Yes / This paper presents a planar multi-circular loop antenna with a wide impedance bandwidth for next generation mm-wave systems. The proposed antenna comprises three circular rings with a partial ground plane with a square slot. The resonating structure is designed on a 0.254 mm thin RO5880 substrate with a relative permittivity of 2.3. The single element of the proposed design showed a resonance response from 26.5 to 41 GHz, with a peak gain of 4 dBi and radiation efficiency of 96%. The proposed multicircular ring antenna element is transformed into a four-element array system. The array size is kept at 18.25 × 12.5 × 0.254 mm3 with a peak gain of 11 dBi. The antenna array is fabricated and measured using the in-house facility. The simulated and measured results are well agreed upon and are found to be suitable for mm-wave communication systems.

Caractérisation quantitative de la microstructure de l'acier 16MND5 des cuves de réacteurs nucléaires à eau pressurisée / Quantitative characterization of the microstructure of 16MND5 steel in vessel

Diawara, Bandiougou 12 July 2011 (has links)
Reactor pressure vessel is the second security barrier of the nuclear reactor and it is elaboratedwith a low carbon steel ( C-0.16%). Due to the large size of the ferrule there is temperatureand cooling rate gradient, which lead to microstructure gradient. To develop predictive modelit is necessary to well describe the microstructure which depend to the processing parameters. We focuse our work in investigating the effect of the processing parameters (cooling rate, chemical composition...) on the final microstructure during phase transformation. To get these informations and better describe the microstructure, we have used someexperimental technics like SEM, EBSD, TEM and Optical Microscopy. The steel used is alow carbon steel with a composition of C-0.16%, Mn-1.32%, Ni-0.72%, Mo-0.49%, Si-0.23%, Cr-0.23%, P-0.010%, S-0.004%. The material has been tempered in the range 635°C-660°C after cooling. Three positions have been chosen for examinations, because the coolingrate is not the same between the center and the edge of the material. The results of theobservations made in the different scale, indicate that the microstructure is mainly baniticwith bainitic ferrite and cementite precipitates. Examinations of the precipitates withextractive replicas in TEM reveal that morphology of cementite particles is complex they arecylinder-shaped particles, short bars particles and skeletal particles. OrientationsRelationships (OR) have been determined between ferrite and cementite particles with thinfoils in TEM by using Selected Area Diffraction, in a large number areas the Isaichev andBagaryatskii OR have been observed, a little Pitsch Petch OR have been obtained. The EBSDmap shows that the bainitic ferrite morphologies are both lath like and polygon. Themisorientations inside the laths are very small (0.5° misorientation point to point) andbetween laths we have the range 49-60° misorientation. The profile of misorientationsbetween point to point indicates higher frequency for the range 49-60°. Charpy test have beenperformed to analyze the effect of the microstructure on the fracture energy at lowtemperature. The results show that the fracture energy decreases when the content ofproeutectoid ferrite is high.

Direct Nanoprototyping of Functional Materials via Focused Electron Beam

Riazanova, Anastasia January 2013 (has links)
During recent years the demand for nanoscale materials with tailor-made functional properties as bulk species, is continuously and progressively rising for such fields as e.g. micro- and nano-electronics, plasmonics, spintronics, bio-technology, bio-sensing and life sciences. Preserving and / or improving properties of functional materials with their simultaneous size reduction and high-resolution site-specific positioning is indeed very challenging, for both conductors and insulators. One of the advanced nanoprototyping methods that can be utilized for this purpose is the Electron-Beam-Induced Deposition, or shortly EBID. This process is based on a local decomposition by a focused electron beam of a precursor gas molecules adsorbed on the sample’s surface. The beauty of this method is that it gives a unique possibility of rapid creation of site-specific nanoscale 3D structures of precise shape in a single operation. It’s an additive process that can be easily combined with other patterns. However, besides all the benefits, EBID has some constraints, in particular low purity of the deposited materials, due to the organometallic nature of the used precursors. Chemical composition of EBID patterns is strongly dependent on the chosen gas chemistry, the substrate, many deposition parameters and post-treatment processes applied to the deposited structures. In our research we focused on deposition of Co, Au, SiO2, C, W and Pt, their purification and shape control. And this thesis presents an overview of our accomplishments in this field. Depending on the gas chemistry of interest, three major purification approaches of EBID-grown materials were tested out: - Post-deposition annealing: in air and in the controlled atmosphere, - Deposition onto a preheated substrate, - Deposition in the presence of reactive gases. As a result, a dramatic purity improvement was observed and a significant advancement was achieved in creation of high-purity gold, cobalt and silicon dioxide nanoscale structures. In particular: 1)   For the Me2Au(acac) precursor, we developed a nanofabrication routine combining application of wetting buffer layers, fine tuning of EBID parameters and subsequent post-annealing step, which led to formation of high-purity planar and high aspect ratio periodic Au nanopatterns. We also describe the adopted and gently adjusted wet etching method of undesirable buffer layer removal, required in some cases for the further device application. 2)   For the Co2(CO)8 precursor, in-situ seeded growth in conjunction with EBID at the elevated substrate temperature resulted in a deposition of pure nanocrystalline Co with magnetic and transport properties close to the bulk material. 3)   For the tetraethyl orthosilicate precursor, or shortly TEOS, assisting of the deposition process with the additional oxygen supply led to the EBID of carbon-free amorphous insulating Si-oxide, with the absorption and refraction properties comparable to those for fused silica. Several applications of EBID nanopatterns are also discussed. / <p>QC 20131028</p>

