Offenders' perceptions of correctional education programmes in the correctional facilities of Tshwane

Johnson, Lineo Rose January 2015 (has links)
People-against-the-law is a societal phenomenon that will never disappear, even in societies where law and order are effectively enforced and practised. Political, economic and social conditions contribute to reasons why some people end up in correctional facilities. This study investigated the perceptions of offenders enrolled in education and training programmes offered by three correctional centres in Pretoria. The study adopted a pragmatic qualitative methodology in which the perceptions of the offenders in the educational programmes, and officials were investigated on whether the programmes addressed their personal development and that of their communities. Interviews and observations were used to collect data during tuition activities. Sixty-five (65) males, females, youth offenders, ex-convicts and officials from Correctional Services and non-governmental organisations participated in the study. Bronfenbrenner’s systems and Knowles’ andragogy were used as the theoretical base to understand the dynamics of adult learning in challenging prison environments. The study concluded that educational programmes offered by the Department of Correctional Services must be needs-based and align to employment opportunities, self-esteem and proper rehabilitation of individual offenders. Adult education programmes grounded on andragogic principles and practices should be revisited in correctional centres’ contexts. Thus educational programmes within Correctional Services should not only be mandatory, but teaching and learning activities should be conducted by qualified adult educators, and address the social needs of the adult offenders. / Educational Foundations / D. Motiveringar av växtval i Stockholms stads parker / Motivations of plant selections in parks of Stockholm Municipality

Nordström, Alfred, Claésson, Anton January 2020 (has links)
In our strive to reach a sustainable development in the world, and to achieve the sustainable development goals, the work in our cities plays a big role. A big part of this work is grounded in the green spaces of the cities and how these are supposed to be preserved and expanded, in order to increase the offers of ecosystem services in the cities. These green spaces are largely made out of parks. To preserve and comprehend the attributes of the parks it is crucial to know which plants are planted where. Thus aims this work to understand the motives behind the choice of plants in the parks. To be able to answer this, three parks in the city of Stockholm has been closely viewed upon. The selected parks are as follows; Norr mälarstrands parkstråk, Rinkeby norra stadspark and parkleken Vårgården. These parks are spread, from north to south in Stockholm and therefore they are assumed to give a representative image of the different conditions in the city. Besides the motives behind the choices of plants, it has also been studied what responsibility the municipality of Stockholm has and what role the governing documents have when it comes to the choices of plants. These documents has thereby been reviewed and supplemented with three interviews with persons in different positions in the municipality in order to grasp a larger understanding of their work. The most important conclusion that could be drawn from this study is that it is mostly the local conditions and problems, such as insecurity, that determines the choices of plants in the park. These conditions differ within the municipality which explains why there often are different themes and priorities being made in different parks. Sustainable development can, however, be seen as a common aspect, even if it in some parks are prioritised to work for a social sustainability and in some parks for environmental sustainability, or both at the same time. Another conclusion is that the choices of plants is not determined by the budget at hand, to any large extent. It is rather the individual landscape architect that determines which plants are being planted.

The assessment of creativity

Botha, Vanessa Ann 11 1900 (has links)
Prominent definitions and theories of 'Creativity' provide core data for themes that frame the Creative Process Assessment Matrix (CPAM). Its framework is based on Wallas' stages of the creative process and the P theory (Person, thinking Process, Press/Persuasion and Product). The CPAM's structure and content was derived from current, reliable and valid research. Issues relating to assessment procedures, as well as psychological factors (blockers and stimulators) gave rise to the Creative Assessment Test Questionnaire (CATQ#4), containing questions that document creative assessment prerequisites. Recognized creativity tests (Word-Association, Instances and TCT-DP) were evaluated to determine whether they successfully address and test for relevant creative process criteria. Results indicated that all three tests only addressed a minority of CPAM's 60-point criteria. CPAM offers understanding of the environmental impact and influence on creativity, and renders it measurable. Finally, the CPAM measures the setting, sensory stimulation and what postulates the initial spark of creativity. / Psychology of Education / M. Ed. (Psychology of Education)

Design Guidelines for a Mobile-Enabled Language Learning System Supporting the Development of ESP Listening Skills

Palalas, Agnieszka 08 May 2012 (has links)
This dissertation presents, describes and discusses an interdisciplinary study which investigated the design and development of a language learning instructional solution to address the problem of inadequate aural skills acquisition for college ESP (English for Special Purposes) students. Specifically, it focused on the use of mobile technology to expand learning beyond the classroom. The eighteen-month process of data collection and analysis resulted in a conceptual model and design principles for a Mobile-Enabled Language Learning (MELL) solution. Mobile-Enabled Language Learning Eco-System was thus designed, developed and trialled in the real-life learning context. Through the iterative process of the design, development and evaluation of the MELL system and its components, design principles were also generated. These design recommendations were refined and reformulated in a cyclical fashion with the help of more than 100 students and ten experts. The resulting MELLES design framework encompasses guidelines addressing the essential characteristics of the desired MELL intervention as well as procedures recommended to operationalize those features. The study also resulted in a better understanding of the broader context of ESP learning using mobile devices and the role of elements of environment, ultimately contributing to real-life praxis of the Ecological Constructivist framework and the complementary approach of Design-Based Research (DBR) methodology. / 2012-06
