Approximately 1100 people commit suicide in Sweden every year. There are many unanswered questions about how suicide can be prevented. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the degree of social integration in a society may explain the differences in suicide rates prevailing between Swedish municipalities. “The theory of egoistic suicide”, by Èmile Durkheim, has been used as a theoretical basis and in the interpretation of the study results. The study is based on data from statistical agencies and self-rated health from the national public health survey. We used correlation analyzes and regression analyzes made in the statistical program SPSS to analyze the data. The results shows that there are a statistical significant relationship between both unemployment and suicide, and low social participation and suicide. Both of these correlations are positive, unemployment has slightly higher importance for the suicide rate than the proportion with low social participation. Our conclusion is that the degree of social integration along with other factors can help explain the differences in suicide rates at the municipal level.

Durkheim's Refutation of Spencerian Methodological Individualism: A Critical Evaluation.Smith, Matthew Bryan 09 May 2009 (has links)
The famed French classical social theorist Emile Durkheim's academic reputation is based largely on his critical rejection of the British utilitarian tradition and specifically the writings of the classical British sociologist Herbert Spencer. In this thesis I critically evaluate Durkheim's critique of Herbert Spencer's methodological individualism. It is found that while select Durkheimian claims merit continued allegiance, his broader critique of Spencer's methodological individualism must be viewed as logically and empirically deficient. In conclusion I examine the implications for Durkheimian sociology and the broader social theoretical enterprise directed at analyzing and conceptualizing the nature of sociality and the social bond.

Variations in homicide: assessing the effects of inward foreign direct investment and international non-governmental organizations on cross-national homicide ratesLevchak, Philip John 01 July 2013 (has links)
Modernization theorists posit that rapid economic development can produce increased rates of homicide (Durkheim 1951 [1897]; 1984 [1902]; 1997 [1893]; Shelley 1981). As nations develop, individuals migrate to regions that have greater opportunities for employment. Here, they may experience conflicting norms, a lack of adequate housing and education, and possible underemployment. While modernization theory has been tested extensively, it has not accounted for the way in which nations currently develop. Many nations are recipients of inward foreign direct investment. This form of investment, by multi-national corporations, has produced economic growth, inequality, and urbanization in many countries (Bengoa and Sanchez-Robles 2003; Blomström et al. 1994; Campos and Kinoshita 2002; Sit and Yang 1997). These correlates, economic growth, inequality, and urbanization, have all been linked to homicide (Cole and Gramajo 2009; Nivette 2011).
In an examination of up to 62 nations, inward foreign direct investment is found to promote urbanization and inequality. In separate analyses, urbanization is found to increase homicide - suggesting that foreign investment produces homicide by increasing urbanization.
Several scholars have suggested that a strong civil society can mitigate societal ills (Currie 1997; Messner and Rosenfeld 1997). Analyses show that a strong civil society, represented by the presence of international-non-governmental organizations, is associated with decreased rates of homicide.
The results suggest that nations should be cautious when receiving foreign investment. City infrastructure should be monitored to keep up with the needs of a rapidly growing population. International organizations that deal with issues of rapid growth, including those that provide access to housing and education and those that work at reducing inequality and poverty, should be sought after.

Suicidality among Turkish Adolescents: Comparing Durkheim's and Tarde's PerspectivesGurbuz, Suheyl 08 1900 (has links)
Suicidality is an important problem among adolescents. This study compares Durkheim's and Tarde's perspectives on suicide. While the Durkheimian perspective alleges that integration, regulation, and anomie play the major role on adolescent suicidality, Tarde's theory considers imitation as the most important factor affecting suicidality. Durkheim suggests that individuals with higher integration and regulation are less likely to commit suicide. Individuals with less integration and regulation, on the other hand, are more likely to experience anomie and higher suicidality. Tarde claims that individuals with suicidal peers are more likely to commit suicide. In particular, the effects of school integration, family integration, peer integration, religious integration, neighborhood integration, family regulation, anomie, and suicide imitation on adolescent suicidality in Turkey are examined using binary logistics regression in the current attempt. The results indicate that school integration, family integration, and religious integration have significant negative effects on adolescents' suicidality whereas suicide imitation has a positive effect. The results of the study are expected to help to prevention programs purposed at reducing suicidality among adolescents.

När arbetslösheten skördar liv : En kvantitativ regressionsanalys bland svenska regioners självmordsstatistik / The fatal risks of unemployment : A quantitative regression analysis among Swedish counties' suicide rateSvensson, Matilda, Svensson, Jonna January 2021 (has links)
The authors of this study is Matilda Svensson and Jonna Svensson, currently studying at Linnaeus University in Växjö. The name of the study is “When unemployment kills”. The aim of this study is to analyze Swedish counties and their suicide rates in relation to unemployment rates, depression and usage of antidepressant medication. The theoretical datum is based in Durkheim's perspective of suicide as a social phenomenon. The study’s thesis is processed into three framing of questions. Is there a correlation between the occurrence of suicide and unemployment on a regional level, is there a correlation between the occurrence of suicide and depression on a regional level, Is there a correlation between the occurrence of suicide and antidepressant medication on a regional level? The data material is of aggregated secondary form, collected from Swedish databases. We did a descriptive overview of all the data, and then performed correlational analyzing and linear regression in SPSS to analyze the data. Our starting point is that there is a correlation between counties suicide rates and unemployment, depression and antidepressant medication. The descriptive overview indicates that there are regional differences between the counties among all the variables. However, the suicide rates are relatively consistent over time. There are also differences between men and women in terms of suicide ideation, depression and antidepressant medication. It’s possible to assume that women tend to be diagnosed with depression to a higher extent than men, and that men tend to commit suicide to a greater extent than women. However, the result does not indicate any significant correlation between the variables, although some counties did indicate that there was a significant correlation among men’s suicide rates and the independent variables. It's not possible to draw any conclusions based on the study's data material, other than the specific counties which did show a significant result.