The product analyzed was injectable dipyrone (1g/2 mL) sold in amber colored vials of 1.1 cm outer diameter, and 6 cm in height. Initially, spectroscopic studies were carried out employing a commercial spectrophotometer to assess the best NIR spectrum regions that might be used. The instrument developed used two twin LEDs with NIR radiation emissions rated at 1050 ± 50 nm. Two InGaAs photodiodes (also identical), and a PIC18F455 microcontroller were used as well. The output of the instrument used a PIC microcontroller coupled to a 20x2 liquid crystal display which communicated with a PC by USB 2.0 for communication. The instrument evaluated commercial dipyrone injection samples using absorbance measurements made directly from ampoules of the injectable medicines. The photometer was calibrated with standard solutions of dipyrone, and its performance was evaluated by an analysis of 620 of the commercial dipyrone injection samples, where 320 were expired. The instrument had a high success rate for screening analysis (91%). For quantitative determination of the active dipyrone, a linear response was obtained [R2 = 0.9964, A = 0.0068 + 0.0043 C (% w/v)] in the concentration range of 5 to 60% m/v. We also obtained a low relative error of 0.40%, and good accuracy in the analyses with a relative standard deviation of 2.13%.

Applications of microfluidic chips in optical manipulation & photoporation

Marchington, Robert F. January 2010 (has links)
Integration and miniaturisation in electronics has undoubtedly revolutionised the modern world. In biotechnology, emerging lab-on-a-chip (LOC) methodologies promise all-integrated laboratory processes, to perform complete biochemical or medical synthesis and analysis encapsulated on small microchips. The integration of electrical, optical and physical sensors, and control devices, with fluid handling, is creating a new class of functional chip-based systems. Scaled down onto a chip, reagent and sample consumption is reduced, point-of-care or in-the-field usage is enabled through portability, costs are reduced, automation increases the ease of use, and favourable scaling laws can be exploited, such as improved fluid control. The capacity to manipulate single cells on-chip has applications across the life sciences, in biotechnology, pharmacology, medical diagnostics and drug discovery. This thesis explores multiple applications of optical manipulation within microfluidic chips. Used in combination with microfluidic systems, optics adds powerful functionalities to emerging LOC technologies. These include particle management such as immobilising, sorting, concentrating, and transportation of cell-sized objects, along with sensing, spectroscopic interrogation, and cell treatment. The work in this thesis brings several key applications of optical techniques for manipulating and porating cell-sized microscopic particles to within microfluidic chips. The fields of optical trapping, optical tweezers and optical sorting are reviewed in the context of lab-on-a-chip application, and the physics of the laminar fluid flow exhibited at this size scale is detailed. Microfluidic chip fabrication methods are presented, including a robust method for the introduction of optical fibres for laser beam delivery, which is demonstrated in a dual-beam optical trap chip and in optical chromatography using photonic crystal fibre. The use of a total internal reflection microscope objective lens is utilised in a novel demonstration of propelling particles within fluid flow. The size and refractive index dependency is modelled and experimentally characterised, before presenting continuous passive optical sorting of microparticles based on these intrinsic optical properties, in a microfluidic chip. Finally, a microfluidic system is utilised in the delivery of mammalian cells to a focused femtosecond laser beam for continuous, high throughput photoporation. The optical injection efficiency of inserting a fluorescent dye is determined and the cell viability is evaluated. This could form the basis for ultra-high throughput, efficient transfection of cells, with the advantages of single cell treatment and unrivalled viability using this optical technique.

