Towards an effective and empathetic student support system in an open and distance education and e-learning environment : a case study from a developing country contextModise, Mpho-Entle Puleng 02 1900 (has links)
Faced with the influx of emerging technologies, educators must continuously equip themselves with the necessary skills to effectively impact on today’s learners. Central to successful curriculum reform and student retention is the realisation that educators need to engage in continuous professional development, to meet the learners’ needs. The purpose of this research study is to explore and study how educators’ skills, knowledge and experience in e-learning can contribute to the successful achievement of the institution’s and students’ educational goals and to the design of a quality support system in an ODeL environment in a developing country.
A mixed-method research approach was adopted. The target population was the University of South Africa (Unisa) academic staff members who enrolled for an elearning programme with the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) between the year 2012 and 2014. Convenience non-probability sampling was used and a total of 60 candidates were invited to participate in the study.
Most of the participants pointed to the empathetic support they received from the relevant UMUC staff and also indicated that they are now ready to create an empathetic learning environment for their own students at Unisa. It is the premise of this paper that academics cannot impart and/or transfer what they do not have or know to learners and it gives recommendations on striving towards an effective empathetic students support in distance education and e-learning continuous professional development to effectively impact on today’s learners. The importance of pace, assignment due dates, use of rubrics, turnaround time for feedback, built-in support, and appropriate assessment strategies are also key findings in the report. / Educational Studies / M. Learner support in the provision of distance teaching programmes for under qualified teachersSegoe, Bobo Aaron 09 1900 (has links)
Presently all over the world, there is a great concern among teachers, parents, organisations, community leaders and higher education lecturers about the problems that beset teaching and learning particularly in the teaching programmes, for example, for under-qualified teachers studying at a distance. Most distance education (DE) programmes are concerned with education of adults and it seems fairly obvious that the research plans should be informed by the theories and research about learning in higher education institutions. In terms of teacher education, such studies could, inter alia, focus on teacher development, curriculum planning, learner support programmes, communication and evaluation of DE. DE itself refers to a field of education that focuses on teaching methods and technology with the aim of delivering teaching, often on an individual basis, to learners who are not physically present in a traditional educational setting such as a classroom. Distance learning is becoming an increasingly popular way of studying, and most universities now provide courses using this mode of teaching and learning. Today’s learners, though, are demanding high quality, consumer-focused and flexible courses and learning resources, and active learner support. This means that providers of DE need to reconsider key issues about learner support systems, to ensure that this is delivered appropriately and effectively. This study focuses on learner support in DE education for under-qualified teachers. The concept, learner support, can be traced far back to Vygotsky’s concept of the zone of proximal development, which refers to a learners’ optimal developmental potential if assistance that is timely and appropriate is provided by another person (Vygotsky, 1978). The appeal of the concept of the zone of proximal development lies in the fact that it directs attention to the need for maximum support in the learning process, and does so in a way that emphasises that good teaching is necessarily responsive to the state of understanding achieved by particular learners.
Learner support systems may include the resources that the learner can access in order to engage in the learning process, for example, libraries or the resources that relate to the mediation of the communication process such as the media or technology. This study acknowledges that there are different kinds of learner support structures, but argues that there are critical or main components of support services which are registration support, learner support services, contact sessions, technological support and feedback strategies. Therefore, this study focuses on the role played by these five learner support structures as used in the programmes of DE under-qualified teachers at The University of South Africa (UNISA). Supported by empirical data, this study seeks to argue that instructional designers and tutors in the programmes of under-qualified teachers studying through DE need to ensure quality learning support as learning environments are increasingly designed according to the principles of resource-based and independent learning. In a sustainable learning environment, support must be designed according to principles that ensure that learners progress from teacher-directed activity to self-regulated activity. The challenge to deliver a high-quality learner support system, and for tutors and administrators to assume a central educational role in developing effective distance learning environments, the need for teaching and research is increasingly emphasised in research literature. Finally, it is hoped that this piece of work will help to promote more discussion and debate about the use of learner support programmes in DE institutions in particular, and in teaching and learning in general. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / D. Proposed theories of education for effective teaching and learning when using Web2.0 technology in distance educationDimmick-Touw, Michelle 12 1900 (has links)
The research in this dissertation of limited scope aimed to identify theories of education for effective teaching and learning when using Web2.0 technology in distance education. The rationale for such a study is based on the premise that, globally, the dawn of the Fourth Industrial Revolution is bringing about a rapid technological growth and innovative information communication technology (ICT) tools which are utilised in distance education. The increase in connections across the globe has also seen an increase in online learning as the barriers of time and space have been bridged. These advances in technology have a direct impact on the education system which needs to experience a similar exponential development in the guiding theories for universities offering distance learning using Web2.0 technology. Qualitative research methods were used to conduct an integrative literature review of the most utilised pedagogical theories over time. The pedagogical principles were applied to the requirements for effective online teaching and learning to develop a guideline to determine which pedagogical principles and combinations are therefore applicable to 21st century distance education. The finding is that no one pedagogical theory researched in this study can be isolated to be applied to online learning, but rather that a combination – in varying degrees – will support an effective online teaching and learning environment. A document analysis was conducted to understand the current guidelines provided for e-learning in selected South African universities. This analysis indicated that there is much room for development to separate the traditional classroom policies from the online learning policies at higher education institutions. Summaries of applications and tools for effective online learning were presented, along with recommendations for developments within the field and for further research. / Kolu phando lungenamhlaba ubanzi kakhulu kujoliswe ekufumaniseni iingcingane zemfundo zokufundisa nokufunda kwabo bafunda bekude besetyenzisa isixhobo sobuchwepheshe beintanethi esibizwa ngokuba yiWeb2.0. Digital literacy : an investigation into perceived competencies of open distance learning students in the Eastern Cape Province in South AfricaDaya, Raseela 01 1900 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate and describe the perceived digital literacy competencies of Unisa Open Distance Learning students in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The association between the socio-demographic variables of the students and their perceived digital literacy competencies was statistically tested. The study examined whether there is a statistically significant relationship between the independent variables: attitudes towards digital technology for academic purposes, usage of the Learner Management System and attendance at regional digital literacy workshops, and the dependent variable, perceived digital literacy competencies. A quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional survey design was adopted using a census sampling method.
