Prostá změna v Aristotelově přírodní filosofii / Unqualified Change in Aristotle's Natural Philosophy

We start with the question, whether and in how far the distinction between "unqualified" and "qualified" predication of change (i.e. predication of "coming to be" and of "becoming") provides a sound clue for understanding of reality. Firstly, we focus on methodological assumptions of Aristotle's natural philosophy and science, namely on their relation to everyday language. In the next step we ask, whether and how the general conclusions about the character of any change made in Physics are valid also for any change (i.e. for "qualified" and "unqualified" change) separately. Last two chapters, then, are concerned with some consequences of Aristotle's endeavor to make justice to everyday distinction of "unqualified" and "qualified" changes for his conception of nature, namely with the character of matter and the circularity of change.

O estudo analisa, em primeiro lugar, as circunstâncias históricas e materiais que propiciaram o desenvolvimento da teoria musical grega, chamada harmônica, e a sua relação com a prática musical do período em questão. A primeira teoria analisada está inserida no contexto da escola pitagórica, em que a cosmologia é o referencial de uma visão de mundo que se expande conectando todas as áreas do pensamento, e um dos pontos de origem é a harmônica matemática. São apresentadas a seguir as demonstrações feitas a partir do cálculo das médias proporcionais e sua relação com o princípio da coesão harmônica da oitava. No segundo capítulo são estudadas as teorias acústicas da Antiguidade, que se originaram das razões pitagóricas e se desenvolveram no âmbito das ciências naturais, aprofundando-se com a filosofia aristotélica. No terceiro capítulo, são analisados os principais pontos de confronto promovidos pela corrente aristoxeniana, que se insere no quadro epistemológico aristotélico, e que foram levantados contra os pitagóricos. Nessa nova forma de pensamento, a harmônica é estudada como uma tékne, que tem uma linguagem especializada particular e um objeto específico, o mélos. Ganha importância especial o conceito de aisthésis e, para colocá-lo em prática, a idéia de dynamis torna-se central. Por fim, é apresentada a persistência da concepção pitagórica nos cálculos dos intervalos musicais a partir da divisão do cânone. / This work presents the central ideas related to two main theories about musical sound in greek Antiquity between the end of VI century and the beginning of III B.C. First, the historical and material contexts that lead to the development of greek musical theory, called Harmonics, are investigated, and its relationship with the musical practice of the period. The first theory analyzed comes from the pythagorean school, in which cosmology is the framework of a world view that expands connecting all areas of thought and one of its departure point is mathematical Harmonics. Afterwards, I discuss the demonstrations that are done from the calculations of proportional medias and their relations with the octave harmonic cohesion principle. In the second chapter, its exposed the acoustic theories of Antiquity which originated from the musical ratios and had developed in the branch of natural sciences, deepening by the Aristotelian Philosophy. In the third chapter, I presented the most important issues concerning the differences between the aristoxenian current, which belongs to the aristotelian epistemological framework, against the pythagoreans. In this new way of thought, Harmonics is studied as a tékne that has a particular range of specialized terms and a specific object, the mélos. The concept of aisthésis assumes relevance and to put it into practice, the idea of dynamis becomes central. At last, the persistency of the pythagorean conception it is presented in the calculations of the musical intervals in the division of the canon.

We will start by investigating, in Part I, Plotinus Cataphatic and Apophatic languages (Chapters One and Two, respectively) from the exegesis of Plato s Parmenides, especially its first hypotheses. Departing from Plotinus One we will analyze the enigmatic aspect of mystical language until we understand, with Plotinus, that it is just another manner for seeing that which those who contemplate the highest and whose mystical language alludes to, through grammar resources, such as the adverbs of place and superlatives, embodied through the language of Love, whose breach opens cracks through which we communicate something that is possible by means of images, metaphors and analogies, until we are forced to use the so called negative, apophatic or aphairetic language. Plato s Parmenides, as a turning point, united at a distance - the perspectives of our interlocutors weaving thus, in an invisible woof, the same we supposed existed from the very beginning, but whose name we did not know, but which revealed itself to us in a simple and instantaneous manner, because it was there, present, in each one of them, its own way. In Part II of this work, we will work the language of Transcendence. The very specific way each one of them developed a personal philosophical corpus departing from the hypotheses of Plato s Parmenides reveals that very thing that the dialog intends to arouse: the ascetic course both of the disciple (for Plotinus) and of the pilgrim (for Iamblichus). In its limit, the aporia brings about, in Damascius discourse (Chapter Three), an inversion, by means of which language twist and turns itself until it becomes utterly exausted when, leaving everything that had been aggregated to thought, we find ourselves all alone, faced with our nothingness. With nothing left, before the abyss, in this instant , hurled forward because we still had not found the No-Where , we meet Iamblichus (Chapter Four), which presents us with the chance of returning, no more by means of our own efforts, but, inspired by the Caldaic Oracles, through Teurgy as complement to Philosophy and not in opposition to it, having reached the limit to which the latter had led us, in the dialog with Plato s Parmenides, it promotes a shift in Plato s Parmenidean paradigm, revealing that which it was supposed to give birth to, and which was beforehand veiled, and which is up to the instant to reveal / Esta tese de doutorado busca encontrar o Não-lugar , ponto de partida e de chegada a partir do qual escreveram os filósofos neoplatônicos Plotino, Jâmblico e Damáscio, ao se depararem com a Presença Inefável Daquele que nos atrai com o seu Silêncio e que, ao invés de se calarem, tornam-se loquazes indicadores do que se esconde por trás do que é dito e que linguagem alguma consegue contemplar sem trair a si própria. Começaremos por investigar, na primeira parte deste estudo, a linguagem catafática e apofática de Plotino (1º e 2º Capítulos, respectivamente) a partir da exegese do Parmênides de Platão, especialmente a primeira hipótese. A partir do Um de Plotino vislumbraremos o aspecto enigmático da linguagem mística até entendermos, com Plotino, tratar-se de outra maneira de ver aquela de quem contempla o mais alto e que a linguagem mística alude através de recursos gramaticais, tais como os advérbios de lugar e superlativos, e que se concretizam através da linguagem do Amor, cuja brecha abre fendas por meio das quais nos comunicamos, o que é possível por meio de imagens, metáforas e analogias até sermos forçados a utilizar a linguagem negativa, apofática e afairética. O Parmênides de Platão, como um divisor de águas, aproximou - à distância - as perspectivas de nossos interlocutores tecendo uma trama invisível, a mesma que vislumbrávamos existir desde o início, mas que desconhecíamos o nome, que veio a se revelar a nós de modo simples e instantâneo, porque estava ali presente, em cada um deles, à sua maneira. Na segunda parte deste estudo trabalharemos a linguagem da Transcendência. A maneira muito particular como cada um deles desenvolveu um corpo filosófico próprio, a partir das hipóteses do Parmênides, revela aquilo mesmo que o diálogo pretende suscitar: o percurso ascético tanto do discípulo (para Plotino) quanto do peregrino (para Jâmblico). Em seu limite, a aporia realiza, no discurso de Damáscio (3º capítulo), uma inversão, por meio da qual a linguagem se contorce e inverte até a mais completa exaustão quando, abandonando tudo o que havíamos agregado ao pensar, nos encontramos sós e diante de nosso nada. Sem mais nada, diante do abismo, neste instante , arremeçados adiante porque ainda não havíamos encontrado o Não-lugar encontramos Jâmblico (4º capítulo), que nos brinda com a possibilidade de retorno, não mais através de nossos esforços, mas, inspirado pelos Oráculos Caldáicos, na teurgia como complemento da filosofia e não em oposição à mesma, tendo ido até o extremo em que esta pode nos conduzir, no diálogo com o Parmênides de Platão, promove uma mudança do paradigma parmenideano de Platão, revelando aquilo que lhe coube trazer à luz e que estava antes encoberto, o que só o instante pode revelar