Studies of particle and atom manipulation using free space light beams and photonic crystal fibres

Gherardi, David Mark January 2009 (has links)
Light can exert optical forces on matter. In the macroscopic world these forces are minuscule, but on the microscopic or atomic scale, these forces are large enough to trap and manipulate particles. They may even be used to cool atoms to a fraction of a degree above absolute zero. This thesis details a number of experiments concerned with the optical manipulation of atoms and micron-size particles using free space light beams and photonic crystal fibres. Two atom guiding experiments are described. In the first experiment, a spatial light modulator is used to generate higher blue-detuned azimuthal Laguerre-Gaussian LG) beams, which are annular beams with a hollow core. These LG beams are then used to guide laser cooled rubidium-85 atoms within the dark core over a distance of 30 mm. The second atom guiding experiment involves attempting to guide laser cooled and thermal rubidium atoms through a hollow-core photonic crystal fibre using red-detuned light. Hollow-core photonic crystal fibres are fibres that are able to guide light with low attenuation within a hollow core. For this experiment a hot wire detection system was designed, along with a number of complex vacuum systems. The first dual-beam fibre trap for micron-size particles constructed using endlessly single-mode photonic crystal fibre (ESM-PCF) is described. The characteristics of dual-beam fibre traps are governed by the fibres used. As ESM-PCF has considerably different properties in comparison to conventional single- or multimode fibres, this dual beam ESM-PCF trap exhibits some novel characteristics. I show that the dual beam ESM-PCF trap can form trapping, repulsive and line potentials; an interference-free ‘white light’ trap; and a dual-wavelength optical conveyor belt.

Fluid dynamic assessments of spiral flow induced by vascular grafts

Kokkalis, Efstratios January 2014 (has links)
Peripheral vascular grafts are used for the treatment of peripheral arterial disease and arteriovenous grafts for vascular access in end stage renal disease. The development of neo-intimal hyperplasia and thrombosis in the distal anastomosis remains the main reason for occlusion in that region. The local haemodynamics produced by a graft in the host vessel is believed to significantly affect endothelial function. Single spiral flow is a normal feature in medium and large sized vessels and it is induced by the anatomical structure and physiological function of the cardiovascular system. Grafts designed to generate a single spiral flow in the distal anastomosis have been introduced in clinical practice and are known as spiral grafts. In this work, spiral peripheral vascular and arteriovenous grafts were compared with conventional grafts using ultrasound and computational methods to identify their haemodynamic differences. Vascular-graft flow phantoms were developed to house the grafts in different surgical configurations. Mimicking components, with appropriate acoustic properties, were chosen to minimise ultrasound beam refraction and distortion. A dual-beam two-dimensional vector Doppler technique was developed to visualise and quantify vortical structures downstream of each graft outflow in the cross-flow direction. Vorticity mapping and measurements of circulation were acquired based on the vector Doppler data. The flow within the vascular-graft models was simulated with computed tomography based image-guided modelling for further understanding of secondary flow motions and comparison with the experimental results. The computational assessments provided a three-dimensional velocity field in the lumen of the models allowing a range of fluid dynamic parameters to be predicted. Single- or double-spiral flow patterns consisting of a dominant and a smaller vortex were detected in the outflow of the spiral grafts. A double- triple- or tetra-spiral flow pattern was found in the outflow of the conventional graft, depending on model configuration and Reynolds number. These multiple-spiral patterns were associated with increased flow stagnation, separation and instability, which are known to be detrimental for endothelial behaviour. Increased in-plane mixing and wall shear stress, which are considered atheroprotective in normal vessels, were found in the outflow of the spiral devices. The results from the experimental approach were in agreement with those from the computational approach. This study applied ultrasound and computational methods to vascular-graft phantoms in order to characterise the flow field induced by spiral and conventional peripheral vascular and arteriovenous grafts. The results suggest that spiral grafts are associated with advanced local haemodynamics that may protect endothelial function and thereby may prevent their outflow anastomosis from neo-intimal hyperplasia and thrombosis. Consequently this work supports the hypothesis that spiral grafts may decrease outflow stenosis and hence improve patency rates in patients.
