Pass The Flow: The Subcultural Practice of Liquid DanceHeller, David Francis January 2018 (has links)
This dissertation explores how the subcultural practice of liquid dance emerged from US rave culture and continues to sustain itself and evolve in today’s era of social media and EDM festival culture. I draw upon the concept of flow as a lens to trace the historical, aesthetic, digital, social and subcultural trajectory of liquid dance. I analyze how this subculture continues to evolve through individual practice, as well as how dance is shared through online and live dance exchange. My dissertation consists of seven chapters that provide both academic and practitioner perspectives of liquid dance. My research methods combine a multidisciplinary approach to implementing semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and digital archival research. My fieldwork consists of interviewing fourteen liquid practitioners, as well as conducting ethnographic research at an EDM festival where liquid dancers annually attend and participate. The purpose of this project is twofold. One, to contribute new knowledge to the field of dance studies on the specific dance genre of liquid, which up until now has not been documented in this field. Two, to provide a space for practitioners to openly share their perspectives in a collaborative effort to produce new knowledge. From the beginning, it has been my intention to produce a dissertation that provides the foundation for a continuing series of academic discussions from which to draw upon for further, future research and critical engagement with liquid dance. This document may also be used as a template for scholars across disciplines to deploy as a lens to analyze and critique other subcultural dance practices within the continuum of rave, club and dance music festivals. / Dance

Experiments on the 852 nm D2 Line of 133Cs with a Diode Laser System and their use in Measurement of the Permanent Electric Dipole Moment of the ElectronRavi, Harish January 2016 (has links) (PDF)
We give a brief introduction to atomic physics and the motivation behind our experiments in the first chapter. The electron’s electric dipole moment is an interesting quantity which is yet to be measured. In the 3rd Chapter, we use the technique of chopped non-linear magneto-optic rotation (NMOR) in a room temperature Cs vapor cell to measure the permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) in the atom. The cell has paraffin coating on the walls to increase the relaxation time. The signature of the EDM is a shift in the Larmor precession frequency correlated with the application of an E field. We analyze errors in the technique, and show that the main source of systematic error is the appearance of a longitudinal magnetic field when an electric field is applied. This error can be eliminated by doing measurements on the two ground hyperfine levels. Using an E field of 2.6 kV/cm, we place an upper limit on the electron EDM of 2.9 × 10−22 e-cm with 95% confidence. This limit can be increased by 7 orders-of-magnitude—and brought below the current best experimental value. We give future directions for how this may be achieved. In chapter 4, we examine the Hanle effect for linear and circularly polarized light for different ground states and we find opposite behavior in the transmission signal. In one case, it shifts from enhanced transmission to enhanced absorption and vice-versa in the other case. In Chapter 5, we study the transmission spectrum at different temperatures and device a way to find the number density. We then verify the Clausius-Clapeyron equation and also find the latent heat of vaporization of Cs. Finally, we wrap up with conclusions and future directions.

Previous issue date: 2010-03-18 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This study aimed to evaluate the batteries motor EDM, TGMD-2 and MABC-2 in terms of: validation, reliability testing by internal consistency and inter-relationship and aimed to evaluate the motor skills of children aged 9 and 10 years old. Qualityquantitative research consisted of field, although not representative probability, descriptive correlational design with between and intraparticipantes as the established objectives. We evaluated 172 children, including 67 boys and 105 girls enrolled. Collections totaled 516, since each child was assessed by three batteries motor. In the analysis of construct items engines, it was observed that the batteries motor skills were grouped separately to the grouping suggested by the authors. Comparing the possible items of batteries, it was noticed that the MABC-2 has a greater affinity between the other batteries motor. The batteries motor MABC-2 and EDM, EDM and TGMD-2 showed positive and batteries TGMD and MABC-2-2 were negatively correlated, although all correlations are weak. In terms of reliability, TGMD-2 showed high internal consistency of the item "control objects" (α =. 717) and the instrument as a whole (α =. 723), indicating its reliability. In the analysis of motor skill development through the application of traction batteries, it was found that, according to EDM, in general, participants showed a deficit in general motor development, with respect to chronological age, with motor age of 109 months or approximately 9 years and getting better performance in the temporal organization and weaker performance in spatial organization, possibly due to difficulty with the notion of right to left. Boys had higher performance than the girls in all motor skills, body scheme except / speed. According to the MABC-2, participants rated themselves on the track "borderline" of motor development, with better scores in balance and weak scores on manual dexterity. Finally, according to the classification of TGMD-2, the children obtained average result in locomotion skills and below average skills in tracking objects. Regarding gender differences, boys, in general, performed better than girls in three batteries motor. As baterias motoras MABC-2 e EDM, EDM e TGMD-2 apresentaram correlação positiva e as baterias MABC-2 e TGMD-2 apresentaram correlação negativa, embora todas as correlações obtidas sejam fracas.

The purpose of this ethnographic study is to describe and understand what participation in Hardstyle parties in Sweden means and what importance the participation has for those who participate. The central issue of the study is based on the importance of participants attributing their participation in the Hardstyle party/culture. The result also deals with a stigma perspective that outsiders have about the partaking in the party culture, where participation is deteriorated and identified in different ways. Participation in the Hardstyle culture has some kind of life-changing influenza, where community and solidarity grew strong from the group's diversity. The hardstyle participation is analyzed from an emotional sociological perspective where concepts such as interaction rituals, emotional energy, gemeinschaft, gesellschaft and culture are key inspirators.

Determination of Wall Thickness and Height when Cutting Various Materials with Wire Electric Discharge Machining ProcessesKim, Sangseop 18 March 2005 (has links)
This thesis looks at the capabilities of cutting thin webs on Wire EDM machines that are difficult or impossible to machine using conventional methods. Covered is an investigation of how different material and web thickness affect the capability of machining thin-walled parts.
Five different metals are used for the test; Aluminum 6061 T6, Yellow Brass SS360, 420 Stainless Steel, D2 unheat-treated tool steel 25-30 RC, and D2 heat-treated tool steel 60-65 RC. The small parts were cut to a 6mm (0.2362 inch) height with six different wall thicknesses: 0.30mm (0.0118 inch), 0.25mm (0.0098 inch), 0.20mm (0.0078 inch), 0.15mm (0.0059 inch), 0.10mm (0.0039 inch), and 0.05mm (0.0020 inch). A Sodick AQ325L Wire EDM machine was utilized for testing.
The methods employed during the study include the following:
• Machine settings and offsets were limited to the default setting selected from the Sodick AQ325L database.
• Two different pre-test cuts were taken on the material to check for web bending during the cutting process.
• Hardness was tested for comparison of the web heights.
This thesis shows that bending increased as webs became thinner and that bending occurred toward the wire as the second side of the web was cut. Bending does affect the height of the web. Physical properties of materials also impacted the height of the web with the hardest material staying intact during the cutting process. This study shows that two factors, physical properties of materials and web thickness, significantly affect cutting results for thin web parts.

The Synthesizer: Modernist and Technological Transformations in Film Sound and Contemporary MusicGreen, Dusin J 01 January 2013 (has links)
The invention of the synthesizer meant the possibility of achieving virtually any sound in one mechanism, a superbly convenient device for musical creativity. Perhaps the perfect space for this approval of sound creativity was in the modern electronic film score. The synthesizer also flourished in popular music immediately following its emergence, but a common form began to solidify itself among synthesizer music. Shortly after, improvements in electronic instrument technology led to the democratization of electronic music and equipment, ultimately leading to electronic music as the new mainstream.
