da biologia do comportamento. Freud utiliza alternadamente os conceitos de Trieb ou Instinkt em seus textos e essa pesquisa procura elucidar se haveria a necessidade dessa distinção e, para tanto, é dada ênfase às definições que Freud postulou sobre a natureza da pulsão sexual e da pulsão de morte, como também é realizado o início de um diálogo entre esses conceitos freudianos e o conceito de instinto sexual e instinto de agressão na sociobiologia de Edward O. Switched Capacitive Filtering Scheme for Harmonic Suppression in Variable Speed AC Drives

For low and medium power applications, conventional two-level inverters are widely used in industrial applications including electric vehicle drives, traction drives, distributed generation, power management and grid connected renewable energy systems. To filter out the harmonic currents from the load, passive line filters are used. These filters are designed to pass the fundamental phase current and suppress higher harmonic currents, making the filters bulky. To get a nearly sinusoidal current waveform, these two level inverters are switched at high frequency to shift the harmonic components in the phase current to high frequencies to reduce size and cost of the filter. But higher switching frequencies have some drawbacks like large dV /dt stresses on the motor terminals and switching devices, leading to electro-magnetic interference (EMI) problems and higher switching losses. For full DC bus utilization to enhance the power output from the two level inverter, the inverter has to operate in overmodulation region up to the six-step operation. Considerable fifth and seventh order (6n ± 1, n = odd) harmonics are produced when the inverter operates in overmodulation region. These include some low order harmonics like fifth and seventh, which are currently suppressed by using bulky passive line filters. Different high frequency modulation schemes are uniquely used in overmodulation region to suppress these harmonics. Another well accepted method of harmonic suppression is the selective harmonic elimination (SHE) techniques. SHE introduces notches at specific angles in a fundamental period of the inverter pole voltage to eliminate a particular harmonic component from the pole voltage. But, SHE involves extensive offline computation and requirement for higher memory for implementation of huge lookup tables. dodecagonal voltage space vectors have been reported in literature. Dodecagonal voltage space vector structures inherently eliminate fifth and seventh order (6n ± 1, n = odd) harmonics from the phase voltage. However, these require multiple isolated and unequal DC supplies (like VDC and 0.366VDC ). Generating DC voltage supplies at particular ratio to the main DC supply, requires additional circuitry. This increases the size of the converter and four quadrant back to back operation is not possible for the converter. To overcome the problems mentioned above, a novel switched capacitive filtering technique is proposed in this work for low and medium power drives applications. The filtering is done by an inverter fed by capacitor. A novel method to ensure zero power contribution by an inverter is shown, enabling the inverter to be fed by a capacitor. Thus, the capacitor fed inverter is shown to operate as a switched capacitive filter, which generates harmonic voltages that gets eliminated from the phase voltage of conventional two level inverters. With the proposed switched capacitive filtering technique, the following benefits are achieved. • Fifth and seventh order (6n ± 1, n = odd) harmonics are eliminated from the phase voltage, for the full modulation range of the two level inverters even while operating in overmodulation region and six-step mode. Thus, bulky passive line filters are avoided. • Since, the capacitive filter does not contribute any active power to the load, single DC supply operation is possible. Hence, four quadrant back to back operations is possible with the proposed filtering technique. • Dodecagonal voltage space vector structures are realized using single DC supply for the first time. • Modulation techniques for different power circuit topologies have been proposed which inherently controls the capacitor voltage at specific voltage levels for the full modulation range of the inverter including six-step operation. Hence, no additional pre-charging circuitry is required. • High frequency switching is shifted to the capacitive filter which is at a low voltage compared to the DC supply fed power contributing inverter. Thus, the main inverter need not be switched at high switching frequency for harmonic suppression. This reduces the switching loss as compared to conventional inverters, to achieve harmonic suppression of comparable order. • Reduced voltage stress on the switches of the switched capacitive filter. Hence, low voltage devices can be used to implement the switched capacitive filter, reducing the cost and size drastically as compared to conventional passive line filters. The proposed switched capacitive filtering scheme has been realized for open-end winding induction motor drive and three phase star connected three terminal induction motor drive where conventional two level inverter is used as the power contributing inverter. Additionally, extension of the capacitive filtering scheme to multilevel inverter fed drives is also shown, where the main power contributing inverter is a three level flying capacitor (FC) inverter. The power circuit implementations are briefly described as following. (i) In open-end winding three phase induction motors, the two terminals of each of the three phase windings are accessed. The main DC bus connected two level inverter feeds power from one end of the motor terminals. A capacitor fed two level inverter eliminates the fifth and seventh order harmonics from the other end for the full modulation range including overmodulation and six-step operation of DC bus fed inverter. The voltage space vectors from both the inverters connected at opposite ends of the motor forms dodecagonal voltage space vectors. An uniform pulse width modulation (PWM), for the full modulation range is proposed which switches from the dodecagonal voltage space vectors while inherently maintaining the capacitor voltage at 0.289VDC . (ii) In conventional star connection of three phase induction motors, all three terminals of the three phase windings are shorted from one end, leaving access to just three terminals. Such three terminal induction motor fed to conventional two level inverter is commonly used in many drives applications. Capacitor fed H-bridges are cascaded to such two-level inverters, to eliminate the fifth and seventh order harmonics from the phase voltage for the full modulation range including overmodulation and six-step operation of DC fed inverter. The voltage space vectors from capacitor fed H-bridges get added to the voltage space vectors from the two level inverter to form dodecagonal voltage space vectors. A PWM technique for the full modulation range is proposed to switch from the dodecagonal voltage space vector while inherently maintaining the three H-bridge connected capacitor voltages at 0.1445VDC . (iii) Advantages of dodecagonal space vector switching and multilevel inverters are achieved with a single DC supply. A DC supply fed three level flying capacitor (FC) inverter feeds active power to one end of the induction motor winding terminals and H-bridge connected capacitors eliminate fifth and seventh order harmonics from the other end of the motor winding terminals. The voltage space vectors from the three level FC inverter and the H-bridge inverter forms a three level dodecagonal voltage space vectors with symmetric triangular sectors. A PWM technique is developed to switch the three level dodecagonal space vectors and simultaneously control the H-bridge connected capacitors at 0.1445VDC . The fifth and seventh order harmonics are eliminated for the full modulation range of the three level FC inverter, including the extreme six-step operation. Additionally, the proposed inverter has also been shown to operate for rotor field oriented vector control of the open-end winding induction motor drive. For all the power circuit implementation of the switched capacitive filter, an increase of 7.8% in the linear modulation range (up to 48.8Hz) is achieved, implying better DC bus utilization as compared to conventional inverter topologies switching from hexagonal voltage space vectors. With advantages like fifth and seventh order (6n ± 1, n = odd) harmonic elimination throughout the modulation range, reduced dv/dt stress, lower switching frequency in high voltage devices, single DC supply requirement, dodecagonal voltage space vector switching, PWM technique with inherent capacitor balancing, increased linear modulation range and reduced voltage stress on high frequency switches, the proposed switched capacitive filtering scheme is well suited for low and medium power drives application with requirements for high dynamic performance and precise speed control.