The study concluded that the majority of students have high self-perceived digital literacy competencies. Statistically significant positive relationships were found between attitude towards digital technology for educational purposes, usage of the Learner Management System and attendance at regional digital literacy workshops and perceived digital literacy competencies. / Educational Management and Leadership / M. Developing critical thinking in auditing students through technology-based educational interventions : a conceptual frameworkTerblanche, Ester Aletta Jacomina 04 November 2019 (has links)
Although the development of critical thinking in students is not an easy task, it is becoming
increasingly more vital. Students need to be able to think critically to thrive in the 21st
century workplace. The auditor of the future must adapt to a fast-changing, technologydriven
world where critical thinking capabilities provide the ability to solve unstructured
problems, analyse and interpret information, make informed decisions and interrogate
information.
With claims that the auditing profession is not delivering entry-level chartered accountants
with the necessary skills and competencies to truly add value to auditing clients, the onus
is on educators to develop critical thinking in their students. As critical thinking is a
complex concept with multiple dimensions, imparting this skill to students is an intricate
process. Technology-based educational interventions which include simulations, virtual
reality and games can provide effective platforms for developing critical thinking.
However, educators are often hesitant to use these technologies and uncertain how to
instill critical thinking in students.
It is therefore clear that educators need guidance and require a robust, holistic framework
for critical thinking development through technology-based educational interventions. The
primary objective of this study was to propose such a conceptual framework that would
provide guidance to educators in addressing the growing need for auditors with welldeveloped
critical thinking capabilities. To arrive at this conceptual framework, more
insights into the conceptualisation and development of critical thinking were required.
These insights set the foundation for a preliminary, literature-based, conceptual
framework. To validate the concepts and relationships proposed in this preliminary
framework and to provide insights into additional concepts and relationships, the
perspectives of three groups of participants were obtained using an Interactive Qualitative
Analysis (IQA) design. Concepts in the final conceptual framework included studentrelated
factors, educator-related factors, design and development considerations,
technology-based enabling tools, collaboration among stakeholders and disciplines, the
learning process, ethics, globalisation, auditing content, critical thinking and other learning
outcomes associated with critical thinking, constructivism and characteristics of critical thinking instruction. The end product is a novel, integrated and robust conceptual
framework aimed at the development of critical thinking in auditing students through
technology-based educational interventions. This framework provides a structure to the
complex nature of critical thinking development. The acquisition of critical thinking
capabilities is, however, not a once-off, linear event. The framework and its individual
concepts and relationships should thus be seen as part of a continuous process of critical
thinking growth. / Hoe moeilik dit ook al mag wees om studente te leer om krities te dink, dit word

The impact of disrupted family life and school climate on the self-concept of the adolescentGasa, Velisiwe Goldencia 06 1900 (has links)
This study was undertaken to determine whether a disrupted family life and school climate has an impact on the self-concept of the adolescent. This problem was tackled and investigated from different angles : factors
within the home, factors outside the home, intrapsychic factors, interpersonal factors and school factors. An analysis of the above factors and their impact on the self-concept of the adolescent was done by means of measuring instruments in the form of a questionnaire. The results of the empirical research indicated that the more positive the family and school climate, the more positive the academic, social and emotional self-concept of the adolescent. The educational implications of the findings of the literature and the empirical study are discussed to assist teachers and parents to identify and eliminate factors that cause adolescents from disrupted families to underachieve and have negative self-concepts. / M.Ed. Online learning through the use of information and communication technology (ICT) features in institutions of higher education globally. If integrated successfully online learning holds many benefits. Research however has highlighted that the focus of online learning is often on the technology, while pedagogical considerations are neglected. As such online learning has not yielded significant changes from a pedagogical perspective. The impetus of this study was driven by the need to find approaches of integrating pedagogically sound online learning in distance education (DE). The study employed a case study research design, and was qualitative in nature. Questionnaires, interviews and documents informed the case study. The findings of the study reveal that online learning should be purposefully planned. In light of the findings, the study presents a framework for the integration of online learning in DE. The framework is built on the concept of awareness and argues that online learning should depart from three types of awareness, i.e. lecturer, student and institutional. The framework is entrenched in theory from both DE and online learning and offers direction for stakeholders at various levels of DE higher education institutions in terms of integrating online learning. / Boithuti ka inthanete ka tšhomišo ya theknolotši ya tshedimošo le kgokagano (ICT) bo hlaga ka go dihlongwa tša thuto ya godingwana lefaseng ka bophara.
M.Ed.