Cooling methods for electrical machines : Simulation based evaluation of cooling fins found on low voltage general purpose machines

The main goal of this thesis project is to identify interesting concepts related to cooling of electrical motors and generators which could be evaluated using suitable computer simulation tools. As the project proceeded it was decided to focus on investigating how the air from a fan flows along the finned frame of a general purpose low voltage electrical machine, how the heat is transferred between the frame and the cooling air and what the temperature distribution looks like. It was also investigated if it is possible to make improvements in the effectiveness of the cooling without adding additional coolers. This investigation focused on varying the fin design and evaluating the resulting temperature distribution. Due to the complex nature of the simulations a segment, and not the full frame, was considered. Simulation model validation was performed through comparing air speed measurements that were performed on two different machines with the corresponding simulated air speed. The validation showed that good agreement between simulated and measured air speeds are obtained. The conclusion from the simulations is that slight modifications to the current fin design could increase the cooling effect of the finned surface. The air velocity measurements also indicate that the cooling of the machines surface could potentially be improved by small changes in the exterior of the frame. / Målet med detta examensarbete var att identifiera intressanta koncept relaterade till kylning av elektriska maskiner och generatorer, som kunde utvärderas med lämplig programvara för datorsimuleringar. Under projektets gång så bestämdes det att fokusera på hur luften från en fläkt flödar längs med en generell lågspänningsmaskin, hur värmen överförs från ramen till den omgivande luften och hur temperaturfördelningen ser ut. Det undersöktes även om det var möjligt att förbättra effektiviteten av kylningen utan att ansluta extra kylanordningar. Undersökningarna fokuserades på olika fendesigner och dess påverkan på värmefördelningen. På grund av simuleringarnas komplexitet så har simuleringarna endast utförts på ett segment istället för hela maskinen. Validering av simuleringarna utfördes genom att jämföra de simulerade lufthastigheterna med verklig lufthastighet som mättes på två maskiner i testmiljö. Valideringen visade att simuleringarna överensstämmer väl med de mätningar som utfördes. Slutsatsen utifrån simuleringarna är att mindre förändringar av fenornas nuvarande design kan förbättra fenornas kylningsförmåga. Mätningarna av lufthastigheten ger även indikationer på att kylningen av maskinens utsida eventuellt kan förbättras genom små förändringar av ramens exteriör.

This essay is an attempt to provide an initial phenomenological reading of Saint Paul's notion of dunamis. Throughout his letters a thematic of dunamis is mentioned over forty times – often in close proximity to other central motifs of the Pauline message and not least to God. Although there has been a resurgence of philosophical interest in reading Paul for the last twenty years, a phenomenological thematic of dunamis hasn't been developed. Giorgio Agamben and Alain Badiou (among others) has both provided an analysis of dunamis: but for both mostly along the key of the messianic and prominently related to the political sphere. Following Martin Heideggers phenomenological reading and re-interpretation of the Aristotelean notion of dunamis in the thematic of a twofold disclosing of being I attempt to show how Paul's dunamis, through a praxis of kenotic self-emptying, manages to transform his weakness into strenght. By providing a space for the Sacred to enter and incarnate – and not least the Other – Paul's oppenes shows an ontological receptivity for change which is at the heart of the Aristotelean metaphysical framework. Thus a first attempt is made.
