En personaltidnings intryck : En fallstudie om hur personalen i Landstinget i Värmland framställs i personaltidningen Intryck / The impression of a staff magazine : A case study of the representation of the staff in county council in Värmland's staff magazine Intryck

Käller, Josefine, Åhs, Malin January 2014 (has links)
This essay investigates the organizational staff magazine of county council in Värmland. The purpose of the essay is to investigate the culture in the organization and how the professional groups, doctors, nurses, assistant nurses, physiotherapist and dietitian, are being represented in the magazine. The essay also investigates if the professional groups find themselves represented in the magazine and if the professional groups understand the intention of the magazine.   Communication, internal communication, organizational theory and organizational culture are the theories of this essay. The model of transmission is one, among other, important tenets in the essay.   To secure the purpose of the essay the investigation was made by using content analysis and a survey. The content analysis gave the answers to three questions asked to the text. The questions were: ”How do the magazine represent the professional groups?”, ”Do the magazine focus on team or individuals?” and ”Do the readers understand the diction in the magazine?”. These three questions were used to answer the major purpose of the essay: ”How the professional groups, doctors, nurses, assistant nurses, physiotherapists and dietitians, are being represented in the magazine”. The survey was dispensed to the professional groups at Centralsjukhuset in Karlstad (the hospital in Karlstad) and to three care centres in Karlstad: Västerstrand care centre, Gripen care centre and Kronoparken care centre. The survey was made to answer two of the major questions of the essay: ”Does the magazine contribute to the organizational culture” and ”The magazine has several purposes – which one is the readers most aware of?”.   The result of the essay shows big differense between how the magazine represents the professional groups. The content analysis shows among other things that the doctors are represented as heroes and the nurses as a lower-ranking professional group. The result of the survey shows that the magazine is helping to build an organizational culture at the county council. ”To give the staff important information about the workplace” was the most frequent answer given to the question about the main purpose of the magazine.

Kvinnor på hemmafronten : En kvalitativ studie om framställning av kvinnorollen under beredskapstiden i tidskriften Husmodern (1939-1945).

Aggarwal, Riya January 2016 (has links)
This essay is about women's role during the second world war, which occurred 1939-1945.Throughout the beginning of the war Sweden was one of the few countries that remainedneutral. Women in Sweden had an important part in the war effort, and a large number ofmarried and unmarried women recruited into different jobs, left by men. Throughout the warwomen were expected to mobilize themselves on the homefront. The purpose of this essay isto understand women's role in a popular swedish women's magazine, Husmodern.Advertisement and other kind of propaganda was provided during the war, one of the reasonwas to target women on the home front. But it was also a way to reach women and placeresponsibilities on them. My aim is to understand how the swedish magazine Husmodernportrayed women's role and responsibilities during the war. The conclusion of my study isthat women had an important role in Sweden, during the war. Women were expected to doeverything but in other terms. Already when the war was coming to an end, women whorecruited into different jobs and the women who worked diligently on the homefront, wereexpected to take the role and responsibilities of a housewife.

The Development of a Critical Standard for the Novel in Fraser's Magazine, 1830-1850

Lively, Cheryl L. 12 1900 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with establishing the nature of the critical standard which Fraser's Magazine, a Victorian journal, used in evaluating the artistic merit of current English novels. Eminent critics such as William Thackeray, Thomas Carlyle, and William Maginn were associated with the magazine during its early years of publication: thus, the early numbers contain some of its most valuable criticism. Because the English novel was in a period of transition in the decade of the 1840's and the years immediately preceding and following it, this study is confined to the twenty-year period from I830 to 1850. Imitative writers of romance and novels of manners were gradually being replaced with novelists concerned with social reform and with the artistic merit of the genre itself. Thackeray's and Maginn's associations with the magazine also occurred during this period, and their literary opinions are an important indication of the magazine's critical development.

A History of DALLAS Magazine and Its Changing Roles in the Dallas Chamber

Mahony, Linda MacDonald 08 1900 (has links)
This study explains the development of DALLAS magazine from its beginnings and changes in sixty-three years in content and format, departments, staff, and editorial policy. The study shows how DALLAS developed, reflecting the history of the City of Dallas' economic and business growth, and the Chamber of Commerce viewpoints since 1922. Concluding, the study reveals that the magazine projected the Dallas Chamber's viewpoints, that the magazine reported only positive images of the City of Dallas and its economy, that the magazine chronicled the changes in journalistic writing and graphic arts technology, that the magazine's audience remained the business leaders of the community, and that staff members progressively became better qualified for their positions.

Establishing a Special Interest City Magazine: D, the Magazine of Dallas

Glaves, Robert F. 12 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was to determine how, and to what degree, a representative contemporary special interest magazine projected editorial, advertising, circulation, and financial obligations prior to publication and during its infancy. In essence, how did a representative nonsubsidized city magazine identify a marketable audience, resolve advertising and circulation policies, and meet financial obligations? Specifically, this study explored--in six chapters--the mechanics of pre- and post-publication planning at D, The Magazine of Dallas, which began publication in October, 1974. This study determined that twelve common denominators are essential, but are not necessarily a guarantee, for the success of a planned or newly introduced nonsubsidized special interest magazine.

An Impossible Alternative: Orientalism and Margaret Bourke-White's "A Moneylender's House" (1947)

Cochran, Sharayah 01 January 2015 (has links)
Between 1946 and 1948, American photographer Margaret Bourke-White traveled to India while on assignments for Life magazine. Since the late 1940s, a photograph from these assignments that depicts three men sitting in an ornately decorated room has appeared in several publications and exhibitions under variations of the title A Moneylender’s House (1947). Though Bourke-White is traditionally categorized as a documentary photojournalist, her photograph exhibits motifs similar to those seen in European Orientalist paintings from the nineteenth century. Considering recent scholarship that has expanded the temporal and geographical parameters of the Orientalist photography genre, this thesis analyzes the “documentary” photograph, A Moneylender’s House, in its varied exhibition and publication contexts to determine whether they present the photographic subjects from a “nonrepressive and nonmanipulative perspective” (one that Edward Said suggests might provide an “alternative” to Orientalism), or reinforce the “Self/Other” binary at the core of Orientalism.

Komparace zábavně poučných týdeníků pro mládež Mladý hlasatel a Vpřed (30.-50.léta 20.století) / Comparison of popular didactic weekly magazine for youth (Mladý hlasatel thirties/forties Vpřed forties/fifties)

Meravá, Tereza January 2011 (has links)
Master's thesis "Comparison of popularly educational weekly youth magazines Mladý Hlasatel and Vpřed in 1930s through 1950s" contrasts two youth titles that were published around the WWII. Both titles, connected not only through the editor and father-like figure Jaroslav Foglar, were immensely popular in their time and constitute the phenomenon of journalism for children of that era. Both magazines were published during uneasy times, firstly during the dawn of the war and during the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia; secondly, after ten years, during the rise of communists' influence and subsequent Communist coup d'état in 1948. This master's thesis follows my bachelor thesis "Mladý Hlasatel and it's authors" describing history, authors and specifics of this magazine. Master's thesis adds comparably detailed information about the magazine Vpřed, but its main objective is to compare the titles published in "free" era before the WWII and after it, and the ones that were published during the limited freedom of the press during the war and after the year 1948. This work seeks not only to compare the content, authors and information in both magazines, but also to comprehend the contemporary context of that era, observe the impact of ideological and political influences, as well as describe different...

Komparativní obsahová analýza vybraných vydání gay magazínů LUI a Attitude / Comparative analysis of chosen issues of gay magazines Lui and Attitude

Snížek, Michal January 2014 (has links)
There are many works focusing on stereotypes usually connected with minorities including gays in news and media in general. However, there is no study that would describe the common features of gay media products, especially characteristics of gay magazines. This work analyzes in both qualitative and quantitative way two life style magazines targeted at homosexuals - Czech LUI and British Attitude. First, on their bases the advertisements included are described - of gay and non-gay brands. Further the topics and themes used are pointed out - those that appear at the pages the most often, then the other ones that you can find rather rarely. A query among gay people is added as it proposes another point of view for the result of the analyses. This work also answers to the questing how sexual signs and connections are used in gay magazines and what is the amount of articles that have any sexual signs. The results of this study can be used for further gender media works or as the purpose or building a new Czech gay magazine.

Blogeři v roli profesionálních novinářů / Bloggers as professional journalists

Váňová, Veronika January 2014 (has links)
The thesis focuses on the status of the blogosphere in traditional journalism. It defines blogs, describes their history, typology and audience, which has changed from passive recipients of media content to its active creators. The thesis depicts convergence as a process in which amateur journalists affect the institution of traditional journalism by publishing online. This gave rise to a new phenomenon, called participative journalism, which is a potential source of discrepancy between traditional and new media. The thesis voices mutual criticism and arguments from both professional journalists and bloggers. This need not prevail if these two media systems learn to live in symbiosis. The thesis further mentions the legal protection of bloggers in the Czech Republic and the democratizing potential of the blogosphere. The conducted qualitative research is based on twelve structured in-depth respondent interviews (both bloggers and editors) and focuses on the cooperation between lifestyle magazines (and newspapers) and bloggers. It examines motivations to take up the cooperation, its progress and its advantages and disadvantages. The research demonstrates that a symbiotic relationship is possible. It also discusses some notions introduced in the theoretical part of the thesis.
